Intuition tells us right from wrong. It lets us know when we are doing something that isn't in alignment with who we want to be or our values, and vice versa. It's that “hunch” we get when we are sure or unsure of something.  Yet, many of us fail to use our intuition, especially since the pandemic caught us all a bit by surprise; The unexpected happened. Yet, this doesn't mean our gut instinct is always wrong. What is an Intuitive Person? Philosopher and writer Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, “Intuition is the whisper of the soul.” Intuition unearths our innate and deep desires. It forces us to align with them or face discomfort due to resistance and chaos. Is it Possible to Develop Intuition? Yes, it is! With practice and some introspection, you can flex your intuition muscle. Everyone has intuition; just not all of us use it regularly! With that in mind, try the following 10 ways to develop your intuition. 1. Keep a Dream Journal. Okay, so dreams don't always mean something. But recurring dreams or patterns can indicate ideas or thoughts deep in our subconscious, which, when uncovered, can help us understand ourselves better and where we are in our current life trajectory.  2. Meditate. Yes, this is recommended for basically everything from reducing anxiety to controlling your mind and emotions.   3. Practice Using All of Your Senses. By paying closer attention to all five senses, including taste, smell, sight, hearing, and touch, we can actually go a layer deeper and get in touch with our sixth sense (aka your intuition!).

Are you about to lose?.... Your SENSES? SENSES create genre hopping evocative soundscapes, with arena ready hooks forming a compelling sound - Harder Now is one piece of a magnificent debut album. Equally influenced by shoegaze romanticism, alternative experimentation, and indie ambition, they have been making music and gigging around the UK since they formed whilst at school in Coventry, bonding over a love of diverse, underground music. A certain chemistry was apparent from the outset, and they have remained a solid unit despite now being located in Coventry, London and Germany. With the long-awaited release of their debut LP (Vinyl, CD and Digital) ‘Little Pictures Without Sound,' they are set to reach their largest audience yet. With uplifting anthems beside more emotive and introspective songs, connected by mysterious snippets of spoken word, the album takes on a cinematic quality, finding beauty in everyday life. It is a triumphant statement from a band ready for their moment in the spotlight after a long journey.

If you choose to read anything in the description or listen to the audio in this episode, you agree to take full, complete, and sole responsibility for your own wellbeing.---How to Do the "Lose Your Mind" technique:- Sit up in good posture, hands in lap or on resting on chair arms, keep your head erect, close your eyes and bring attention to your breathing. - Attend to the in and out of your breathing for about 30 seconds and then scan your body slowly from the top of your head to your feet and notice any areas of tension. - Release any tension you notice and again do a head to feet scan. When you don't detect any tension, - Open your eyes and look around your physical location. You'll be engaging your sense of sight. Allow your attention to fall on one physical object. Really look at that object as if seeing it for the first time and then out loud say what the object is. For example: a book, a pen, a computer, etc.Repeat this same process four more times.- Next, you'll engage your sense of touch. Look around your environment and select one object. Physically touch that object and feel it in hand. Move your fingers and thumb on the object and really attend to the felt sense of the object. Repeat this action three more times.- Next, you'll engage your sense of hearing. Close your eyes and listen to the sounds in your environment. If you're in a room, you'll notice there is a faint sound in the room. In audio recording, we call that room tone. Isolate one sound and simply notice it for about 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat two more times. - Next, you'll engage your sense of small. Bring attention to your sense of smell, your olfactory sense. Isolate one aroma and bring attention to that aromatic experience for about 10 seconds. Repeat one additional time. - Next, you'll engage your sense of taste, your gustatory sense.Bring attention to your tongue and notice there is likely already a faint sense of taste present. It may be the residue of something your drank, something your ate earlier, or something you can't quite identify, but you know it's there. Stay with that sense of taste for about 10 to 15 seconds.- Next, if your eyes are closed open your eyes and take a final look around your environment. Stretch, yawn, and sigh. Notice how calm and relaxed your feel. Notice your mind is quiet. It's now time to return to whatever activity you choose to pursue with a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.---What is Gestalt Therapy? From Wikipedia: "Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy which emphasizes personal responsibility and focuses on the individual's experience in the present moment, the therapist–client relationship, the environmental and social contexts of a person's life, and the self-regulating adjustments people make as a result of their overall situation. This is episode #14 of the podcast and it's Thursday, the 24th of March, 2022. My guest today is professor Charles Spence, a world-famous experimental psychologist with a specialization in neuroscience-inspired multisensory design. He has worked with many of the world's largest companies across the globe since establishing the Crossmodal Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Department of Experimental Psychology, Oxford University in 1997. Prof. Spence has published over 1,000 academic articles and edited or authored, 15 books (a sample is provided in the Notes). His work focuses on the design of enhanced multisensory food and drink experiences, through collaborations with chefs, baristas, mixologists, chocolatiers, perfumiers, and the food and beverage, and flavour and fragrance industries. Prof. Spence has worked extensively in the world of multisensory experiential wine and coffee and has also worked extensively on the question of how technology will transform our dining/drinking experiences in the future. We started the discussion addressing how many senses do humans have, after which we jumped right into important questions related to sense harmony, sensory overload, sense congruency, dominance, and harmony. The second part of the discussion moved toward technology (as I usually like to do), brainstorming about how can we use the senses to provide the best immersive experience in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality. Here is the show.Show Notes:- How many senses do humans have and use- Sensory dominance: Are vision and hearing our most important and most complex senses?- Looking at sensory combinations- How do senses interact?- How much do we know about individual differences in somatosensory stimulation and perception?- Considering cross-modal brain plasticity- The role of technology (i.e., AI / AR / VR) in shaping our awareness and use of the senses- Ethical implicationsNote:Links to some of Dr. Spence's more recent (and popular) books:1) Spence, Charles. 2017. Did you know that just changing the light and music can alter how you perceive a wine by up to 20%? Ever wondered why that bottle of holiday rosé was such a crushing disappointment when you got it home?  High-tempo music can make a dish taste more spicy - lower-pitch sounds bring out bitterness in wine. (Though, 'we can't turn water into wine musically...yet.') Rubbing velvet versus sandpaper can change how you perceive a wine's body. Even the microbiome in our gut and mouth can affect our perception of a wine. Welcome to the curious world of Professor Charles Spence - experimental psychologist and one of the world's foremost experts in multisensory perception. He follows on from what the Italian Futurists pioneered in the 1930s (and they, according to Spence, 'recommended turning up to dinner parties in pyjamas made from satin, silk, velvet and sandpaper, and eating the food without cutlery by burying your face in the plate while rubbing your neighbour's jim-jams...') This is the first in a series of programmes we'll be doing on wine and food. Before we launch into the delicious nitty-gritty, we wanted to understand the world of taste and flavour in more depth. So here we dive into the world of smell, sound, touch, sight, taste, atmosphere, glassware, bottles, genetics - and the future. In the mix are hyper-directional speakers and sound showers, 'spit-in-bag' dinners, parosmia, artificial reality and drinking liquid gold. What Spence finds 'intriguing' are, 'those potentially transformative or magical experiences that you might get by combining wine with food or music.' This is our kind of science - and this fascinating episode serves as the perfect launch-pad to leap into the delicious world of food and wine. Bon appetit!More details, photos and links are on our website: The Magic of Taste Science with Charles Spence show notesHere are the links to Charles' books: Gastrophysics: The New Science of EatingSense-hacking: How to Use the Power of Your Senses for Happier, Healthier LivingPS: this episode also features the brilliant winners of our Bordeaux wine giveaway, thanks to everyone for entering, and thanks to the Bordeaux Wine Council for DOUBLING our prizes in recognition of the quality and quantity of entries. Thomas Anderson, a Swedish entrepreneur, change manager, author, speaker, and coach, joins us on a Life and a Living Podcast to help us create our own space and learn the steps to take to help ourselves in times of struggle. We are constantly connected to the digital world and at risk of high levels of burnout. How can we equip ourselves with the tools needed to avoid that burnout and what can we do as leaders to guide our teams to do the same? Thomas helps us to understand the process he went through including his realization of needed change, learning to say no, and communicating effectively with loved ones. Because of his journey, Thomas has now shifted into helping organizations and individuals with the steps to reclaiming their lives. He helps people and companies in their transformation journeys. He has extensive experience from global companies as a project manager, change manager, and management consultant. He has always been close to the change process as his main work has been managing digital transformation, being the bridge between IT and the business, which affects people in many ways. In 2015 he was successful in his career and lived with his family in a nice house—he had all that you “ought to” have. But there was something missing in life, he was trapped in an emotional prison of self-doubt, stress, anxiety, and feelings of worthlessness. He didn't know how to be there for himself, and he was on the brink of burnout. That was a starting point and over three years he completely turned his life around, a journey which he now shares in his book, The Vulnerable Man.  To reach Thomas, go to his website: https://thomasanderson.se/eng/ Links and Resources: Thomas Anderson Web Page   The Vulnerable Man: Break Your Patterns. Could plants and nature sounds make you happier at work? What kind of scent should you wear on your first date? Can a simple hug make grandma and grandpa healthier? Charles Spence, sensory science and experiential psychology expert, tells us how our senses alter how we feel and think, in his groundbreaking book, Sensehacking. He describes how hacking our senses and stimulating them in nature, at home, at work, and at play makes our lives richer. Greg and Charles talk about how the impact of our senses affect our minds and bodies, thoughts and feelings.Episode Quotes:In your opinion, do you think sensory therapy will be an occupation where we will be able to engineer a sensory environment that is optimized?[00:17:28] That is perceptual engineering to optimize stimulation. Perhaps matching it to the kinds of environments that we have evolved in. And that might involve bringing in greenery, water, the sounds of the birds and the animals. This was one of the amazing things that popped out of the book. Researchers have studied indoor temperatures— homes in North America, from Alaska to Texas. From the warmest to the coldest states, they find that everyone seems to set their central heating and air conditioning at 23 degrees centigrade. And, at a humidity level, that, if you compare that to the climate in every region on earth—it turns out it provides the closest match for the Ethiopian Highlands where we evolved. How older people in care homes are experiencing sensory underload because of Covid-19[00:25:12] On the one hand, now there's an increase in touch hunger because people can't touch anymore. Care home residents in the UK said they could occasionally see their relatives through the glass. And they can speak to them through the Intercom, but they're not allowed to touch in person for fear of transmitting the disease. And these are heartbreaking stories of these elderly individuals saying, 'All I want to do is just give my family a hug.' What clearer message could you have about the benefits of touching? The increasing hunger that we're faced with.Thoughts about hospitals in integrating and optimizing the sensory experience for patients[00:39:38] So, the health care provision was a realization that needs to go beyond just the machines or, what they can do, the doctors and surgeons. Actually think about, delivering, designing environments that are conducive to recovery, to the reduction of stress. That can be everything from the scent. I mean, just think about, when you go to the dentist, and you get the smell of eugenol or the cloves or the smell of filling. For most of us, that can make us pretty tense. That's not an intrinsic stressful smell. It's just when we associate that smell with what's going to happen, the pain and the drilling. I think it's probably the same thing for hospitals, that scent maybe makes them feel stressed.Time Code Guide:00:01:57: How and when Charles wrote the book00:04:50: How Charles convinced Oxford's Psychology department to allow him to take on a generalist approach rather than to focus on a specialization00:07:08: Sensory congruence and how senses work together00:10:09: Is there a divergent point between sense hacking for good and sense hacking for profit00:13:07: Sensory overload, underload and its use in therapy00:15:30: Why older people are suffering sensory underload during COVID-1900:17:28: Engineering environment to optimize the sensory experience00:19:35: Biophilic designs and trend on British offices00:20:20: Evolutionary psychology00:22:32: Sensory congruence in biophilic design00:24:10: COVID-19's effect on the variety of environments we're exposed to and our relationships, and interactions00:26:50: How Charles used the book in designing his home00:30:26: Open office design, workplace setup and its effects on employee performance00:31:22: How offices and employees will be like after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted00:34:42: Do architects need to relearn integrating sensory experience in their designs00:43:00: Rise of online dating and the radical impact of visuals on other senses related to building relationships 00:45:00: The things we lost from the lack of sensory stimulation during COVID-19Show LinksGuest ProfileCharles Spence Profile at the University of Oxford's Experimental Psychology DepartmentCharles Spence Academic ProfileCharles Spence on LinkedInHis WorkCharles Spence on Google ScholarSensehacking: How to Use the Power of Your Senses for Happier, Healthier LivingCrossmodal Attention Applied: Lessons for and from Driving (Elements in Perception)Gastrophysics: The New Science of EatingThe Perfect Meal: The Multisensory Science of Food and DiningIn touch with the future: The sense of touch from cognitive neuroscience to virtual reality

