In this episode, I break down what makes each film a standout in the science fiction genre, exploring their ground-breaking 3D visuals, intense action sequences, and lasting legacy. From the vast, empty void of Gravity to the stylized brutality of Dredd, each of these films uses 3D in unique ways. In this episode, I break down how The Martian's landscapes, Gravity's weightlessness, Dredd's surreal slow-motion sequences, and Edge of Tomorrow's intense battlefields create unforgettable cinematic experiences.Tune in now for a deep dive into these incredible 3D sci-fi films! Whether you're a movie buff, sci-fi fan, or 3D enthusiast, this episode is packed with insights, analysis, and a discussion of how these films continue to leave a lasting impact. The Martian (2015)A gripping survival drama that follows Mark Watney (Matt Damon), an astronaut stranded on Mars after a disastrous mission. Directed by Ridley Scott, this film combines thrilling realism with humor and heart, showcasing NASA's ingenuity and the power of the human spirit. Co-starring Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.Gravity (2013)A technical masterpiece that redefined modern visual effects,Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are astronauts stranded in orbit after their shuttle is destroyed. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the film is an intense, minimalist survival story that thrives on realism, tension, and stunning cinematography.Dredd (2012) Bringing Judge Dredd back to the big screen with a violent, no-nonsense adaptation, Dredd stars Karl Urban as the iconic law enforcer and Lena Headey as the ruthless drug lord Ma-Ma. Directed by Pete Travis and written by Alex Garland, the film strips away the campiness of the 1995 version and delivers a brutal, visually stunning action thriller.Edge of Tomorrow (2014)The final film in our marathon is Edge of Tomorrow, a high-concept sci-fi action film that blends time-loop storytelling with pulse-pounding battles. Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), the film follows Major William Cage (Tom Cruise), who is thrown into an unwinnable war against alien invaders but gains the ability to reset time every time he dies. Emily Blunt co-stars as Sergeant Rita Vrataski, a battle-hardened warrior who once had the same power. Cyberpunk Cinema

Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film DREDD (2012) - directed by Pete Travis, written by Alex Garland, based on the "Judge Dredd" comic by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 21st century as it delves into so many thematic signatures of the sub-genre that it made me smile from ear to fucking ear. It is a criminally overlooked film that has become a cult classic over recent years and deserves to be known by the masses. Join me as I venture deep into Mega City One – where 800 million people live in the ruin of the old world. It's judgment time, baby! So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Cyberpunk? It's one of the most unique science fiction subgenres. Even though it hasn't become as popular as space opera or hard science fiction, it has its hardcore fans that have made it remain in the public eye. Japan, alone, it has actually become one of the most popular science fiction story arcs. The movie DREDD (2012), like many American cyberpunk films, was not a box office success, but it has gained an amazing cult following since. In a dystopian future, the government has put in place judges to keep order in place. When a slum tower block becomes the haven of kingpin Madeline Madrigal (Lena Headey), Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is sent along with rookie Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to investigate three murders. After the capture of one of Madeline's lieutenants that could implicate her in the murders, she shuts down the building and Judge Dredd is now fighting for his life.DREDD was directed by Pete Travis from a script by A-lister Alex Garland who's known for the novel, THE BEACH, as well as director of EX MACHINA (2015) and ANNIHILATION (2018) as well as the screenwriter for 28 DAYS LATER (2002). The movie was originally released in 3D and shockingly failed at the box office. Receiving great reviews, and paying tribute to the graphic novel that it is based on, your co-hosts take a look at the movie and are joined by special guest actor Dan Lench to discuss the film.

