The Resurrection of Christ explained1 Corinthians 15:12-34The firstfruits of the harvest and the contrast between Adam and Christ. When the harvest was over before grain could be sold in the markets or could be used by the people, the firstfruits of the harvest had to be offered to God. From a general field the grain was harvested and specially prepared and then offered to God. Only then could the grain be used.Building on that picture, Paul said that until God had raised Christ from the dead, no one had any hope. But His Resurrection became like the grain that had been offered to God: it opened the way for everyone to have hope. He made Adam the symbol of the old earthly order and Christ the symbol of the new orderThe preachers commentaryThank you for tuning into Daily Bible Benefits Have a good and godly Day
Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHCozyEarth.com - promo code HALLMARK for up to 40% off your orderThe movie kicks off with a promotion for The Harmony Channel! They are airing a marathon of their popular Sugarplummed series, and viewers can win a home decorated for Christmas!Cut to real life: Emily is a mom of a moody, artistic teenage girl named Nina and a TikToking teenage boy named Max. She's married to Ben, an architect who never understands what his son is doing—ever.Emily is very type A, complete with her Christmas checklist. Her family doesn't care for her checklist; they just want to do their own thing. Emily's a hot-shot deal maker with an assistant who spends her days watching made-for-TV Christmas movies. Emily explains that these movies are dumb and all follow the same rules. She says, “Of course, I'd love for life to be like one of these movies, but it's just not realistic.” Her assistant encourages her to live in the moment instead of focusing on her list, and maybe she'll be surprised.Emily's mom collected ornaments, so when she finds out that night that they were delivered from storage to her office, she runs to the office to grab them. The box breaks, and they all fall onto the floor, including a star that says, “Whatever wish you make, it'll grant.” She looks up and sees one of those Sugarplummed movies on TV, so she wishes for a Sugarplum Christmas. Just then, the star begins to glow, and all the lights in the office start to flicker. Suddenly, Sugarplum magically appears in her office. Sugarplum is just as confused as Emily and asks Emily to help her get back to her town of Perfection. Emily, overwhelmed, says, “I'm going crazy!” and runs to leave. Sugarplum follows her, and they figure out that people can see Sugarplum but don't recognize her as Sugarplum.Sugarplum is confused by the lack of snow and explains that snow is part of the rules! Emily is shocked and asks, “The rules are real?” Sugarplum replies, “I mean, it's a book!” She pulls out the book and says, “It's pretty clear that I'm here to help you with your perfect Christmas list, and after I do that, I'll get back to my home!”The next day, Emily wakes up shocked to find that Sugarplum has brought in a full crew to decorate her house like a winter wonderland. Emily is surprised to learn that the decorators are working out of the goodness of their hearts. Luckily, she has a bag full of princess tiaras from all the princesses she's met. When Sugarplum finds out that Emily has a big-city job, she just has to tag along! She listens in as Emily has a meeting with a developer who wants to tear down a ski lodge. Sugarplum walks in and works her magic, even helping two enemies, Vic Webster and Fiona Gubelmenn, fall in love—and boy, is it steamy! Give those two a movie ASAP.The magic of Sugarplum continues. When they find out that the headphones Nina wants for Christmas are only available if you win a Christmas competition, Sugarplum absolutely crushes it.Emily is too busy to show up for Max's career event, so Sugarplum agrees to go. At first, the kids make fun of her for being weird and make fun of Max for bringing her, but then Sugarplum pulls out a magic snow globe and causes it to snow indoors. It's phenomenal. Max becomes the most popular kid in school.Emily gets great news—her newly decorated house has secured them a spot in the Harmony Channel Christmas house competition. But the magic begins to fade. The power goes out due to too many Christmas lights. Vic Webster wasn't actually into Fiona; he just wanted to trick her into giving up the ski lodge. Sugarplum gets sued for cutting down a tree and then arrested for the snow in the school. The police are baffled by Sugarplum, seeing as how she has snowflakes as fingerprints. Luckily, Emily knows the law and is able to get her released. But it's getting too real for Emily. Her son is suspended, and her daughter is mad at her for ignoring her. Sugarplum realizes the