Episode 199, cognitive dissonance, desiccated hags, a Trail of Tears and Ssehura Baartman — Almost two hundred episodes exploring a land rich with some of the earliest examples of human habitation. We need to assess what has happened — standing back a bit to view the scene from where we've arrived - 1853 in the main with a smattering of 1854. The amaXhosa had lost a great deal of land to the English Settlers, the Coloureds, Khoe and Boers, as well as the amaMfengu refugees who were allies of the colonists. The coloureds and Khoekhoe had then lost some of their land to the colonists post 8th Frontier War. Each epoch saw a tussle over the territory. AmaXhosa chiefs realised by the mid-Nineteenth century that they were fighting for survival. A semblance of joint understanding was starting to spread out from southern AFrica into the interior, but not in the sense of any co-ordinated response to a colonial threat. The vast majority of African chiefdoms facing expanding settler frontiers were still responding locally, their response fragmented because the vast majority of African chiefs still regarded each other as more dangerous enemies - so their joint response to this growing threat was haphazard. AS the first people's faced annhilation, what distinguished the amaXhosa in a kind of historical contradiction, is that they did not diminish the numbers after each pushback — their numbers actually increased. This is not what happened to the Khoe and San who were pushed off their land by the new arrivals, the Nguni, then the next arrivals, the Europeans. The First people's of south Africa almost disappeared from the landscape as they were defeated. Not so the amaXhosa. Last episode I spoke of the historical Doppler Effect, and how folks approach the past, and this episode it's Leon Festinger's Cognitive Dissonance theory. A simple example of this is that when people smoke, and they know smoking causes cancer, they are in a state of cognitive dissonance. The behaviour is smoking, and knowing it causes cancer is the cognitive dissonance bit when they continue to puff away. When Individuals form a group try to avoid disharmony by seeking consistency in beliefs. This is a central tenant to being human. However, it was this basic principle that was going to lead to the coming Cattle Killing extravaganza. Mlanjeni's prophecy continued — despite the fact that he had failed in his mission, he had not failed in his message. It is not a surprise therefore to hear that the next complex prophet in our tale of magic and mystery hailed from southern Transkei, and lived alongside the Gxara River which is just north of the Great Kei River Mouth. This is a place I know well, having regularly hiked from the Kei mouth Ferry along the beach to a nearby place called Qholora near the Ngogwane River in the mid-1980s. The riverine bush here is thick, mysterious, ancient and haunting. It seeps into your consciousness like the fingers of God, prodding your imagination, assailing your senses with sight and sound — and smell. The reason for spending time on the flora is because the next character to emerge in this saga who is going to alter South African history was a young Xhosa girl, Nongqawuse. It is these sights and sounds, this landscape that etched into her mind because it was from inside this landscape from bushes growing near her village, two strangers would appear in a bush and tell her that salvation for the Xhosa lay in killing all their cattle.

Navigating the different medication options for thyroid disease, like Hashimoto's, can be overwhelming, especially when you're not feeling well, and people don't always receive all the information that's out there. That's why this week, I'm clarifying the difference between synthetic and desiccated thyroids and the medications available. I cover: Levothyroxine, also known as Synthroid, and the benefits of synthetic hormones. Liothyronine, also known as Cytomel, how it works, when it helps the most, and potential risks. Desiccated Thyroid Hormones, or desiccated pig thyroid, how they work, and the potential benefits and problems. Remember, there is some trial and error to the process, so be sure to continue to test your levels and don't accept the first option you're given if it's not working for you. Losing her thyroid to cancer began Dr. Rebecca Warren's journey from deterioration to transformation. On this week's Thyroidless Life Podcast, she answers a listener question about desiccated pig thyroid. Unlike synthetic T4 medication, it contains both T4 and T3 hormones. For those unable to efficiently convert inactive T4 to active T3, desiccated thyroid may relieve lingering hypothyroid symptoms. However, getting the dosage right is key to avoid hyperthyroid side effects. Dr. Warren shares inspiring stories of clients who finally found relief by switching to natural desiccated thyroid and working with a doctor who listened. NEXT STEPS: - Ready to work with me? In this episode of Medical Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales, we have the pleasure of chatting with Marta, a behavior change facilitator who shared her journey battling hypothyroidism. The thyroid's primary purpose is to control the body's metabolic rate, which is the speedometer for energy conversion. If it goes haywire, it can affect the entire body system. We're talking about everything from sluggishness to skyrocketing energy levels. This is what exactly happened to Marta; she went through all the hallmark symptoms (breakouts, weight gain, renal change, depression, anxiety) of a person suffering from thyroid disease. While on desiccated thyroid medication, she learned through the discussion the importance of maintaining the correct medication dosage, eating healthy, and showing the body the TLC it deserves. Marta's incredible tale and insights will have you rethinking everything you thought you knew about thyroids. There's so much misinformation about thyroid conditions that it's enough to make your head spin! Understanding the ins and outs of thyroid treatment is crucial, so let's dive right in! Key Takeaways: (0:00) Episode Overview (0:37) Introduction to Marta, a behavior change facilitator. (1:54) The story of Marta's journey with thyroid disease. (3:51) Diagnosis of hypothyroidism, experiencing the hallmark symptoms, and initial treatment. (5:53) The ‘Spoonie Concept' for managing energy and the body's resources. (7:18) Suffering from depression due to declining health. (8:06) Initial benefits observed from the desiccated thyroid medication. (8:52) Coping with weight gain, fluid retention, and overall electrolyte management. (10:08) Desiccated thyroid for ten years, followed by a brain injury. (10:43) Marta's growing distrust in the medical industry and the Western medicine. (13:31) Overdosing the T3 resulting in dangerously low TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). (14:38) Marta's realization leading to her tapering off desiccated thyroid. (16:13) Dr. Christianson's anecdote about a patient who experienced hyperthyroidism. (18:56) Discussion on the correct dosage for desiccated thyroid. (20:01) Dr. Christianson's interpretation of Marta's dependency on desiccated thyroid: the cycle of feeling better and raising the dose until unbearable risks manifest. (22:38) The history of testing thyroid levels. (23:44) High mortality from heart disease among people on thyroid treatment around the 1930s to 1970s. (24:53) Marta's reintegration of certain types of foods following reading Dr. Christianson's book. (27:43) The pros and cons of both basic medication and overtreatment. (28:45) The body's need for a TSH. (30:40) Taking care of your body and eating well to regain function. (32:41) Successfully deprescribing and tapering from medication. (33:54) Discussion on the T3 and T4 levels while on medication and in a healthy state. (36:48) Misconceptions on the correlation of TSH and T3 levels. (39:27) T3 levels that are continuously high as risk factors for both breast cancer and diabetes. (39:48) Impact of elevated T3 levels on renal frequency. (41:36) Relationship between the thyroid hormones, medication, and body weight. (42:42) Discussion wrap-up (43:03) Closing statement Marta is not just your average person. She's a Spoonie, a mental health advocate, and a behavior change facilitator in employee wellness and healthcare. Marta sustained a traumatic brain injury years ago, leaving her with cognitive issues. During her recovery, she realized she was trapped in what the scientists refer to as the Intention Behavior Gap– the place between knowing what to do and actually taking action. Driven by a passion for discovering methods for bridging this gap, she embarked on a transformative journey involving the guidance of experts in the medical field. She proves that change doesn't have to be complicated or boring—it can be easy and FUN! When Marta isn't busy discussing behavior change, you might catch her doing something silly at the Second City's amateur improv classes and hunting down the best gelato in town! "...I had this really horrific negative experience and I still wasn't hearing them [the doctors]... and I had the same thing happen to me the following year. That's when it shook me...my mental health