How did 15 Connecticut high school students find themselves in French World War 1 trenches and what were they doing there? Find out in today's episode! This podcast is part of our “20 for 20: Innovation in Connecticut History” series, and we'd like your feedback. Take our 5-minute survey and get a free copy of Connecticut Explored magazine. You'll find the survey link below. Thank you! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CTWW1   My guests for this episode are Christine Pittsley, Special Projects Director for the Connecticut State Library and Katy Hitson, a Connecticut student who participated in the trench restoration in France when she was in high school. Pittsley has directed several award-winning World War 1 programs, including the Digging Into History trench restoration project and the Remembering World War One Digitization program, and has been recognized as a leader in the nation's WW1 commemorative efforts.   When the United States entered Europe's Great War, World War 1, in 1917, Connecticut manufacturers provided the military with munitions, clothing, and other goods.  In addition to the men and women who worked on the home front, roughly 63,000 state residents served in the US or Allied forces.  For those at the front lines in France, life was rough. As the war stalled at the battlefront, men dug huge earthen defensive trenches that became their battlefield homes. They experienced gas attacks, heard nonstop artillery barrages and watched the daily aerial battles. Connecticut men also sheltered in limestone caves thirty feet below the ground level and encompassing over 100 acres with rooms and tunnels.     For more information about the CT State Library's project, go to https://ctinworldwar1.org/   To read more about Connecticut in WW1, go to these Connecticut Explored issues and stories:   https://www.ctexplored.org/spring-2017/   https://www.ctexplored.org/parallel-lives-segregated-connecticut-in-world-war-i/   https://www.ctexplored.org/world-war-i-the-cave-dwellers-life/   ---------------------------------------------------------------- Join Connecticut Explored's 20th anniversary celebration by subscribing  at https://www.ctexplored.org/subscribe/   This episode of Grating the Nutmeg was produced by Mary Donohue and engineered by Patrick O'Sullivan of High Wattage Media. www.highwattagemedia.com/   Donohue has documented the built environment and pop culture for over 30 years. Author and historian Rachel Yarnell Thompson joins Tim to talk about the man with a plan, George Marshall, whose “Marshall Plan” reshaped Europe and the world after World War Two. After playing important military roles in winning both World War One and World War Two, he was tapped for what would become his most well-recognized legacy, the rebuilding of the free world. Rachel is the author of: Marshall—A Statesman Shaped in the Crucible of War. This Encore Episode was first released on November 11, 2019. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_George_Marshall.mp3 George C. Marshall was named the Army chief of staff in Washington on the day that Nazi tanks rolled through Poland on their way to near complete domination of Eastern and Western Europe. He was the first five-star general in American history. From that day forward, he transformed the American military into a level of power never before seen. He oversaw the country's and the allies' military strategy that led to unconditional victories in Europe and in the Pacific. In addition to Europe and the Pacific, he oversaw military operations in China and the Mediterranean. He had the respect of world leaders that included President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, and of course throughout all of the armed forces. He was credited with finding the generals who would win the war, including generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and George Patton. He was one of the architects of the D-Day invasion and was set to command the invasion of Normandy, when FDR decided to keep General Marshall in Washington. FDR said to his general, “I didn't feel that I could sleep at ease if you were out of Washington.” George Marshall's accomplishments are many. Once the war ended, he retired from the military, and in one day was called upon by President Harry Truman to address China's civil war as the president's special envoy. President Truman tapped Marshall to serve as his Secretary of State, dealing with the Berlin Blockade, and then to develop and implement the European Recovery Program, better known as the Marshall Plan. Along the way, George Marshall would become president of the American Red Cross, and President Truman's Secretary of Defense during the Korean War. He earned the Nobel Peace Prize. George Marshall was a study in contrasts. He was the commander of the most powerful military the world, yet he was seen as a man of quiet, even humble confidence in his own ideas. He