Five years of discussing what Montreal Sauce actually is? The steak sauce still remains a mystery, but we do have an inspiring chat with Alexis from Stump Kitchen. Our multitalented friend shares her story with us and her compassion with everyone around her. Have a listen to learn more about pronouncing Worcester sauce, STUMP CAM, challenging your palette and flammable soda pop. How do you pronounce tamari? This episode is no different than others, Chris scares the guest with his internet research of her. We talk of past guest Taryn, who thinks wooden bears are creepy. Alex grabs delicious ingredients from Earth’s General Store or even Superstore. Chris makes the Stump Kitchen pad thai recipe. Alexis left her full-time gig to do Stump Kitchen and now relies on her Patreon page. We dare you to watch an episode and not give to it. :) Gluten intolerance? Our guest believes that gluten wrecks her because she worked at Cobs for years and stuffed herself with bread. Huffing donuts from Take 5. So, chickpea chocolate chip cookies are a thing? Tasty, vegan gluten free brownies via Stump Kitchen. In the battle of energy balls, here is Alexis’ entry. Where is yours, Chris? Time to make a video, sir. The Edmonton yummy that is Padmanadi. Paul says, “When you need milk, tennis shoes, and a tire iron, shop Meijer.” Alexis loves the rad knives at Knifewear. Over-joyed that we had the opportunity to not only speak to Alexis, but meet her as well. Alexis’ spirit and conviction is contagious as it radiates from her. Take 3 minutes to watch one of her episodes on Youtube or Stump Kitchen and you’ll see it yourself. Find Stump Kitchen on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and feel free to support Alexis to keep making fabulous shows by contributing to her Patreon. You can also find us on all those sites as well. On April 1st, Men Edmonton put on a special event screening the movie The Mask You Live In by the Representation Project. Through this movie Men Edmonton invited a panel of different men with different viewpoints, including old guest David Shepherd, to talk about masculinity in an open manner. The panel was hosted by 630CHED’s Ryan Jesperson, and the event was kicked off by Councillor and friend of the show, Scott McKeen. I was so happy that Men Edmonton did this, and received quite well too. More than 400 people attended the free event, and I got a chance to talk to some of them before the movie, to hear what brought them to watch a movie about masculinity, after the movie to hear what they liked and didn't like, and their own perspectives on masculinity. I also got a chance to talk some of the presenters. In this episode, you will hear past guest Matt Souch, Jason Garcia, Scott McKeen , also The Ferdinand contributor Micheal Cameron, and a special appearance by Montreal Sauce host Chris Sikkenga.
This week's podcast features the audio from our meetup on how to start a podcast, which we recorded way back in September. This was a departure from our usual format. We had veteran podcasters on one side of the room and aspiring podcasters on the other, and we invited the rookies to pepper the vets with questions. You'll hear questions such as these: Which sound editing program should I use? What would you do differently if you started again, especially for business? How frequently should podcasts come out? What social media channels should you use? What analytics should you track? How do you make crowdfunding work? How do you record guests remotely on your podcast when they may not be technically savvy? Where's the best place for your podcast live, for hosting and distribution? And you'll hear answers from these podcasters: Ben Yendall of Tales from the Hydian Way; Erika Ensign of Verity!, The Audio Guide to Babylon 5, Lazy Doctor Who and Uncanny Magazine; Chris Sikkenga of Montreal Sauce; Dan and Trina Shessel of Northern Nerdcast; Danica LeBlanc of Yegs and Bacon; Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs; Steven Schapansky of Radio Free Skaro, Hockey Feels, Lazy Doctor Who, The Memory Cheats and Uncanny Magazine. Have a listen. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Many thanks to CafeRista for hosting us. Thanks, too, to CKUA Radio and the University of Alberta Music program for donating door prizes to give away. Audio from the October meetup on how to get the word out (featuring Kelly Froese of Edmonton Nerd List and Jeff Williams of Guerrilla Radio) is slated to be published in December. As you can see, there tends to be a lag between meetup and audio release, so if you can, join us in real life. The next one will be on Nov. 19 at Variant Edition. Watch for details on the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup page. This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you make your podcast sound great. In this episode, you'll hear Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky talk about how they got into podcasting and how they use the expertise they've earned over the past decade to help bring other podcasts into the world (including this one).
In which we celebrate our 100th episode for what is almost definitely the first time. The alcohol flows freely on this week's celebratory 100th episode, in with Danica and Brandon welcome special guest Chris Sikkenga (of Montreal Sauce and Film Frown) to the show! Chris (the scamp) chose the final episode of Series 1 to watch - The Parting of Ways - and the gang gets well and truly sauced and forgets to talk about the plot for much of the hour. Get ready for some McConaughey and try some of Jackie Tyler's Space Jerky as we all talk about Daleks being stage divas, sex in the undernet, and Trevor. Also: Danica throws hands at T-Swift. All this, and a lot more! Outro music is "I Really Like You" by Carly Rae Jepsen.