is more important than whatever other things I'm afraid of." Did you find this episode helpful? Let us know by leaving a review! At 43 years of age, Wende was feeling tired, gaining weight, had thinning hair, and was sick a lot of the time. She ate well and exercised but wasn't seeing a change in her body. After consulting a local endocrinologist, she was placed on synthetic thyroid medication that made her gain even more weight! She heard Dr. Hotze on the radio and decided to schedule an appointment. After bloodwork and a physical evaluation, it was advised that Wende switch from synthetic thyroid (T4) to desiccated thyroid (T3+T4). She could tell a big difference within a few weeks and felt 20 years younger within a month! Check out Wende's personal testimony and see what other hormone her body was lacking! Did you know that with the clever use of some over-the-counter supplements and one prescription medication you can re-create all of the benefits found in natural desiccated thyroid hormone formulas? Doing this allows you to make whatever thyroid medication you are using even more effective by mimicking what makes NDT so great. Why is this important? Because when Nature-throid and WP Thyroid were removed from the market, there were a ton of thyroid patients who started doing poorly when they were transitioned over. In addition, we have a ton of thyroid patients using levothyroxine who are still experiencing low thyroid symptoms. The tips and tricks I'm about to share assume that you are starting with a levothyroxine base but all of these tricks can be applied to any thyroid medication including NDT and T3 formulations. Step #1. Add a thyroid glandular. Using a thyroid glandular allows to benefit from the proteins, enzymes, and pro-hormones naturally found in NDT. Step #2. Add T2 thyroid hormone. NDT contains a small amount of T2 thyroid hormone which you can get in supplement form. Step #3. Add T3 thyroid hormone. NDT contains both T4 and T3 thyroid hormone which means you'll need to add T3 to your base of levothyroxine to mimic it. (Optional) Step #4. Add an iodine supplement. NDT contains about 130mcg of iodine per grain so if you are trying to re-create NDT you will want to take this iodine component into account. You can get thyroid glandulars and iodine here: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-glandular-plus/ You can get T2 here: https://www.restartmed.com/product/essential-t2/ T3 you will need to get from your doctor. Last week on the podcast we sat down with holistic health coach Molly McKenzie, who shared with us her experience being vegan and why she ultimately decided that it was no longer working for her body. Part of our discussion included changes she saw in her health once she added animal products back in, but what we didn't dive too deep into is why or how avoiding animal products affects the body in the first place. Are we getting all the right minerals and nutrients if we exclude animal products completely? Does our body need these foods to function properly? And what if you still want to be vegan but also want to make sure you're fully meeting your body's needs? In this health hotline, Liv goes SUPER in depth on this topic and breaks it down on a scientific level combined with patterns she's seen in her own nutritional therapy practice. This episode is for anyone who's wondering if/how animal products have a place in our diets and the best way to make sure your body is getting what it needs, regardless of what diet you may subscribe to. You may want to take notes for this one!! :) Mentions: Cymbiotika B12 supplement Zuma zinc supplement (DM Liv for discount code) Desiccated beef liver supplement Hair and tissue mineral analysis testing (recommended to work with a practitioner who runs these, DM Liv for connections) Intro & Outro Song: What Would You Do? The morning after December's horrific nighttime tornado smashed a huge Amazon warehouse in Illinois, killing six workers, corporate CEO Jeff Bezos issued a personal video message. Was he distressed and sorrowful? No, Boss Bezos was perversely giddy. That's because the narcissistic gabillionaire had not made the video to mourn the deaths, but instead had chosen this hour of tragedy to gloat to the world that his private space tourism business had just rocketed a small group of extremely rich thrill seekers on a 10-minute joy ride. The “Popular Information” newsletter reports that Bezos, dressed in a pretend astronaut costume, exclaimed that everyone involved was really “happy.” Back on Planet Earth, though, the families and co-workers of the employees crushed when Amazon's cheaply-built structure collapsed on them were not happy with him. It took Bezos some 12 hours after his self-congratulatory media event before he finally issued a perfunctory tweet professing to be “heartbroken over the loss of our teammates.” But they weren't “lost” – they were killed by a deliberate corporate culture that routinely cuts corners on worker safety to put more profit in corporate pockets. First, the building itself was thrown up quickly with cheap preassembled, 40-foot-high concrete walls that collapse inward in a tornado; second, Amazon's employees were expected to stay on the job that night even though there was a high risk of tornados; third, nearly all of the workers were classified as “contractors,” letting Amazon dodge liability for on-the-job harm. This is Jim Hightower saying… Oh, and Jeff might also want to reconsider one more bit of corporate arrogance he revealed in this ugly incident: Those dead workers were not his “teammates,” as he so cynically called them – even a high-flying captain doesn't treat teammates as throwaway units, carelessly sacrificing their lives for a few more dollars in corporate profit.
