It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” Matthew 13:31–32Today's Gospel presents two brief yet profoundly rich parables—the mustard seed and the leaven—each revealing distinct dimensions of the mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven. Together, they draw our attention to the Kingdom's humble beginnings and hidden power, which unfold silently yet irresistibly in the world and within the human soul.Each parable possesses layers of meaning, and the Church Fathers deeply explored these levels. In the Parable of the Mustard Seed, the seed is frequently interpreted as Christ Himself. As “the smallest of all the seeds,” the mustard seed illustrates the hiddenness and apparent insignificance of Christ's earthly life, from a worldly point of view. He entered the world in obscurity, born in a cave in Bethlehem, fleeing into exile in Egypt, and growing up in the humble village of Nazareth. His divinity—the Eternal Word through whom all things were made—was veiled beneath the lowliness of His humanity.Even as He hung upon the Cross, His divine majesty was hidden from the eyes of the world. Yet from this seed of self-emptying love—this total descent into poverty and death—sprang forth the triumph of the Resurrection, shattering the bonds of sin and death. In His risen glory, Christ has become the “largest of plants,” and, as the parable says, “the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.” This image is often understood as a symbol of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, in which the peoples of the earth find shelter, nourishment, and eternal hope.The mustard seed also represents Christ planted within each soul. When He is sown in the fertile ground of our hearts—through faith, prayer, and the Sacraments—He takes root and grows, transforming our lives from within. Though His presence may begin in us imperceptibly, it has the power to expand beyond all measure, bearing fruit not only in our lives but in the lives of all those we encounter. Ultimately, this growth finds its consummation in the New Heavens and the New Earth, where the Kingdom of God will be fully revealed.The second parable—the leaven—expresses a similar truth in another form. The leaven is often interpreted as Christ or His grace, working silently and effectively. Mixed into three measures of flour, it gradually transforms the entire batch—symbolizing the hidden work of grace within the soul. Here, Christ is not only among us, but within us, sanctifying every part of our being from the inside out.Today's Gospel concludes with a beautiful citation from “the prophet,” taken from Psalm 78:2: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 13:35). On the surface, the parables appear simple, but they conceal divine truths from those who approach with indifference or pride. Yet for those who receive them in faith and prayerfully ponder them, the Holy Spirit opens the inner meaning. What was hidden from the beginning of creation is now disclosed—not to the wise and learned of this world, but to the humble of heart. In this way, the parables serve as a school of divine wisdom, inviting the soul to move beyond mere appearances into the depths of God's eternal plan.Reflect today on the hidden ways in which Christ is at work in your life. Are you attentive to His quiet growth within you? Do you nourish the seed of His presence through prayer and the Sacraments? Trust that, even in small beginnings, God is building His Kingdom—in you, through you, and for His greater glory.Most glorious King, You desire that Your Kingdom be born within our lives through the grace poured out by Your Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Come to me, Lord, and plant the seed of grace deep within my soul. Let it take root and grow, transforming me according to Your perfect will. Through me, expand Your Kingdom on earth, until the day we behold the fullness of Your eternal Kingdom in glory. This powerful exploration of Revelation 21 takes us into the breathtaking vision of a new heaven and a new earth, where God's ultimate plan for creation reaches its glorious fulfillment. We discover that after the millennium and the final judgment, God doesn't simply renovate what exists—He creates something entirely new using the same Hebrew word 'bara' found in Genesis 1:1, meaning to create something from nothing. The message emphasizes that our current universe, tainted by sin from Satan's rebellion and humanity's fall, will pass away with a great noise, and God will establish a perfect dwelling place. What makes this particularly moving is the promise that the New Jerusalem descends as a bride adorned for her husband—beautiful, prepared, and perfect. Throughout Scripture, we see God's consistent desire to dwell among His people, from walking with Adam in the garden to tabernacling in the wilderness to sending Jesus to live among us. This vision represents the ultimate fulfillment of that longing. The 'no more' verse brings incredible comfort: no more tears, death, sorrow, crying, or pain. Every painful memory will be erased, every tear wiped away. This isn't just future hope—it's present comfort for those of us struggling with loss, grief, and the brokenness of this world. The message calls us to remember that while these promises await us, we must respond to God's invitation today.