magic is fading. Emily thinks that as long as she wins the contest, they'll be okay! That'll be the amazing memory her family needs to keep the magic light burning. But things get out of control when she adds a ton more to try to ensure they win the contest. She doesn't even realize that her family is absolutely hating it. Her kids say, “We didn't ask for any of this. We want Christmas to be like it used to be.” They all leave her alone and go to the Christmas pageant like they used to do together.Sugarplum helps Emily realize that her family doesn't need a perfect Christmas—they need her. Emily pulls out of the competition and makes it in time to see her daughter perform at the pageant. But Nina is freaking out and runs away. Emily goes after her, apologizes for being the worst, and tells her that she believes in her and that she shouldn't worry about being perfect, just have fun.The performance is great, complete with some Christmas magic. Everything is as it should be, and Sugarplum says it's time for her to go. She suddenly is transported back into the TV, and the family sits down to watch a Christmas movie, realizing that their friend Sue looked a whole lot like Sugarplum on TV.

After begging for a proper education at 14, Allison had to take things into her own hands. Knowing she was about to be forced into polygamy, she went around her parents at every turn to give herself a different future. One that didn't involve reproducing with 1/2 siblings or cousins. What is the shape of a flourishing human life? Once upon a time this question came pre-answered—by culture or tribe, by religion or philosophy, by tradition or way of life—but these days, given our increasingly individualized world and its emphasis on autonomy and self-expression, given the breakdown of social trust and the increasing degree of polarization and suspicion of the other: we each have to ask and answer these questions for ourselves: What is the good life? What does it mean to live a flourishing life, and how can we actually do it? These are difficult questions on their own. They require intellectual muscles we've long let atrophy; they require reading deeply and at length; they require a willingness to listen across the chasm of disagreement. But one begins to wonder: if each of us must answer these questions for ourselves, how do we even begin to have this conversation together? The fact is, we need one another. Not just to answer them well. But to ask them well. For the coming two weeks, we'll be airing a conversation between New York Times columnist David Brooks and theologian Miroslav Volf. In this first part of the dialogue, David interviews Miroslav about his 2016 book, Flourishing: Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World. In next week's follow up, Miroslav and David discuss his 2015 book The Road to Character.Show NotesLife going well, life led well, life feeling right"Flourishing extends over long periods of time.""Does flourishing involve some eternal standard?"How can we engage in meaningful debate about religion and flourishing in a globalized world?Reading Nietzsche devotionally as a Christian theologianThe world is becoming, for ill or for good, a more religious placeWhat does religion offer the individual person today?"I don't see any reason why washing the feet of the destitute... why that wouldn't be an even more noble calling than working for Goldman Sachs."Market economy and flourishing "Religious traditions take us out of ourselves, into something transcendent."Can you be good without God?"You can be good without believing in God, but you can't be without God."If you have no connection to the transcendent realm, do you have a chance at being good?SecularizationThe state of the world: Globalization and religion are in crisis, tearing human communities and nations and cultures apart.Global capitalism letting down our hopeful expectations, because it's not delivering on the creation or distribution of wealthSin and grace in public debate—"Why did the secular sermons go away?"Life Worth Living course at Yale CollegeThe unbearable lightness of beingTwo nihilismsIs it possible to combine the pleasure of freedom and belief in God?Joy in and joy of the world: taking pleasure in the created orderThe sacraments of relationships and admiring the good of the worldPluralism and contending particular universalismsProduction NotesThis podcast featured journalist and columnist David Brooks and theologian Miroslav VolfEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Martin Chan & Nathan JowersA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/give