This week's podcast features the audio from our meetup on how to get good sound, featuring multimedia photojournalist Ryan Jackson of Full Circle Visuals and podcaster and video editor Chris Sikkenga. We gathered at Variant Edition Comics and Culture in June to learn more about why sound is so important, how to control the room to improve the conditions for recording, how to work the microphone to avoid common errors, how to monitor your sound along the way, and what, if anything, you can do after the fact to fix it up if you mess up. The irony is not lost on me that the sound for this is not pristine, as it was recorded on a snowball mic on a table in a room with a lot of hard surfaces. And it occurred to me after re-listening to the recording that I still haven't mastered their advice for good microphone technique. It's not terrible, but there's room for improvement. Do as they say, not as I do. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Be sure to follow Full Circle Visuals on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. And please listen to, subscribe to and rate Chris's podcasts, Montreal Sauce and Film Frown. Thanks again to Variant Edition for technical assistance, the room and a door prize; to NeWest Press for another door prize; and to CafeRista for delicious treats. Our next meetup will be held at CafeRista (14213 103 Ave.) on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 pm. Save the date, and watch for details on the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup page. Here is some of the gear that Chris brought along for show and tell: Behringer XENYX 802 eight-channel compact audio mixer Rolls Pro switchable microphone mute/talk switch Shure SM58-LC vocal microphone Pyle Pro PHA40 four-channel stereo headphone amplifier Zoom H4nSP four-channel handy recorder A lot of that is next-level stuff. If you're just looking for gear to get started, previous podcast meetup guest Justin Jackson recommends this setup: Microphone: Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Pop filter: "Find one that will work with your mic. This one is a good start." Headphones: Sennheiser HD 202 II Editing software: Garage Band (for Mac) and Audacity (for PC) This week’s Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Podcast Canvas, a tool to help businesses and organizations that want to start a podcast figure out who to reach, what to say, and how to make it happen. On this episode the gents talk about preserving memories, archiving, data and private interests. The guests are graduate students from The Centre for Digital Media, Paul Juricic and Carolyn Fung. For the sake of your sanity in the following notes, “Paul” is our guest. “Host Paul” is your Trill podcast host, not a symbiont. Previously on Montreal Sauce…Carolyn has been on before so she updates us on the project she was involved in before, True North. Paul tells us about the previous team he worked with Altru.City. Carolyn is now working with NGX Interactive. Paul tells us about Archinodes and the graduate project, Project ACME. Archinodes design lab was started by Paul Juricic, Mél Hogan and Jeff Traynor. The graduate project was a prototype built on an an earlier idea, Arc. Paul said they explored various services like Delicious and Pocket. Dig Paul’s ride. Carolyn and the team played with physical objects to get an idea of how people handle things before building their interface. Is Evernote useful or just a “dumping ground?” Permissions and sharing were interesting challenges. For example, Apps like Slack want to make your entire workflow easily accessible. However, Google Drive wants you to use their service, so Slack had to come up with a workaround to get your Google Docs into their app. The prototype app the team worked on is for analyzing and exploring your data, not making content. Paul says it’s similar to Hootsuite, which is a tool to manage your other social media accounts. Chris shares his new fascination indiewebcamp, which is about syndicating your data to other services and keeping control of it. Really fascinating conversation with Paul and Carolyn about telling stories about the past versus controlling data. The next episode will be part 2 of the live chat and we’ll continue the conversation about the various methods organizations use to archive information. Be sure to check out Carolyn’s Twitter account or stalk Paul on LinkedIn. If you want to follow the production of the show, check out our blog on Patreon. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
This is our first Sauce Packet, a short show on a single topic. The inaugural topic is “that album that always finds its way into your playlist.” What is a Shadoe Stevens? Sorry Film Frown fans, Traxx is just bad, not so bad it is good. Who was the announcer in the $10,000 Pyramid? Paul’s pick, “The album that they handed out in the streets of the suburbs,” Green Day’s Dookie. Chris married his music to his wife’s in Subsonic. He loves it, she misses her free singles from Starbucks on iTunes. Chris’ pick, New Radicals - Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too. Pick two from the Paul, pandering to the Canadian listeners, Barenaked Ladies - Rock Spectacle. Chris drops a cover album as his second pick, If I Were a Carpenter. The grunge bands of the 90s sing Carpenter hits. Chris’ oldies favorite is the Greatest Hits from Blood, Sweat & Tears Paul enjoys singing the Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel to his girls. Thus, it is his final pick. Thanks for listening! Friend us on Facebook, Twitter or Patreon and subscribe in your podcatcher app, iTunes or Google Play. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
