Jason Mayden walked into Jordan Brand in 2001 as its first design intern. He designed the Air Jordan 2009 and the Jordan CP3.II, left in 2014 to build his own companies, and came back a decade later to run design for the entire brand. This past May he stepped out of that job into one that did not exist until he took it, VP of Jordan Visioneering and LA28 Creative Lead.We talked about the Air Jordan 41, and about almost everything except the spec sheet.He explains what he had to unpack coming back into the building, and lands on the line that frames the whole conversation, that this is a reverential era and not a referential one. Our crime fighting trio voluntarily hurls themselves into Joel Schumacher's radioactive fever dream this week by revisiting Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), where every streetlight is apparently a blacklight, every criminal belongs to a themed fashion gang, and Val Kilmer is unanimously crowned the hottest Batman to ever brood beneath a cowl. Sorry, George. The gang breaks down why Kilmer somehow nails both Bruce Wayne and Batman, why Clooney spends most of Batman & Robin sounding like he's reading cue cards held hostage just off camera, and why Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze deserves either an Oscar or a lifetime ban from speaking in public. Somewhere between ice pun #47 and ice pun #72, the conversation evolves into the realization that Batman could have ended the movie 15 different times if he'd simply thrown literally anything at Mr. Freeze instead of politely waiting for him to finish his stand-up routine. Sedan 60-talet har DC snärjt in Batmanmytologin i så många alternativa världar, tidsresor och -paradoxer att det är omöjligt att reda ut härvan.I ett parallellt universum är det till exempel Bruce Wayne som skjuts ihjäl i gränden utanför biografen och inte föräldrarna Thomas och Martha. Händelsen utlöser en märklig kedjereaktion som slutar med att Thomas blir Batman och Martha Jokern.“Vill du veta hur jag fick mina ärr?” frågar Heath Ledgers Joker vid flera tillfällen i Christopher Nolans film “The dark knight” och pekar på ärren som vanställer hans mun till ett groteskt flin. Att Jokern inte har ett ursprung – han har flera.Den insikten blir särskilt tydlig när man läser essäsamlingen ”The Joker: A serious study of the clown prince of crime” där ett tjugotal forskare och skribenter försöker komma underfund med vem Jokern verkligen är.En av de medverkande drar paralleller till Lady Gagas postmoderna identitetspussel – även en konstruerad identitet är en identitet. En annan kallar den narrande förbrytaren för en Nietzscheansk övermänniska. Däremellan finns en anekdot om hur Tea party-rörelsen spred bilder på den dåvarande amerikanske presidenten Barack Obama med Jokerns ansiktsmålning. Obamas liberala politik var jämförbar med Jokerns anarki, menade den högerpopulistiska rörelsen.Enligt den slovenske filosofen Slavoj Žižeks analys av ”The dark knight” är Jokern den ende sanningssägaren i en värld där eliten upprätthåller ordningen med ädla lögner.Men den ena teorin tycks tala emot den andra.Så när författaren Mark Waid tolkade Jokerns ursprung i ett seriealbum från 2007 lät han skurken själv spela ut en kortlek där varje spelkort erbjöd en möjlig förklaring. En misslyckad komiker, en obetydlig gangster, ett kriminellt geni.Så? Vem var han? Vilket alternativ var det rätta? “Det beror på hur man blandar korten”, skrattar Jokern och kuperar leken.Att Jokern inte har någon sann identitet understryks av att han till skillnad från sin ärkefiende inte bär en mask. Han behöver ingen mask eftersom han jämfört med Batman är mer naturkraft än människa. Som Brian Azzallero skriver är Jokern en sjukdom. En sjukdom som saknar botemedel. En sjukdom som härjade långt innan Gotham restes och som kommer att fortsätta härja långt efter staden brunnit ner.Men förmodligen lyckades Grant Morrison knäcka nöten redan 1989 i serietidningen “Arkham asylum”. Här berättar en psykolog på Arkhams kombinerade fängelse och mentalsjukhus att hon ägnat år åt att analysera Jokern för att hitta roten till hans identitet och därigenom hans drivkraft. Men arbetet var fruktlöst. Det enda hon kom fram till är att Jokern saknar personlighet och därför måste skapa sig själv från grunden varje dag.Närmare än så lär vi inte komma Jokern som person. Men i och med att hans flyktighet är evig så får han också en betydelse som sträcker sig bortom den enskilda individen. Han blir ondskan som alltid finns där, eller snarare ondskan som vi människor tenderar att återskapa gång på gång, trots alla våra goda avsikter.Att Jokern är livskraftig än i dag beror på att han förvandlas och återföds varje gång han hamnar i händerna på en ny generation berättare. Kanske var det just det Whitney Ellsworth förutspådde när han för 79 år sedan lade till den där sista rutan och för evigt förändrade den populärkulturella historieskrivningen. För en sak är säker. I love Batman and my favorite Batman is Michael Keaton. But it's not just his portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne that I love. I love Tim Burton's art style and direction and I absolutely love Danny Elfman's musical score. But my favorite piece of that score is not one that you'll find in either Batman or Batman Returns. It's a version that is only found here in Oklahoma each fall on the grounds surrounding the Palace on the Prairie. This Father's Day weekend, it happened, but not before they worked their way through Batman Begins first. The Batman Begins debrief alone is worth the price of admission: Natalie still doesn't understand why Bruce Wayne's parents had to die and genuinely wondered whether Batman was going to kill Rachel and Alfred in the film. She also thought that Batman can, apparently, talk to bats. Then came The Dark Knight. Doug prepped her on the Joker's philosophy, the importance of Batman's no-kill rule, and the practical effects behind the hospital explosion, which Doug and Jill actually witnessed being filmed when they lived downtown Chicago. Natalie handled the pencil scene with more composure than expected. She processed the ferry sequence. She understood the stakes, and spent the entire climax waiting for Bane to show up. And when it was over, she looked at her dad and said: "I see why you like it." Ten years. Worth every second. Also this episode: a genuinely great question — if you could go back to high school or college and take one class again with everything you know now, which class would you choose? Justin picks social studies, psychology, astronomy, and a very specific European history class he completely wasted. Batman is the World's Greatest Detective. He lives in a cave under a barn. He got there by accident. This is the official origin story.This week Zach and Mike go back to Batman Annual Issue 1 (1961) to find out how Bruce Wayne discovered the Batcave. A story written by Bill Finger, drawn by Sheldon Moldoff, and so completely unhinged that Mike spends most of it convinced Batman is just a drug addict having vivid hallucinations in an alley somewhere.Here's what actually happens: Bruce buys a house. He was going to use the barn as his secret headquarters, just a regular barn. The floor gives way, he falls into a cave full of bats, and he decides on the spot that this is an omen. The Batcave is born. That's it. That's the origin. Two pages.But then they find a piece of ancient pottery that says "Death to the Man of Two Identities" and naturally the only logical next step is to travel back in time via hypnosis to 1700s Gotham to figure out what it means. They bring their costumes. Batman builds a periscope, a surveillance mirror system, a utility belt, and a trophy room for a colonial spy with a broken leg named Jeremy Coe. Who, it turns out, discovered the cave first, called it the bat cave because of the bats, and is technically the original Batman.