The ending of a significant piece of one's life — a relationship, job, stage of life, or way of thinking — may be difficult and even painful for many of us. Something that you once counted on as very important to your life is over and done.Closure means finality; a letting go of what once was. Finding closure implies a complete acceptance of what has happened and an honoring of the transition away from what's finished to something new. In other words, closure describes the ability to go beyond imposed limitations in order to find different possibilities. This episode Nikkia will discuss essential ways to find closure from the past.SHOW NOTES : Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hourFree delivery on your first order over $35https://instacart.oloiyb.net/c/2741272/1020808/7412Save yourself that trip to the market — Instacart delivers groceries in as fast as 1 hour! We all have times when we struggle to prioritise our emotional needs, and it can leave us physically and emotionally exhausted, unable to sleep well, and feeling irritable. What is an emotional backpack? Picture yourself carrying around an invisible backpack, every day. Inside that backpack are all of your life's experiences. Some of these items are positive and light, while others are negative and heavy. This episode Nikkia will discuss our feelings (all of them) are important and worthy of your attention, but some of them (especially negative emotions like self-doubt, worry, anger, frustration etc.) when kept in your body for long periods of time, can lead to unwanted results. Honor and recognize these emotions ALL emotions as part of the human experience and as such they are valuable so you keep them with you… but they do not need to own your body. You own them and you put them where you put your other belongings. Head's up: there is some explicit language in this episode, if you are sensitive to it.I discuss:Money is a resource that we all need to operateOur individual relationship to money and how we think about itSeparating how much money you have from your worth and your characterThe false dichotomy between being profitable and being of serviceHow I grew up feeling guilty about moneyMaking up for lack of money by being overly helpfulAbundance as the natural state of the earth's orderThe other things that make up Abundance besides moneyIs participating in Abundance causing harm? How it's not enough to resist a harmful systemThe problem of relegating “doing good” to non-profitUnconscious thinking holding us backThe 2 things I hear a lot in spiritual communities that I totally disagree withRedefining profitabilitySubconscious fears around impact + responsibilityAbundance is not something we manifest.ShowNotesSupport the PodcastLearn more about my new workshopsSubscribe to the homebody newsletterOnline yoga classesMary Grace's IGMary Grace's websiteSubmit a question for next solo episode --> hi@mgallerdice.comRha GoddessJoin us for a free class on Taking Care : Pillars for Creation, Circularity + Support — tools to help you design your life with more support and care built in, especially during difficult times. Is it any wonder most Americans are broke and unhappy? Maybe if we taught children in our education system basic economics and how to be more self-reliant we could change that. In this episode, Gary chats with author Julie Borowski about her new book “Nobody Knows How to Make a Pizza” that does just that… teach kids about what they really need to know for a successful life. Julie Borowski has a passion for teaching kids about economics! Previously, she was an Economics Policy Analyst at FreedomWorks, a free-market advocacy group. She is well-known for her ability to break down complex ideas in a fun and simple manner. She has appeared on Fox Business News and her writings have been published at the Washington Examiner, Foundation for Economic Education, Townhall, and more. Topics Discussed with Julie Borowski: The values that were instilled in Julie growing up that helped develop the concept for this book?Julie explains ideas such as the division of labor, the invisible hand, and spontaneous orderThe things that are missing in our current education system to help prepare kids for lifeWhat the libertarian movement is all about and why millennials are gravitating towards it Episode Resources: Get Julie's Book on AmazonCheck out Julie's WebsiteGet exclusive listener benefits when you join the Simple Life Circle here nowThe Simple Life website: https://thesimplelifenow.com