Why some struggle to love their homeland We'll disclaim illegitimate hatred or homeland, called oikophobia. Some prefer imaginary or opposite “homes” rather than real ones. Still others are rank traitors for bad reasons, and can be rejected. Yet more legitimately, “home” has a bad stigma for some people. We must not let “home was bad for me” turn into “it's bad for all.” Nor should we let this impulse turn into “the nation is bad for all.” Yes, a few countries are built on truly wicked foundations. But most are not—certainly not those with listeners to us now. Even if people do like America, however, they may feel guilty. A similar impulse occurs to Christians who like other earthly gifts. “Our treasure is in heaven, so nothing here on Earth matters.” Subtle gnosticism: if it all burns, why value these temporal places? 2. How stories remind us of good homelands Naturally we begin with the classics by authors who loved England. Lewis and Tolkien saw bad battles and offered critiques at home. But their stories remind us how good heroes fight for their peoples. Hobbits foresee the danger to the Shire and leave home to stop it. Aragorn loves his people and his country, despite their flaws. Faramir doesn't love weapons but “that [land] which they defend.” Narnia's kings and allies fight for her and for other good countries. The Horse and His Boy is about the good country of Archenland. Even harsh Calormenes, opposed to Narnia, have good qualities. Classic sci-fi by the French Jules Verne honors American spirit. Japanese stories adore American heroes, and we return the favor. On this side of the pond, stories show America's flaws and heroes. Independence Day (1996) shows a pulpified-U.S. fighting aliens. Transformers and Top Gun movies tend to follow that tradition. Overtly “patriotic” stories are more about flavor, not philosophy. Back in the UK, Stephen thinks Harry Potter shows this differently. Spoilers: Harry learns Prof. Dumbledore made a lot of mistakes. Yet the grown-up Harry chooses to stay on his mentor's side. And really, such open-eyed loyalty is the root of good patriotism. 3. And yes, good countries could last forever. These are good enough reasons to love even temporal gifts. But let's add more. I believe great nations are in fact eternal. Why? Because of direct promises about eternity in Scripture. By [the city's] light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. Revelation 21: 24-26 John could have said “earthly kingdoms get destroyed.” He didn't. He clearly means us to think that earthly authorities can continue. And he specifically says “the glory and the honor of the nations.” It would appear that nations (groups of people) are not sinful. New Earth is the fulfillment of God's original purpose for Earth. So why not New Israel? New India? New Britain? New America? Could the “glory and honor” include fireworks? Hot dogs? Ideas? Jesus is King of all eternity. Yet other “kings” will also be known. Other verses refer to saints having leadership in the New Earth. Could some lands try different models? Monarchy? Democracy? Perhaps in the New Earth, we'll see the best of all those systems. Voting could continue, in some ways, certainly at smaller scales. If this seems weird, recall that nations are just large people groups. No prophecy implies a removal of today's diversity of humans. Nor does it imply that everyone will love everyone else the same. New Earth will not sanctify “everyone belongs to everyone else.” Surely, after loving Jesus most, we'll also love others differently. You'll love your own family “more” than other people's families. And if you were married, you'll love him or her more than others. So it is with countries. It's okay, even good, to have preferences. We want people to like their own spouses/families/countries most. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.” Matthew 10:16–18No one is naturally drawn to persecution. We flee from it. We are made for communion with one another. In Heaven, and in the New Heavens and New Earth at the end of time, our eternal experience will be of peace, unity, and solidarity with all as we jointly gaze upon and adore the Beatific Vision of the King of the Universe.Today, however, the kingdom of darkness retains a great hold on this fallen world. War, violence, injustice, and divisions of every kind affect families, communities, and nations because hostility is much easier to achieve than the peace and harmony that Christ seeks to establish through the inauguration of His Kingdom.One of the surest ways to avoid persecution is to stand for nothing. Those who hold no moral convictions or remain silent about the truths of the faith are unlikely to draw the world's wrath. But those who speak with clarity and charity about the eternal truths of the Gospel often find themselves the object of rejection.This was the reality for which Jesus was preparing the Twelve Apostles. Today's Gospel comes from a lengthy exhortation Jesus delivered to His Twelve as He was sending them out two by two to proclaim the arrival of the Kingdom of God. They were to go forth with courage, rely on divine providence, perform miracles, and prepare the various towns and villages to which they were sent for Jesus' coming.At first, one might think