After suffering a severe traumatic brain injury in a horrific car accident while on a trip with her family, Martha spent 20 years trying to heal emotionally, mentally, and physically.  She was simultaneously pursuing education to help better understand different facets of human health, nutrition, and communication to fuel her own recovery, and to be able to help others travelling a similar path.   Despite achieving so much, Martha was struggling to find constant motivation within herself, and to regain her former ‘self' from before her injury.  Less than three months into working with Dr. Irene, Martha feels like she has finally begun to regain her past self, and even surpass that version of herself in many ways. When I first met Victoria, she felt like her life was coming to an end after she was diagnosed with Graves Disease, an autoimmune thyroid condition.    She was overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety and fear for her future.    With the conventional methods of treating Graves, she had good reason to be afraid.    Little did she know that, less than two short months later, she would come to look at the diagnosis as a gift.    A gift that gave her the opportunity to live the life she always wanted and had always been afraid to go after.    Listen in to learn more!   Transcript:  00:00 And I think that it all really manifested in this way that I developed this thyroid condition. And after two months of working with Dr. Irene, my labs not only are practically normal, but I feel so much better all of the physical symptoms, I can really say all the physical symptoms that I had before are gone almost 100% of the time.   Dr. Irene Cop  00:32 So, thank you so much for offering to let others know about your journey. Working with me, I appreciate you so much sharing. And just wanted to start out by asking a couple of questions, if that's okay. So one of the questions I have is, so often I find, and this is human nature that we have a we reach it enough is enough moment, right? That it's not so sure, I like to call it Rock Bottom. But it's that okay, something's got to change now. So would you feel comfortable just quickly sharing what that was for you.   Victoria 01:13 Um, for me, it was probably when I felt like I couldn't function anymore. I couldn't enjoy anything, I just was in a constant state of worrying about just anything and everything things that likely would never happen. Just I would automatically go to worst case scenario for everything. And it was just not a functional way to live. And I just realized that I hadn't been happy. And I hadn't been living my life because I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop just constantly.   Dr. Irene Cop  01:48 Thank you. Thank you so much for your vulnerability and sharing. Now, before you started working with me, had you tried anything else before? What worked? What didn't work?   Victoria 01:59 Before working with you, I really tried to do a lot of stuff on my own. I would listen to like mindset podcasts and watch like conquering your anxiety, things on YouTube and stuff like that I would I have worked with therapists in the past, and nothing ever felt like it would make me it was lasting beyond the time I spent listening to it, then it never nothing ever made a real difference.   Dr. Irene Cop  02:28 So what what made you decide to work with me   Victoria 02:31 just some of the stuff that I heard when I heard you talking on Dr. Eric's podcast, some of the stuff you were saying just sounded like a really outside of the box kind of different approach, you would talk about some things like I don't know, patterns and stuff, the way we think is even just our unconscious mind. And it just made me realize that a lot of it is bigger than me and my intentions, because so much of it is deeper than that. And I wouldn't really I would only be able to scratch the surface on my own. Because it would it just went so deep, so much deeper than that.   Dr. Irene Cop  03:07 Thank you. And so how has working with me changed your life?   Victoria 03:14 I think it's been, gosh, probably almost two months. And I just feel very, I just feel like a sense of relief. I feel like not only because I feel better now in this moment, but I feel like I have tools now that I can take with me because I know realistically that stuff's gonna happen. And I feel better equipped to handle those things, because of a lot of the stuff that you've taught me things that we've gone over ways that you've helped me kind of reframe my thinking. And it's not easy to do, because I've been thinking this way for years. So I feel just very optimistic about handling things in the future and not falling back to the way that I was before.   Dr. Irene Cop  04:02 Thank you. And is there. Can you give examples, perhaps in your life of like specific things that have changed   Victoria 04:11 specifically, I feel like a big root cause of my unhappiness for a while which I think was kind of bottling up and manifesting and all these kinds of ways was that I had found myself in this life path that I never really wanted to be in to begin with because I was just programmed to just play it safe all the time. And I realized through working with Dr. Irene that I don't have to do that that I can go after something that I really wanted even if I don't completely know what that is yet. That's not the point. The point is that I don't have to play it safe in order to not be destitute, you know. So I am cutting back on hours at work so that I can discover what I really like and what I want to do. And it's such a freeing feeling, because I'm investing time in hobbies and experiences and time back. That's my actual life. And that is super meaningful.   Dr. Irene Cop  05:16 And the you say three months ago, couldn't have imagined that today, you would be giving up security and a full time job to live the life you want.   Victoria 05:28 It's funny you say that, because I had thought about it a lot. But I would always, like push it away, because I felt like it was just idealistic and just kind of just an unrealistic way to think that I could ever do something different, or just, I just made so many decisions in my life out of fear that I never thought that I could, that this would be a realistic place to find myself in. And now that I'm here, there's still that slight, that little voice in my head that sometimes tries to tell me that I'm crazy for making this decision. But I'm stronger than that now, and I've done enough work to know that that's not that's not real. And I never would have thought that I could make this decision. So really happy.   Dr. Irene Cop  06:21 Thank you. So as part of your enough is enough moment. I remember you telling me and I don't want to put words in your mouth. There was a physical reason you also reached out to me. Do you mind sharing that?   Victoria 06:35 Yeah. So I, I also developed an autoimmune disease. And I feel like a big part of my emotional unhappiness. And just like overall life dissatisfaction plays a big part in health. And I think that it all really manifested in this way that I developed this thyroid condition. And after two months of working with Dr. Irene, my labs not only are practically normal, but I feel so much better all of the physical symptoms. In this episode, Dr. Irene Cop welcomes Michael Ostrolenk, the Director of Human Relationships and Resilience at the Institute. Dr. Irene and Michael continue their discussion from the previous episode, which was entitled “Three Tools to Shift from Poor Performer to Elite Performer”. In this episode, they explore what it means to their clients to uplevel their performance.    