In this episode you discover the origin and true original meaning of “Good enough for government work” You also learn how the meaning changed completely during ensuing years from it's first use in the early 1900s.—-Host:Stephen Carter. Email contact: CarterMethod@gmail.com. —-Sources:From A History of the Canadian Parliament (the phrase's first appearance is in Parliamentary records on June 8th, 1906) and The Project of War: American Culture During World War 2.Source: " https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/9lt9hi/good_enough_for_government_work_when_did_the/—-Origin of close-enough-for-government-work- "Government work" is also a term for the manufacture of something on company time for personal use. For example, a custom trailer hitch made at a welding shop for the welder himself on the afternoon shift with no supervisors around is government work. Commonly heard in Ontario, Canada and northeast U.S.From Wiktionary- Originated in World War II. When something was "good enough for Government work" it meant it could pass the most rigorous of standards. Over the years it took on an ironic meaning that is now the primary sense, referring to poorly executed work.—-Good enough for government work and close enough for government work are both American idioms to describe something that is merely adequate, something that meets the bare minimum standards, something that is subpar. The expressions good enough for government work and close enough for government work have a surprising origin. Around the turn of the century, the terms were used to mean something of high quality or something that was the best of the best. This definition of good enough for government work and close enough for government work may have persisted through World War II, though some believe this is the time when the meaning of the expressions began to change. By the 1960s and 1970s, good enough for government work and close enough for government work came to mean the exact opposite of their original definitions.Source: https://grammarist.com/idiom/good-enough-for-government-work-and-close-enough-for-government-work/#more-34113—-Technical information:Recorded and initial edits using Audacity. Discover and apply new research about the power of mindfulness to mitigate the experience of feeling cold. —In a recent study, researchers investigated if listening to a mindful paragraph being read could improve a person's motor performance and cold tolerance in a low-temperature environment. The participants were exposed to cold by submerging their hand in 2°C, or about 36 degrees Fahrenheit, cold water while listening to a mindfulness passage read aloud. The control group was not given the reading. After the training, researchers put each person from each group to the test to see how well they could withstand cold exposure. In the motor task tests, both groups fared similarly. However, members of the mindfulness group were able to tolerate cold exposure for considerably longer than the other participants. How can you and I put these findings to use? First, you're not likely to read a mindful based paragraph before going out into cold weather. But what you can do is use a simple affirmation such as, “I choose to maintain Present Moment Awareness during the period I'm out and about in this cold weather.”This simple affirmation sets your intention to maintain Mindful Present Moment Awareness. And, in do so, you're not likely to notice the cold or, if you do, you won't engage in negative self-talk complaining about the cold. That type of self-talk is a story. When there's no story about how uncomfortable the cold feels, you'll proceed with whatever you need to do in greater comfort.More information about the study: Kaitlin Mugford et al, The effects of mindfulness and repeated cold exposure on cold tolerance and motor skill performance, International Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics (2021). In Matthew 5, Verses 15-16, we're told:"Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven."Key Points:- God wants us to ambassadors for righteousness while we are here on earth. Your behavior serves as an example for others.- And make no mistake, if you proclaim yourself as a Christian to friends and family members, know those who are nonbelievers or weak in their faith are watching you. If you proclaim yourself to be a Christian and fail to behave accordingly, you give comfort to those who are quick to judge, and in that judging whatever faith they may have had will be weakened.- When you live an exemplary life in accordance with God's Word, you are a light in this world, a beacon for others who look up to you as a model of Christian living. - This doesn't mean you must be perfect. But I suggest to you it does mean affirming your intention every morning to live each moment of that day in a way that is pleasing to God. In so doing, you become an ambassador for God and a model for everyone you know and have contact with. - When you act as an ambassador for God, you let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven."To listen to previous episodes of "Bible Verses for Better Living" visit: https://www.spreaker.com/show/bible-verses-for-better-living.---Host:Stephen Carter, CEO, Stress Solutions, LLC.