Desiccate is a verb that means to make dry. The Latin word siccus (SEE coos) means ‘dry.' Our word of the day evolved from this word and into its current meaning. When we describe something as desiccated, we describe it as having all moisture removed. ‘Desiccated' is often used as process performed on foods for the purposes of preservation. The shipment of desiccated coconuts arrived right on time this morning. Sadly the same couldn't be said of all our employees.
It's nearly Christmas, so it's time to find out what Desiccated Coconut and Grapefruit have to do with this special time of year. Trevor Marshall is preaching .
Thyroid “quarterbacks” the entire metabolism. It regulates and activates many body processes and is essential for energy and weight control. Borderline low or “hypothyroid” conditions are common, under-treated, and seven times more likely in women. Treatment is safe and should be general primary care rather than being stashed in a subspecialty. Judy is 40 years old: When I was 35, I started getting depressed and was chronically exhausted. I was losing my hair and felt cold all the time. I was constipated, grumpy, and had no interest in sex. I had to direct my kids from the couch because I didn't have the energy to chase them around. All my doctors insisted my tests were normal, and that I was a hypochondriac. They finally gave me pork thyroid. After a month, my energy went from a two to a nine out of ten, and I got my husband back.Treatment benefits: Thyroid supplementation for appropriate patients protects against heart disease, diabetes, and memory loss. It improves hair, nails, and skin. Balancing the thyroid improves menopause symptoms, and studies have shown lower death rates for treated people. When thyroid is low, people get fat, tired, inactive, disinterested in sex, and are more likely to develop heart disease. Erectile dysfunction is more frequent. Other symptoms include dry skin, hair loss, insomnia, brittle nails, constipation, bone and joint pain, poor concentration, trouble getting started in the morning, and cold extremities with cold intolerance. Untreated hypothyroid patients often have medical problems including depression and coronary artery disease. Vertebral fractures are more likely, especially over 50 years old. Hypertension, premature births, rheumatoid arthritis, and metabolic syndrome have all been linked to low thyroid conditions. Two kinds of bio-identical thyroid hormones are used for replacement, and both are vital for health. T3 has three iodine molecules and T4 has four. Desiccated pork thyroid has both types along with a few inconsequential pig thyroids. According to hormone doctors, it is the most bio-identical thyroid medication available. Physicians have used this inexpensive drug since the late 19th century. Endocrinologists and other mainstream doctors mainly prescribe pure T4 made in the lab, which was until 2004 a patented drug. T4 converts to T3 in the body, and they believe that this creates adequate T3. But it does not work well for everyone, especially women over 40. Since T3 is far more active than T4, people who cannot convert properly have poor results when they take only T4.For these patients, endocrinologists prefer to add synthetic T3 to the synthetic T4 instead of using the pork type, which contains both in one pill. When carefully dosed, these manufactured medications work fine, but they may not be as well absorbed as the other one. They are useful for people with a pig allergy and for Jewish or Muslim people who are not supposed to eat pigs.T3 is stronger and shorter-acting than T4, so patients sense its effects sooner than T4. Since getting patients to return for follow-up is sometimes difficult, using a drug containing T3 may help them understand the process is worthwhile. Since the thyroid's effects are long-lasting, the medication should be adjusted about once a month. Endocrinologists train for three years in internal medicine after four Support the show (https://paypal.me/dryohoauthor?locale.x=en_US)