that entering a Jewish town to share the good news that the Messiah had arrived—and was soon coming to them in person—would be met with much rejoicing. However, that's not the reality for which Jesus prepared them. He offers a striking image, saying He is sending the Twelve “like sheep in the midst of wolves.” This evokes both the innocence they were to embody and the hostility they would inevitably face. As sheep, they were to act with meekness, vulnerability, and complete dependence on the Good Shepherd's providence.Today, as our Lord sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel within our families, communities, and world, we should expect nothing other than what the Twelve encountered. For example, those who uphold the Church's moral teachings publicly often provoke strong resistance. Even proclaiming that salvation is found solely through Jesus Christ can lead to hostility. The accusation is frequently made that such beliefs are intolerant or judgmental, when in truth they are rooted in love and fidelity to God's revelation—and in genuine concern for the good of every soul. If we wish to continue Jesus' mission of establishing His Kingdom, we must be prepared for persecution by knowing how to respond to it. Returning hatred for hatred or persecution for persecution is not the Gospel. Instead, we must expect and anticipate hostility when we become messengers of the Truth—and respond with serpent-like shrewdness and dove-like simplicity. We must perceive dangers, avoid traps, and navigate persecution without being naïve. We must also embrace sincerity of heart, freedom from malice, and unwavering peace. Reflect today on whether you are willing to endure hardship for the sake of Christ. Is your heart prepared to speak the truth in love and to receive rejection with peace? Pray for the grace to imitate the Apostles, who went forth not in fear but in trust. Resolve to bring the light of the Gospel into a dark and hostile world with shrewdness, simplicity, fidelity, courage, and meekness, knowing that the Good Shepherd will guide and protect you always, when you act in accord with His perfect will for the mission on which you are sent. Most glorious King, You came to establish Your Kingdom on earth in preparation for the Eternal Kingdom to come. Please send me forth to prepare the way for Your coming—into the hearts of my family and friends, into the wider community, and into every place where You call me to bear witness in the world. May I act with the shrewdness of serpents and the gentleness of doves, with wisdom and humility, as I seek to prepare the way for Your Kingdom of truth and love. Read OnlinePraying to the Father in the SonAt that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” Matthew 11:25–27This passage beautifully summarizes the entire Christian life—the life to which we are called and in which we find our purpose, meaning, and ultimate fulfillment. Jesus begins by offering praise to the “Father, Lord of heaven and earth.” Though Jesus Himself is fully God, “one in being with the Father”—co-eternal and consubstantial—He nevertheless offers praise to the Father.In the original Greek, the phrase “I give praise to you…” (exomologoumai) indicates an open, public, and full acknowledgment by the Son of the Father's sovereignty and gracious will. The Father is the All-Powerful Lord of all that exists—everything in the heavens and on earth. Jesus expresses this fundamental stance toward the Father for two reasons: first, because it is eternally true; and second, so that we might humble ourselves and join Him in praying the same prayer—through, with, and in Jesus.This prayer closely parallels the opening of the Lord's Prayer (the “Our Father”), because both begin with a direct acknowledgment and praise of the Father's holiness and sovereignty. The Lord's Prayer is the perfect prayer precisely because it was given to us by Jesus Himself. After addressing the Father, it presents seven petitions. According to Saints Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, the first two petitions—“hallowed be Thy name” and “Thy Kingdom come”—reveal the central purpose of our lives: to glorify God eternally and to be caught up in, and actively participate in that glory by becoming full members of His Kingdom. In today's prayer, Jesus says “these things” have been revealed “to little ones” and that the Son can choose to reveal the Father to whom He wishes.We are drawn into Jesus' prayer and intimate relationship with the Father precisely when Jesus reveals the Father to us: “No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” Because Jesus deeply desires that we come to know and love the Father with the same love He has for Him, His prayer continues by gently inviting us—especially when burdened by weariness, weakness, or sin—to lay our burdens down before His merciful power and glory: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).This tender invitation reveals Jesus' deepest desire for us: that we would enter into His love for the Father, share intimately in the union between Father and Son, and thus magnify and glorify the Most Holy Trinity—not only in our earthly journey but eternally in Heaven. Indeed, what a sublime and glorious calling we have received!Reflect today upon this beautiful prayer, knowing