Show Notes: Last week we talked about the mouth and the nose.  Now for part 2 of "Why Taking Care of Your Senses is Vital to Feeling Young" let’s move on to eyes. Our eyes can get really tired in today’s world. So let’s talk about some Eye Care Practices. Let’s do it together, unless youre driving. 1. The first one is called Figure 8’s: Roll your eyes in figure 8’s for 10 slow easy breaths. This simple therapy increases the flexibility of your extra-ocular muscles. Smile and relax while you do your eye exercises which releases tension in your eyes. Don’t over do it. If you feel strain in your eyes at all, back off. 2. The next one is called Palming: Rub your hands together to generate heat. Place your right fingers on top of your left fingers. Gently place your hands over your eyes, applying no pressure. Relax for 10-15 breaths to release unnecessary tension from your body. Notice the darkness and the light pressure. You are giving your eyes a little break. You are now pulsating between lightness and darkness. Notice if your body starts to relax. You might yawn and feel a deeper relaxation. Now let go of your hands and simply notice if your body is more relaxed. 3. Next, we are going to Zoom Out: This exercise is recommended especially for individuals who suffer from computer vision syndrome, but it can also help relax the eyes after any other strenuous activity. Choose an object that is located six to ten meters away from you, and focus on it for about twenty seconds, without moving your head. Doing so provides rest to the ciliary muscles that we tend to put a lot of stress on when we focus intensely on the computer screen. 4. Now we are going to Zoom in: This simple (and somewhat hilarious) exercise can be performed by holding a pencil in front of you at arm’s length, then slowly moving the arm closer to the nose, while focusing your eyes on the tip of the pencil. The goal is to bring the tip of pencil as close to the nose as possible, until your eyes can’t keep focus. Doing this exercise ten times in a row helps improve eye movement control and strengthens the eye muscles. 5. Next is Repeated blinking: This simple action, that we often take for granted, plays a vital role in eye health and vision — it replenishes the tear film that covers the surface of the eye (the cornea), lubricating it and protecting it against dryness, dust particles and other irritants. Some research shows that when we watch TV or use the computer, we tend to blink less, which dries and irritates the eyes, potentially causing headaches and other types of discomfort. Blinking every three or four seconds for about a minute is thought to help reduce eye strain by clearing the cornea and allowing the eyes to rest. 6. Finally we are going to Look At The Horizon: We are going to look outside, so if you are inside you may want to stand by a window. You are going to look as far as your eyes can see. What do you see on the horizon? You may be able to see the mountains miles away or you may only be able to see the building across the street and the sky. If that’s the case, look at where the building meets the sky. You may be able to look up and see the clouds which are also miles and miles away. Allow your eyes to zone out or space out. It’s really important to look at nature like mountains, the sky, clouds. We want to take in elements straight from the elements. As you do this, release your eyeball into the back of the eye socket, just as you did with Palming. It should feel relaxed, not strained or bugged out. So we just did a few minutes of eye practices, we did not spend a huge amount of time on them. If you’re someone who uses the computer a lot, pulsate your work on the computer with spacing out and looking at the horizon. Set a buzzer for an hour when you’re working or every 20 minutes and just stand up from your desk, walk to a window, and look at the horizon. There is another eye therapy that you can do at home using eye goggles and organic ghee. Melt the ghee to body temperature, fill your goggles with the ghee, lay down with your head on a towel, and open your eyes. This is a great therapy that lets your eyes relax backward, it’s great for anyone with dry eyes, it’s very nourishing and amazing to experience. You can do it as often as you want. Don’t do it if you’ve had eye surgery. You can also do this practice at an Ayurvedic clinic or spa using a dough dam called Netra Basti therapy. It’s placed over the eye and ghee is poured into it. It is usually done after another therapy like a massage or a full body steam. The goggles version is like a home version of this. Let’s move on to the ears now. There is a simple therapy of putting warm sesame oil into the ears. Put an old towel under the head. It’s an amazing therapy at the seasonal junctures. The ears are ether. They are extremely light. This is a very deeply nourishing therapy for the ears. It’s more of a water earth therapy, so it’s very grounding; it decreases sensitivity throughout the entire NS. It is a very subtle and sublime therapy. You can also do it by putting a few drops of oil on your fingertips as you do your self-massage. Then put your fingertips into the ears and do a few little circles with your fingers. It opens up the cervical lymphatics. You’ll be able to oil your ears in a faster way. If you have kids, do this practice every month. Have them lay there for 3 minutes, then flip over and do the other side. Make sure you have an old towel under their head. We already covered Skin, or touch, in the habit of self-massage in Episode #83 because it’s such a big habit. Doing each of the other sense organ care practices doesn’t take you much time at all, except in the very beginning when you are learning how to do them. Doing tongue scraping is only going to take you 10 seconds, neti pot is only going to take a minute, putting a few drops of oil in your ears is only going to take you a few seconds, eye care practices is only going to take a minute or two. Pick out what you want to do now. Which one can you do now easiest? Which one can you start incorporating into your day now? Remember that your little habits are always triggered by something else like brushing your teeth or sitting down at your computer. So write down right now which one of these microhabits of sense organ care are the most important to you and which ones you can start doing right now this month. DiVecchio has made media headlines such as Good Morning America, The New York Post, Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness for helping his client win the largest weight loss prop bet to date of $1.2 million dollars. This professional poker player shed seventy pounds after his high stakes poker buddies bet him $1.2 million to get from 33% body to below 10% body fat in six months. Chris has also been featured on KTLA Morning News to talk about his book The 5x2 Method Revealing the Power of Your Senses.    