Chapter Eighty-Fix - The Darkneff. It's 5.10pm on the 1st December 2020 and night has fallen. Richard braves the ghost-ridden field, which is too scary even for the Ftone Ftafi for his first dedicated night clear and the conditions are atrocious. The farmer has driven their tractor all over the path and the central part of the stocean is like quite slow quick sand, but more soily. Will our hero get out alive? And how do you see stones in the dark? And what becomes of the beets when they rot? Desiccated or slimy? Plus a beet joke to lighten the mood. It's terrifying, like a horror film. You'll love it. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral , I have leaned so much through your podcasts . Thank you . What are your thoughts on organ meats , specifically supplements like desiccated beef liver capsules, helping with histamine “intolerance”. Have your heard of this before? I guess the liver and kidneys have DAO? Thank you Lisa: Hi Dr. Cabral,I have a history of chronic bacterial and viral infections which manifests primarily as chronic UTIs and herpes infections, as well as digestive issues. I already eat a sugar free, gluten free Whole Foods diet and I work with a naturopathic doctor. Each time I get infection she is able to help me clear it using homeopathic remedies, herbs and silver. But after a month or two a new infection is back again. I feel like the missing link could be nutritional imbalances-such as vitamins and minerals that are missing from my diet. I am sensitive to supplements though so I use spirulina as my vitamin. I would like to get your thoughts on nutritional balancing to help chronic infections. Also what is your opinion of ozone and HBOC for this? Genia: Hi Dr. Cabral. I am a level one IHP student. I am loving the course and I’m already bringing my knowledge to the forefront. Thank you for your inspiration. My question is regarding flax seeds and flax oil in relation to women with history of cancer in their family and the carry the BRCA Gene and maintaining healthy breasts and body in general. There are different opinions about flax - and even though it seems really simple to obliterate flax out of the diet completely I would like to understand all the misconceptions out there and know the truth behind flax. Some authorities claim its hugely beneficial fir its Lignans and fiber and some say it increases estrogen which can be harmful. Thank you very much. With gratitude Genia Gabe: Hello, I was curious about weight gain. I know the majority of your podcasts are on weight loss; but, what about health and weight gain. I am currently under weight and looking for the best/ most healthy way to put on good weight (i.e. muscle not fat). I was hoping you could help! Thank you in advance! LAL: Hi, dr. Cabral :)Thank you for answering my previous questions, this helps so much!I’m wondering about GMO produce, what’s the difference between it and hybridisation? Are seedless fruits GMO? Which produce is usually GMO? How can we as consumers know which produce is GMO? Thank you & I wish the best start of autumn for you and your family :) Laura: Hey Dr Cabral! I always have a large glass of warm water, squeezed lime and pinch of sea salt when I wake up (learned it from you). I then have some GF organic porridge with some vanilla DNS mixed into it and wild blueberries. It's absolutely delicious but my question is: I add the berries in the beginning so it basically boils together with the oats and melts completely. Is this a bad idea? Am I still getting the antioxidants and fibre from it? Patrick: Hey dr Cabral I’m a huge fan and appreciate all that you do , my question is for my wife she’s had ms for about ten years now and is on to much medicine to even list but I’m sure you know what conventional medicine has her on, we have done some of your tests and she is working with Laura. by The time you read this she will be finishing the cbo protocol I wanted to know if she should just stay on the clean gut everyday since we don’t have the money to keep testing every few months or would it be better to just do the cbo protocol once a year. I’m sure the medicine they have her on is destroying her stomach. She has been on your level 2 protocol for the past year. We're going to be talking about: • Armour • Nature Throid • NP Thyroid These all contain pig thyroid extracts. Why would someone feel worse with something more natural versus something synthetic? It could be because Armour, Nature Throid, and NP Thyroid have additional ingredients that you're reacting to like dextrose or cornstarch. What I would do if I had this condition: • Switch to Synthroid (synthetic T4) • Take Thytrophin PMG (thyroid extract without the hormones) With healthy keto and intermittent fasting, the need for thyroid hormones will go down, and it will help you drop inflammation. You may also want to take vitamin D. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. When it comes to nutrition benefits, clams are interesting creatures. For example, they are a well known as a source of iron. There are two types of iron - heme and non-heme iron. Heme-iron is more bioavailable, which means it is better absorbed and can be utilized by the body. Clams have both versions of iron, and a 3-ounce serving of clams can provide up to 24 mg of iron. But they are an excellent source of: - Omega-3 fatty acids - Protein - Vitamin A - Niacin - Potassium - Thiamin - Calcium - Thiamine - Folate - Choline - Magnesium - Sodium - Iron - Vitamin B12 - Selenium -Manganese -Vitamin C -Copper - Phosphorus -Riboflavin - Zinc - Vitamin E - Vitamin B6 - Vitamin K The list goes on and on...and my guest on today's show, Craig Dinkel - a supplement formulator, ultra-endurance athlete, altitude specialist and much more - has managed to study and harness the power of clams. Download my free thyroid resources here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here Are you currently taking Natural Desiccated thyroid hormone? Maybe you are considering using this medication. Either way, there are some things you should know BEFORE you start using it. Like any medication, NDT is not a perfect medication and it does have some problems. I'm actually a big fan of NDT as a medication and I use it on a lot of my patients, but I am also aware that it isn't perfect and it doesn't work for everyone. Some of these problems include: #1. The formula keeps changing. The inactive ingredients in Armour thyroid, for instance, have changed several times throughout the last decade. Each time they have been changed there have been a number of people in which the medication seems to not be working as well. #2. It isn't always easy to get. Doctors have a bias towards T4 only thyroid medications compared to NDT formulations. NDT, while helpful, can be very difficult to get. #3. The amount of T4 and T3 in each dose is static. The dosing of NDT in each grain is always the same. What if you need more T3 relative to T4? What if your TSH is suppressed while taking NDT but your free thyroid hormones are low? There's no way to increase each component unless you take a new medication. #4. Not everyone responds well to T3. Certain people respond to anxiety, panic attacks, and heart palpitations when taking T3. #5. It may flare up your immune system. Because NDT is animal sourced and contains animal proteins and enzymes there is a small chance that it can flare up your immune system and worsen thyroid function in people with Hashimoto's. #6. Doctors tend to underdose NDT. Most doctors tend to underdose NDT, especially when transitioning patients from T4 to NDT. This is a big problem because many patients who try it aren't taking enough and they never feel "better". This is lesson #9 in my thyroid beginner series and today it's all about NDT or natural desiccated thyroid! So what is NDT? Stands for Natural Desiccated Thyroid. This thyroid medication is porcine-derived which means it comes from the thyroid gland of pigs. It contains both the active T3 thyroid hormone and the inactive thyroid hormone T4. The ratio of T4 to T3 is around 76% T4 to 23% T3 which is roughly similar to the same amount that your thyroid gland produces naturally of 80:20. NDT is felt to be safer and more natural than other synthetic hormones such as Synthroid or Levothyroxine and other people believe it's the best thyroid medication. But is that actually true? There may be some truth to it, but your main goal should be to always find the best thyroid medication for YOU. Some of the problems with NDT include: - Many people take too much thyroid hormone which may cause issues - Dosing is static which means you can’t tweak the T4 and T3 concentrations. - May lead to variations in free T3 & Free T4 levels. - Symptoms arise from the use of T3 which can be difficult to manage in some patients. - May be hard to break down for some patients in the intestines due to fillers or dyes. - May lead to immunogenic reaction (may not be ideal for patients with Hashimoto’s) So with that in mind, who should use NDT? I've come up with a quick list below: - Those who have failed T4 medication. - Those with low free T3 levels (usually need a T3 medication). - Those who are post-thyroidectomy. This isn't an all-inclusive list but it should really help to get you started and determine if NDT is right for you! Hey