operated in a highly political environment with the world's leading politicians, yet he refused to become political. Often, when he was asked of his own party affiliation, he said he was an Episcopalian. In the process, he won the respect, admiration and the trust of both Democrat and Republican leaders. Great Streets: Safe, Walkable, Bikable, Equitable and Sociable Guest Martina Haggerty, Special Projects Director at the City of Providence Department of Planning and Development The City of Providence's Great Streets initiative is an established framework for public-space improvements developed to ensure that every street safely supports active transportation. The CDC defines active transportation as “any self-propelled, human-powered mode of transportation, such as walking or bicycling.” The key to the Great Streets plan is providing transportation options that are reliable, convenient, affordable and equitable. Covering 13 percent of the city's land area, the streets comprise the city's greatest shared asset. The city's vision is largely comprised of an Urban Trail Network with off-road separated paths, separated on-road trails, low-stress neighborhood greenways, and other improvements, designed to make Providence more livable and to revitalize and connect its 25 neighborhoods with a safe transportation system that serves everyone. The transportation sector in Rhode Island accounts for nearly 40 percent of the state’s greenhouse-gas emission. Furthermore, transportation is the second largest household expense after housing.  The more easily we can walk, bike and access public transportation, the more readily we can shift away from our current car-dominated, fossil-fuel-reliant culture and save some money. This episode begins with a city story walk, that leads into a discussion about how to rethink and redesign streets for the 21st century and why this is important. Cornell Belcher is the President of Brilliant Corners Research and Strategies. He joins Doug Thornell to discuss several topics ranging from the 2020 election to race and politics. They touch on the messaging around defunding the police and how that will translate at the polls.Cornell Belcher is President of Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies, a published author (A Black Man in the White House), political contributor to NBC/MSNBC, and one of the premier strategists in national progressive politics as well as in the rebranding of corporate America. Cornell served as Pollster for the DNC under Chairman Howard Dean making him the first minority to lead in that role for either national Party. He also served on the polling team for both groundbreaking Obama presidential campaigns. Over the years, Cornell has worked with both Senate and House Democrats as Senior Political Advisor to the DSCC in the 2002 cycle and Special Projects Director for the DCCC in the 2000 cycle. Cornell also served as Women VOTE! Coordinator for EMILY's List in the 1998 cycle, helping to put together communication and GOTV operations targeting women voters all over the country.Cornell is an experienced hand at campaign politics and has years of expertise in quantitative and qualitative research, message development, and product and behavioral insight. Founding brilliant corners in 2002, he is considered the vanguard for demographic trends among the emerging younger and browner America. In 2008 and 2012, youth and minority voters over-indexed and changed the face of the electorate helping not only President Obama, but progressive candidates and issues up and down the ballot; indeed in 2012 African American voter turnout surpassed that of whites for the first time in history.  Both historic watershed moments that greatly depended on Cornell's nonconformist contributing work. As the pollster for the Democratic National Committee, he was able to ignore beltway criticisms and take the national Party's research into previously unchartered directions, exploring how best to challenge Republicans' strengths among voters in supposedly untouchable "red states," particularly "faith" or "values first" voters. Under Governor Dean's leadership, Cornell helped to construct a savvy framework for the visionary 50 State Strategy that expanded the Democratic footprint on the electoral map and ultimately produced a Democratic realignment. Asked about Cornell's role, Governor Dean was quoted in the Washington Post as saying that the research conducted by brilliant corners for the DNC was "the best poll [he'd] seen in ten years."