Chris DiVecchio brings an innovative approach to health and fitness with a unique blend of self-development transformation training. With over 20 years of experience, DiVecchio has trained everyone from athletes to models to people just trying to find time to fit in a workout. The majority of his clientele consists of high-level executives who have spent their lives building their wealth and success at the expense of their health and wellness and are now truly dedicated to balancing both.     As a fitness trainer and lifestyle specialist, Chris understands the importance of maintaining that balance which is why his programs are custom-designed to integrate into each individual’s lifestyle.  For many, it can often feel like an interruption.  DiVecchio believes that fitness and lifestyle do not need to live separately which is why he works intently with each client to customize a program that brings these two worlds together seamlessly and with sustainability. Between work, marriage, kids and social activities, it’s easy for people to get lost and wake up one day wondering what happened? When did I stop caring about my health? DiVecchio’s philosophy of 1 v.s. 23 suggests that the 1 hour a day you workout is important but it’s the choices you make with the other 23 hours of your day that have a much greater impact on the quality of your overall health and happiness. He uses a three-fold approach that focuses on nutrition, training and vitamin supplementation to target what he calls preventative health & wellness.  The key component of his program is accountability coaching. He takes the time to properly educate each client while honing their skills with time management and stress management to show just how easy it is to eliminate the excuses and get results.

He lives in England. Favorite Success Quote “If the brain was so simple that we could understand it, we’d be so simple that we couldn’t”~ Ian Stewart Key Points 1. Your Brain is Wired to Fight, Flight, and Fu….Find a Mate When you seek to understand your brain, you have to realize that it takes our brains nearly 30,000 years to evolve, and for the past 30,000 years of evolutionary history, our brains have been wired for three things, fighting, fleeing, and finding a mate. Whenever you are presented with a new situation, your brain will filter it through these lenses, basically, should I fight this thing, run from it, or screw it. Whenever you are in a new and scary business, life, or mating situation, your brain is not logical and you are working with wiring that evolved to help you survive on the plains of the Savanna, realize this and you will be able to perform at a much higher level. 2. It is Emotion That Makes Every Decision People who think they have a real choice in making decisions, do not understand how the brain works. Your brain operates purely out of emotion, and on its simplest terms it operates to move your towards pleasure and away from pain. If you can understand this, you can manipulate this to associate more pain and pleasure with certain things that will help you move away form what you want and towards what you do, even if it means loss of pleasure in the short term. 3. Use All of Your Senses to Get in State If you want to get into state, simply use all of your senses. Get in a room that inspires your sense of sight with colors that motivate you and images that fire you up, light a candle or something else that smells good and relaxes you and helps you think, stand on a certain type of floor that will help you to feel either more relaxed or more motivated, and finally put on some music that gets you into state. 4. Break the Script If you want to break a habit, break the script. If you are a smoker, figure out when it is that you normally smoke and change something about that routine. Change the coffee that you are drinking, the way you drive to work, the gas station that you fill up at or anything else that will help you to change a routine normally associated with a habit. 5. Always be Learning Plain and simple, if you are not learning, you are dying. You need to constantly expand your brain and expose it to new and exciting ideas to be growing into the man that you want to be. Always be learning.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Peter Jackson has been thinking about and working in Middle Earth since 1995 and finally, at the close of 2014 the defining chapter is here. From it's beginnings as  two films and a companion piece, all the way to a trilogy of Hobbit films, the process has been anything but smooth. Finally the two trilogies are now complete and so ends the adventures in Jackson's Middle Earth. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined once again by Alice Baker and Megan Calcote from Educating Geeks as well as Norman Lao to talk though this final Hobbit film. We discuss everything from the 48fps, to the different battles to the themes, even getting a little personal in the analysis.