in your heart that Jesus Himself invites you to pray it with Him, through Him, and in Him. He longs for His voice to resonate within your voice, His love to beat within your heart, and His holy desires to shape your own. Turn your gaze toward the Father—He who is both the Source and ultimate goal of your existence—and strive lovingly and humbly to accomplish all things according to His gracious and holy will.Our Father, You who dwell in the heavens and within the souls of Your sanctified ones, may Your eternal essence, Your holy Name—the One who was, who is, and who is to come, the Great I AM—be honored, praised, and glorified forever. Read OnlineThe Eternal Marriage to ComeThe disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” Matthew 9:14–15In Isaiah 54:5 and Hosea 2:16–20, God is portrayed as the divine Bridegroom who espouses Israel. By invoking this imagery, Jesus reveals His divine identity as the Bridegroom who establishes a new relationship between God and His people—a relationship initially characterized by joy, intimacy, and celebration rather than sorrow.However, Jesus quickly adds a sobering note: “The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” This verse points directly to His coming Passion and death, and to our interior participation in His Passion. It is for those moments that fasting produces a necessary preparation for the sense of loss and sacrifice we are called to make throughout life.Everyone loves a wedding, especially when celebrated by faith-filled people who anticipate a fruitful life together. As the bride walks down the aisle, her face radiates joy, and the groom waits eagerly at the altar. A holy marriage reflects the ultimate destiny of Christ and His Bride, the Church. Fidelity, unity, fruitfulness, consolation, and permanence are all aspects of the communion we are invited to share with our loving God.These beautiful aspects of marriage prophetically anticipate what is to come, especially when the Bridegroom returns in glory to usher in the New Heavens and the New Earth. They also represent what we are invited to experience, by grace, during our earthly pilgrimage toward the final union in Heaven—a relationship with God that is grounded in joy, intimacy, and celebration.During this pilgrimage, the Bridegroom is at times “taken away.” Spiritually speaking, this means that Christ occasionally permits His consoling presence to be withdrawn from the soul. He does this not because He abandons us, but because, in His wisdom, He desires our growth in virtue, faith, and spiritual maturity through trials. Such purification is our participation in Christ's Passion, which both cleanses and restores the soul, transforming us into the new creation we are called to be by fully dying with and in Christ, so as to share in His new life.When the sensible consolations of grace diminish, the soul experiences spiritual fasting. Although initially painful, this fasting instills a greater urgency to seek Christ through deeper prayer. If we continually felt God's consoling presence, our love might become self-centered—loving God only because He comforts us.In the Old Testament, fasting primarily expressed external repentance. Jesus transforms fasting into a spiritual exercise that strengthens the soul during trials, dryness, and loss. Habitual fasting, such as weekly abstinence, disciplines our interior life, enabling us to love God even when consolation is absent.When the Bridegroom is “taken away,” our spiritual senses sharpen, and our longing for Christ grows more fervent. Thus, Christ's apparent absence becomes an opportunity for greater intimacy, guiding us toward a more profound, selfless love—seeking Christ Himself purely for His sake. Reflect today on how you respond when God seems distant. Do you turn toward Him with increased trust and prayer, or do you withdraw? When God seems distant or when your prayer feels dry, do you recognize the value in those moments? Resolve to engage in forms of physical fasting and other penitential acts as a way of training yourself to enter spiritual fasting with hope and strength. Eternity Future: The Glorious New Heaven, New Earth, and the Literal Holy City New Jerusalem After the thousand-year reign of Christ upon this earth and after the final judgment at the Great White Throne, Scripture opens the door to the eternal state. The old order ends completely, and God brings forth a new creation filled with His presence, His glory, and His redeemed people. This is not a vague spiritual realm. It is a real, tangible, physical reality that will last forever. Let us begin by anchoring ourselves in the immediate events that lead into this eternal future. After the thousand years expire, Satan is released for a short time. He deceives the nations one last time. They gather in vast numbers like the sand of the sea to surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire comes down from God out of heaven and devours them. Then the devil himself is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet already are. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Immediately following this, John sees the Great White Throne. The One seated upon it causes the earth and the heaven to flee away. There is no place found for them. The dead, small and great, stand before God. Books are opened, including the book of life. Every person is judged according to their works recorded in the books. The sea gives up its dead. Death and hell deliver up their dead. All are judged. Then death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Whoever is not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. With the judgment complete and the old creation removed, John records the breathtaking vision of what comes next. The New Heaven and the New Earth John writes: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” The old heaven and earth do not merely receive a fresh coat of paint. They pass away entirely. The elements melt with fervent heat. Everything built on the foundation of sin and rebellion is dissolved. In its place God creates something entirely new in quality and character—a heaven and earth where righteousness dwells perfectly and permanently. There is no more sea. Throughout the Bible the sea often pictures unrest, chaos, and separation. In this new creation those things are gone. There will be no restless tossing of waves, no vast oceans dividing continents, no symbol of the wicked whose waters cast up mire and dirt. The new earth will be a place of perfect order, perfect stability, and perfect unity under the rule of God. The prophet Isaiah had already seen this coming reality hundreds of years earlier. He declared: “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock; and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.” While some aspects of this prophecy find expression during the millennial kingdom, the complete and final fulfillment belongs to the eternal state we are considering now. Grief, frustration, premature death, and the curse upon creation will be remembered no more. The new creation will be a place of unending joy and perfect fulfillment. The Literal Holy City, New Jerusalem, Descending from Heaven John continues: “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” This is a real, literal city. It is not an allegory or a symbol for something else. It is a tangible, physical city that descends from the very presence of God. Its preparation is described as that of a bride adorned for her husband—beautiful, pure, radiant, and perfectly suited for the glorious purpose for which it was made. The city itself shines with the glory of God. Its light is like a most precious stone, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. It radiates the very presence and holiness of the One who created it. An angel carries John in the Spirit to a great and high mountain so he can see this city clearly. The angel says, “Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.” Then John beholds the city descending out of heaven from God. The Massive Scale and Perfect Design of the City The city is foursquare. Its length is as large as its breadth. John measures it with a golden reed and finds it to be twelve thousand furlongs in length, breadth, and height. Twelve thousand furlongs equals approximately fifteen hundred miles. Picture a city that stretches one thousand five hundred miles from north to south, one thousand five hundred miles from east to west, and rises one thousand five hundred miles into the sky. It is a perfect cube of staggering proportions—larger than any city humanity has ever imagined or built. The wall of the city is measured at one hundred forty-four cubits according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. This wall is great and high, providing perfect security and separation from anything unholy. The city has twelve gates—three on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. At each gate stands an angel. On the gates are written the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. The wall itself rests upon twelve foundations, and in those foundations are written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. This design reflects perfect governmental order and divine completeness. The twelve gates and twelve foundations speak of access and stability rooted in God's covenant dealings with His people throughout history. The angels at the gates guard the holiness of the city. Nothing unworthy will ever pass through them. The Breathtaking Materials and Radiant Beauty The building materials of this city are beyond anything known on the present earth. The wall is constructed of jasper. The entire city is pure gold, and this gold is like clear glass—transparent and flawless. The foundations of the wall are adorned with every kind of precious stone in dazzling array: The first foundation is jasper—clear and radiant like the glory of God Himself. The second is sapphire—a deep, heavenly blue. The third is chalcedony—a stone of milky, translucent beauty. The fourth is emerald—a rich, vibrant green. The fifth is sardonyx—layered with bands of red and white. The sixth is sardius—a fiery red stone. The seventh is chrysolite—a golden, transparent gem. The eighth is beryl—a sea-green or blue-green brilliance. The ninth is topaz—a golden yellow that catches the light. The tenth is chrysoprasus—a apple-green stone of rare beauty. The eleventh is jacinth—a violet or reddish-blue gem. The twelfth is amethyst—a deep purple that speaks of royalty and splendor. The twelve gates are each made of a single pearl. Every gate is one enormous pearl. The