Another electric vehicle maker appears to be on the brink of collapse, the latest in a growing trend of EV startups failing to break through in a crowded marketplace. This time it's Bollinger Motors, a commercial EV company founded nearly 10 years ago. According to The Detroit News, the company, which was acquired by Mullen Automotive in 2022, has been struggling to pay employees, contribute to 401(k) accounts and cover debts. Those debts include a $10 million loan from founder Robert Bollinger, who earlier this year filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming it was broke and that production had stopped.

Torkil Stavdal (b. 1974) is a Norwegian photographer and curator currently residing in New York. At the age of 12, Torkil's grandmother gifted him a Kodak Instamatic 126, and he has not stopped taking photos since. In the mid-90's, after studying photography more formally in Copenhagen, he continued his education by assisting iconic photographers such as Knut Bry, Johan Wildhagen and Massimo Leardini, amongst others. Originally based out of Oslo, Norway, he started his studio "Konfekt" in the early 2000s with Lars Pettersen, Catarina Caprino and Tove Sivertsen. In 2009, Torkil moved to NYC and worked with a number of editorial and commercial clients, including: the New York Times, Elle, Dwell, Apple, VW, Bollinger Motors and Pollack Associates. In 2011, he added motion to his repertoire, and has since worked on shows and movies with Netflix, Lionsgate, BBC, the History Channel and several others. Torkil appreciates the unspoken in a photograph; that there is a story that the spectator gets to finish. In this episode, Torkil and I chat about nature taking back human occupied spaces, the functionality and use of objects (or lack thereof), the photo as a conversation starter, finding your play space, and keeping his art practice going. As we do periodically throughout the year, on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast co-host Bruce Aldrich and I get caught up on the automotive industry news. There's always a lot happening, and our topics cover a wide range. First, car names can mean a lot toward the success or failure of an automobile. We found a recent list on a prominent auto site that lists the top-25 worst car names in history. The list comes to mind with the not-too-long-ago naming of the pending new Ferrari sport utility vehicle. It will be called the Purosangue. The concept cars at 2021 LA Auto Show included the Mullen Five. The EV sedan hasn't been made. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2021. Ferrari, of course, has long been associated with horses and its "Prancing Pony" logo. The new Ferrari is named after the word for an Italian thoroughbred. It's pronounced PURO-o-SAN-gue, and it's a hideous name. The list of the 25 oddball names of cars is a fun read, so have a listen. Also on this episode this I will be attending the LA Auto Show this week (Nov, 16-18) while Bruce produces my daily podcast interviews from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Electric vehicles will again be emphasized this year, and VinFast, the Vietnamese manufacturer, will be again be part of that portion of the show. VinFast will be the first Vietnamese car available in the United States with the pending debut in 2023. Speaking of debuts, as always the LA Auto Show will have its share of global and North American debuts. Manufacturer ambassadors are always par of the LA Auto Show. Image © James Raia/2014. The 115th The LA Auto Show will be held Nov. 18-26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Charge Cars, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, ElectraMeccanica, Fiat, Genesis, GMC, Hummer, Hyundai, INDI EV, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Porsche, Subaru, Supernal (Advanced Air Mobility), Volkswagen, Volvo and the abovementioned VinFast will have all exhibitions. But arguably the best bets, the most consistent, the cars for the every person, are presented every year. New models from the top-10 best-selling vehicles from 2021 will all be presented. Ford continued its dominance with the F-Series pickups accounting for 726,004 sales. The Ram pickup (569,388), Chevrolet Silverado (519,774), Toyota RAV-4 (407,739), Honda CR-V (361,271), Toyota Camry (313,795), Nissan Rogue (285,602), Jeep Cherokee (264,444), Toyota Highlander (264,128) and Honda Civic (263,787) completed the top-10. Despite the continuing chip shortage and Covid-19 ramifications, only the Chevrolet Silverado (down 13 percent), Ford F-Series pickup trucks (8 percent) and Toyota RAV4 (5 percent) had lower sales tallies in 2021 than in 2020. Bollinger Motors exhibited its concept vehicles for the past several years at the LA