Ten years ago, we saw the second big-screen adaptation of a popular British graphic novel – the previous one (Judge Dredd) which came out in the 1995 starred Sylvester Stallone and was widely disliked by both fans and non-fans of the original comic.  As a result, expectations for this latest version were pretty low in the lead-up to its fall release.  And then people saw it…..and most were pretty blown away!  The story was straightforward, the villain was memorable (Ma-Ma played by Lena Headey), the action was exciting, and even Dredd himself was portrayed by star Karl Urban as the bad-ass anti-hero that hardcore fans had been hoping for!  Unfortunately, it flopped at the box office….though this movie has had a devoted following every since.  Let's revisit this now-cult classic directed by Pete Travis….or was that Alex Garland? :o WARNING: ADULT LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE FEATURED IN CLIPS FOR MOVIEHost: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Staircases have always played a vital role in cinema; any time our hero or villain needs to ascend or descend a level, the humble stair is there to allow it to happen. Ripe for injecting symbolism into a scene or used metaphorically to show our protagonists character development, the stairs are also a place where fights, chases and sometimes comedy can occur. So join us and go stair-crazy with this weeks Top 5 Set On A Staircase. The legendary 2000 A.D. is a British sci-fi comic which has been around since the 1970's and has at one time or another received contributions from some of our most well-known writers and artists, including Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Grant Morrison and Garth Ennis. Undoubtedly the most famous of all its characters is Judge Dredd, a law enforcement officer in the dystopian future city Mega-City One. Sylvester Stallone has already played the character on the big screen but the movie struggled to find an audience as it was stripped essentially of everything that made the character and world he inhabits interesting. Alex Garland and Pete Travis rebooted the persona with Karl Urban starring as the titular Judge in 2012's DREDD. But would this version of the role resonate with the Dads?Obvious humour, catchphrases, pratfalls, silliness and the most ridiculous cranial and facial hair you are ever likely to see combine to give us Chucklevision, a British kids tv comedy starring Barry and Paul Chuckle (the Chuckle Brothers). In 'Trouble In Store' the half-witted mullet-sporters are left in charge of a supermarket and before you can say 'Operation Yewtree' our childish simpletons are neck deep in banana skins, floor polish and wee-jimmy Krankie's orifices. Chuckle? Did I fuck. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Welcome everyone to another episode of Nerds Amalgamated, we would like to take a moment and congratulate all those who are graduating university, school, or just having an excellent week. “The pursuit of knowledge is never ending. The day you stop seeking knowledge is the day you stop growing. Brandon Travis Ciaccio.” So, no we have set a serious mood let’s look at the first topic, which is that video games are an excellent way to combat loneliness. Also, that video games are helpful for men to combat issues such as social isolation and stress for men in today’s society. That’s right, read that correctly, video games are beneficial to men’s health and should be encouraged. What to know more to help develop those arguments for the girlfriend or boss, listen in and find out what we are talking about.Next up Buck has decided to bring us a mystery to try and solve. Now who doesn’t love a good puzzle? If like Buck you love sitting down with a crossword, a Sudoku or reading a good detective novel then you will love this. We have a mystery that is 500 hundred years old, has some of the most baffling elements and to top it off has stumped many professional investigators over the years. We are talking about a mass murder that struck fear in the hearts of the population of England. This is a mystery that is guaranteed to get you remembered in history if you solve it. Want to know what Buck has unveiled for us to ponder, listen in and find out.Now Ben Affleck is not someone who we get excited about, in fact he makes Buck yawn at the mere mention of his name. In fact I just yawned at the thought, crikey why are we talking about him? Well, it appears that he has a movie in the works that is looking kind of good, it is a topic that we hope he does justice to. Now we know that Hollywood has failed to deliver anything great for some time now, but this story has potential. We aren’t going to hold our breathe, and not just because of Benny boy of the sleep inducing performance. The reality is that the story is one that needs to be told with a sensitivity and care that is hard to deliver. This is something the likes of Spielberg should be directing. Want to know what it is we are talking about? You know what to do.As usual we have the regular shout outs, birthdays, remembrances, and special events. We hope you enjoy this episode and if you want to give us feedback we are always happy to hear from you. They published their first book featuring the Berenstain Bears, The Big Honey Hunt, in 1962. At the time, their inspiration, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), was working as an editor in the children's division of Random House Publishing and eagerly approved the concept. In the early 1950s music for the stage dominated his creative activity, the crowning work of this period was the chamber cantata Júlia énekek (‘Julia Songs’, 1956), after which he composed little, until, in 1963 the Sinfonia concertante for clarinet and strings initiated a succession of major works. Welcome to another episode of Don’t Be Crazy! Here we discuss and dissect what makes a film (past or present) absolutely amazing or a pile of rubbish. All that we ask of each other is don’t be crazy. This week we take a look at Dredd (2012) directed by Pete Travis. Set in the not too distant future, Mega City One is over populated and saturated in crime. It's up to the police to act as judge, jury and executioner to uphold the law. Judge Dredd just happens to be the best in the bunch and takes a rookie cop out on her first day. The film stars, Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, and Wood Harris. We hope you enjoy the show! Take a listen and don’t forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. In our last episode of this mini-season, we have reached the end of our focus on the Martial Arts genre, with 2011's THE RAID. After some perhaps surprising reviews, we talk about how who/where we are in life has a huge effect on our reception of the films we watch, as well as some discussions of cinematic violence and consequences. Next Time Our next mini-season is vampire films, and we kick off with 1922's seminal NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR. (It's not the first vampire film, but it is the earliest ‘mainstream' hit...and the first we could readily get hold of, for viewing purposes!) Here's a reminder of that Jackie Chan video referred to in our DRUNKEN MASTER episode, and again today. This is worth reading, thinking about the idea of cinematic claustrophobia — as Rob mentions when talking about the way this film is shot. We also talked about the idea of the underdog — a through-line which you can see from a character like Jirokichi, nearly a hundred years ago, to Rama; you can read a lot more here Finally, in a good place to end our focus on the Martial Arts genre, here's a good summary article (including some films we've covered, and some we haven't been able to).

In this episode, I talk about Pete Travis's dreamy 2015 film, "The Go-Between," produced by the BBC, based on the classic L.P. Hartley novel of the same name, and starring Jim Broadbent, Vanessa Redgrave, and Lesley Manville. It focuses on a 12-year-old boy named Leo Colston who, in the summer of 1900 in England, goes to stay at the opulent estate of his friend, Marcus Maudsley. During his time there, Leo becomes the messenger, or go-between, for Marcus's sister, Marian, and her secret lover, Ted Burgess. After the summer, none of their lives will ever be the same and Leo will be forever haunted by what he experienced. I talk about class, nostalgia, loss of innocence, and the devastating wounds of childhood. At the beginning of the episode, I also discuss how cinema has helped me cope with trauma. We continue our cyberpunk series this week with one of the more recent entries into the subgenre, 2012's adaptation of the 2000 AD comic, DREDD! SYNOPSIS: In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series. Is DREDD a modern classic? As always, we're diving deep into the movie's themes and the behind-the-scenes drama (and there's a lot of it, including reports that it wasn't actually directed by Pete Travis!). It's all the deep end. JUDGEMENT: It's episode Eighteen of Prognosis Negative featuring Eric, Cat, and Katrina! Join us as we skin Pete Travis's gritty distopian mega-thriller Dredd. Let the banter begin! WARNING: This discussion contains miscellaneous SPOILERS pertaining to the film(s) discussed and more! If you are 100% spoilerphobic to films not yet seen, do not complain to us. This episode is mostly negative (though often that is a misnomer) and contains EXPLICIT terms, concepts, and as always expect strokes of innuendo throughout.
