Sean Penn is a powerhouse film performer capable of intensely moving work, who has gone from strength to strength during a colorful film career, and who has drawn much media attention for his stormy private life and political viewpoints. Sean Justin Penn was born in Los Angeles, California, the second son of actress Eileen Ryan (née Annucci) and director, actor, and writer Leo Penn. His brother was actor Chris Penn. His father was from a Lithuanian Jewish/Russian Jewish family, and his mother is of half-Italian and half Irish descent. Penn first appeared in roles as strong-headed or unruly youths such as the military cadet defending his academy against closure in Taps (1981), then as fast-talking surfer stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Fans and critics were enthused about his obvious talent and he next contributed a stellar performance alongside Timothy Hutton in the Cold War spy thriller The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), followed by a teaming with icy Christopher Walken in the chilling At Close Range (1986). The youthful Sean then paired up with his then wife, pop diva Madonna in the woeful, and painful, Shanghai Surprise (1986), which was savaged by the critics, but Sean bounced back with a great job as a hot-headed young cop in Colors (1988), gave another searing performance as a US soldier in Vietnam committing atrocities in Casualties of War (1989) and appeared alongside Robert De Niro in the uneven comedy We're No Angels (1989). However, the 1990s was the decade in which Sean really got noticed by critics as a mature, versatile and accomplished actor, with a string of dynamic performances in first-class films. Almost unrecognisable with frizzy hair and thin rimmed glasses, Penn was simply brilliant as corrupt lawyer David Kleinfeld in the Brian De Palma gangster movie Carlito's Way (1993) and he was still in trouble with authority as a Death Row inmate pleading with a caring nun to save his life in Dead Man Walking (1995), for which he received his first Oscar nomination. Sean then played the brother of wealthy Michael Douglas, involving him in a mind-snapping scheme in The Game (1997) and also landed the lead role of Sgt. Eddie Walsh in the star-studded anti-war film The Thin Red Line (1998), before finishing the 1990s playing an offbeat jazz musician (and scoring another Oscar nomination) in Sweet and Lowdown (1999). The gifted and versatile Sean had also moved into directing, with the quirky but interesting The Indian Runner (1991), about two brothers with vastly opposing views on life, and in 1995 he directed Jack Nicholson in The Crossing Guard (1995). Both films received overall positive reviews from critics. Moving into the new century, Sean remained busy in front of the cameras with even more outstanding work: a mentally disabled father fighting for custody of his seven-year-old daughter (and receiving a third Oscar nomination) for I Am Sam (2001); an anguished father seeking revenge for his daughter's murder in the gut-wrenching Clint Eastwood-directed Mystic River (2003) (for which he won the Oscar as Best Actor); a mortally ill college professor in 21 Grams (2003) and a possessed businessman in The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004). Live long and prosper, Trekkies! We are here with the inimitable Rosalind Chao. You Might Know Her From: The Joy Luck Club, Mulan, 3 Body Problem, Sweet Tooth, M*A*S*H, Star Trek: The Next Generation & Deep Space Nine, I Am Sam, Just Like Heaven, Freaky Friday, and The L Word: Generation Q. Rosalind gave us all the goods on “the summer of Chao” with her one-two fantasy punch on Netflix, the fervent (and divided) base of fans formerly known as “trekkies,” and her history-making turns in The Joy Luck Club and the live-action Mulan (but is the industry making any progress? Sigh.) Plus, Rosalind teases Pei-Pei's return in Freaky Friday 2, explains why it was important to embrace the trans community with her role on Gen Q, and gets to the bottom of her tucking her hair behind her ear in Just Like Heaven where Reese Witherspoon f*cks a ghost. Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder memorably satirized both the Hollywood war film and the often ridiculous lengths actors will go to in order to "capture" the characters they're playing. While the notion that Robert Downey Jr's Kirk Lazarus would dye his skin to play an African-American might be hard to swallow, it wasn't entirely out there fourteen years ago. Hollywood's self-seriousness was arguably at its zenith at this moment in time, and Stiller's film brilliantly satirizes some of the more infamous performances of the era, such as Sean Penn in I Am Sam, Eddie Murphy in Norbit & The Klumps, and more. It's also just a damn funny film (with Tom Cruise as you've truly never seen him before in a Harvey Weinstein/Scott Rudin satire that went over a lot of heads back then), as we dig into Tropic Thunder in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie!