Michael introduces the concept of “Negative 20x”, which is the opposite of the popular concept of 10x-ing your performance. Michael explains that many of his clients operate under the mindset of not feeling good enough and judge themselves harshly, which leads them to try to prove themselves to others.    Michael gives an example of a client who was always training for the next Spartan Race or Tough Mudder, not because he enjoyed them but because he was trying to prove something to his father and to himself. Michael suggests that instead of doing more of what they are already doing or even 10x-ing their performance, they should try negative 20x, which means slowing down and sitting quietly with themselves to notice what arises. Michael explains that this was the hardest race for his client, who found it uncomfortable to be with himself and not have a goal to train for. However, by doing so, he had breakthroughs and realized that his sense of not being good enough and the shame of being alive were driving him. He then stopped looking outward for validation and started looking inward to fulfill himself.   Dr. Irene and Michael discuss how many of their clients feel like they are not enough, and they explore the reasons behind this feeling, which usually stem from their family of origin. Michael explains that by examining these underlying issues, clients can have breakthroughs and start to shift from poor performers to elite performers.    They also discuss how being an elite performer does not mean being perfect or achieving all their goals but rather having resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. I have an accent. So yes.”   Why we create barriers   From 06:38:  “We feel like we're not lovable just innately and sometimes those masks are self-protective in from other reasons, you know, historic trauma historic experiences, where aren't systems stepped into a place where being vulnerable and being us wasn't a safe thing to be. And therefore we have created barriers and armor and masks to self-protect.”  “I think of it like the creation of a beautiful statue. You don't like add things in to create the statue the statue creator starts with a lump of stone and chipped away at the edges to create the shape underneath.”      Human Design   From 18:11: ..so you mentioned Human Design and whether your listeners know or don't know about it, it's kind of a system linked to astrology and all that kind of stuff. And that's where I started and the reason that I've been in this place for 20 years and I am old enough was because I found that when I was 15 my mom found it when I was 15. And so that's when I started in the world of effective personal development and looking inwards. But I couldn't talk about it to anyone, I mean, this was in 2002/2003 I couldn't talk about that to anyone. And now I'm at a party and if a friend that I'm with knows that I'm there and somebody who is interested, I get introduced as the person who learned human design with the founder. And it's like the state shift in recent years. This is very recent that we can have like energetic conversations and I can, I mean, I'm sure people are not using it entirely accurately, but I can use the word Cymatics and people understand what I'm talking about, or at least have some concept that it isn't. I'm just being weird and refuting medical stuff. I'm actually talking about, you know, a bio psycho social emotional phenomenon that we are proving in science now. And that I love I love that I can talk about things openly without feeling like I might be kind of like I don't know dismissed as a witch or whatever they used to do.   Is it witchcraft From 23:49: “So medical heartland, you know, very intense in terms of consultants charging mega fees for like, an hour to speak to them and they give you a prescription and I would not really interface with them directly, but my patients would, and so people would find me somehow, and they would come and we would do integrative work, and so much of it was, you know, I'll sit and listen to your story for an hour and a half, two hours, three hours, however long it took, and that in and of itself was therapy because they were feeling like someone was listening, someone was paying attention. And then just the interventions talking a bit about trauma, talking a bit about the nervous system, which was my major thing. I was getting massive results with complex chronic illnesses like untreatable. You will have to live with this for the rest of your life illnesses and seemingly without doing anything at all. So I wasn't even doing acupuncture or anything. But I was just humoring nervous system co-regulating, giving a little bit of supplemental support where I could but many people couldn't take supplements because they were just super sensitive, allowing them to have a different nervous system regulation. habit and practice. And they would be drastically changed in a period of very short space of time, and they'd go back to their consultants, and some were like, it just was a fake illness and you knew that nothing happened. And others were curious, others were, well hang on a second, who is this strange woman and what does she do, and is it some sort of witchcraft?”   Your own awareness is your superpower From 29:43: “I think at this moment in time, and this one message has probably changed over the course of my lifetime. But at this moment in time, it's that your own awareness is a superpower. It actually transforms everything about who you are being in each moment. If you just add awareness to the situation, and not attachment, I don't mean make meaning of the thing that you're observing but if you have this physiological sensation, we spend so much of our time time traveling, we are in the future thinking about what could happen or what might happen or what that might result in, or in the past worrying about what we've done. Michael Ostrolenk has been exploring the relationship between post-conventional living, transformational leadership, optimising health and regenerative paradigms his whole life.    His interest in human growth and personal development began when he was 9 years old and worked with psychotherapist Pat Lawson learning biofeedback, meditation and guided imagery.   The fact that Michael started his journey so young really intrigued me!    So, while we will have him on again as a guest to explore the myriad of ways his expertise can help his clients, today's focus is on the adversity and disability Michael experienced as a child.   “Our mess is so often our message” in that it can break us or make us -– and it can be the catalyst for a lifetime of learning and helping others as in Michael's case. Today, I have one of my soul sisters, Silvia Worsham. Sylvia survived a near-death experience in 2012. And she used that major life experience as a turning point to trade off her multiple award-winning career in pharmaceutical sales with Pfizer, and life as a single mom to become the world-class author, keynote speaker, and transitional mindset coach she is today. Silvia now lives her passion by helping men and women who find themselves at a crossroads to navigate change with confidence, faith, and joy.
