What explains the meteoric rise in Canadian home prices off of a backdrop of 3 million jobs initially lost back in early 2020 with many businesses forced to be shut down and with lockdown, after lockdown? Well if there’s one person who can help answer that question, you know it’s Ben Rabidoux. He’s going to dive deep into a number of factors that, taken together, may help you figure out what’s been happening. Here’s just a sample of the topics we cover in this episode: Most of the people who lost their jobs weren’t in a position to buy in the first placeThose who were, tended to see their financial situations improve during the pandemicLower interest rates have further increased debt servicing abilityPopulation dynamics negatively affected the rental market more than the resale marketChanging consumer preferences, and so much more. Grab your popcorn, because Ben Rabidoux is going to enlighten and entertain you in this episode of Mostly Money.Ben Rabidoux is the President of North Cove Advisors, a Canadian research firm that works exclusively with institutional investors around the world, by providing coverage of Canadian housing, macroeconomic and household credit trends. Darin Diehl has a long history of working in the financial services as an educator and marketer. But in late 2019, he was laid off from his job. Then, in early 2020, he had a heart attack. While being diagnosed and treated for that, doctors also found out that he had advanced lung cancer. Darin thought it would be helpful to share his story, not only from a health perspective, but from a financial and emotional perspective. From what emergency funds they had in place, benefits coverage and insurance, and how his medication for lung cancer has a price tag of $130,000 per year (and he explains how those costs are subsidized). With a recent positive assessment, he now has another set of unique financial considerations: what is the balance to be found between spending more aggressively now in case his life expectancy is much shorter than his financial plan called for, versus what if he has more runway than the doctors originally predicted?Darin is sharing his story because his passion for financial education hasn't dwindled. There are many lessons and thought provoking subjects we touch on in this episode.

Also, it's more of a warning than a truth. Many of the preconceptions and tensions surrounding the wealthy come from pop culture, such as pressure to spend money on certain things and how to accept partners into the family. One of the questions I get asked the most is how to invest or get involved in investing. The reason is that investing gets all the hype in the market, online, and in the news. It's often talked about in an exciting way, dominating headlines and luring investors in for fear of missing out (also known as FOMO). The last few weeks have been no exception with the frenzied trading of GameStop, AMC, and Blackberry. So in this episode, I want to explain how to avoid the fear of missing out when investing. Listen in as I explain some things to be mindful of if you plan on getting involved in the investment industry and how to find an investment accountability buddy. You will learn how to develop an investment strategy, why it’s important to start investing early, and the importance of getting back to basics by setting goals. “From an economic/financial perspective, FOMO is a psychological phenomenon associated with loss aversion, particularly in terms of financial decision making.” - Tracey Bissett This Week on Young Money: Why investing gets so much hype. What happened with GameStop. Why there has been an increase in day trading. How to avoid FOMO in investing. Key takeaways: Get back to basics by setting goals. Develop an investment strategy. Use caution with "hot tips" and validate the source of the information. Start investing early. Mind your own business. Find an investment accountability buddy. The methods of payment we use can influence how much we spend and how we ultimately feel about our purchases. One of the world's leading experts in this area, Profession Avni Shah, joins me to discuss some of her research in this area. Not only do we discuss day to day implications for people, but we also chat about how the "pain of payment" is related to the financial services, and how embedded compensation, fee-based compensation, and fee-for-service compensation models affect how people feel about the advice provided.
This is turning into the Ben Rabidoux podcast. And I'm okay with that. Ben shares his thoughts on housing in Canada so far in 2018 and talks about his $175,000 legal bill incurred battling a real estate industry participant who didn't like the questions he was asking.
Today's guest is Alex Grodnik from Wall Street Oasis which easily one of the largest and best sites out there, for anybody looking to have a career on Bay Street or Wall Street. Alex also hosts their podcast which is called “Moving Up”, but what's also really interesting about him is he actually quit his really well-paying job on Wall Street to start his own business, so I thought this would also be a great episode for anybody who's maybe a little dissatisfied with their job, and is considering a career transition. We talk about why he decided to quit, his top advice for somebody looking to earn some money on the side through their own business, how he's learned to handle rejection really well and use that to propel his career, and much more. It was an absolute blast to talk to Alex, the interview went great, and I'm sure you'll like it. In other news, I wanted to tell you about something that's actually pretty time sensitive, and that is that I've been asked to speak again, at the Canadian Financial Summit and I have free tickets for you! This is a fully online personal finance and investing conference, so you don't have to travel anywhere or buy anything. You can just watch the speakers in your pyjamas if you want and stream the talks right from your computer, tablet or phone. This is the biggest conference of its kind in Canada, and has just about every big hitter in the Canadian personal finance space speaking at it. For example, there will be Rob Carrick from the Globe and Mail, Preet Banerjee from CBC's The National, Ellen Roseman from the Toronto Star, Robb Engen from Boomer and Echo, and many more. It's a real honour to be included again in this group of top experts, and for a limited time I have free tickets for you! To get your free tickets, go to buildwealthcanada.ca/tickets, and there you will find the link to the free tickets. Now what they're going to be doing soon, is transitioning to regular paid tickets so if you're even a little bit interested in attending any of the talks, then go to buildwealthcanada.ca/tickets right now, and secure your tickets. I have absolutely no control over how long they'll be letting me give you free access to the tickets so jump on your phone or computer right now to do it so you don't miss out. All they need is your name and email to send you the tickets so it'll literally take you maybe 20 seconds to do. My talk will be on the three pillars that my wife and I used to become financially independent at 32, so I'll be sharing lots of tips and strategies that have worked well for us in the areas of reducing our spending, increasing our income, and how we optimized our investments to pay the lowest fees and tax which let us reach that financial independence number a lot faster. I hope you will join me, and that link again to get your free tickets for a very limited time is buildwealthcanada.ca/tickets. See you there! Kornel
World renown body language expert Mark Bowden gives us a crash course on body language. Why is it so powerful? And how can we use it to increase the effectiveness of communication? We also go through quite a bit of whisky.