We go deep into programming languages and their history with our guest Tierney Coren. There’s a sprinkling of tech recommendations, some Rooster Teeth and a discussion on the popularity of Let’s Play videos. Chris asks the tough question, “What is Node.js?” Learn more about javascript with Douglas Crockford. Syntax can make things difficult when it comes to languages. Paul says jQuery really helped in the case of popularizing Javascript. Tierney discusses Gulp.js and Electron, web kits for Node. Our guest is using a Razer mouse and headset. He found this gear thanks to the company sponsoring his favorite content producer, Rooster Teeth. Chris uses a Logitech Performance Mouse MX. He wore one out in 3-4 years, but bought another because he couldn’t find the rad gaming mice that people really enjoy. Our younger guest uses his iPhone 6+ for all his media viewing rather than a TV or computer. Paul’s testing out an iPad Pro, maybe it’s an all-in-one solution? Paul likes Sleep++ to monitor his sleep. Tierney uses CodeHub to connect to Github on his phone. The many text editors in Tierney’s life, Brackets, Atom and Visual Studio Code. Flavors of linux discussed, Elementary OS, ubuntu, kubuntu, CrunchBang and Arch. Chris like this windows manager for Linux, OpenBox. We discuss the popularity of Let’s Plays. Pewdiepie has built an empire by just making Let’s Play videos. Tierney asks that you please visit the Node.js Github and join the community. Everyone is welcome. Chris thanks Tunabelly software for giving him a copy of Temperature Gauge Pro to test on his Mac. Guess what? It works great and is making his computer less noisy during the podcast! Thanks to Arturo and Brandon for joining us in the chat channel. Special thanks to Tierney for joining us at the last minute! Of course, thank you for listening to the show. This episode features discussions of cities in New York that aren’t New York City, succeeding in university and it turns out there are people who love candy corn. No. Really! Our guest Tierney Coren is part of the Node.js Evangelism Work Group, a web developer, designer, writer and student. The glorious reputation of Utica. Tierney teaches us that the origin point of the grid system in Salt Lake is the Mormon Temple. Chris has been using Here.com to replace Google Maps. Tierney & Paul have issues using Duck Duck Go for search. However, Paul does love the !bangs. Chris defends DDG, but shares an option given to him on the Cupcake.io community, Startpage.com. Tierney is doing an accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s program at SUNY Poly. We previously did a show with a professor of information design, part 1 & part 2. Let’s talk about our dark future with 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. More books? How about Snow Crash, Ready Player One, Wuthering Heights & The Prince. Tierney thinks previous guest Arturo could be the protagonist from Snow Crash. Paul & guest review the Twilight Saga films. Tierney’s instructor is obsessed with TiddlyWiki, so he’s learned a lot about it. Let’s Encrypt is in beta. Tierney teaches Chris about Coursera. SuperCard Suite wants to be your HyperCard replacement. Tierney was using ghost for his site. He tried Jekyll and Hexo. He settled on Metalsmith, a static site generator. Paul says the Montreal Sauce & Film Frown sites are also created with a static site generator, PieCrust. The setup is documented on his blog, A Podcaster is Me. Chris mentions that he’s going to take a stab at joining the IndieWebCamp movement with a new site using Known. He was inspired by Jeena.net and our chat with Jen Montes, part 1, part 2. A really great way to connect with Webmentions is to use brid.gy. Thanks for listening to the episode & thanks to &! (@bitandbang), Tierney, for chatting on the Sauce. In the cozy warmth of their homes in December, the boyz team up with Daniel J. Hogan of Clattertron.com to throw a house party. Err, that is to watch House Party. I was just Kid’n Playing with you. Want to risk watching it? Amazon Video iTunes All else fails? Try canistream.it. Bullworth is a “rap’ movie? Paul wants this soundtrack on The Last Dragon. Dan has recently enjoyed Straight Outta Compton, bought the N.W.A. album with the same title and wants this soundtrack, yo. Hip Hop Family Tree is a suggested comic you should read. Chris & Dan cannot recommend Cool As Ice enough. They are totally down with Vanilla Ice. The late, great Robin Harris is “Pops” in this film. Wait, are we watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure? Paul & Chris are getting matching sweaters like Kid’n Play from the Gittin’ Funky video. Chris has a Youtube playlist of more old hip hop tracks he had the cassettes or singles of, click at your own risk. The film’s villains are the group Full Force. They have great professional names, way better than the character names in the movie. Oh look! A very young Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Martin from that TV show Martin(1992). Dan says we need to add Reagan’s Bedtime for Bonzo to next season’s Film Frown. How different would this movie be if it was written by Tennessee Williams? Pops wants to watch Dolemite, the forefather