Auto Show. They've never been manufactured. Image © James Raia/2019. Manufacturers aren't required to detail what vehicles will be shown at the LA Auto Show. Some new offerings have been announced, others will be unveiled as late as the week of the show. Honda recently announced the public availability of the 315-horsepower 2023 Civic Type R. It's the most powerful production vehicle the manufacturer has ever sold, and its will have a starting MSRP of $42,895. Toyota has eliminated V6 Highlander, replacing for 2-23 with a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder. The new model will also feature new multimedia dashboard-area screens and new exterior paint choice, Cypress Green. The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. (Nasdaq: EVGO) family since mid-2021, today announced that its platform has reached over two million registered users globally. - comes on the heels of the platform surpassing over one million new app downloads over the course of 2021, - In 2021, PlugShare drivers provided over 1.3 million ratings of their charging experiences. This time, the BMW i Ventures investment arm focused on the charging infrastructure, an area that was criticized by the BMW Group CEO, Oliver Zipse not long ago. The company invested in HeyCharge, a German start-up that aims to open access to private charging locations for its users. - Usually, in order to start using an EV charger, you'll need an app or an RFID card, as well as an internet connection. However, most subterranean garages lack an internet access point or the ability to install such devices at this time. - HeyCharge's patent-pending technology, removes the requirement for an on-site internet connection by allowing the app and chargers to interact directly over bluetooth with the HeyCharge App or SDK. This increases system availability while reducing delay between the phone and the charger. Total costs in buildings can be lowered by up to 80% when combined with HeyCharge's simple and effective hardware component, Access Point. The collaboration will enable more emission-free transportation and support EV adoption as EV charging infrastructure is enhanced within some of America's most popular national parks. - Under the collaboration between Rivian and Adopt a Charger, Rivian will pay for the equipment and fund 10 years of operation and maintenance by the two organizations. Adopt a Charger, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, has installed over 400 chargers in 10 states, including in 26 California state parks and at major cultural institutions such as the Getty Center. It's the day before the showroom floors open for the global and North American debuts of several dozen vehicle debuts. But there's still plenty to see and discuss. Bollinger Motors is exhibiting the pre-production models of its utilitarian, electric pickups at the LA Auto Show. Image © Bruce Alrdrich/2019 Co-hosts James Raia and Bruce Aldrich conduct interviews with Daniel Sandberg, President and CEO at Brembo North America, Inc., and Robert Bollinger, CEO of Bollinger Motors. The two executives couldn't be further apart in their respective areas of expertise in the automotive landscape. Sandberg oversees the industry's most well-known innovator of premium disc brake technology. Brembo is showcasing its braking systems at the LA Auto Show. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2019. In addition to its long history in the racing industry, Brembo is the forefront in the design, development and production of braking systems and components for passenger cars, motorbikes, industrial vehicles and machinery. Sandberg discusses the company's involvement in the various markets. He also talks about the continuation of a previous career. A former radio announcer in Detroit, Sandberg hosts the Brembo Red Podcast. Guests have included Jay Leno, Adam Carolla and Wayne Carini. Bollinger manufactures the B1 Electric Sport Utility Truck and B2 Electric Pickup Truck. Both are currently in pre-production mode. The company recently announced the aluminum truck's debut MSRP of $125,000, with reservations of $1,000 available for the pending two vehicles. A 4x4 off-road and street legal, all-wheel-drive electric truck, Bollinger's utilitarian looks challenge the norms of mainstream truck design. Its specs include a 200-mile range, 514 horsepower dual motor and 15-inch ground clearance. For additional information about Brembo, visit: www.brembo.com. Show #562 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 26th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Someone else from Patreon to thank, DAVID KIDD is now a PRODUCER PRODUCTION OF TESLA MODEL 3 IN GIGAFACTORY 3 IN CHINA HAS BEGUN "A new set of images and videos were