Melissa Agnes is the author of Crisis Ready: Building an Invincible Brand in an Uncertain World. She is a leading authority on crisis preparedness, reputation management, and brand protection and is an advisor to some of today's leading organizations faced with the greatest risks. We discussed a number of real-world examples of brands handling crises, including how Equifax handled the breach of millions of customers' data.
I had a great chat with Cait Flanders about her recently released book, "The Year of Less". The book chronicles 12 months in which she spent almost no money other than on essentials. The book has been garnering international press, including making the front page of the New York Times' website. It is definitely not your average personal finance book - it's quite a bit more than that.
On today's show, I review 10 personal finance books that would make great gifts and/or would be a great start to your own personal finance library. Is securities regulation about to take a step backwards in Canada? A new model for cooperative capital markets regulation that has been proposed might spell the end (or at the very least, the delay) of any Best Interest Standard for financial advisors in Canada, the end or delay of a push to ban embedded commissions, and more. Professor Anita Anand, one of Canada's most respected authorities on securities law, explains the lay of the land when it comes to securities regulation in Canada and explains the main points from her recently published white paper examining the impact of the proposed Cooperative Capital Markets Regulator on investor protection. To cut to the chase: it looks like it could be a step backwards. Here's what you can do if you want to help drive investor protection FORWARD in Canada, not BACKWARD: 1. Consider supporting organizations that fight for investor protection (like FAIR Canada). Disclosure: Preet Banerjee is, current to May 18th, 2017, a member of the board of directors of FAIR Canada: https://faircanada.ca/support-us/ 2. And yes, we'll explain what CRM2 means. We also discuss the idea of "regulatory arbitrage" and how that concept might be used to the advantage of some salespeople (to the disadvantage of financial consumers).

Karl Martin is the founder of Nymi, Inc., a company who wants to disrupt the field of "user authentication". In other words, how do you prove "you are you" to a machine? By using a simple password? Do you use the same one for everything? What if you could replace the need for passwords altogether and increase security? That's the goal of the Nymi Band. There are countless applications, including financial transactions at POS terminals as well as for online shopping. Not so good for action movie plot devices, though.
How do brands compete for your time when we PVR shows and fast forward through commercials, or ditch our TV subscriptions and use Netflix instead? What about ad-blockers on our browsers? Also: avocados and knitting fetishes. My guest this week is one of the top marketing minds you'll find anywhere. Ron Tite is the CEO of The Tite Group, a content marketing agency and he was gracious enough to share some really interesting insights into what he calls "The Expression Economy". Extra notes: This episode contains mild profanity. The comedian we misnamed is actually "Sebastian Maniscalco" and the specific bit we reference can be found here: https://youtu.be/0Swzvm-gXHg
Personal finance author (Stop Over-thinking Your Money!) and TV personality Preet Banerjee and I talk about his journey from race car driver to leading Canadian financial expert. Long episode description: Can I just start off with saying how amazing Preet sounds on my podcast? He puts my “radio voice” to shame! I should have known, he is a podcaster and TV personality after all. I’ve got to say, this is probably one of my favourite podcast episodes (not to bash any of the episodes I’ve done up until this point, they are all amazing too!). Preet is such a cool, genuine guy and it was so nice to hear his story. I mean, how many people do you know who went to school to be a brain surgeon, then pursued a career in race car driving and ended up becoming a well-known financial expert on TV? I guess never having a 5-year plan might be the way to go? Before I get to the important links and book giveaway, I’ve got to hang my head in shame because I still haven’t crossed off 1) get a will and 2) get life and disability insurance off my list. To be fair, I almost did. I made an appointment with a lawyer to get a will done, but had to cancel and just haven’t rescheduled it. But I will get both of these things done before Christmas, mark my words Preet! And you better too…I’m talking to you blog readers and podcast listeners! Important Links Preet Mentioned Preet’s first book, RRSPs: The Definitive Book on Registered Retirement Savings Plans His personal finance blog: Where Does All My Money Go His big break in the National Post: “New Breed of Advisors Shun Mutual Funds” Preet’s podcast that he seriously needs to start up again: Mostly Money, Mostly Canadian Preet’s new book: Stop Over-thinking Your Money!
