Playoff heartbreak stings—especially when your trusty playoff beard gets shaved after an early exit! We dive in with a spot-on 1998 Christmas throwback: hyped for that Nintendo 64, only to unwrap a total dud gift instead. That crushing disappointment mirrors owning Jahmyr Gibbs all year... or racing to claim the perfect waiver pickup, heart pounding, just to see it's already 85%+ rostered. No coal here—every player Trent breaks down is under 40% owned on Sleeper: true low-rostered gems with legit Week 17 upside to rescue your playoff hopes or straight-up win you the ship. From streaming QBs to handcuff RBs, volume WRs, and sneaky TEs, he's got you covered position-by-position, then closes with the fan-favorite "Trending or Ending" segment to separate the real plays from the hype. Building SimCity explores the history of computer simulation by chronicling one of the most influential simulation games ever made: SimCity. As author Chaim Gingold explains, Will Wright, the visionary designer behind the urban planning game, created SimCity in part to learn about cities, appropriating ideas from traditions in which computers are used as tools for modeling and thinking about the world as a complex system. As such, SimCity is a microcosm of the histories and cultures of computer simulation that engages with questions, themes, and representational techniques that reach back to the earliest computer simulations. Gingold uses SimCity to explore a web of interrelated topics in the history of technology, software, and simulation, taking us far and wide—from the dawn of programmable computers to miniature cities made of construction paper and role-play. An unprecedented history of Maxis, the company founded to bring SimCity to market, the book reveals Maxis's complex relations with venture capitalists, Nintendo, and the Santa Fe Institute, which shaped the evolution of Will Wright's career; Maxis's failure to back The Sims to completion; and the company's sale to Electronic Arts. Building SimCity boasts a treasure trove of visual matter to help bring its wide-ranging subjects to life, including painstakingly crafted diagrams that explain SimCity's operation, the Kodachrome photographs taken by Charles Eames of schoolchildren making model cities, and Nintendo's manga-style “Dr. Wright” character design, just to name a few. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design and game studies at the HNU University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm, Germany, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal TITEL kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter Game Studies Watchlist. In today's Daily Fix:Casey Hudson, director of the just-announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is assuring fans that the game will be out before 2030. This comes after some on social media are guessing the game won't be about until then, which isn't too wild of a guess considering Hudson's new studio was just formed this past summer, and the long development times of Triple-A games these days. There's also the KOTOR remake, which was announced in 2021 and has seemingly been stuck in development hell since then. In other news, Larian Studios just dropped a new update for console versions of Divinity: Original Sin 2. The game is now optimized for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, as well as Nintendo Switch 2. The next game in the series, titled Divinity, was just announced at least week's Game Awards. And speaking of, Phantom Blade Zero made a splash at The Game Awards with a new trailer, but if you're an Xbox or Nintendo fan, don't expect the game to launch side-by-side with the PS5 version. Phantom Blade Zero is a PS5 exclusive for at least one year.

What games have you only ever beaten once and never returned to? On this episode, we examine our own personal one-and-dones, games that once we finished, for whatever reason, we decided never to return to.
On the final episode of 2025, we talk about the rise, fall, undignified death, and resurrection of what's now the only print video game magazine left in the United States: Game Informer.

Send us a textThis week,We open with a long-overdue Level 80 progress check-in, breaking down how our grind is going, what's changed since the last update, and whether the road to Level 80 still feels achievable (or mildly terrifying).Next up is News Part 1, featuring a full breakdown of the brand-new Forever Friend system. We explain how it works, how many points you'll need, what rewards and unlocks are on offer, and whether this new progression layer is worth the effort for a remote trade? That leads straight into huge Pokémon GO Fest 2026 news, with live locations officially announced for Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen. Naturally, we debate whether any of these cities are making our travel plans. The fun ramps up with the Flex Game, where Gold Tier Patreon supporters choose the categories — expect big flexes & bold claims. We then reflect on the December Community Day Weekend, sharing our best catches, how much we actually played, and what Community Days in 2025 got right (and wrong). In News Part 2, we cover the upcoming Grookey Community Day and dive into Winter Holiday Part 1 & 2, looking at bonuses, spawns, and seasonal vibes. The game follows the titular Commander Keen, an eight-year-old child genius, as he retrieves the stolen parts of his spaceship from the cities of Mars, prevents a recently arrived alien mothership from destroying landmarks on Earth, and hunts down the leader of the aliens, the Grand Intellect, on the alien home planet. The three episodes feature Keen running, jumping, and shooting through various levels while opposed by aliens, robots, and other hazards. In September 1990, John Carmack, while working at programming studio Softdisk, developed a way to implement smooth side-scrolling in video games on IBM-compatible personal computers (PCs), which at the time was the province of video game consoles or more game-focused home computers like the Commodore 64. Carmack and his coworkers John Romero and Tom Hall, along with Jay Wilbur and Lane Roathe, developed a demo of a PC version of Super Mario Bros. 3, but failed to convince Nintendo to invest in a PC port of their game. Soon afterwards, however, they were approached by Scott Miller of Apogee Software to develop an original game to be published through the Apogee shareware model. Hall designed the three-part game, John Carmack and Romero programmed it, Wilbur managed the team, and artist Adrian Carmack helped later in development. The team worked continuously for almost three months on the game, working late into the night at the office at Softdisk and taking their work computers to John Carmack's home to continue developing it.Released by Apogee in December 1990, the trilogy of episodes was an immediate success. Apogee, whose monthly sales had been around US$7,000, made US$30,000 on Commander Keen alone in the first two weeks and US$60,000 per month by June. The first royalty check convinced the development team, then known as Ideas from the Deep, to quit their jobs at Softdisk. The team founded id Software shortly thereafter and went on to produce another four episodes of the Commander Keen series over the next year. The trilogy was lauded by reviewers due to the graphical achievement and humorous style, and id Software went on to develop other successful games, including Wolfenstein 3D (1992) and Doom (1993). The Vorticons trilogy has been released as part of several collections by id and Apogee since its first release, and has been sold for modern computers through Steam since 2007.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:42 UTC on Sunday, 14 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Ivy.