of bad movies. Don’t break your nose doing this dance move. Here’s a how-to. Oh hey! It’s Lou B. Washington from UHF. Red dyes are evil! Why does that cop look familiar? Barry Diamond The graphic sex scene is disturbing in a different way than the one in A Boy and His Dog. George Clinton is the DJ at the elephant graveyard party. Who is the better actor, Christopher “Kid” Reid or Christopher “Play” Martin? Daryl Mitchell from Galaxy Quest was part of a rap duo? Another great performer in this film is John Witherspoon, from Friday, The Boondocks and Black Jesus. There is no drug use, no smoking, the one guy drinking is made fun of and absolutely no hanky panky without birth control. This movie is actually pretty responsible. That explains why Kid’N Play had a cartoon as well. Oh no, Dan remembers the awful that is Hammer Man. Magic shoes? That’s not 2 legit. At your next cocktail party, be sure to challenge someone to a dance off. Everyone loves the scene where Robin Harris is talking to the police (NSFW). Dan teaches us what CPT means. What’s the deal with those burglars in the film? It’s the producer and director. The most amazing voice of Fats Williams gives advice about not getting raped in prison. Dan thinks this is a good movie, but no From Justin to Kelly. Meanwhile, Chris kept thinking he was watching Class Act. Dan plugs the Capital City Film Festival as he was volunteering for them. Thanks to Dan for joining the show! He’s 2 Hype. Be sure to peep his web comic, Clattertron. Thanks for rolling with us and listening. Please check out our other podcast, Montreal Sauce and enjoy doing the Kid’N Play kick step this week. Support Film Frown on Patreon
It’s part deux with Taryn Arnold from Patreon! As the conversation continues from the last show they discuss educational videos, the art of interviewing, Ace of Base, Tamagotchi, and bad accents. Paul works with the creator of Graphtreon, a tool to track the progress of creators on Patreon. Taryn says it is a fav around the office. Taryn loves so many things on Patreon. She mentions Crash Course, In a Nutshell, and How To Adult shows. We review Taryn’s test Patreon page. California is great! Well, except for the Earthquakes. Taryn is not a fan of those. San Andreas is real, yo! Montreal Sauce is no This American Life, but we do enjoy a good story. I like juice, the progenitor podcast. Chris asks a loaded question, “Please tell me you are playing Neko Atsume?” Now you miss your Tamagotchi, don’t you? Time to do a reno? You need Holmes on Homes. QUIZ TIME! Let’s learn about Sweden! The Swedish Chef makes poutine in Montreal. It’s The Final Countdown so take a Joyride because It’s All That She Wants. Godzilla rocks with Green Day. Remix! Lingonberry is your jam. Taryn thinks Chris sounds like Goofy in the first part. This episode he’s doing Wreck-it Ralph. Flavor Flav! Thanks so much to Taryn Arnold for chatting and laughing with us! Thank you for listening. Two words, Kevin Kostner. Now you know why we’ve watched this film. Armin Mortazavi, one of the awesome people we met during the Montreal Sauce podcast live from CDM graciously joined us to experience Waterworld. Where can you watch it? (Or, avoid it?) Buy the Blu-Ray Or stream it: iTunes Amazon Here’s our notes, although be warned, they got wet and were hard to transcribe: Water is expensive. In 1995, this was the most expensive movie to date until Titanic was made two years later. Batman Forever made more money than this film at the box office. Yet, Waterworld finished above great films like Braveheart and Outbreak. There’s a live Waterworld show at Universal Studios theme park? According to Wikipedia it was award winning and ran for 10 years. This film is bold in its world-building, but cartoonish like a USA Up All Night movie, something like Hell Comes To Frogtown. Armin drops science on us. Why not convert sea water to drinking water instead of urine? Who does Kostner think he is, Chris Hadfield? Chris calls the film Von Dutch Punk. There’s lots of lipstick in the dystopian future for Jeanne Tripplehorn. Michael Jeter speaks his own strange language in this film, much like in The Green Mile. Is it recycling or Soylent Green? Dennis Hopper is our satirical villain and sort of fun. Baymax in Big Hero 6 has more dialogue than Kostner in this film. When Chris berates the little girl’s drawing, Arturo in the chatroom chimes in to ask, “How many opportunities does one get to draw on a Waterworld. Armin says Kostner is taking Tripplehorn to Futurama’s old New York. The guys are confused that people don’t remember dry land but do remember Captain Joseph Hazelwood. Kostner does the rear axle movie trick to an airplane? Paul wonders if Waterworld is the sequel to Zardoz. Armin’s review, “I don’t even know why I am watching this?” Chris says this is no Space Truckers which is not saying much. Lots of fun lore included on the imdb page and Wikipedia page for this film. Armin suggests that you watch Blade Runner instead of this film. If you see have seen Waterworld, Paul suggests that you watch Armageddon and pretend Michael Bay directed both. If you haven’t seen it, watch Splash instead. Chris suggests Damnation Alley for your post apocalyptic needs or The Incredible Mr. Limpet if you’re into fish-people. Thanks to Armin for joining the guys. Check out his “cartoon endeavors” at biasedcat.blogspot.ca. Hopefully, we can get Armin back if he wasn’t scared away by the Kostner