On the morning of April 16th, a plume of black smoke rose from the Russian port city of Tuapse on the Black Sea coast. It stretched over a hundred kilometres out to sea. It was visible from space. NASA published the satellite image.The Tuapse Oil Refinery — a Rosneft facility, one of the ten largest in Russia, with an annual processing capacity of twelve million tons — was on fire. Ukrainian drones from the Security Service's Alpha special operations centre had struck fuel storage tanks, deepwater oil-loading arms, pipeline infrastructure, and a multifunctional radar station. The fire spread to neighbouring reservoirs and burned through the day. Ukraine's General Staff confirmed the strike. The OSINT project CyberBoroshno reported the fire had intensified. OSINTtechnical posted the satellite footage. The plan eliminated the federal tax on tips and overtime pay for linemen and factory workers, and created a new deduction for seniors relying on Social Security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it “the most pro-worker, pro-family legislation in a generation.”   several blue-state governors were refusing to reciprocate by eliminating state taxes on tips, including Govs. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.), J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.), and Jared Polis (D-Colo.). Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused them of “deliberately blocking their own residents” from the bill's benefits at the state level. Bessent made clear that states that refused to comply with the law should expect consequences. “Treasury stands ready to work with any state committed to delivering on that promise, but we will not stand idly by as this obstructionism drags down the national recovery,” he said. “This is about fairness. This is about opportunity. And this is about putting America first, starting with the families and workers who make our economy the envy of the world.” Kathy Hochul has now caved. On New Year's Day, she announced that New York will finally move to exempt service workers' tips from state income taxes on up to $25,000 in tipped income.   “Starting today, tax rates for the vast majority of lower and middle-class New Yorkers will be cut, families with children will see a sweeping increase in the child tax credit, and minimum wage workers across the state will see their wages go up. I'm kicking the new year off with a proposal of no state income tax on tips, continuing my efforts to make New York more affordable for hard working New Yorkers.” The change comes only after months of outrage from restaurant owners and service workers who accused Albany of putting politics ahead of paychecks. AI agents are moving from experimental tools to everyday enterprise workflows. Reporting live from AWS re:Invent 2025 in Las Vegas for Irish Tech News, I attended a press-only briefing titled Security and the Rise of AI Agents, where senior AWS leaders Amy Herzog, Chief Information Security Officer, Hart Rossman, Vice President in the Office of the CISO, Gea Rinehouse, Vice President of Security Services and Neha Rungta, Director of Applied Science outlined how the company intends to manage this transition. AWS is pushing ahead with autonomous agents, but only within a security model built on long-standing principles: identity, governance, compliance and clear oversight. What is an AI Agent? An AI agent is a software system that uses artificial intelligence to carry out tasks autonomously in pursuit of a specific goal. Unlike chatbots that only respond to prompts, an agent can reason, plan and take action across different steps of a workflow. It can use tools such as web services or APIs, monitor its progress and adjust its approach as conditions change. Over time, it can improve its performance based on the data and experience it gathers. This distinction matters, because the rise of agents raises new questions about accountability, access, oversight and safety. Security First AWS chief executive Matt Garman shaped much of the week's discussion. Speaking about the reality facing engineering teams, he noted: "Every customer wants their products to be secure, but you have trade-offs. Where do you spend your time? Do you improve the security of existing features, or do you ship new ones?" The briefing returned to this point several times. AWS's position is that strong design-stage security reduces the tension between improvement and innovation. Agents are seen as an opportunity to reinforce security, not dilute it. AWS Security Agent One of the major announcements at re:Invent was the preview of AWS Security Agent. The tool brings several security checks forward in the development process. It reviews designs, analyses code, gathers richer signals for incident response and performs penetration testing that reflects real system behaviour rather than generic patterns. AWS Security Agent is one of the new Frontier Agents introduced at re:Invent, a family of autonomous tools designed to handle multi-step tasks across development, security and operations. Neha Rungta described the significance of this shift. She called the Security Agent "one of these frontier AI agents, a sophisticated class of AI agents that are autonomous and scalable and can work for long periods without human intervention. Security doesn't have to be an afterthought." She added that AWS is expanding its proof-based assurance tools so teams can understand correctness without being specialists in system logic. The broader point is that verification needs to be continuous, not episodic. Guardrails for Autonomy The panel stressed that agents must operate within strict boundaries. Updated policy controls in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore allow organisations to specify what an agent can do, which systems it can reach and how its actions are logged and reviewed. Hart Rossman remarked that each major technology shift has increased the demands placed on security teams. With agents running for extended periods and across more systems, the real pressure points now are scale and speed. Guardrails are essential. The Sandbox Approach A theme repeated throughout the session was the use of sandbox environments. AWS encouraged organisations to test new agents in isolation before considering production use. This allows teams to observe long-running behaviour, confirm access paths, check escalation rules and understand how an agent reacts under different conditions. The sandbox was presented as a practical way to build confidence gradually rather than relying on assumptions. With the China spying case continuing to generate headlines, mystery and yet more uncertainty surrounding the true reason for the DPP's decision to drop charges against Chris Cash and Chris Berry under the Official Secrets Act 1911, and Double Jeopardy having been sent an anonymously leaked copy of his expert witness statement, Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC secure an exclusive interview with Professor Kerry Brown, the former UK diplomat, academic and China expert who was due to be a defence witness on behalf of Chris Berry had the case gone to trial. Mark Manglicmot, SVP of Security Services from Arctic Wolf, is sharing their research on "Cleopatra's Shadow: A Mass Exploitation Campaign Deploying a Java Backdoor Through Zero-Day Exploitation of Cleo MFT Software." Arctic Wolf Labs discovered an ongoing exploitation campaign targeting Cleo Managed File Transfer (MFT) products, beginning on December 7, 2024. Threat actors used a malicious PowerShell stager to deploy a Java-based backdoor, dubbed Cleopatra, which features in-memory file storage and cross-platform compatibility across Windows and Linux. Despite Cleo's previous patch for CVE-2024-50623, attackers appear to have leveraged an alternative access method, exploiting the software's autorun feature to execute payloads and establish persistent access. Last week, we heard about Roderick McLean who was sent to prison when police and customs officers captured a gang of eight drug smugglers off the Caithness coast. During the raid customs officer Alastair Souter was killed when he fell and was crushed between a customs cutter and the gang's boat. The drugs haul netted three tons of cannabis, valued at £10 million. McLean, the gang leader, was convicted and sentenced to 28 years in prison.This week we follow McLean in prison, but not for long as he soon escaped - was this with the help of the Security Services? - and his death in a seedy hostel in Streatham, London.
