Sometimes even we hit those roadblocks and we're like, best I can tell you to do is talk to your congressperson talk to an ombudsman at the agency.  But so much of it is a waiting game and I think that can be the most frustrating part for clients is they're just so sick of waiting for the bureaucracy.

In the first of a three part look at how the color line was established, maintained, and ultimately brought down, Curtis talks to Ryan Swanson. Ryan is an associate professor at the University of New Mexico, focused on sports history. He wrote the book When Baseball Went White, a history of the origins of baseball's segregation and the mechanics of its implementation. Ryan and Curtis talk about how the history of early baseball, in the 1860s and 1870s, is deeply intertwined with the politics of Reconstruction, and how the missed opportunity of the latter is reflected in the conscious choice by baseball's white leaders to construct the color line. They also discuss how segregation was indeed a conscious choice and why white officials decided that a segregated game would be easier to sell to a post-war audience. And in between they touch on the formation of the earliest Black baseball clubs, how the post-war drive to create and join community groups led to a boom in baseball teams, and how sports and politics are closely intertwined. This episode was recorded on election day of November 8, 2016. I didn't get to upload this until July 18, 2020 though. Initially, I didn't have the heart to post it and then I simply forgot to post it. But I am now working on a project that reminded me that this episode is important and must be preserved. Hope you will enjoy and have some aha moments, given what has transpired since then. Here is a link to the blogpost from that day: https://watsonimmigrationlaw.com/2016/11/05/electionandimmigrationreform/ I am excited to announce panelists for my special election day “Immigration with Tahmina” show! Two outstanding immigration experts and community leaders will be joining me for another special ‘election & immigration reform’ episode! Rich Stolz, Executive Director of One America and renowned immigration attorney Joel Paget will joining me for this special ‘election & immigration’ show on November 8th 2016 at 10am PST! Joel Paget is an immigration lawyer and senior member of the immigration group at Ryan Swanson & Cleveland, in Seattle. He has over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of immigration law, with an emphasis on business and tax issues, and he lectures and writes frequently on these topics. He is an emeritus trustee of Seattle Pacific University and served for 28 years as director and secretary of the Seattle Pacific Foundation. For many years, he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® and has been selected by that publication as a “super lawyer” each year since the inception of the award. Rich Stolz was born in Seoul, South Korea. His parents met in Korea, when his father, an American citizen, worked there in the construction field. His mother became a naturalized citizen, and Rich’s family moved to the United States when he was three. Rich grew up in Redwood City, California, where he was raised by his mother. Growing up, Rich was always conscious of his bi-racial identity, which was framed by his and his mother’s experience as new-comers to the United States. From an early age, Rich thought a good deal about what it meant to be a citizen, what it meant to be American, and the consequences of prejudice. Over the last fifteen years, Rich has worked at the Center for Community Change, a national organization based in Washington, D.C. During that time, he focused on the intersection of policy, politics and organizing across a broad spectrum of issues impacting low-income and minority communities, including jobs and income support policy, immigration policy, infrastructure investment and environmental justice. He has lived and organized in communities as diverse as Portland, Maine; Montgomery, Alabama; Tucson, Arizona; Washington, D.C.; and Seattle, Washington. Read more about Rich here. This show is guaranteed to have a riveting discussion on immigration and election with our two immigration experts! Be sure to tune into this exciting episode at 10 am PST on November 8th on Desi 1250 AM . This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, I speak with historian Ryan Swanson about his new book, The Strenuous Life: Theodore Roosevelt in the Making of the American Athlete. To say that the US is a sports-obsessed nation would be an understatement to say the least. Just consider some numbers: * In 2019 the four major sports leagues – NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL - will rake in revenues in excess of $28 billion. * Americans will illegally bet more than $150 billion on college and professional sports. * And this year about 45 million children in the US will participate in competitive sports. I could go on, but you get the point. All this obsession with sports raises an interesting question: How did it happen? Well, historical trends are always driven by multiple causes. And in the case of our obsession with sports, one of those factors was the influence of Theodore Roosevelt. While we often associate Theodore Roosevelt with military exploits in the Spanish American War, efforts to conserve the environment and natural resources, and struggles to enact progressive social legislation, Theodore Roosevelt should also be remembered for his promotion of sports and physical fitness. Ryan Swanson is an associate professor of history at the University of New Mexico. He’s the author of several books on sports history, including When Baseball Went White: Reconstruction, Reconciliation, and Dreams of a National Past Time. He’s with me today to discuss his latest work, The Strenuous Life: Theodore Roosevelt in the Making of the American Athlete. In the course of our discussion, Ryan Swanson explains: How Theodore Roosevelt used athletics to overcome childhood infirmity including asthma. How the story of Roosevelt remaking his body became a key part of his public persona as a man of zeal, courage, and accomplishment. Why Theodore Roosevelt and many other Americans in the Gilded Age grew concerned that the nation was growing soft and effeminate, and that one solution – short of a war -  was athletics. How Roosevelt used tennis during his presidency as a way to stay fit and to conduct his personal brand of politics. How Roosevelt’s love of football helped save the game when critics condemned it as dangerous and called for its abolition. And how in this era, promoters of physical fitness created the bond between education and sports that exist to this day. Plagued by such ailments as rippling asthma and grossly myopic eyesight as a child, Theodore Roosevelt was told to give up exercise completely by a doctor while he was attending Harvard. If he didn't, the doctor swore he would die of a heart attack. Still, Roosevelt pressed on. His body was his weakness, the one hill he could never fully conquer. But, oh, how he tried! Roosevelt developed a lifelong obsession with athletics that he carried with him into the highest office in the nation. As President of the United States, he boxed, practiced Ju-Jitsu, played tennis, conducted harrowing “point-to-point” walks, and invited athletes to the White House constantly. With Roosevelt in office, baseball’s first ever World Series took place, interscholastic sports began, and schools began to place a legitimate emphasis on physical education. Additionally, the NCAA formed and the United States hosted the Olympic Games for the first time. Join us for a discussion about TR’s role in fostering America’s love affair with athletics and his role in the birth of professional sports with Ryan Swanson, author of The Strenuous Life: Theodore Roosevelt and the Making of the American Athlete, in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

LAKE LIFE WKND 011 Do you know our Oskar yet? You may have seen pictures of our dog on Insta. Ryan is a Small Munsterlander breeder and member of the "KLEINER MÜNSTERLÄNDER" chapter of North America, which is actually a part of the German breeding association. Ryan is a knowledgeable advocate for these traditional hunting dogs which are not a new cross-breed but actually a pure-dog-breed with gens dating back to the 1800's. Hear the full story in our latest podcast and find more lake life on our daily updated website www.lakelifewknd.com #getoutandexplore #welovelakelife The development of the Small Munsterlander is hidden somewhere in the middle of the 19th century. After the change of the German hunting law, with the increasing number of hunters and hunting enthusiasts and the systematic cultivation of the game stock the breeding of new German Pointing Dogs began. There are reports saying that around 1870 longcoated “Wachtelhunds” (German Spaniels) were well known in the Munsterland region. These dogs were firm in pointing, they had enormous scenting abilities and were also able to retrieve. More details on the association website https://klm-gna.org/fci-breed-standard/