film. This episode features Vincent Price, Frankie Avalon’s helmet hair and a very bad song from The Supremes. Thanks to guest reviewer Sally Ann for taking time out of her busy season to join us! Interested in watching the film? Peep it on Amazon. Watch on iTunes. On with the show! Frowner Sausages may remember Sally from a couple of Montreal Sauce shows, S2E013 and S2E014. (It’s not an insult, Montreal Sauce fans on Twitter chose the name Sausages, for themselves!) Sally shares movie memories from different genres, Platoon & Annie. Chris gets Casualties of War mixed up with Platoon. We all regret Oliver Stone, but love Willem Dafoe & Forest Whitaker. What are these beach party films? The awful theme song by The Supremes and the opening claymation credits by Gumby’s Art Clokey. That song is thankfully absent from an album in Chris’ collection, Spy Magazine Presents, Vol. 1: Spy Music. First cameo in the film is Killer Croc! Frankie Avalon plays Jack Tripper with his costar in backwards clothes like Kriss Kross. Before Gilligan and before Dr. Goldfoot, there was The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Chris drops some film terminology on ya, Mise en scène. If you’re not interested in the sequel Dr. Goldfoot & the Girl Bombs, perhaps you would like the TV show, The Wild Weird World of Dr. Goldfoot. WHAT? Some of the torture scenes were borrowed from other Vincent Price films, like Pit and the Pendulum. Sally & Chris agree that Michael Cera and Jessie Eisenberg are interchangeable. During the car chase, geography becomes surreal? Fans in Grand Rapids, MI probably feel the same way about the car chase in 30 Minutes or Less. Chris compares the film to Gilligan’s Island & Beverly Hillbillies while Paul nails it, describing it as a very long episode of Get Smart. Sally recommends Palo Alto as “the complete opposite of this film” we watched. Paul is excited because The Wizard of Oz has been remastered and looks gorgeous. Chris says you should check out the star-studded comedy, Noises Off. Thanks to Sally for hanging out with us. Check out ShopSallyAnn.com for rad hand crafted designs and sallyannk.com for tutorials and more information. Support Film Frown on Patreon
Our guest on this show is a 3D generalist. That’s a fancy term meaning Christian can do it all: modeling, texturing, rendering, lighting, animation, FX, effects and whatever else they throw at him. On the show we chat about the harsh realities of working in 3D, a rebel 1968 Dodge Charger from Hazzard County and get lost in the math of rendering. Evernote would like to update during the show. Oh noes! What is this 3 on the tree Chris speaks of? Dig the pic. Reminiscing about Christian’s first computer, maybe this and the Avid hardware that looked something like this. Christian says if you’re passionate enough you should be able to learn 3D on your own, though he studied at the Savannah College of Art & Design, SCAD. 3D tools & platforms mentioned by Christian, Maya, Unity & Oculus Rift. The conversation turns to Life of Pi and the effects company that made it, Rhythm & Hues. There’s a free, short documentary called Life After Pi, telling the story about how that successful movie bankrupted and shut down the company. Another large 3D company, Digital Domain has had similar problems to Rhythm & Hues. Chris has used the free & open source 3D application, Blender. Paul remembers using POV-ray many years ago to code his own 3D Enterprise. TinkerCAD is a 3D application you can use in your browser. Amazon’s failed Fire phone with 3D? Christian has been listening to podcasts from Sam Altman on How to Start a Startup. Silicon Valley reference! Montreal Sauce hasn’t had one of those in a while. Thanks to Christian for sharing his story and teaching us about the world of 3D animation. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
Sean Connery in a red diaper? How could we say no to Zardoz, the 1974 film about guns & penises. We don’t need special effects, we have the power of pantomime! Joining Chris & Paul to review the film is musician Quoc-huy. Earliest movie memories for all 3 reviewers are Disney films. This of course, dates everyone since Chris & Quoc think back to 101 Dalmatians and Fox & the Hound, while Paul remembers The Little Mermaid. “The gun is good and the penis is evil.” Quoc says the film would be completely different had those items been reversed in that quote from the film. The fake god Zardoz dislikes the Breeders? You can’t believe the imagery we’ve described up to this point, right? Have a look at the trailer for Zardoz. Next year we’re submitting the giant stone head of Zardoz in Artprize. Sean Connery’s character is named Zed. Would that be Zee in American? (A lesson learned on the Montreal Sauce episode I Just Like Saying Dongle). Green bread? Is that Soylent Green? We compare the barn of apathetic people to the crazy village in Gymkata soon. Chris thinks David Lee Roth could make this film better. Projection & boobs apparently aren’t enough? Quoc breaks the dam and the Sean Connery impressions start. Sean Connery in a wedding dress is not as attractive as Grandma Ma, Larry Johnson. This episode is not brought to you by the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Projection and boobs get boring after a while. We want an A-Team montage. Guns good- FIRE BAD! Is the set from Return from Witch Mountain or Enter the Dragon? Zardoz and Friend have a not so Top Gun moment. Is Zed’s son the Beastmaster? Hollywood loves remakes. We decide to cast the modern remake. We don’t have recommendations for other films on this episode, because you should probably watch Zardoz. You can find Quoc rocking out or jamming acoustically in Grand Rapids’ pubs or you’re invited to his bass player’s basement to listen to rehearsal. Find Chris & Paul on twitter or back here for more episodes. Support Film Frown on Patreon