guys! I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. I write about thyroid disorders, weight loss, insulin resistance, estrogen/progesterone balance on my blog. I truly believe that hormone balance is the key to managing your weight, your mood and your quality of life which is why I'm so passionate about it. Winning the Archibald Prize as Guy Maestri did in 2009 would be a defining moment in most artist’s careers, but he is quick to cite physical immersion in the landscape as revolutionary to his painting practice. It’s easy to gloss over the history of plein-air as a European tradition, born of gentle grasses and mild sunlight. Practiced in Australia, away from the slip of green coastline, plein-air demands rigor of vast dimensions. For Maestri, the material and temporal challenges of extended painting sessions in the hard country around Hill End, Wilcannia and Broken Hill has been instrumental in a new understanding of local art histories and ecologies, as well as the atmospheric and elemental qualities of landscape. Beholden to intimacies of place, the artist stakes out a subtle void or stillness in these dry landscapes without surrendering his animated, almost kinetic approach to paint. Masquerading as a shady retreat, the studio retains its disciplinarian attitude but demands a different kind of focus. Here the void is more theatrical, Maestri’s compositions orchestrated with operatic tempo. Desiccated road-kill (the anti-trophy of inland highways) perform as contemporary Gothic vanitas, shot through with equal measure of beauty and pathos, the eye and the heart facing off. A graduate of the National Art School, Maestri won the 2014 Kings School Art Prize and the 2013 Premier’s Plein Air Painting Prize. He is a regular finalist in the Wynne Prize for Landscape at the Art Gallery of NSW and his work is held in several public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery and Parliament House collections. Topics Discussed In This Episode: His experience studying at The National Art School in Sydney Education in the arts Exploring mediums within your artistic practice How his work has evolved over the years His paintings of road kill Discussing self portraiture How he began experimenting with sculptures His process creating his sculptures Morbid curiosities Wes Anderson www.artistdecoded.com

*Get ready for an inspiring, honest, emotional, and heartfelt show with Dr. Al Danenberg.* Dr. Danenberg has been a periodontist in South Carolina for 44 years, dealing with gum and mouth disease, and appreciating the role of gut health as the centerpiece of healing and wellness. He is also one of the earliest certified Primal Health Coaches ( http://primalhealthcoach.com ) , and is considered a poster boy for ancestral living in the older age groups. However, Dr. Al’s health journey has come with some major ordeals that he will detail in this show. You’ll learn about the incredible transformation he experienced after switching to a Paleo diet at the age of 66. He explains that this total lifestyle change was actually a much needed and necessary method for healing as he walks us through the reasons that led to this change (having a stroke and later being diagnosed with cancer). He talks about watching weight drop off his body - to the point of 30-something pounds - over the course of two years, and how he was able to finally ditch the seven medications that his physicians had prescribed to him (not to mention claimed he needed to take for the rest of his life!). You’ll learn the unbelievable and inspiring story of how Dr. Al went from being diagnosed with cancer to being cancer-free. He explains his decision to say no to chemotherapy (which was insisted on by his doctor) and he clues us in on fascinating facts from many compelling studies that support the idea that a strict animal based diet, with no need for pharmaceutical drugs, is actually the most effective method of resolving chronic and cancerous health issues. Interestingly, he became intrigued by an animal based diet in early 2020 and has been following and advocating that strategy for over a year. Dr. Al does a great job of explaining the link between gut function and overall health (especially periodontal disease) and how eating an animal-based diet can help you heal from gut dysfunction that you may not even be aware of. The show ends with Dr. Al commenting on the 10 innovative health tips he himself follows to protect himself and continue