Meet Ope Bukola. She's founder and CEO of Kibo School, an online university in Africa. Ope is both relatable and remarkable. Relatable because, like so many founders, at one point she looked around her company and felt a pang of disappointment - everyone was falling short of her expectations. Remarkable because, instead of blaming her team, she did the uncomfortable thing and asked how she was contributing to that dynamic. She realized she was giving her people lots of autonomy - the thing she most craved. But she was failing to give them what they needed. This included clarifying her expectations, driving alignment around a problem statement, and giving regular feedback. In this episode, you also get to hear from Ope's coach Mandisa Khanna! Mandisa helped untangle Ope's frustration and helped her acknowledge a blindspot: because Ope thrived in ambiguity, she was blind to the structure that others on her team might need. With Mandisa's support, Ope experimented with new and sometimes unnatural behaviors. Eventually, Ope learned that managing her team more closely (the thing she silently dreaded) actually unlocked a way more entrepreneurial culture (the thing she wanted most). When people understood what she wanted, they were more creative, risk-taking, and agile. If you've ever thought, “Do I have to fire everybody?” Ope shares an inspiring alternative. Favorite moments of the episode:5:04 Ope “hits a management wall”. She cancels 1:1s with direct reports when she sees the agendas (they were supposed to populate) are empty!11:04 Ope realizes that by not making her expectations explicit and known, she is making it virtually impossible for her direct reports to meet those expectations16:27 Ope accepts that sharing her expectations and offering up frameworks and guiding principles are critical elements to managing well at Kibo19:48 Mandisa shares how Ope's talent for structured thinking and strong goal orientation feeds into a "talent blindspot" (Ope underestimates how distinct and rare that talent / distinction truly is)27:16 Mandisa and Ope describe what it feels like to design & run experiments squarely inside your blindspot and how Ope applied her structured, methodical approach to this challenge. Angie references Mandisa's article “Escaping the Feedback Loop” (4 min read)34:39 “What she was actually afraid of didn't come true.” Mandisa and Ope reflect that investing more into management, allowed for more autonomy and creativity from the team and cultivated a culture of learning that Ope deeply craved for Kibo.To learn more about how Talentism works with leaders like Ope, visit www.talentism.com

Phil Carroll and Kevin Hornsby welcome Tim Blake, CEO of Hydrogen Future Industries plc (AQSE: HFI), a pioneering force in the green hydrogen production sector. Over the past year, HFI has marked significant milestones, from enhancing its intellectual property with international patents acquisition in October 2022, to groundbreaking prototype testing of its advanced aerodynamic wind turbine in Montana, USA. These tests have not only validated the turbine's efficiency and noise reduction capabilities but also forecasted a substantial increase in energy production. In parallel, HFI's collaboration with Tower Green Holdings Limited in January 2023 underscores their commitment to establishing hydrogen hubs in England, further solidifying their role in the hydrogen economy. Technological advancements continued with the development of an electrolyser prototype in California, achieving exceptional efficiency rates up to 97%, a testament to their dedication to innovation and sustainability. HFI is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape with its wind-based hydrogen production system. They are also joined by Metals One CEO Jonathan Owen, as the company aims to significantly advance its Black Schist Ni-Zn-Cu-Co Project in Finland by increasing geological confidence and volumes through infill and step-out drilling, especially targeting the R1 and P5 areas. Utilizing its innovative prospectivity model, the company intends to rapidly identify and secure new targets across the Kainuu Schist Belt to enhance its portfolio of critical minerals. This strategy is underpinned by recent drilling successes and aims to leverage advanced exploration technologies to de-risk and expedite the discovery of mineralized black schists. The company's ambition is to define a substantial 200 Mt resource in the Paltamo area, positioning itself as a key supplier of critical minerals to the European market. This endeavor not only seeks to meet the increasing demand for critical minerals at a low production cost but also aligns with environmental sustainability through the use of bio heap leaching extraction methods. The future holds the potential for Metals One to either directly take these resources into production, enter into joint ventures, or sell to existing operators, thereby contributing significantly to Europe's critical mineral supply chain at reduced economic and environmental costs. https://youtu.be/sEM5BlVw6oo Disclaimer & Declaration of Interest The information, investment views, and recommendations in this podcast are provided for general information purposes only. The retail industry is unique in its architecture. You have layers such as B2B and B2C. The B2C and FMCG industries have always had unique architecture, with their needs for the POS being the most important. The role of ERP was limited to just financial reporting. The order management layer always consisted of the OMS in a combination of WMS and TMS, with the POS forming the fabric for inventory, allocation, and fulfillment. Now with the needs of eCommerce, things are a bit challenging as the architecture needs to change. So how is Kibo changing that?In today's episode, we invited Mark Wright from Kibo Commerce, one of the hottest vendors in the microservices-based OMS solution. We discussed the strengths and weaknesses of Kibo along with its target market. Phil Carroll and Kevin Hornsby talk to Allan about CIZ1b. Primary lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Early detection is crucial, as surgical resection of early-stage tumors is the only curative therapy currently available. Lung cancers detected at stage 1 have a better outcome than those diagnosed later. Screening programs using chest X-ray or low-dose computed tomography can identify the disease at an early stage, but the costs of screening, including the high number of false positives, make stand-alone imaging strategies difficult to justify. A blood-based biomarker, CIZ1b, has shown promise in detecting early-stage lung cancer. Shaun Day makes an appearance and talks about the recent Scallyway results and his time in London. As usual, there is a weekly round-up of the movers and shakers and a look at the biggest news stories of the past week. What it's like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Your host Tony Fletcher documented his own experiences climbing to the Roof of Africa, as narrated in real time, alongside interviews with fellow climbers and guides, and on-the-mountain 'field' recordings; these were then combined with detailed historical and contextual studio narrative to form a four-part documentary with which One Step Beyond was originally launched. On this special episode, those four parts are edited together for the first time, their repetitive introductions and credits eliminated, and presented as one lengthy but complete documentary that you will hopefully find educational, entertaining, informative and, who knows, maybe inspirational. Here's what I wrote back at the launch:In August 2019, I set off from Kingston, New York, with four friends and a Tanzanian-born guide, to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. At 19,341 ft, or 5895 meters above sea level, Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa, and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. About 50,000 people a year attempt the summit; not all of them make it. The intense demands on the body in ever-thinning air cause many people to give up before they can reach the peak.I'm a writer and broadcaster by trade, so I brought my recording devices along with me for the journey up the mountain. Over the course of this mini-series, it's my hope that you'll be able to experience a little bit of what it's like to go on an adventure like this, and that by the time we are all done, you'll be ready to embark on one of your own.The starting time for each episode is given in the summary below. Feel free to pause and come back. And if you want to join us on a trip some time, make contact: details at the bottom of the show notes! EPISODE 1 (3:30): Meeting, planning, getting to know each other - Tony, Tim, Gwen, Steve and Marie, plus tour guide Protus - and heading out from Arusha to Mawenzi and the base of Kili itself.EPISODE 2 (33:30): Phallic trees, a first sighting of Kibo, an encounter with the Spice Girls, and a serious attack of altitude sickness.EPISODE 3 (1:01:30): Shrinking glaciers, blistering winds, sudden snow, and a two-hour nap at extreme elevation before an attempt on the Kilimanjaro summit.EPISODE 4 (1:30:10): Our team wrestles with a seemingly endless overnight slog up the side of a volcano, serious attacks of altitude sickness, and a long and desperate slog on the last stretch to the roof of Africa.