We keep it family style for November's theme of COMFORT FOOD and what better way to keep it clean than watching movies where actors play mentally challenged characters? Unlike “Radio” and “Bill” this next choice is not based on a true story so all of this was as intentional as could possibly be. These movies are saccharine by nature but they might have to amputate your feet after this one. They really thought they had a special award winner on their hands with the very blue (literally) “I Am Sam” directed by Jessie Nelson in 2001 and starring Sean Penn as “Sam” a man who with the mental capacity of a seven year old who raw dogs an adorable baby girl (played by Dakota Fanning) into this world. How does he get to have an apartment that nice in San Francisco as a single father working at Starbucks? This movie is pretty much an ad for Starbucks but even Starbucks, in it's product placement, can't pretend to pay a mentally disabled single father a living wage. Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer as an angry lawyer who learns a thing or two from this simple father and they might have fucked in some cut scene in this movie. We're fairly certain. Does Sam get to keep custody of his daughter? Well, you'll have to sit though many “choices” to find out OR you can hear us tell it. Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're making music with 1994's Corrina, Corrina, written and directed by Jessie Nelson. This was Nelson's first film, before going on to write and direct I Am Sam in 2002 and also penning the smash Broadway musical adaptation of the film Waitress. Whoopi Goldberg, following on from the huge success of numerous films such as Sister Act and Ghost (for which she won an Oscar), also proved a hugely popular host of the Academy Awards the year this film was released, doing it three more times over the course of the following ten years. Tonight we're unpicking the bonds that Corrina forms with Manny and Molly in this comic romantic drama. And we have a very special guest with us to explore these relationships. Joining us is actress, singer and writer Deborah Tracey. You can follow Deb on Twitter here and and Instagram here. In this episode, we stumble upon a few more questions about marriage. Which came first the egg or the chicken? Tune in, enjoy the show, and tell us what you thought.

This Pfriday, we're talking about the pros and pitfalls of parenting as seen through the eyes of the characters in I AM SAM, the 2001 drama that was probably never meant to be watched from a 2021 perspective. We've got our Starbucks firmly in hand and we have multiple points to cover for this case: is La Pfeiffer's "biggest" moment as the marshmallow-popping Rita actually her best, the breakout star turn of eight-year old Dakota Fanning, why we love Dianne Wiest, a declaration of a certain nemesis of the pod, as well as the packed and ever-changing landscape of the Supporting Actress awards field in 2001. Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies Podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of Dakota Fanning. Best known for her roles as Rachel in War of the Worlds (2005), Lucy in I Am Sam (2001), and Lupita in Man on Fire (2004), Dakota is the youngest actor ever to be invited to the AMPAS. Joined by guest Munson, Sam Phillips, we discuss the 3 distinct phases of Fanning's career (childhood, teen, and adult), her resume of working with acting legends, Sam's hilarious review of the abomination that is The Cat in the Hat (2003), and posit why James' cat loved Coraline (2009) more than him. Where does Fanning's career rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
With the Oscars just around the corner, we tackle a pet peeve: abled actors playing disabled characters and winning butt loads of awards for it. What is The Academy's fascination with these performances? Why are they still so prevalent? And how does the award-winning trend bar accessibility both in front of and behind the camera? With in-depth discussion on Rain Man, My Left Foot, and Scent of a Woman, and reference to Forrest Gump, Sling Blade, Coming Home, The King's Speech, Ordinary People, Joker, Silver Lining's Playbook, I Am Sam, The Theory of Everything, and more. On this week's return of our Sunday Special, Jasmine and Zach get really worked up about this stupid STUPID movie and its horrendous depiction of ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. This movie is like Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder meets Rain Man meets Sean Penn from I Am Sam. It's so bad I thought it was something released in the 80's or 90's about autism. This is so, so sad. Alexa please play Mad World by Gary Jules. The pair you are about to hear are not professionals. Their opinions and beliefs are not fact. They are just two idiots that are Spitting Nonsense. Hey folks. Episode 13 sees our first thematic Daddy's Introduction To... compilation as we listen to movie songs. Not just any movie songs though - these are all inextricably linked to their parent film - in most cases because they were written for them. So - no Unchained Melody (Ghost) or In Dreams (Blue Velvet). Or indeed all those Beatles covers for I Am Sam. This was a fun romp through many great songs - some oscar winning. Joel's revenge stays in the same theme too. Recently, Neil completed the formal 60th CD in Joel's collection and we have run out of room in the official DIT storage system. However, there is plenty more to pull together - possible a second movie songs or a movie music. Otherwise, Generation Mix might end in 2 years time... It's hard out there for an obscenely rich lady with unchecked power and limitless resources. Sometimes you just need to make an utterly tone-deaf film and call it Music. Sometimes you make your main character autistic. Sometimes you research the role by passively watching I Am Sam while you refresh your Twitter feed and consulting a hate group. Normal stuff. Wouldn't you know it, people got pissed off at Music before it was even released. What a shame! We decided to do what Sia begged us all to do: Watch her shitty movie before we call it shitty. We also use this very special episode to talk about her career as a dedicated poster and discuss her large adult sons. En 1966, The Mamas And The Papas, “la familia real de Laurel Canyon”, hicieron su debut con el álbum If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears y la dieron a conocer a nivel popular en Estados Unidos. Wow, how did I ever give this mindblowingly atrocious film 5/10?! If you've ever hated Sean Penn for taking on roles full of mannerisms, this will have you longing for I Am Sam. Truly one of the worst films that of that decade. Jawdroppingly terrible and inept and bizarre - how someone ever though even the idea of the screenplay (or three or four screenplays as its such a jarring mess) should've been possible to make into a film. Its something like Robert Smith of The Cure lives in a mansion in Ireland, goes to watch a Talking Heads concert and is inspired to shoot Nazis. Seriously not even making that up. Def the worst Sean Penn performance of all.