On this edition of the Seven Ages Audio Journal, after news pertaining to the surprising results of DNA studies in West Africa and a Japanese experiment in search of answers about ancient seafaring, we turn our attention to one of the greatest controversies in modern science that unites the fields of archaeology, geology, and climate science: the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. Joining us to discuss it are two leading experts on the topic--a geoarchaeologist and a planetary scientist--who offer their perspectives on the latest developments in support of this hotly debated theory. Christopher R. Moore, PhD, is a geoarchaeologist and Special Projects Director with the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program. His research interests include site formation processes and geochronology of stratified sites in the southeastern Coastal Plain, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, early hunter-gatherer adaptations, lithic technology, and immunological blood residue analysis of stone tools. Chris is also the lead researcher of the White Pond Human Paleoecology Project and has authored and coauthored numerous papers on the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis including one documenting the presence of widespread Platinum anomalies at the Younger Dryas Boundary (YDB) as well as a recent paper on White Pond (near Elgin, SC) supporting the YD impact hypothesis. Malcolm Lecompte is a planetary scientist and remote sensing specialist. He holds a B.S. with Honors in Physics from the University of Wyoming and an MS in Astro-geophysics from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Astrophysical, Planetary and Atmospheric Sciences in 1984. Lecompte also became affiliated with the Naval Aviation reserve in 1980, and before ending his military flight career in 1991, compiled over 1,000 hours of military aircrew and private pilot time, officially retiring from the Naval Reserve as a Commander in 1998 after 23 years of active service. From 2004 until 2009, after a post-doctoral appointment at the Harvard College Observatory and Smithsonian Center Astrophysics (as well as a period managing DoD sponsored R&D projects), Lecompte held a faculty position as an Associate Professor and Research Director at Elizabeth City State University's Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research. Now retired, LeCompte has since devoted himself to investigating earth impacts during the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs by asteroid and comets. Rachel is the author of: Marshall—A Statesman Shaped in the Crucible of War. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Marshall_Plan_Final_auphonic.mp3 George C. This episode is with Kenny Lao, who worked with the masterminds behind Nobu, created his own restaurant empire Rickshaw Dumplings, and now brings it all together in his new project, Culinary Task Force, a consulting service to help bring new restaurant concepts to life. We have a couple of episodes on My Food Job Rocks that deal with building restaurants so I asked Kenny advice on how to build one. Especially in the New York scene. Kenny did not disappoint telling me the intricate and honest details on creating a restaurant in the city. We go over a lot of things in what you might not actually realize goes into a successful restaurant including the importance of foot traffic, to finding an architecture, to having (what Kenny calls) a full bench. Kenny and I also talk about some soft skills like how to improve your stress levels, or how to persistent in getting a call with someone important. We also, of course, talk about Chinese food in great detail, especially how to make a good dumpling. About Kenny As the Principal of Culinary Task Force Kenny’s culinary insights work is informed by his active involvement in creating forward thinking, sustainable F+B Concepts. Prior to Culinary Task Force, Kenny was the Founder and Managing Operator of New York based Rickshaw Dumplings, an Asian fast-casual restaurant group with 3 stores, one shipping container in Times Square, a fleet of 4 mobile trucks and a retail grocery product range for over a decade winning awards and recognitions in publications such as Nations Restaurant News, New York Magazine, New York Times, Monocle and Restaurant Hospitality Magazine. This indicates traffic is good. What do you do now?: I’m a hospitality consultant, The principal of Culinary Taskforce Culinary Taskforce is a collection of all of the services and skills to run a new concept and grow a successful one The landscape today is now about the client’s concept and finds the chef that fits that concept. In the past, that wasn’t the case How did you start in the restaurant business?: My parents loved dining out. My father used to ask me to order from the adult’s menu. I studied international relations. After a few non-restaurant stints, I found out about this new restaurant group at Nobu and I was very very aggressive trying to get Drew (the owner) to call. 411: ask for people’s numbers. I got Drew’s mother instead. Drew’s mother told Kenny that her mother wanted to him, and that’s how the relationship started Became their pro-bono project manager I was doing 3 unique concepts every year Starwood During that time, I got an MBA (you can work while getting your