recently leaked online showing that the Tesla Model 3 has already entered the production phase. The leaked details reveal that the big T is now making the necessary preparations for the trial production runs of the Tesla Model 3 in Gigafactory 3." according to BusinessTimes.cn: "Significantly, the leaked photos reveal images of a couple of partly-built Tesla Model 3 in the assembly line. We have no information if the panels of the two sedans were made on-site or if the electric vehicles were only assembled from shipped components. But, it still goes to show that Gigafactory 3 is now operational and seems to be starting trial assemblies for the Tesla Model 3." https://en.businesstimes.cn/articles/117766/20190827/production-of-tesla-model-3-in-gigafactory-3-in-china-has-begun.htm EUROPE PLUG-IN SALES FOR 2019 H1 "Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 259 000 units in the first half of 2019, 34 % higher than for 2018 H1. These include all Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) in EU and EFTA countries, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles." reports Roland Irle, EV-volumes.com: "Demand and supply experiences a profound shift towards pure electric vehicles (BEV). While their share in plug-in sales was 51 % for 2018 H1, it has increased to 68 % for 2019 H1. The change reflects the introduction of the more stringent WLTP for fuel economy ratings, changes in taxation/grants promoting more BEV uptake and better supply of long-range BEVs. Germany and the Netherlands were the strongest growth contributors, in terms of volumes. Germany has become the largest market for plug-ins in Europe, displacing Norway to the #2 position for the first time. Norway is still the word leader in EV uptake, with a share of 47 % in this year's light vehicle sales, up 10 %-points from 2018 H1." And it pains me to say: "Among the top-15 markets, UK is the only one in reverse this year. PHEVs lost their subsidies and BEV get 1000 GBP less than last year. The UK plans to set the BIK (Benefit In Kind) for company car taxation to zero for BEVs, starting in April 2020. This will postpone many BEV purchases to next year in the UK. Meanwhile, neighbour Ireland has become the fastest growing plug-in market in Europe." Why is BIK at 0% such a big deal? "If you have a company car which is made available for private use (i.e you take it home in the evenings and at weekends), the taxman will apply a benefit-in-kind value to the vehicle. To work out the BIK value of a company car, you multiply the car’s P11D value by the percentage banding the car sits in." Example, a car costs £40,000, it emits 125g/CO2 per km, and is therefore in band 30%, that's £12,000. You then take £12,000 and multiply it by your personal tax band, if you pay 40% tax, then you're paying £4800 every year to the taxman for the privilege of taking that car home at night. Oh and there's an extra 4% tax for diesel. And it gets better, because for EV's only: "the cost of the car could be deducted from the salary pre-tax to pay for a vehicle on the scheme, with the employee effectively paying tax only on the BIK charge." http://www.ev-volumes.com/ https://www.parkers.co.uk/company-cars/what-is-bik/ 2020 CHEVY BOLT IS U.S.’ MOST AFFORDABLE EV PER MILE OF RANGE "After Chevrolet announced the 2020 Bolt EV range and price at 259 miles (417 km) and $37,495 (including $875 destination fee), it now has the lowest price (MSRP + destination charge) per mile of EPA range. The 2020 Bolt EV is #1 at $145 per mile, which is $2 less than the Hyundai Kona Electric and $13 less than the previous 2019 model year Bolt EV." says InsideEVs: "Chevrolet intends to start selling the 2020 Bolt EV this year, but it's rather unlikely we'll see it in Q3, which means we should stick with $135 per mile because that accounts for an extra $1,875 Federal Tax Credit. Of course, another thing is the real world price per mile, after including all the discounts from manufacturer and dealers, but that's untraceable." https://insideevs.com/news/366829/chevrolet-bolt-most-affordable-evs-per-mile/ PORSCHE TAYCAN CROWNED FASTEST FOUR-DOOR EV AT THE NURBURGRING "Porsche is once again demonstrating the performance benefits to embracing electrification with the upcoming Taycan. Ditching the combustion engine altogether, the pure electric vehicle has set a new record for four-door EVs at the Nürburgring by lapping the famous German circuit in 7 minutes and 42 seconds." according to Motor1.com: "Porsche specifies the vehicle used for the record-breaking run was the range-topping variant with dual electric motors, one for each axle. Equipped with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, the EV riding on 21-inch wheels offered more than 600 