On this episode we watch the 1975 post apocalyptic buddy comedy about sexual assault, A Boy and His Dog. Artist, writer and comedian Daniel J. Hogan joins Paul and Chris to review this talking dog picture. Hogan’s Heroes references have been approved. Dolemite is a movie that is so bad it is good suggested by Chris. Dan suggests The Room because it fits in the genre of so bad it is good. He also suggests the Japanese horror film, House. Don Johnson is the star of A Boy and His Dog. Of course we all think he’s the dog. The director is L.Q. Jones, who typically played the sheriff in every TV show in the 80s. The upbeat music in this dark film was produced by the same actor that does the dog’s voice, Tim McIntire. What is the name of the character Don Johnson is playing, Vic or Albert? Paul thinks perhaps Michael Vick. The first show and we’re already talking about the Fleshlight. Oh nifty, you’ve stumbled onto a NSFW Wikipedia page. Perhaps Blood the dog is a precrime dog & Minority Report is a prequel to this film? Jason Robards plays the antagonist, an evil Committee member. Dan recommends you watch him in Once Upon a Time in the West. Does Don Johnson’s dream come true in the movie? No, instead they hook him up to a milking machine. This movie was only missing robots, oh wait. So many more references in the show, from The Brady Bunch & My Little Pony to Asimov’s Laws and the “contractually required mirror universe episode”. Enjoy the show. Catch Dan over at clattertron.com, danieljhogan.com and follow him on twitter, @danieljhogan. You can catch all 3 of them in this December 2013 episode of Montreal Sauce. Welcome to greatest adventure ever attempted by handsome, bearded men with audio equipment! Paul & Chris will torture, err invite guests to review B-movies, bad films and cult classics. This is an intro to get to know the guys, (if you’ve never heard them jabbering on Montreal Sauce) and the films that they will be sacrificing in the near future. Hey, what podcasts are we listening to? Paul digs on some TWiT and Chris just found Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast. How do you listen to podcasts? Chris uses Podcast Addict on Android and Paul is using Overcast. The first movie we’ll be giving the business to is A Boy and His Dog. Is this the scifi Lassie or Old Yeller? Movie two: Zardoz. Yikes, where do we start? Watch where you put that fun finger. Dr. Goldfoot & the Bikini Machine starring Vincent Price. “It seemed like a good idea?” That’s the tag line for The Thing With Two Heads and no doubt what we’ll be saying about this movie choice. Is Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter worthy of watching? More than one person has suggested Gymkata. Chris saw the trailer for Big Ass Spider and is very curious. Chris thinks we might have to do an episode where we watch the film together and record. Perhaps we could use Rabb.it? Send suggestions for films to the FilmFrown twitter account. And of course, follow that account to stay informed about live shows. Support Film Frown on Patreon

Colette suggests using this extension for math story problems for those students. Colette believes one of the things that often gets missed when teaching with technology is digital citizenship. Of course, we all agree that many adults could use that same lesson. Many schools are going one to one with devices, assigning students iPads or tablets from kindergarten on. Using tablets and iPads as shared devices, with multiple classes/students, is difficult because they are meant for individuals. Schools can secure Google tablets & with Google Apps Device Policy but added security becomes troublesome with younger students. Android tablets do have multiple users but backing up user apps & data is difficult and doesn’t work well at all. Chris talks about volunteering in the classroom, and Colette corrects him by inventing a great new word. Chris is voluntold to go to school and help. Chris and guest Colette slip into their old podcast, The Sexy Back Tour while discussing this summer’s travels. Chris went to many weddings this summer including one featured on national news because it was on ice. The hockey wedding (more pics if you are one of those wedding lovers) took place in Michigan, not Canada. WAIT. WHAT? During the road trip to multiple weddings Chris went to the ER. He was the lucky winner of Bell’s palsy. Also, Chris wants a summer home in Nelson, B.C. Paul shares theories on digital identities from Jeff Jarvis who can be found on This Week in Google podcast. Chris adds that he recently finished a book by Howard Rheingold called Net Smart: How to Thrive Online. We learned why “zee” replaced “zed” in America English thanks to masteraramil in the chatroom. We get into the metric system vs. the Imperial units. Fahrenheit vs. Celsius vs. Kelvin. Don’t forget about the Montreal Sauce tee available for a limited time! This episode we chat with Jacob Cook who puts the Montreal in Montreal Sauce as he was actually in the city at the time of the