Heather Nova in conversation After graduating from RISD, Nova moved to London, a place she called home for twelve years (she already had British citizenship due to her Bermudian origins). In 1990, she released her first recording, Heather Frith, an EP; she had not yet changed her name. The new name debuted in 1993 with her second EP entitled Spirit In You and her first full album, the critically acclaimed Glow Stars, produced by Felix Tod, after being discovered by Big Cat label manager Steven Abbott. The success of the album led her to record and release her first live album Blow the same year. In 1994, she released Oyster, her breakout album that was produced by Youth and Felix Tod and began almost two years of touring. Another live album, Live From The Milky Way, was released in 1995. Siren, the follow-up to Oyster because of the hit single "London Rain", was released in 1998, after which she joined Sarah McLachlan and others on the North American Lilith Fair, a music festival with only female performers.[citation needed] After the release of Siren and a world tour to promote the record, Nova took a break while various television show and film soundtracks licensed some of her songs and her record company (Sony Records/The WORK Group) released various singles from the album, which received only moderate play on America's MTV2, Europe's MTV and Canada's MuchMusic and on mainstream radio, although she was popular on college radio. Also during this time, she recorded a version of the often covered traditional song "Gloomy Sunday", for the German WWII feature film drama Ein Lied Von Liebe Und Tod (released under the international title, Gloomy Sunday). In 2000, Nova released yet another live album entitled Wonderlust. Over the years, Nova has written and recorded over 120 songs. With the release of South (2001), she returned to the international spotlight with an appearance on the soundtrack of the John Cusack movie Serendipity. She also appeared on the soundtrack to the Sean Penn film, I Am Sam and sung on The Crow: City of Angels. A collaboration with Swedish indiepop band Eskobar, for a song called "Someone New", led to its music video being played primarily on America's MTV. Storm, Nova's fifth studio album, recorded with Mercury Rev as her backing band, was released in late 2003 on her own Saltwater label, went top 5 in Germany, followed by a tour during which Nova became pregnant. She quickly followed the birth of her son with her next record Redbird, released in 2005, again Top 10 in Germany. In December 2005, Nova released Together As One, an EP supporting the Bermuda Sloop Foundation which operates the Bermuda sloop Spirit of Bermuda. In 2002, she self-published The Sorrowjoy, a 72-page book of her poetry and drawings. An album of the same name was unofficially released in March 2006, which featured Nova reading the poems from her book set to ambient music. She also collaborated with the German trance artist ATB on tracks like "Love Will Find You", "Feel You Like A River" and the international hit "Renegade". In 2008, she released an album called The Jasmine Flower, a solar powered acoustic album recorded in Bermuda, before touring as an acoustic tour. In late 2010 she embarked on another European tour promoting her The Jasmine Flower album. On this tour, she played four unreleased songs ("Save A Little Piece Of Tomorrow", "Everything Changes", "Burning To Love", and "Turn The Compass Round") that are included on her most recent album, 300 Days At SeaProduced by Felix Tod.. This full-band album was released on May 27, 2011. In late 2014, she began work on her most recent project, a new studio album called "The Way it Feels" which was released to critical acclaim in May 2015. Her new album, Pearl, will be released in Spring 2019.
