It was an honour and real pleasure to chat an hour with Elisabet Sahtouris, a renowned evolution biologist and futurist who is exploring the relevance of biological systems to organizational design in business, government and globalisation. She currently holds the Elisabet Sahtouris Chair in Living Economies at the World Business Academy, Santa Barbara, California and is a Professor in Residence at Chaminade University, School of Business & Communication, Honolulu, Hawaii. Her books include “A Walk Through Time: From Stardust to Us”, “Biology Revisioned” (co-authored with Willis Harman), “EarthDance: Living Systems in Evolution”, and “Gaia's Dance: The Story of Earth & Us”. Elisabet is currently visiting Estonia, speaking at many venues and events (the complete list of the speaking engagements can be found on the Gaia Akadeemia webpage). “Caterpillars chew their way through ecosystems leaving a path of destruction as they get fatter and fatter. A caterpillar can eat up to three hundred times its own weight in a day, devastating many plants in the process, continuing to eat until it's so bloated that it hangs itself up and goes to sleep, its skin hardening into a chrysalis. Then, within the chrysalis, within the body of the dormant caterpillar, a new and very different kind of creature, the butterfly, starts to form. These changes occur when the crisis of overeating, fatigue and breakdown opens the door for the caterpillar gradually to begin developing into a butterfly. Such metamorphosis makes a good metaphor for the great changes we are experiencing in the world today. Our bloated old system is rapidly becoming defunct while the vision of a new and very different society is now emerging like a butterfly, seeing our human society not in the metaphors and models of mechanism as well-oiled social machinery, but in those of evolving, self-organising and intelligent living organism.” – Elisabet Sahtouris Listen and enjoy!