street of the city is pure gold, transparent as glass. Imagine standing before gates formed from single pearls of unimaginable size. Picture streets of transparent gold that reflect the glory streaming from the throne of God. Picture foundations sparkling with every color of the rainbow in perfect harmony. This is not poetic exaggeration. This is the literal description of the city God has prepared. Its beauty is real, visible, and eternal. The transparency of the gold and the clarity of the jasper reveal a holiness that has nothing to hide. Everything in this city is pure, open, and glorious. No Temple Needed – The Presence of God Fills Everything John notes something remarkable: “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” In the old creation, temples and tabernacles were necessary because God's presence was localized and mediated. In this new city, the entire metropolis is filled with the immediate presence of God and the Lamb. There is no need for a separate building. The whole city functions as the dwelling place of God. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple. Because of this, the city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine in it. The glory of God lights the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. The light is not created light. It is the uncreated, eternal glory of God Himself radiating through the city. There is no night there. The gates are never shut. There is perpetual day because the source of light never sets. Access for the Redeemed and Perfect Security The nations of them which are saved walk in the light of the city. The kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. The gates stand open continually. People from every nation and tribe who have been redeemed enter freely and bring the glory and honor of their cultures and peoples into the presence of God. Yet nothing that defiles, nothing abominable, and nothing that makes a lie can ever enter. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life have access to this glorious city. God Dwells with His People A loud voice from heaven proclaims the central reality of eternity: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” God's presence, once veiled behind curtains and clouds, is now fully and permanently with His people. He dwells among them without any barrier. He Himself wipes away all tears from their eyes. There is no more death. There is no more sorrow. There is no more crying. There is no more pain. The former things—the entire order of sin, curse, and death—have passed away forever. He who sits on the throne declares: “Behold, I make all things new.” These words are true and faithful. It is done. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He gives the water of life freely to everyone who thirsts. The one who overcomes inherits all things. God becomes his God, and he becomes God's son. In contrast, those who refused grace have their part in the lake of fire—the second death. The River of Life and the Tree of Life in the Heart of the City John is shown the very center of this glorious city: “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” A pure river of the water of life flows directly from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It is clear as crystal—perfectly pure and refreshing. On both sides of this river stands the tree of life. It produces twelve different kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. Its leaves bring healing to the nations. This is the complete reversal of the curse pronounced in Eden. In the beginning, man was barred from the tree of life. Now the tree stands openly in the middle of the city's main street, freely available. The river flows from the very throne. There is no more curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb is central to everything. God's servants serve Him with perfect joy and without weariness. They see His face. His name is written in their foreheads as a mark of eternal ownership and security. There is no night. The Lord God gives them light. And they reign forever and ever. The Eternal Reign and God All in All When the millennial kingdom ends and all enemies have been subdued, including death itself, the Son delivers up the kingdom to the Father. All rule and authority are put down. God becomes all in all. The redeemed reign with Christ in this glorious city forever. Their service is joyful. Their worship is perfect. Their fellowship with God and with one another is unbroken and eternal. The former things have passed away. All things are new. The city stands as a real, glorious, physical reality—massive, radiant, secure, and filled with the immediate presence of God. Its streets of transparent gold, its pearl gates, its jeweled foundations, its river of life, and its tree of life will be seen and enjoyed by the redeemed for all eternity. This is the inheritance of those who overcome. This is the home prepared for the people of God. This is the city whose builder and maker is God. The closing words of Scripture call us to readiness: “Behold, I come quickly.” Blessed is the one who keeps the words of this prophecy. The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let the one who hears say, “Come.” Let the one who is thirsty come. Whoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
