St. Petersburg in my eyes is the most spectacular city on our planet. The Winter Palace, the Hermitage, Catherine Palace, and Peterhof in St. Petersburg define imperial affluence. If I were to see only one city in the entire world, it would be St. Petersburg. Venice of the North. With their magnificent museums and palaces, large and lush gardens, Paris, London, Rome, and Madrid have been the most popular destinations for discerning tourists. And then there are other great European cities like Venice, Milan, Lisbon, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Prague, and Vienna, most with meticulously planned public spaces, some with delightful waterfronts and aesthetic bridges, and almost all with towering churches, spacious plazas, and famous statues and monuments that are architectural masterpieces. Major parts of these beautiful cities have grown organically over centuries. Now imagine a brand-new city planned and developed from scratch and combining some of the best features of the famous older European cities. That was the dream of Tsar Peter the Great. He wanted the best of European art and architecture in one place, his place. So 300 years ago, in the year 1703, he specially commissioned some of the greatest architects of Europe to build for him the city of his dreams. They did exactly what he had in mind and thus was born St. Petersburg. It is simply unmatched in its beauty. If you have been here before, you would want to come back again and again. St. Petersburg is the nation's cultural capital, rich and diverse in its offerings. It has an astounding number of public facilities—221 museums, 2,000 libraries, more than 80 theaters, and 100 concert organizations. It is home to the Hermitage, one of the greatest art museums in the world, on par with the celebrated Louvre in Paris. Also located here is the world-famous Kirov Dance Company (now Mariinsky), the greatest center of music and ballet and historically, home of brilliant dancers like Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Mikhail Baryshnikov who are admired throughout the world. Among the innumerable tourist attractions here, the biggest appeal is for the former imperial residences like Peterhof with its majestic fountain cascades and paradise-like parks, and Tsarskoe Selo which has the impeccable Catherine Palace of stunning baroque design.

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2022 16:56

But outside the scene is somber. A ballerina’s body lies face down in the snow, blood splattered like rose petals over the costume of the Swan Queen. The crowd is silenced by a single cry— “Nemetseva is dead!” Amongst the theatergoers is Lady Emily, accompanying her dashing husband Colin in Russia on assignment from the Crown. But it soon becomes clear that Colin isn’t the only one with work to do. When the dead ballerina’s aristocratic lover comes begging for justice, Emily must apply her own set of skills to discover the rising star’s murderer. Her investigation takes her on a dance across the stage of Tsarist Russia, from the opulence of the Winter Palace, to the modest flats of ex-ballerinas and the locked attics of political radicals. A mysterious dancer in white follows closely behind, making waves through St. Petersburg with her surprise performances and trail of red scarves. Is it the sweet Katenka, Nemetseva’s childhood friend and favorite rival? The ghost of the murdered étoile herself? Or, something even more sinister?

For the label’s fifth opera, Gergiev conducts Donizetti’s masterpiece with a magnificent cast led by Natalie Dessay. Donizetti’s tragic opera in three acts depicts a family feud set in the Lammermuir hills of Scotland. The opera was premiered on 26 September 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, with the coloratura soprano Fanny Tacchinardi Persiani, and a revised version in French followed suit in 1839. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the central character of Lucia Ashton (Dessay) is in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, her brother Enrico’s sworn enemy. With his fortune waning, Lord Enrico plots to force Lucia to marry Lord Arturo Bucklaw, in order to guarantee his continued power. Torn between her family and true love, Lucia submits to her brother’s desires but in turn loses her mind. Lucia’s delicate disposition is tested and results in the famous ‘mad scene’ where Lucia kills her new bridegroom Arturo. Natalie Dessay is one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos and an admired interpreter of lyric heroines. She is particularly renowned for her interpretation of the role of Lucia, which she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and the Mariinsky Theatre. Future engagements include Verdi’s La Traviata with the LSO at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July and at the Wiener Staatsoper in October. Piotr Beczala is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of today’s leading lyric tenors. He has recently sung Edgardo with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and on tour in Japan, and this summer will perform at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Salzburg Festival. Valery Gergiev recently won the Disc of the Year Award from BBC Music Magazine for his LSO Live recording of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. In July, Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Ballet at New York Metropolitan Opera and in August he conducts at the Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms with the Mariinsky Orchestra before opening the LSO’s 2011-12 concert season. In October he embarks on a major tour of the USA and Canada with the Mariinsky Orchestra, including residencies at Carnegie Hall and Berkeley. Forthcoming releases include the final instalment in his Mahler cycle on LSO Live featuring Symphony No 9 and the Mariinsky label’s first DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs. Natalie Dessay appears courtesy of Virgin Classics.