The NPCs - Video Game Commentary, Video Game News, And More!
Welcome to the long-awaited return of The NPCs, where we're back to discuss video game news, video game insights, provide commentary, and oh so much more.In our absence, a lot of things have happened in the video game universe: Roguelike's have taken over the Steam charts, Elden Ring got a multiplayer game, Fortnite still exists, and we still don't have Grand Theft Auto 6…But one thing has been on our minds for at least half of the year: have we finally reached the end of the console wars? Microsoft has doubled down on a marketing campaign where “Everything is an Xbox,” making it so phones, TVs, even your smart fridge can play Xbox games without needing an Xbox at all. In tandem, we also saw bridges built with core first-party titles like Forza, Gears of War, and even Halo showing up on the PlayStation 5. With the possibility of Nintendo also receiving similar treatment, has Microsoft finally bowed out of the console race? Do we even need consoles anymore given more of a transition to PC-based architecture? Let's talk about it in our great return episode: The Console Wars Concludes…Intro: Run by J+1Post-Break Intro: Getaway by J+1Outro: Haunt by J+1

Lured Up Podcast 375 Live Streamed on - 12/9/2025 Publish Date - 12/12/2025 Temperatures are dropping for Ken and Adam in the Northeast, but that isn't stopping the game from keeping things hot! In the last week we journeyed to Paldea, recapped the year's Community Day lineup, as we continue to grind through the GO Pass and the leveling update. The announcement of Forever Friends has rekindled old friendships and has remotivated Trainers to get back on the gifting grind. This week also brings us the Well Armed event with the release of Clobbopus along with boosted Shiny rates for DMAX Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. Well Armed's Global Challenges will be the perfect complement for GMAX Snorlax this weekend, as rewards include increased Candy XL from Max Battles. Niantic has been doing a great job with events supporting each other, and allowing for some great stacking of bonuses. Forever Friends brings Remote Trading, which is a feature that Trainers never thought they would see. With a slick interface and a fair trading process, this will keep Best Friends engaged and interacting. Having a Prestige based leveling system will make Forever Friends earn their namesake, and worth keeping on your list. The Friends List will also be increasing from 450 to 650, rolled out in waves of 50. While there hasn't been any announcement about increased gifting ability, the additional friends are still a huge win. December still has a lot of fight left in it with the Winter Holiday events and Celestial Research Day coming soon. We also can't forget about the City Safari events happening this weekend as well. It's pretty wild to think how aggressive the pacing of the game is and how it keeps packing out the calendar. We also have confirmation on GO Fest locations, with the confirmation of Chicago and the announcement of Tokyo and Copenhagen. We wrap things up with a conversation about remote play, and how Niantic has done a great job in rolling out remote features, without it having a big impact on IRL play. Smaller communities will still feel a sting if they lose 10-20% of their attendees, but the remote accessibility can at least make up for the gameplay elements, allowing the smaller groups to take down the tougher bosses. We wonder if there is anything left to add to the remote lineup, or if we have seen everything there is to be done already released! Battletoads is our NSO Game of the Week, and this one is a true Nintendo classic. Released on the NES in 1991, it became famous for its fast paced variety, cartoon style, and one of the most intense difficulty curves in gaming history. Tonight we look at what made Battletoads so memorable, how it mixed beat em up action with racing and platforming, and why it has remained a staple of retro gaming conversations for more than thirty years. We also dive into its development at Rare, the origins of the Battletoads characters, the wild level design, and how the game earned its reputation as one of the hardest games ever made. Plus, we will ask the community the big question, what would you review Battletoads at today?Content Creation Gear https://n64josh.com/elgato use code N64JoshFor ad-free episodes, subscribe here. https://anchor.fm/nintendo-power-cast/subscribeConnect with meMy Nintendo Switch Recommendations: http://n64josh.com/amazonDiscord: http://n64josh.com/discord Twitch: https://twitch.com/n64josh Tiktok: https://tiktok.com/n64josh Twitter: https://twitter.com/n64josh