Bermudian songstress Heather Nova is my guest this week on NSTS. She grew up on a sailboat in the Caribbean, and her songs appear on the soundtracks of The Crow and I Am Sam, and on shows like Dawson's Creek. Her new record, called Pearl, drops on June 28. Heather's list is full of skin-vibrating tunes, and we chat about Kris Kristofferson's advice to Joni Mitchell, Heather's reggae musician brother Mishka, seeing Patti Smith live, Neil Young's guitar solos, and our introductions to Kate Bush. Next time she's bringing her guitar. Nova's playlist: Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should Come Over Neil Young - Like A Hurricane Patti Smith - Dancing Barefoot Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill Joni Mitchell - All I Want Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees Mishka - Above The Bones

The late-90s film “The Other Sister” features Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi as a mentally-challenged couple navigating life in the big city. Directed by Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman”, “The Princess Diaries”), the film was marketed as a rom-com with a twist. Diane Keaton plays a wealthy Republican WASP-type mom that smothers her daughter (Juliette Lewis' character) all while looking chic AF. Lewis' portrayal garnered all the wrong attention from critics when the film opened and the host dive into those reactions as well as more contemporary takes. The hosts discuss context, sensitivity and acting skills in comparing this film to other portrayals of people with intellectual disabilities (“Forrest Gump”, “Radio”, “I Am Sam”). Is your head good? Your brain all there, containing all the knowledge you need? Can you do maths? If not, you're probably just dumb which is obviously WAY different from being autistic or mentally retarded. Cinema has really run the gamut when it comes to depictions of the neuro atypical. We're talking about it on today's Adult Films with Collin and Ron, the only podcast about movies! Today the boys are joined by comedian, conquerer of the skies, and actual autistic person Sean Schellhammer! They talk Rain Man, Forrest Gump, Tropic Thunder, I Am Sam, The Other Sister, and so much more! Plus, a game of "Hawke or Cage", and those sweet recommendations!
Last week HFPA Member Katherine Tulich sat down with Dakota Fanning for an in-depth conversation about Fanning's career that already dates back almost two decades. The two discuss everything from her starring in commercials at age six to her motion picture debut in I Am Sam to her new television series The Alienist, where she stars opposite Daniel Bruhl and Luke Evans. They also talk about her family, notes from her mother, why she took so many suitcases to Budapest, her role in the film series Twilight, directing her first short film "Hello Apartment", and briefly tease her upcoming projects Ocean's 8 and The Bell Jar.

It appears as if we hear more and more Beatles tracks when I go to see a movie. Just went to see/hear McCartney sing Maggie Mae in Pirates of the Caribbean. But while settling in for the movie in the theater, a trailer was shown for the new movie "Justice League Come Together": Come Together, covered by Gary Clark Jr and Junkie XL. And then a commercial was shown that featured a cover version of Across the Universe! As a true Beatles fan, I welcome every opportunity to hear their tracks; but in this case, I had some trepidation. Would Lennon have approved of using his song to promote sales of (Samsung) cell-phones? I have my doubts. On the other hand, I liked the cover version, it sounded great (and loud) in the theater. This reminded me that Lennon is on record (Rolling Stone interview) that he considered ATU as one of his better songs: ""It's one of the best lyrics I've written. In fact, it could be the best." He added: "It's good poetry, or whatever you call it, without chewin' it. See, the ones I like are the ones that stand as words, without melody. They don't have to have any melody, like a poem, you can read them." But he felt let down by the way the song was recorded and produced. I think he meant that McCartney didn't put any effort in it, and they never got down to laying down a quality track. And the guitars were out of tune (which I don't hear, but Lennon has a sharper ear than me). Hence the opportunity to use the backing track of the Samsung commercial "New Normal" with the vocals of Lennon himself (using Take 2 of 4 February 1968). The Samsung version is actually the cover sang by Rufus Wainwright for the movie I Am Sam. They sang in the same key, resulting in a nice upgrade. Would Lennon feel better now?

Check out this film's post @ MovieJeff.com here » https://themoviereviewshow.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-theory-of-everything.html and leave a comment The Theory of Everything is a 2014 biographical romantic drama film directed by James Marsh about Eddie Redmayne doing a Stephen Hawking impression and it's not as bad as I Am Sam because Hawking is real or maybe it's worse because of that? Anyway, this is the first episode of this incredibly stupid thing I've been doing for the last 37 years now.
