Brigid Delaney was at a unique point in her life and found herself looking for answers around life's deepest questions: What does it mean to be a good person? How do we stop letting the things out of our control rule our emotions? Can our anger be tamed? After learning more about Stoicism, Brigid decided to let the ancient wisdom from Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca guide her decisions for a year. While in Australia on tour, Ryan had the chance to meet Brigid in person and talk with her about why Stoicism resonated with her, how to successfully apply Stoicism to modern problems, and the common misconceptions around Stoicism being exclusively for men. To learn more about Brigid's experience, check out her book Reasons Not to Worry: How to Be Stoic in Chaotic Times. Brigid Delaney is the author of Reasons Not to Worry: How to Be Stoic in Chaotic Times and Wellmania: Extreme Misadventures in the Search for Wellness. Be sure to check out the Netflix series Brigid co-create, inspired by her book Wellmania!

Brigid Delaney is currently a political speechwriter. She was a journalist for The Guardian, and wrote popular weekly column, 'Brigid Delaney's Diary',' which we little a little about in this interview. She wrote that column for eight years. It is so good. Like unbelievably and consistently funny, it's stood the test of time. Read the cheese story and the mansion story mentioned in the episode—they're incredible! Brigid also wrote Wellmania, the book that the Netflix series is based. But the main thing that Katherine and Brigid talk a lot in this interview about is stoicism, which is the focus of her most recent book, Reasons Not to Worry. Katherine has wanted to speak to Brigid about stoicism for a long time. Brigid wrote an article about stoicism when COVID first started, and it felt like it offered a sort of solace that wasn't anywhere else. The concepts are so useful, particularly for creatives and people putting art/writing into the world. This week Dan and Chris discuss the last few weeks of TV News, including the Among Us cast, Chance Perdomo's tragic passing, Disney's proxy battle, Welcome to Wrexham's delay and the inexplicable decision to develop ANOTHER Heroes reboot. Plus we go down under for an Australia centric episode where we review No Activity, Wellmania, and the absolute masterpiece that is Bluey.
We've got someone on the show this week who makes it her business to show us exactly how wonderful we as women are–just as we are! She is the queen of keeping it real, a hilariously honest actress, standup comedian, and the Instagram star who has become our go-to for a belly laugh when the world's expectations just seem a tad too polished–it's Celeste Barber! If you haven't seen Celeste on her Instagram account, get on over there and join the nearly 10 million people who are clamoring for her content each week (and if you have any doubt, she won the “Funniest Lady on Instagram Award” back in 2017). She's also a successful standup comedian who sold out three seasons of her “Challenge Accepted” Tour in the US, and has a Netflix Special (“Fine, Thanks”) and a dramatic comedy series that we just love called “Wellmania.” Jen and Celeste get into it about: The riotous juggle Celeste manages by shining a light on the quirks of the beauty industry, all while paving her own extraordinary path. Celeste opens up about the nuanced battles of being valued for her sharp mind and quicker wit in a scene often unforgiving to women. Celeste and Jen share about the beautiful chaos of balancing a career with being a superhero mom (or at least trying to be). This episode is more than just laughs (though, swear, you'll have plenty); it's a pat on the back for every one of us out here, doing the thing, being utterly magnificent in our complexity. Here's to celebrating the splendid and wonderful you! * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I would like to live one day without anxiety. I would also like to be a Janet Jackson backup dancer. That's all I ask for.” - Celeste Barber “I take my hat off to women in general, just always and forever. "The mothers who work in the day and then go home and be excellent mothers at night, and they go back to work in the day and they come home and they're excellent mothers. How do they do that?” - Celeste Barber “With women, [being] funny or smart or boundary-pushing is fine as an idea, but [we're asked] 'can you be safe and pretty because that's just easier for us.' And so shifting that lens, the thing is, we're multifaceted. There are so many different types of things to celebrate within women." - Celeste Barber Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Celeste Barber: Challenge Accepted (Celeste's 2019 Comedy Special) Celeste Barber: Fine, Thanks (Celeste's 2023 Comedy Special) All Saints (Medical Drama that got Celeste her start) Wellmania (2023 Netflix Series Starring Celeste) Celeste Barber: Backup Dancer Tour Celeste Barber and Tom Ford Collab Celeste will be in Dallas June 10th at the Majestic Theatre, in Austin June 13th at the Paramount Theatre, and in Houston June 14th at 713 Music Hall Guest's Links: Celeste's Website Celeste's Instagram Celeste's Facebook Celeste's Twitter Celeste's YouTube Channel Connect with Jen! Featuring the wonderful Benjamin Law and Professor John Rasko AO In this episode with the help of a cultural critic and a genetic expert we consider how to best make sense of our ancestral past and the dangers of over identifying with tribes alongside the very real opportunities science is giving us to change our genetics. While we are all unique individuals, who of course come from families and a line of ancestors, in the end we are responsible for our own lives. While we may look to our ancestry for helpful hints as to how to live well, how much, if at all, should our heritage define or constrain us? On a genetic level we have inherited some of the traits of our forebears, and even if, for example the colour of our skin, hair or facial features does express our genetic connection to race, that necessarily ‘mean' something to us or should it be embraced? What about inherited genetic disorders, are there responsibilities around passing these on that need to be considered? While knowing which ‘tribe' we come from can offer a deep sense of belonging, even pride, for some the reminder of our heritage is irrelevant or even shameful or simply unhelpful. The deep psychological pull towards identifying as part of a ‘tribe' can be particularly true if we are discriminated against because of your heritage and background. If you're attacked because you're black, Islamic, Asian, Jewish, deaf etc, you quickly find that you are part of that tribe, whether it's personally important to you or not. There are of course many dangers of over-identifying with tribes. Tribal thinking is always fraught with danger - any look at history will tell you that. These questions about whether our heritage matters, and what it means, have also become heavily politicised. We make sense of our lives through the stories we tell ourselves. Many of us seek out our ancestry, our tribe, as a way of knowing who we are. Yet inherited genes from past individuals, randomly shaken up in their journey across generations and finally passed from our parents to us are just that – random. So how much should our ethnic heritage matter, and is it the most important part of our individual stories? BIOS Benjamin Law is an Australian writer and broadcaster. He's the author of The Family Law (2010), and editor of Growing Up Queer in Australia (2019). Benjamin is also an AWGIE Award-winning screenwriter. Tawny and Lisa talk about the Netflix series, “Wellmania,” starring Celeste Barber. The show knocks down the idea that a fad diet or a stay at a spa will get us “well.” It's also a realistic portrayal of the panic attacks and blacking out from anxiety that many of us have experienced. They also talk about John Mulaney's stand-up comedy special, “Baby J.” Stories that make them think, “that used to be me,” are cathartic and a good reminder of why they stay sober. #243: Barbie, Fatphobia, Stealth Wealth It's another wild week and we're here to make sense of it, support donkeys in tow. The new trailer for the Barbie movie has dropped and we are salivating at the pink plastic universe coming our way. Rod Stewart has been making trips to Bunnings while in town, we explain why. With Ozempics, The Whale, and the Kardashians new looks, writer Rebecca Shaw senses the noughties fatphobia is making a comeback. Her great piece is a reminder of why that's damaging to us all. And the “ludicrously capacious” bag in Tom Wambsgans sights tells a bigger story about how the very rich choose to show their wealth. Meanwhile Myf is bingeing Wellmania, while Zan is laffing it up at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Gaia heeft Pietje Bell maar even terzijde geschoven for that matter.
The past few weeks have been a lot, I won't lie. