Screw The Commute Podcast Show Notes Episode 1167 This is turning out to be a phone tip week! I got so many darn phone tips. I did one Friday and Monday and today, and probably I might do one more this Friday just to make it a clean sweep. But I'll tell you what, if you take advantage of some of these simple tips that just nobody taught you, you're like, oh my God, that was easy. And I've been struggling with this, so you don't want to do that. Also, if you really get into it, which you should, because that phone's in your hand all day anyway. Go to screwthecommute.com/training, then hit command F or control F and put in the word phone and you'll bring in all the past phone episodes. And you Android folks. Sorry, I don't know how to do it on Android, but what I want you to do is take the tip and then just Google it on how to do it on Android, because it'll do most of the same stuff. Recorded live at Shopware Partner Day in Austin, Texas on April 22, 2026.Mark Stanley is Shopware's chief product and technology officer, where he looks after all product development. He walks through what is landing this year. Shopware's own native PaaS has just gone GA, highly opinionated and driven from the command line. An intelligence suite is in progress, bringing AI into bulk editing, CMS content generation and store data insights. And Nexus, an orchestration system for connecting Shopware instances to each other and to third party systems, goes GA at Shopware Community Day in Cologne. His hot take is data sovereignty, and business model sovereignty with it. More SaaS providers want to hoover up as much data as they can get, which suits a merchant who wants one button to push. Merchants thinking further out want to keep control of where the business model lives and where the proprietary data sits. His advice is to work out what you would not want an LLM to be able to copy in two or three years, and protect that. The moats are changing. On partners, he sees the job shifting away from shipping features and toward delivering outcomes, with tokens becoming the unit of outcome usage. On AI, he is most interested in developer tooling, where the first 80 percent of a build can happen in 20 percent of the time while the last 20 percent stays human work. And he thinks a portion of shopping stays tactile, digitally or physically, the way asking Siri to play something is a different experience from browsing Spotify. On North America he calls it an underdog story. Shopware is the Linux to the Windows and the Android to the iOS, and the work is the ground game, the same way it was done in Europe fifteen years ago. Bring a case of beer, go on the road, get people to join the ride.Shopware Community Day runs June 10 in Cologne. Shoptoberfest runs September 14 and 15 in Nashville.Learn more about our at-event interviews at talk-commerce.com/events.

Kick off Mac Geek Gab 1157 with a rapid-fire round of Quick Tips: find the new Siri option hiding in your Camera app, tame Archive Utility’s settings to streamline your workflow, and turn your scanner and printer into a DIY copier over FTP. You’ll also learn where macOS quietly stashes your FileVault recovery key (hint: check Passwords) and how to wrangle your files so AI can actually help you, including a listener who let AI sort an entire TV library and another who put Claude Cowork to work as his personal Mac updater. Then it’s time for Apple’s big hardware drop: the M6 and M5 Ultra arrive in a new Mac mini and Mac Studio, with 2.5-gig Ethernet as the buried lede. Your two geeks and a pilot break down what’s worth your money, tackle Apple’s storage pricing problem with Thunderbolt and USB alternatives that won’t drain your wallet, and answer whether you can move your home folder to an external drive to dodge Apple’s SSD tax (spoiler: you can, and maybe it’s time we start endorsing this?). Stick around for Cool Stuff Found: a robot mower that behaves even without fences, a smarter way to peek inside archives, and a slick DMG utility. Press play, get your answers before your gear gets you… and whatever you do, Don’t Get Caught! 00:00:00 Mac Geek Gab 1157 for Monday, August 31st, 2026 August 31st: World Distance Learning Day MGG Monthly Giveaway – Win a license to Yoink, Screenfloat, Transloader, or DeskMat from Eternal Storms The MGG Merch Store is Live! Waziri Garuba, creator of G.R.I.O.T and CEO of HarlemLabs, talks about how he was inspired by the limitations of Siri and where the name for his custom AI persona, G.R.I.O.T, comes from. He  integrates several platforms including n8n.io, 11 Labs, Vercel, and it can be integrated with an LLM of choice, including Claude. The system operates using an agentic workflow where a central brain assesses inputs via webhooks. Incoming queries are classified into four categories: direct, tools, complex, or schedule-based to determine the appropriate routing. He explains how his agent can talk to the platforms. The First Automation