The son of a professional photographer in a small Texas town, Aaron was immersed in the creative process from birth. His earliest memories include working in a darkroom with his father, the faint glow of the safelight above as he witnessed images come to life through the development process. From this grew his ability to visualize images and understand the importance of the creative process and the impact of design. He carried those lessons forward, as later in life he studied fashion design at the Art Institute of Dallas and creative writing at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Life took Aaron far from the art world when he enlisted in the Unites States Navy in 2004. After serving 7 years on Active Duty, he transitioned to the Reserve force where he continues to serve today as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He has served multiple shipboard and ground-based tours in the Middle East, to include combat operations in Iraq. It is through these experiences that he rekindled his passion for the visual arts, discovering abstract painting as a way to navigate his emotional and physical responses to his experiences overseas. Aaron has since evolved and grown his work far beyond art for therapy, creating a voice and bringing forward an authenticity through his work many can relate to. An artist, writer, designer, and musician, Aaron has shown his work in multiple galleries and private collections across the United States, as well as online through multiple virtual exhibitions. He recently completed an artist mentorship program with renowned abstract artist Ty Nathan Clark, and is now focused on a series of work exploring the dissonance between experience and memory. Lance Askildson, Professor of Language and Linguistics at Chaminade University, helps us understand languages and linguistics in the world today, how they are coming together and how they are changing, and how it is becoming more important that we reach out to other cultures and learn languages other than English. But what cultures and what languages should we study, and why, and how many of them. For that, we have to anticipate geopolitical and demographic changes, and business and occupational requirements, now and going forward. European languages, Asian languages, Middle Eastern languages, African languages? The choices and the learning curves are challenging. It's not often one gets to talk to a brilliant scientist about college admissions and Paul Tough's book “The Years That Matter Most,” Ken Jennings vs. an artificial intelligence, an internship at Google vs. a Harvard undergraduate degree, Stanford University's wondrous document “Uncharted Territory,” and the incredible insights of excellent indigenous science. Even better is the fact that I caught all of this conversation on tape and can present it here in this podcast. Dr. Helen Turner is the VP for Strategy and Innovation at Chaminade University, a small, private college sitting on a lovely hillside above the city of Honolulu. Her resume is 14 pages long; she is a brilliant thinker and articulate spokesperson for things in K-12 and higher education we should all be excited about. (And in a couple cases, such as CRISPR being driven “underground,” very concerned about.) She has a strong bias towards action and innovation. Over a 90-minute interview, which will be released in two parts, Helen and I dug deep into what I called Ten Questions With Helen Turner. Yes, in couple cases we cheated by adding in bonus questions! This recording was done in a special dual-person soundproof phone booth at the Entrepreneurs Sandbox, managed by the one and only BoxJelly Co-Working team. So enjoy, and please give us a rating in your favorite podcast store! From Chaminade.edu we learn: “Dr. Turner is an internationally-regarded researcher in molecular immunology. As well as her position at Chaminade, she holds academic affiliations with the John A. Burns School of Medicine and Department of Microbiology at the University of Hawaii and serves on numerous scientific advisory boards. She collaborates with an extensive network of scientists nation-wide and has trained numerous graduate students for careers as biomedical investigators, science administrators and academics. Previous to her Chaminade appointment, she was an Associate Director of Research at The Queen's Center for Biomedical Research in Honolulu. Current projects in the Turner laboratory focus on mast cell ion channels as novel targets for therapeutic intervention in inflammatory pathologies, and on the molecular mechanisms by which cannabinoid compounds act as modulators of the immune system. Dr Turner's relatively young laboratory has been strikingly successful at winning grants from private foundations (The Leahi Fund for Pulmonary Research, The Victoria and Bradley Geist Foundation, The Culpeper Biomedical Pilot Initiative, and the Queen Emma Research Foundation), and from Federal sources (National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institute of Allergic and Inflammatory Disease, and the Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence). In addition to her efforts in seeking funding for her own program, Dr. Turner acts as an invited grant reviewer for the NIH, the British Welcome Trust, and several other funding bodies. Dr. Turner trained at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories and received her Ph.D. from the University of London in 1998. Following a post-doctoral period at the Beth Israel Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, she assumed her position at Queens in 2000. While at Queens, Dr. Turner was head of a team of 10 scientists, whose efforts centered around the biology of mast cells. These immunocytes are central to inflammatory responses and are key players in pathologies such as asthma, eczema and multiple sclerosis.” For more on Dr. Turner's work, go to Chaminade's website. In our latest episode, Geoff talks with some of his co-participants in The Qualities of Mercy Project, an initiative among Shakespeare instructors who collaborated to bring The Merchant of Venice to college campuses nationwide and to discuss what "mercy" means in a regional sense. Our guests discuss the ways their students responded to the plays notions of forgiveness and mercy, ostracization, and racism/antisemitism in the wake of some of America's deadliest shootings, as well as the implications of anachronism and letting Shakespeare "off the hook." Also, what does it mean for pedagogy when we literally ask students to "embody" Shakespeare's plays and cultural discussions?Joining Geoff for this conversation are Jonathan Burton of Whittier College, Ambereen Dadabhoy of Harvey Mudd College, Brooke Carlson of Chaminade University, and Mary Janell Metzger of Western Washington UniversityWe'll be back in two weeks with another group of participants in this incredible project. In the meantime, you can watch the project here! Please remember to share, rate, review, and subscribe! If I were to line up all the people I know who understand individualized learning, Susannah Johnson stands at the front…by a lot. After a career in business she moved to the classroom; the lives of kids have been impacted ever since. She is the kind of teacher (meaning guide-on-the side, sponsor, coach, mentor) I would have thrived with when I was in school 40 years ago. After 12 years in business (fitness management positions and exercise instruction), and years in the classroom at Assets School in Honolulu, she recently formed her own consultancy, called Individualized Realized, LLC. Susannah now works with public, private and charter schools on several continents to help educators and education leaders realize student-driven learning. She has a Master of Education degree in Instructional Leadership from Chaminade University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Southern Illinois University. She is a frequent Schools of the Future conference presenter: “The Chaotic Classroom” in 2012, “Unlocking the Exceptional Mind” in 2014, “Individualized Realized” and “Critical Thinking through Individualized Learning” in 2016, and “But Hawaii is Already Diverse” in 2018. This time Geoff and Michael talk to Brooke Carlson of Chaminade University in Hawaii about what it means to teach in the margins. Talking about non-traditional student populations, what does it mean to adapt a more traditional humanities model to get at what we think is important? We talk about what it means to try to foster a lifetime love of learning, how to use time and digital tools to your benefit and creating a culture where failure doesn’t mean the end of your experience, but rather a beginning. Also, how do we press the notions of “decolonizing” of syllabi and content into a framework that benefits our non-traditional or marginalized students? Please remember to like, share, rate, and subscribe – and reach out to us on social media (Twitter and Facebook) at humanitiesremix, or e-mail us at humanitiesremix@gmail.com.

In episode seven of the Identification season, Just Science interviews Carlos Gutierrez, a lecturer at Chaminade University of Honolulu, about the new field of Forensic Microanthropology. After finding an unidentified bone, forensic anthropologists must first determine if it belonged to a human or an animal. If it’s an animal bone, they can move on to other case work, but human remains require a much more involved and expensive forensic processes such as DNA testing. For developing countries these tests can be too expensive and time consuming. With limited resources and tight timelines, Carlos Gutierrez wanted to find an affordable and timely way to analyze remains and differentiate between human and animal bones. It was through this need that Forensic Microanthropology was born. Listen along as he discusses the details of Forensic Microanthropology in this episode of Just Science. This season is funded by the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence.

In the third episode of the 2018 NIJ R&D Season, Just Science speaks with Dr. David Carter, Director and Associate Professor of Forensic Sciences at Chaminade University of Honolulu, about his research, “Evaluating the Skin Microbiome as Trace Evidence on Common Surface Types.” Microbiome trace evidence samples can be tracked back to individuals with high accuracy and used to narrow pools of suspects even when multiple people have touched a surface. The potential for microorganisms to reveal whether a particular person has touched an object is substantial. Listen along as Dr. Morgan and Dr. Carter discuss the implications of these findings as they apply to forensic science. This season is funded by the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence.