to thrive. His bottom line is ultimately to put the most emphasis on having a robust immune system. Here is a great list he has generously shared of his top 10 health tips: *10 Health Tips From Dr. Al Danenberg* 1. *Eat a healthy diet:* I follow my animal-based diet, which I call the Better Belly Blueprint. It is an organic, gluten-free, nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory eating plan. I consume a fat-to-protein ratio measured in grams of approximately 2:1 per meal. I eat when I’m hungry and drink when I’m thirsty. I occasionally eat some plants (no more than 10% by volume of a plate of food) that are low in phytates, oxalates, and lectins. I also cycle out of ketosis once a week by eating approximately 100 grams of carbs for that one day to maintain my Metabolic Flexibility. 2. *Fortify my gut and maintain an intact gut epithelial barrier:* I take 2 caps of MegasporeBiotic (from Microbiome Labs). I also take 2 caps of TerraFlora Deep Immune, which also stimulates the production of interferons (IFNs) as well as activates downstream immune cells to support my immune system (from Enviromedica). 3. *Support my bone:* I take 6 caps of OsteoVegan (from NuMedica), 2 caps of Megaquinone K2-7 (from Microbiome Labs), and 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 (from NatureWise). *4. Help repair my mitochondria:* I use PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Therapy using the PureWave PEMF mat first thing in the morning for 30-minutes at setting “Basis – 1”, afternoon session for 30-minutes at setting “Basis – 5”, and at bedtime for 30-minutes at setting “Basis – 1”. *5. Assure animal-based nutrients from organs for my cells* : I take 5 caps of Desiccated Organ Complex and 4 caps of Desiccated Bone Marrow (from Enviromedica). *6. Control pain:* I take 200 mg or 400 mg of ibuprofen rarely and only when necessary. *7. Target specific proteins involved in my cancer* : I take one human-derived monoclonal antibody immunotherapy. Darzalex ** attacks a specific protein on the surface of malignant plasma cells. Along with Darzalex, I am given premeds (Tylenol, Benadryl, and Decadron) only the day of the injection to limit any side effects. *8. Also, I walk one mile outside every day, weather permitting. *10. Reduce stress:* I meditate and practice diaphragmatic breathing as well as progressive, total body muscle relaxation. *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad’s guest has an amazing story of changing his lifestyle to remedy his health problems. He’d had a stroke and was diagnosed with cancer. [02:16] Al found a place that totally changed his life: his diet, his weight, his need for medication. [07:36] Al discovered a pain in his shoulder that turned out to be diagnosed as terminal cancer! [10:32] The cancer caused many fractures. Al describes how he dealt with that. [18:35] While he was placed in hospice to die, a hurricane came and amazingly, he began to recover. [21:31] Al is suspicious that the cancer may have started all the way back in dental school. [26:07] By rejecting the idea of chemotherapy, Al needed to plan what would be his quality of life and did much research. [29:40] Integrative medicine is the answer. Doctors could get in trouble recommending the dietary changes that helped Al. [34:04] Al’s concept of being more integrated and holistic with the understanding that he wants to have a strong immune system to heal my body as naturally as he can, not curing anything but healing the body is the essence of what he’s trying to do. [36:56] What are so few people interested in making these lifestyle changes? [38:21] You are not a believer until it hits you emotionally. [44:11] In the US population about 94 percent has some dental disease and don’t know it. [46:25] Gut health is the emerging centerpiece of preventative medicine and health. [52:36] What tips can Al give the listener who wants to turn their health around? [53:31] Even though Al is primarily on the carnivore diet, he puts in some carbs about once a week to maintain metabolic flexibility. [59:04] You need to develop alpha diversity which is the diversity of species of microbes and bacteria. [01:01:26] There is mitochondria treatment with pulse electromagnetic field therapy. [01:06:08] Al is a big fan of animal organ supplements, meditation, breathing, ridding stress. [01:13:11] Everybody needs to know there are well-documented options when you are confronted with disease.