recording. Jacob is the handsome brain behind arkOS and CitizenWeb Project. We talk the importance of open source, crowd funding and Big Brother’s sneaky mistress, Big Data. Jacob occasionally uses Tor so obviously he’s under surveillance by the NSA. Jacob suggests an open source real-time communications alternative Talky.io, which is based on the open WebRTC. Google says Hangouts will only support Chrome. Chris grumbles while Jacob warns it is only the beginning. He cites Google dropping the open XMMP protocol which has affected Chris in Canada land. Jacob shares a review on his new Jolla phone. The other alternatives are BlackPhone or the Android ROM Replicant. We discuss the evolution of developers from Nick Burns computer nerd to savvy designers & entrepreneurs building user friendly software and apps. Ease of use trumps privacy concerns every time. Thus, Jacob is working hard to make hosting your own websites, cloud and data very easy with arkOS. DRM does not move us forward. Jacob asks why wouldn’t we want the freedom to read an e-book, listen to a song or watch a film on any device? Open source collaboration means the creation of software we can all use regardless of our system. Jacob vows to never sell out arkOS as he never wants to take power from the users. Chris imagines Jacob starring in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Jacob has a great page called Free the Cloud and Chris asks how Jacob argues against the opposition. We all agree, every success is due to hard work. Kids, work hard and some day you can meet David Hasselhoff and have success like Angie Harmon. Paul and Jacob talk about Jono Bacon’s The Art of Community and the importance of building a community around an open source project. Advice from Jacob & Paul: Less is more, do one thing well and don’t insult people’s intelligence. Be at one with your time traveling hipster. Jacob & Chris talk about a recent survey of arkOS users and the idea of an arkOS data center for folks who have a poor internet speeds or are crippled by Comcast or another evil ISP. Jacob says arkOS will now have a SyncThing plugin as an alternative to OwnCloud. Jacob & Chris contemplate raising more money for arkOS with potato salad. We’ll return next week with Part 2 of our Jacob Cook episode, and Burt Reynolds… mustache? Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
Montreal Sauce is not recommended by any number out of any other number of doctors. Paul and Chris discuss the previous episode with Justin Hall. Chris suggests the podcast, Supercharged by Adam Dachis and Len Peralta’s Geek a Week. Chris is using Podcast Addict on Android to catch podcasts, which he likes because it has Chromecast support. Paul has used Downcast and Castro on the iPhone for podcasts. Not released as of this recording, though, is his new favorite Overcast. Paul wants to be at podcast zero, like inbox zero. Thus, he shies away from the Nerdist network because they release new episodes daily! Paul is unsure about SoundCloud as he’s worried about losing the rights to his audio. (Though it seems he wouldn’t.) Chris empathizes, which is why he’s never posted his videos on Youtube. Chris is mad as a sleepy diabetic can be about filmmakers using Standard Definition instead of black & white to indicate something happened in the past. Recently, he witnessed this in The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Lego Movie gets Paul’s approval. Star Trek Into Darkness gets a Blu-Ray release. We giggle about Google’s Cardboard. Chris laments over Android Wear. He and Paul invent charging pants and redesign the classic Mickey Mouse watch into Disney’s Wolverine Watch. Remembering Chris’ kinetic (auto-winding) watch. Let’s talk Apple CarPlay vs. Android Auto. Paul and Chris share ideas about Raspberry Pi projects. Intel has a project board called Galileo. We grumble over Netflix’s catalog and interface. Paul wants to see The Aviator, The Big Lebowski and The Wolverine. Paul wants to buy .sexy URLs. So he can get too.sexy. Right Said Fred was recently on John Oliver’s show. Justin Hall joins the show to talk about sharing our lives on the web. Others may know Justin from his legendary site links.net, various publications he has worked for or The Nethernet. Justin currently produces thought provoking videos as “The Justin Hall Show” that you can find on Youtube. Better yet, you can stay up to date & contribute to his work via the awesome service Patreon. In true Montreal Sauce fashion, we jump into conversation and don’t get around to introducing Justin until 49 minutes into the show. Being an amazing guest, Justin interviews us just as much as we interview him. We all quickly agree that we have no idea if the 300 sequel Rise of an Empire is historically accurate, but Wikipedia is the way to find out. Justin encourages us to edit, not just lurk on the free encyclopedia. Chris pledges allegiance to After Effects comparing it to a tool rather than service or box of filters like Instagram. Similarly, this week Chris shares that the way we interact with our phones/tablets isn’t necessarily intuitive according to some. Justin prefers using Final Cut & Motion for developing The Justin Hall Show. We discuss the age of the camera phone and sharing on the Internet. While Chris wonders if some folks are sharing because they’re self-absorbed, Justin rightly points out that “authenticity cannot be measured.” Paul introduces pre-parent Paul’s