May come out of nowhere or be triggered by stressors. Symptoms include tearfulness, loss of interest, appetite and sleep changes, irritability, stomach aches, headaches. Symptoms can be physical - fatigue, diarrhea, upset stomach. Isolation, irritability, frustration, and slowed thinking can be seen in the older population. Sadness and bereavement generally do not last for more than a few months. Depression tends to be persistent and pervasive.Suicide is a side effect of depression. Warning signs include thoughts of being better off dead or not wanting to wake up. Talking to people who are depressed about suicide does not make them more likely to commit suicide. Many people experience ambivalence about suicide and want to be asked about how they are doing.Warning signs of suicide:- talking about death- statements like “people would be better off without me”- feeling like they’re a burden- feeling isolated- feeling disconnected- preparatory behaviors - giving away things, purchasing firearms, making sure will and/or insurance are in orderThe next step for friends/family/clinicians:- Ask how the affected person is doing- Make observations to the person- Using the word “suicide” is okPeople with depression need support just like people struggling with physical illness.Local support groupsNational Suicide Prevention Lifeline American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Columbia suicide severity rating scale - helps assess risk Protective factors- Valued relationships (pets, children, parents, close friends)- Futuristic thinking- EmploymentAs a friend, you can highlight protective factors and help them focus on these things. Do this without creating guilt by asking “what’s one thing that you’re living for?”Terminology - language is changing. In the past we would say “committed suicide” but just as people die of cancer, they die of/by suicide. This is more accurate and helps decrease stigma. The Columbia scale helps identify level of concern when someone is alluding to suicide. Preparatory behavior, plan for suicide, and suicidal intent predict suicide attempts.People can recover! Every emotion is temporary. Recovery is possible. If someone has had suicidal thoughts in their life, they don’t typically experience them again. People generally get better and are able to experience joy and quality of life again. People should know that they aren’t alone. Depression and anxiety are common and treatable.Treatment of depression:Non-medical includes therapy, behavioral activation: exercise, healthy eating, connecting with others.Medications include SSRI’s, SNRI’s, other antidepressants, sometimes antipsychotics- These increase hormones in our brain that create positive feelings and emotion.- Sometimes they have to be tried to find the right one. It can take a 4-6 weeks for these to reach their full effect.- Medications don’t necessarily have to be life-long.- Side effects: feeling emotionally “flat,” fatigue, nausea, weight changes, appetite changes, sexual side effects.- Avoid heavy alcohol consumption while taking antidepressants.Inpatient stays and partial hospitalization (PHP) can help individuals with suicidal intent. They help stabilize and facilitate mediation adjustments in addition to learning coping skills.Exercise can be equivalent to taking a medication to help elevate mood. This shouldn’t be done in isolation but can be a helpful part of a treatment program. Being outside, being mindful of different sensations can elevate mood as well.Cognitive behavioral therapy is a frontline approach for depression. Thoughts and behaviors are interconnected. Mindfulness, or the intention to pay attention, can be helpful in managing depression. Deep breathing can help regulate emotions.Headspace, Calm, and Breathe are good apps. Or search “Guided meditation” on Youtube.Health pearl of the week: Unplug! Technology can be enriching and helpful, but can also intrude into our lives. I could describe this podcast, and I will. But the tl;dr is this is one of my favorite conversations so far, and you’re going to enjoy it. So just go listen. Chris Hayes is, of course, the host of the MSNBC primetime show, “All In.” He’s also the author of the new book “Colony in a Nation,” as well as (the extremely prescient) Twilight of the Elites. But beyond the bio, Chris is a crazily smart and insightful thinker on US politics and society, and he's in rare form here. Among our topics:• The way Donald Trump’s success represents both the problems of elite power and elite weaknessWho even counts as an elite, anyway? How people decide what to trustThe difficulties of trying to approach politics with decency and charity in the age of TrumpWhy the key to “law and order politics” isn’t law, but orderThe underestimated power of humiliation in daily American life, and during America’s foundingHow Chris would cover Trump if he were a White House correspondentThe ways in which the media actually can be unfair to TrumpWhy the fight between Trump and the press is more a staged WWE-match than an actual warThe power of seeing politics as a zero-sum competition, even when it isn’t oneAnd much more. This conversation is dense and it’s fast and it’s interesting and it’s fun.
