The Conference's partner IKEA hosted a talk during Wednesday's Getting Grounded session focusing on IKEA most recent findings on play, design and why it all matters more than we think. Why is play important? And why is IKEA so obsessed with playfulness? Anna Granath and Maria Törn are ready to answer those questions, freshly armed with insight from IKEA's recent children's play report. Simplicity, Inclusivity, and Playfulness. Those three words guide IKEA's design philosophy. Play is seen as the ticket to learn better, to improve psychological safety, and subconsciously acquire maths, physics, and social skills. But the clearest answer is the one we hear from children. It's fun to play. We get to imagine. It makes us happy.Adult concerns affect children's play. Global worries about the pandemic, war, climate, and economy have created stress for children. And play is not fun anymore. Struggles with money, space, and even playful capacity, mean that not all children have the same kind of play. Reassuringly, the best cure is play itself. IKEA's report reveals that families are prioritising play and spending more time playing together.“There's a little bit of a play revolution out there”What can we do? Embrace the diversity of play, from imagination to exploring outside, playing sport and being creative. Adopt play as a mindset. Imbue everyday situations with the possibility of playfulness. So, maybe we should all be obsessed with playfulness and for good reason.
National Rifle Association of America v. Maria T. Vullo, argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on March 18, 2024 From the Petition for a Writ of Certiorari: Bantam Books v. Sullivan held that a state commission with no formal regulatory power violated the First Amendment when it “deliberately set out to achieve the suppression of publications” through “informal sanctions,” including the “threat of invoking legal sanctions and other means of coercion, persuasion, and intimidation.” Respondent here, wielding enormous regulatory power as the head of New York's Department of Financial Services (“DFS”), applied similar pressure tactics—including backchannel threats, ominous guidance letters, and selective enforcement of regulatory infractions—to induce banks and insurance companies to avoid doing business with Petitioner, a gun rights advocacy group. Respondent targeted Petitioner explicitly based on its Second Amendment advocacy, which DFS's official regulatory guidance deemed a “reputational risk” to any financial institution serving the NRA. The Second Circuit held such conduct permissible as a matter of law, reasoning that “this age of enhanced corporate social responsibility” justifies regulatory concern about “general backlash” against a customer's political speech. Question Presented: Does the First Amendment allow a government regulator to threaten regulated entities with adverse regulatory actions if they do business with a controversial speaker, as a consequence of (a) the government's own hostility to the speaker's viewpoint or (b) a perceived "general backlash" against the speaker's advocacy?
Maria T. from Brooklyn, NY, shares on today's Daily Reflection entitled "Helping Others". HELPING OTHERSOur very lives, as ex-problem drinkers, depend upon our constant thought of others and how we may help meet their needs.— ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 20Self-centeredness was my problem. All my life people had been doing things for me and I not only expected it, but I was ungrateful and resentful they didn't do more. Why should I help others, when they were supposed to help me? If others had troubles, didn't they deserve them? I was filled with self-pity, anger and resentment. Then I learned that by helping others, with no thought of return, I could overcome this obsession with selfishness, and if I understood humility, I would know peace and serenity. No longer do I need to drink.
How I made peace with my garden (Romanian) Author: Maria Balabaș, 2021 I started with a recording made in the garden with our little boy. We were getting ready to go to Bucharest, so we planted a few more things and we said goodbye. “The garden looks like our life: the things are mixed, have their own calendars, there are no 3 rows alike” (Vlad). It is a continuum. While listening to the recording, I made peace with this space filled with different plants, some eatable, others not. Even if this garden asks for more time and soul than I am ready to give, it has a huge contribution not only to our daily food, but to our imaginary. I dedicate this composition to Vlad, my husband, and to Bogdan, our son (both “words creators”!), and to our garden for the delicious things it gave to our stomachs and ears. Maria Balabaș Producer's note: Maria Balabaș moved to the countryside a few years ago, though she has the heart of a city person. "Măr din măr" translates as “apple from the apple tree,” but it also recalls the use of metonymy in the folkloric Romanian songs. Sound piece commissioned by SEMI SILENT in the frame of the 2021 edition of SONIC FUTURE RESIDENCIES. Maria Balabaș is a journalist and musician. She is the host of the Dimineața crossover show (Morning Crossover) from Radio România Cultural and has created projects devoted to new forms of radio creation (Generația sonoră/Sound Generation). In 2014 she was nominated for Prix Europa (Berlin) for the documentary Maria Tănase – Urban Soundtrack for a Diva. She initiated musical groups such as Avant'n'Gard and Soare Staniol, inspired by improvisational techniques, electronic music, acoustic music. Creates installations generated by the artistic interest in the form of field-specific auditory memory. Recording, editing, and mixing by Maria Balabaș for SEMI SILENT.

Mitä hyvää siinä on? In this episode, Hall welcomes Dr. Maria T. Millan, President and CEO of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). CIRM is California's stem cell agency. Its mission is to accelerate stem cell treatments to patients with unmet medical needs by funding promising research in California. California's Stem Cell Agency was created in 2004 when 59% of California voters approved Proposition 71: the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. That initiative created the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to fund stem cell research in the state. In addition to creating the agency, Prop 71 created a 29-member governing Board composed of researchers, business leaders, and patient advocates. CIRM realized that if the goal was to generate new therapies, the first steps would need to be getting scientists into stem cell research, giving them space to work and ensuring that young people were entering the field. That’s why the first awards were dedicated to training young scientists, building new facilities, and pulling California researchers into stem cell science. The agency has also funded research and new facilities and has trained high school, undergraduate, and graduate students for careers in stem cell science. Some therapies that may come out of CIRM-funded research projects involve transplanting the cells themselves. Others will be drugs that were discovered through modeling diseases in a petri dish. Still, others will be diagnostics that allow doctors to diagnose and treat diseases more effectively—or through technologies that open up whole new fields of research. CIRM funding promotes all areas of stem cell research that show promise to accelerating treatments to patients in need. Dr. Maria Millan is a physician-scientist who has devoted her career to treating and developing innovative solutions for children and adults with debilitating and life-threatening conditions. After receiving her undergraduate degree from Duke University where she first entered the arena of immunology research, she returned to her home in New Jersey where she obtained her M.D. and then went on to complete her surgical training and post-doctoral research in Boston at Harvard Medical School – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. After a transplant surgery fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine, she began her academic career with a busy pediatric and adult transplant surgery practice focused on technical advancements and optimization of patient outcomes, including the treatment of rare fatal diseases. Please to read her full bio. Dr. Millan tells Hall what excites her in the field of stem cell biology. She advises investors and startups and explains how she sees the industry evolving. She also shares information regarding stem cell research and COVID-19. You can visit CIRM at , and via their LinkedIn page at . Dr. Millan can be contacted via LinkedIn at , and via email at .

Bra deal!
We're getting sentimental this week with the first episode of a mother-daughter series as Kayden teaches her own mum about Queen, Archduchess, Empress, and all-around badass Maria Theresa. This lady knows what she wants and isn't afraid to (at least try to) take it — sometimes even while she's pregnant. This is series will include a second episode on Maria T and two episodes on her slightly (spoiler alert) more famous daughter Marie Antoinette.Thank you to all of the fans and patrons of the show.

Någon gång för länge sedan kläckte den gamla anarkisten Emma Goldman ur sig ”if I can’t dance to it, it’s not my revolution”. Men hur tänkte hon egentligen?