Waziri describes how he built his first automation which was an auto email response maker designed to monitor Gmail every minute. The agent reviews unread messages and drafts responses in his specific writing style while logging actions in a spreadsheet. His current evolved system uses a contact map to identify known contacts and manages inbox organization through classification and labeling. Tracking Health and Fitness Waziri talks about how he uses G.R.I.O.T in his personal life. He calls it G.R.I.O.T in the Garage. Waziri utilizes a Notion database to track health reports and personal fitness goals. The G.R.I.O.T agent can access this data to design customized workouts and automatically add them to his calendar. He demonstrates how the agent can interact with his calendar to move appointments or set reminders based on terminal tasks. The Technical Landscape Waziri explains how G.R.I.O.T can integrate with many tools and finds the best tool for the job. The technical landscape consists of specialized sub-agents for platforms like Airtable, Google Drive, Monday, and Notion. These agents act as "appendages" that handle specific tasks such as searching files or managing relational databases. Waziri utilizes Tavily, an AI-driven search tool used by developers. It operates like Perplexity to help the agents find real-time information. Mobile Accessibility Waziri  interacts with G.R.I.O.T through Telegram, allowing him to send voice memos while on the go at the gym or traveling. This mobile interface enables him to delegate research, schedule follow-ups, or draft emails using simple spoken commands. He prefers Telegram over other messaging apps because it offers easier integration with n8n for building custom workflows. He explains how it helps him manage his emails, both incoming and backlog, and newsletters. The Finance Tools A dedicated suite of finance tools helps Waziri manage debt, income tracking, and expense reporting through QuickBooks and Google Sheets. The system implements a behavioral mechanism to automate saving ten percent of incoming funds into a separate account. One specific agent provides regular reports on interest rates for student loans and credit cards to help prioritize debt repayment strategies. Professional Services Waziri serves CEOs and high-level executives by helping them map out their operational needs before implementing AI tech stacks. He offers an eight-week course called the Operators Map at theoperatorsmap.com to teach governance and automation design. His business engagements focus on helping operators transition from manual processes to efficient, automated systems through HarlemLabs.com.

This episode with Mo Gawdat originally went out in 2019, but its message feels as relevant as ever. We're re-releasing it to celebrate the 500th episode of How to Fail. Just occasionally, you meet someone who changes the way you think about the world. That's what happened when Elizabeth met Mo Gawdat, former Chief Business Officer at Google X, who spent years trying to solve a problem that seemed impossible to quantify: how can one individual be happy? After 12 years of research, Gawdat developed an algorithm for happiness: happiness is greater than or equal to your perception of the events in your life, minus your expectations of how life should be. He wrote about it in his international bestseller Solve for Happy. But that algorithm was put to the ultimate test when his beloved 21-year-old son, Ali, died in tragic circumstances. Mo joins me to talk about grief and depression, happiness as a form of fitness, coping with break-ups, the isolating effects of social media, why life is like a computer game, the illusion of time - and why we should always be polite to Siri. Carolina reflects on the experiences that first drew her to international affairs, her fascination with diplomacy, and the sense of purpose she found working in some of the world's most challenging environments.Carolina shares her memories of helping rebuild East Timor following its independence, the relationships she formed there, and meeting her partner, Sergio Vieira de Mello. She describes their shared commitment to peacebuilding and public service, and the optimism that sustained them through complex international missions. We also talk about the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, in which Sergio and 21 of Carolina's colleagues were killed, and the long journey that followed. Carolina reflects with remarkable honesty on grief, rebuilding a life after profound loss, finding meaning through Viktor Frankl's work, and carrying Sergio's legacy forward through mentorship and service.Recorded on 12 April 2022, with new introduction recorded in July 2026.Instagram: @at.the.coalfaceConnect with Carolina on Instagram @carolina.larriera. Command+Comma jumps you straight into any well-coded Mac app’s settings, no menu-hunting required, and Option+Return reveals the formula in any Numbers cell (Command+Return puts the result back). If your cross-platform Logitech keyboard has its Command and Option keys backwards, hold Fn+Shift+O for three seconds to flip the firmware into Mac mode — Fn+Shift+P sends it back to PC. While you’re at it, download the PDF manual for every new piece of gear today and stash it in Books so it syncs everywhere, because that manual won’t be on the manufacturer’s site three years from now. You’ll also hear why Siri AI in the iOS 27 betas is genuinely iterative: you can follow up, edit, and append without starting over. Plus the best quick tip anyone’s sent in: go listen to the old episodes. Then you’re into your questions. Skipping Tahoe on your way to Golden Gate? You pay the re-indexing tax either way, so make the one jump instead of two. You’ll get the cable-bag answer (mesh zipper pouches you can see through, plus a slim organizer case that slides in next to your laptop), the 4K travel monitor that earns its space, and how one listener had Claude Cowork build an exhaustive Mac migration checklist. You’ll hear why consolidating into a single password manager makes your next nuke-and-pave dramatically less painful, and whether an app that vets every link before you click it could actually exist, because knowing where a link really goes is how you Don’t Get Caught. Plus: build and sideload your own single-use iOS apps for free with your Xcode personal team (AltStore and Sideloadly make it stick), why Messages keeps splitting your family group thread and what actually works, and a long-overdue robot mower update covering stereo vision versus LiDAR, all-wheel drive, and what your yard size really costs you. 00:00:00 Mac Geek Gab 1155 for Monday, August 17th, 2026 August 17th: Black Cat Appreciation Day MGG Monthly Giveaway – Win a license to Yoink, Screenfloat, Transloader, or DeskMat from Eternal Storms The MGG Merch Store is Live! Andrew O'Hara flies solo this week and covers a packed smart home update with new Apple Home and iOS 27 details, notable product launches from Govee, Eufy, Abode, Sonos, Lutron, SwitchBot, PetLibro, Matic, Dashboard, and Mophie. The episode is especially useful if you care about how Apple Intelligence is being tied to iCloud tiers, or you want to see which new devices are actually doing something meaningfully different. In this episode, Andrew breaks down the newest Apple Home camera summary limits, explains why Govee's updated light strip matters for Matter users, and highlights Eufy's standout solar-powered wall light camera. He also dives into a new AI assistant in SwitchBot, a troubling PetLibro server outage, and Matic's unusually smart vacuum controls that let you point and say what to clean.Key topicsAndrew is flying solo this week after traveling, and he sets up a news-heavy episode focused on smart home updates and reviews.iOS 27 Developer Beta 5 adds a new Apple Home camera summary explainer in Home settings, showing that Apple Intelligence features are being tied to iCloud plan tiers.Apple Home now appears to limit summarized video cameras based on the iCloud tier, separate from HomeKit Secure Video camera limits.Govee's new Strip Light 2 moves from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi and adds Matter over Wi-Fi, making it much more relevant for Apple Home users. The strip also gets updated LumiBlend tech, improved white light reproduction, cut-to-length support, protective coating, and multiple sizes from about 10 feet to 65.6 feet.Eufy's Solar Wall Light Cam S4 is the standout product of the week for Andrew, combining a 4K camera, wall sconce lighting, solar charging, a 10,000 mAh battery, and millimeter-wave motion sensing.Andrew emphasizes why Eufy's radar-based motion detection is a big upgrade over basic PIR or pixel-difference motion sensing.Abode adds two outdoor-friendly sensors: an outdoor contact sensor with weather resistance and a garage tilt sensor for doors, sheds, and hatches.Sonos and Lutron expand their integration so Sonos voice control can operate Lutron Caseta lights, shades, and plugs, while a Pico remote can control Sonos playback.SwitchBot's beta AI assistant, KATA, can control devices across rooms, check battery status, guide setup, and even create automations through natural language.PetLibro had server issues that disrupted some pet feeders, fountains, and litter boxes, raising Andrew's recurring concern about cloud dependence in smart home gear.Matic unveils Matic Cues, a major AI-driven update for its vacuum that lets users speak naturally, point to messes, and command the robot to clean specific spots.Andrew also reviews a new Dashboard app for Apple Home and RTSP cameras that focuses on a clean dashboard-first experience. The episode closes with the Mophie 4-in-1 charging stand, which adds a hidden retractable USB-C cable and manages to stay compact without active cooling.Send me your smart home questions and recommendations with the hashtag #SmartHomeInsider.