horsepower at the driver’s disposal." https://www.motor1.com/news/367076/taycan-four-door-ev-nurburgring-record/ VOLKSWAGEN ID 4X SPY SHOTS REVEAL CROZZ "The model that’s leading Volkswagen’s electric-car push—and what Volkswagen has called the replacement for the e-Golf, the city-focused ID 3 hatchback, isn’t coming to America." says Bengt for Green Car Reports: "the U.S. will be getting the second model, a rugged-themed, somewhat taller crossover hatchback based on the ID Crozz concept from 2017. Size-wise, it’s one of the most popular segments of the market, comparable to the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, or Honda CR-V—or the Tesla Model Y. While the ID 3 will offer three different battery packs—48, 62, and 82 kwh (45, 58, and 77 kwh usable capacity)—we expect only the top two to be offered in the ID 4X. U.S. rated range has not been estimated as of yet, but both will have 100-kw CCS DC fast charging." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124726_volkswagen-id-4x-spy-shots-reveal-production-direction-for-crozz-electric-crossover NIU PLANS NEW AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC MOPED BRAND GOVA STARTING AT AROUND $422 "NIU sold nearly 100,000 electric scooters worldwide last quarter, has expanded its sharing programs into over a dozen countries including the United States, and has shown Q2 revenue of US $74.8 million with a year-over-year growth of 38%." reports Micah Toll for electrek: "While NIU’s high-tech, connected scooters are firmly planted in the premium electric scooter category, the company also wants to target the medium-level scooter market. To do so, the company is at work on three different mid-range electric scooters for its new Gova line: The Gova G1, Gova G3, and Gova G5. NIU expects the G1 to debut in the price range of US $422-$563. To reach such low prices, the Gova line won’t contain many of the smart features that make NIU’s main line of electric scooters so connected." https://electrek.co/2019/08/25/niu-gova-electric-moped-scooter/ TESLA SCOUTING NEW FACTORY LOCATIONS IN GERMANY "German newspaper Rheinische Post reported on August 25 that representatives from Tesla have been scouting locations for a possible European factory in the state of North Rhine–Westphalia, which is located in western Germany and shares a border with the Netherlands and Belgium" says CleanTechnica today: "Representatives of the government and of Tesla have declined to elaborate further on the subject." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/26/tesla-scouting-new-factory-locations-in-germany/ BOLLINGER'S BOXYLICIOUS OFF-ROADING EVS WILL BREAK COVER ON SEPTEMBER 26 "New York-based Bollinger Motors once looked like it would beat automakers big and small to the electric off-roader segment. Rival Rivian stole its thunder by presenting two head-turning concept cars during the 2018 Los Angeles auto show, but Bollinger is ready for a tussle. It's fine-tuning its first prototypes, and it will present them to the public on September 26." writes Autoblog: "The truck depicted in the 50-second long clip is only partially assembled, but we can tell it hasn't changed much visually in its transition from a .jpg to a test mule. It still looks like a retro-inspired, cinder block-shaped Jeep Wrangler-Land Rover Defender cross packed with clever features, including a pass-through that stretches from the frunk to the trunk, six individual removable roof panels, and lots of storage compartments." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/08/26/bollinger-motors-electric-b1-suv-b2-truck-unveiling-scheduled/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Episode 44 is full of goodness, including a conversation with fellow podcaster Ronnie Wetch from C10 Talk, a look at electric trucks with the founder and CEO of electric vehicle startup Bollinger Motors, Robert Bollinger, and a great clip from SEMA’s Brew Talks about mentorship and vocational education. Ben Palmer from American Expedition Vehicles also drops by with pizza, Dr. Pepper, and a little truck insight.
Robert Bollinger is the CEO of Bollinger Motors. Bollinger Motors are the creators of the world's first all-electric sport utility truck. Bollinger Motors started in upstate New York in 2014 in a renovated car repair shop and 20 months later they had a prototype truck. The goal was an all-electric, dual-motor drivetrain with All-wheel drive and 50/50 weight distribution. The end result is a truck for both work and play. Not satisfied with one vehicle the team then switched to the all electric B2 Pickup Truck incorporating even more cargo options. Both the B1 and the B2 are Class 3 work trucks (10,001 gross vehicle weight rating) with a hauling capacity of 5000 lbs.