thoughts on Internet sharing vs. parent Paul’s opinion. We discuss digital identity and “Internet fame” and briefly talk about “This is Phil Fish.” Paul talks games, Directional episode titled “E4” and twitch.tv, the video sharing site focused on gaming. We discuss promoting the podcast, creating brands, marketing on the web and the level of engagement of the brands online. Paul reminisces about the Grand Valley Summer Film Program. Justin talks about a recent read, When The Shooting Stops, The Cutting Begins. Chris suggest A Complete History of My Sexual Failures, a personal documentary that was an emotional roller coaster. We talk San Francisco, Google and Detroit. Plus the awesome power of communities. As Chris shares his joy for PMOG, Justin hopes to attend Montreal Sauce Con in 3 years. Justin’s goal is to premier his film about 20 years of web sharing at XOXO Festival & Conference in September. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
Tina (Twitter, Website) joins us again to talk Orphan Black. We all love Helena. Though, Orphan Black isn’t a BBC show, Chris still included it in his blog, Why You Should Be Watching Brit TV Shows. Tina does foley of the Montreal Sauce splat when we talk Ben Affleck in Daredevil. The only clip that shows the Affleck scene Chris shares is from Cinema Sins. What a lovely coincidence. Chris says he was unimpressed with Marvel’s wanna be anime style animated films. Marvel’s Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher and Iron Man: Rise of Technovore. Paul & Tina keep attempting to watch Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows. Chris has yet to catch up with OITNB, but Tina & Paul just finished the new season of Orange is the New Black. Torchwood continues to torture Chris who gets revenge by confusing Mekhi Phifer with Omar Epps. Paul sings the chorus of Rockwell’s jam, Somebody’s Watching Me. Looking for a calendar to share across devices without being spied on by Big Data? Chris is trying Baïkal. It’s free & open source. Arturo was in the live chat during the show so we volunteered him to host the show in his tropical paradise next winter. Pedestrian bridge to Canada? That’s some not safe for work ridiculousness from Frisky Dingo. Speaking of NSFW or just plain weird, Paul is part of Machete Squad. The Xtacles was a lackluster spinoff from Frisky Dingo. For good measure, try the new ant farm keyboard because “We can’t ever go back to Arizona!” OwnCloud is a real dog on the RPi, but Raspian seems to work well. We talk Amazon’s fantastic new FIRE PHONE! Flame on? The creepy Facebook app on your phone listens to you and your environment. Paul wants the Master Chief Collection, so he’s contemplating an Xbox One. The guys talk Kingdom of Loathing again. If you’re interested in joining Chris’ sad clan in the game, find him on twitter. Resuming our half-and-half episode format, it’s Season 2, Episode 6. Chris talks about a previous show with Jonah, where he learned about Tom Cruise’s middle tooth! Paul thinks Tom Cruise’s middle tooth could be the Silence. Chris recommends Teeth if you’re into… you know what, don’t watch this. Paul says his children are really enjoying the Hopscotch and Paper apps on the iPad. Spellbounders is a iPad game recommended by a listener in the chat room. Chris is using Privacy Badger, a plugin for browsers from the EFF that blocks ad trackers. Want to chat without cell service? Check out FireChat. ProtonMail boasts security and encryption for the average user. It’s an email service started by some CERN scientists. We talk iMessage difficulties. Chris uses FolderSync to sync his photos with OwnCloud. While Paul used ScannerPro to copy receipts to OwnCloud. Is NFC coming to Apple? Rumor! Chris admits he’s a closet reality show fan because he watches MasterChef. Paul’s watching The Wil Wheaton Project. Montreal Sauce has no sponsors, but they talk about all the commercials on television, OnDemand and product placement. From the chat room to Paul & Chris, the world thinks Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. went from bad to decent. Meanwhile, Paul is concerned with Samuel L. Jackson’s health. Paul & Chris explore the Montreal Sauce history of foley sounds made with the mouth. Paul talks an awesome Star Wars parody he did & Chris talks about a parody he made of a Maya Deren film. U.S. Olympic hockey did not bring home the gold and Paul thinks it is time to go back to the amateur competitors. It’s a great segue to a documentary about college sports called Schooled. Chris decided to try StarTrekonline.com and quickly became a Lieutenant. By quickly, he means after hours of downloads and updates. Helix is all about asking questions. Will they ever be answered or are we Lost? The fellows are let down by the fact that Agent Coulson is simply Agent Coulson in Disney’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Torchwood “Miracle Day” is season 4 of the Doctor Who spin off that both Chris & Paul missed. Forget analyzing shows using the characters from the original Star Trek. Chris is now going to use the characters from The Dukes of Hazzard. Paul hints that the Doctor Who creators may try to explain why we’ve seen the 12th Doctor’s face (the same actor) in a 10th Doctor episode and Torchwood. In this, the inaugural episode of Montreal Sauce, Chris and Paul discuss a variety of movies and TV shows, followed by a small fanboy-v-fanboy discussion of iOS and Android.
