And I don't consider myself a ‘gear head' whatsoever – I actually find that whole culture rather abhorrent – all of which makes this post very unusual. On April 24th 2020, Apple released the second-generation iPhone SE. In comparison to its current flagship models, the iPhone SE is a downgrade in handset design, sporting the same shell as the iPhone 8 – Touch ID and all – but is nearly identical computing-wise, running on the same A13 chip that's in the iPhone 11 Pro. I've been using the iPhone SE alongside my iPhone XR for a week now and have come to believe this is one of the most significant events in the consumer electronics industry to date. As Nadim Kobeissi writes: The iPhone SE signals a pivotal shift that the industry can't back away from. The foremost producer of ‘luxury' smartphones is doubling down on putting its latest and greatest processor, camera, operating system (and almost its display) into a form factor that can sell for under $400 without going cheap on the body or on material quality He's right. The most powerful chip in a smartphone – an entire pocket computer in a tiny form factor – for a third of the cost of Apple's flagship and computationally identical model? I'm not sure who snuck that past the accountants at Cupertino! There are already leaks online of what the next iPhone might look like, but it won't matter. Unless it can do something tremendously radical, something no other smartphone dared do before, it will exist only for the status-obsessed gear monkeys. I wanted a phone that would encourage me to use it less without being functionally useless. I purchased the iPhone SE with the intention of making it a ‘private device' to run alongside my XR. Something I'd encrypt and lock-down to write peacefully on, without social media or calls. A ‘work phone' with the misconception that nothing much will work on it at all. I was wrong! This phone is brilliant. I never loved the all-screen design of Apple's latest devices and found the size to be horrendously obnoxious, so much so that flicking between my SE and XR made the latter very uncomfortable. Using my XR after using the SE makes the XR look like the sort of phone you'd give your grandmother: massive buttons and a screen so large that she wouldn't need glasses to read it. The iPhone SE is deft in comparison. This is the first easily-pocketable phone on the smartphone market in over three years. I barely know I'm carrying it which is exactly what I want from a phone: something that works for me but gets out of the way. [According to Wikipedia at the time I write this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_SE_(2nd_generation): The second generation of the iPhone SE was among the smallest mainstream in-production smartphones at the time of its release. Sure, there are compromises. The SE battery life is laughable in comparison to the XR but the XR did sport the largest battery Apple had made when it was released in 2018. If it bothers you as much as it did me, the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case fits the SE perfectly, but you lose its wireless charging capabilities. In every other area, the iPhone SE excels. Even in places where Apple has tried to save costs, they've done so in a way that doesn't affect the usability of the device. Face ID is gone and the screen is LCD but it has such a high pixel ratio that I can't really notice much difference between that and my XR. The SE is what I'm going to stick with for that time before reassessing what's on the market. By then, I hope we see a departure from tablets-as-phones (I refuse to call them ‘phablets') and toward what phones were always intended to be: small and portable. All of this reminds me of an essay penned in 1988 by poet and environmentalist Wendell Berry titled ‘Why I Am Not Going to Buy a Computer'. Now aged 85, Wendell's still not got one, nor a smartphone. Toward the end of the essay, he lists ‘nine standards for technological innovation', all of which are still pertinent today. His first three points are as follows: The new tool should be cheaper than the one it replaces. It should be at least as small in scale as the one it replaces. It should do work that is clearly and demonstrably better than the one it replaces. Wendell might like the SE.

They’re basically just upgrading the XS, Tennis Match, and XR. But get this, the high-end iPhone 11, probably called the iPhone 11 Max, will feature a triple rear camera system. Triple! The iPhone 5.8-inch iPhone 11 will stick with a dual lens system. The successor to the iPhone XR will have an LCD screen panel, and will be upgraded to a dual-camera system. The report says that Apple may drop the LCD option in 2020, moving to an OLED only lineup late next year. It also alludes to the removal of the pressure sensitive component that enables 3D Touch, in order to reduce components costs. It doesn’t say that 3D Touch is certainly going away necessarily as the feature may be achieved through other hardware changes. Apple unleashes new Smart Battery Cases for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR Apple’s new Smart Battery Cases are now available iPhone XS, XS Max and XR Along with adding some extra protection to your device, Apple’s new cases promise to deliver 37 hours more hours of talk time, Internet use up to 20 hours The cases also support wireless charging. Only cost a mere $129! And it seems that the XS case will work with the iPhone X, but it does block some of the mics and speakers since it’s not made to fit the X Nike kills shoelaces with new iPhone-controlled sneakers The back to the future shoes you’ve always wanted are finally a reality. Nike’s new Adapt BB self-lacing shoes pack wireless connectivity, and a custom motor and gear train, to give athletes a perfect fit without having to fuss with retying their laces. The Adapt BB shoes can be tightened and loosened using the buttons on the side of the shoe or via an app (both iOS and Android). This could be really valuable to basketball players, whose feet can expand half a size during the rigors of a game. Getting a taste of the future won’t come cheap. Nike will charge $350 for a pair of Adapt BBs when they launch next month. Netflix hikes prices for U.S. subscribers Netflix has confirmed another price hike for subscribers in the United States — its biggest increase since it launched 12 years ago. The most affordable Netflix plan, which was priced at $8 a month, now costs $9 a month. The most popular plan has risen from $11 a month to $13 a month. The premium plan that offers 4K content is has gone from $14 a month to $16 a month. The new prices will be applied to new Netflix subscribers immediately, while existing customers will see the increase during the next three months It costs a lost of money to make that content. Netflix spent a staggering $3 billion last year, and expects to do so again in 2019. In an effort to cut down on its borrowing, it will charge more for its service. Our Under Review Picks Tik Tok is the wild west of social media They’re making a sequel to last year’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle reboot Variety reports that Danny Glover is joining the cast of the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel in a role that is being kept under wraps, much like the still-secret storyline. Charcutería: The Soul of Spain This news is on the heels that Danny Devito is onboard The original cast, director, and script writers are also all on board They’re making Ghostbusters 3. It will continue the story from Ghostbuster’s 2 The movie will be directed by Jason Reitman, who is the filmmaker son of Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the original 1984 comedic hit "Ghostbusters" with Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. In an interview with EW.com, Reitman said he would divert from director Paul Feig's 2016 reboot of "Ghostbusters" that featured an all-women cast that included Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones. Reitman will go back to the original universe his father created in the present day story. AirPower was announced alongside the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X at Apple’s September event… in 2017. It was a preview, not a release, and Apple said it would only be available in 2018. Since then, the iPhone X has come and gone and another September event along with it. Now it’s November 2018 — late November — and AirPower is still nowhere to be found. Apple has launched products in December before. AirPods, of course, in 2016, and the Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6s in 2015. But it’s certainly not the norm. HomePod, which was announced at WWDC in June of 2017 as coming later that year, then delayed early February 2018 after AirPlay 2 proved more challenging to nail down than initially expected. If a December launch isn’t in the cards for AirPower, and the lack of noise leading up to the last month of the year makes that seem increasingly likely, than early next year, be it February or March is the next likely window.