MBA by the way) I was priced out after getting an MBA. So I started Rickshaw Dumplings, a fast-casual dumpling place We grew the brand to 4 locations and 4 food trucks in a decade Anita Lo Any advice from starting a restaurant?: Get referrals, get referrals, get referrals. Get an architect and engineer who is on board with this. You never want to pay rent on a property you’re not opened on yet Would you pay for a premium price to build a restaurant?: I wouldn’t hire the same architect twice. You need to figure out what’s a good fit with your architecture What’s the indicator of starting another restaurant?: Has to be profitable. I mean really has money. You also need a deep bench. It’s ok to have one restaurant, but people are super important. People are very hard to scale and you need to scale things before you start another restaurant Deep bench: a foundational leadership team How much is a restaurant in New York?: I’ve seen $90k restaurant and I;ve seen $5 million restaurants. What do you find unique about New York’s food scene?: I’m excited to see a lot of new ethnic foods. I think it will be a marketplace for experimentation. I’m excited to see what’s coming in from out of the country. I think large conglomerates, families, and entrepreneurs are starting things. Los Angeles is actually is a really exciting a food city. LA and New York is different because LA takes time to plan, New York is easy access so the reward is greater than LA. Omakase What’s one thing in the food industry you’d like to know more about?: I want to see what Gen Z is eating. What do you know now about it?: Gen Z grew up snacking. I predict that Bodegas will expand Spiderman Homecoming Bodega Vending machines Café X What’s your favorite quote?: There’s no good decisions, there’s only ways to make decisions good Favorite Kitchen Item: Fish Spatula. Some people like thin skins and thick skins. You need a very well-feel dumpling. It’s the balance of flavor from the dipping sauce to the filling. It’s a balance between those two flavors. There’s nothing as good as a home made handwrapped dumpling Dim Sum is southern Northern Chinese is steamed, bready and wheaty Southern: more egg yolks, spices, gravy sauces (Cantonese) Hand pulled noodle: You don’t add anything, but you need the right temperature Any advice for anyone who wants to start a restaurant?: Work at a restaurant. Find us on Stitcher You can also read the transcript below: Small Biz Stories is brought to you by Constant Contact. Jason: I could feel it happening to my mind, to myself, to my self-image, to my vision for my future that I wanted to continue. I wanted to have an art show in that gallery every weekend for the rest of my life, because it felt that good. And that’s why we do it, because it makes that effort worth something. Dave: If you own a small business, you're probably familiar with this feeling. There's a moment when all the hard work and sacrifice you've put into something finally pays off. You feel a true sense of accomplishment. As any small business owner can tell you, you'll need hard work, focus, and discipline to take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. Today, Jason Talbot, co-founder of Artists for Humanity, shares how a strong work ethic has the power to transform your idea, self-image, and community. More than fifty percent of small businesses fail within the first five years. These are the stories of those who beat the odds. My name is Dave Charest and I'll be your host as we share the stories of some of the bravest people you'll ever meet, small business owners. You'll hear how they got started, their biggest challenges, and their dreams for the future. Dave: Artists for Humanity is a nonprofit that started off with an idea: to address the lack of arts experiences in Boston's Public schools by employing urban teens to provide creative services to clients within the local business community. Jason has been involved in this program since the beginning — first as a student of the program, and today as a co-founder and Special Projects Director for the organization. Dave: So I guess let’s look at the history starting there. You’re in a unique position where that you’re kind of a product of the program, I guess, before it was a program, right? Jason: Yeah, yeah. Dave: Tell us a little bit about how that all started. Jason: Well, Artists for Humanity, it started in a real organic way. Susan Rodgerson, our executive director, saw what was going on in the Boston Public School System. Saw art programs being slashed and really took it upon herself in a real entrepreneurial way to make sure the young people got the enrichment that art brings to their lives. And she wanted to make sure that there was art in schools, that kids had that experience. And so she had this plan to paint a big, giant painting with a bunch of kids and sell it off to a corporation for lobby art to then fund the next painting.
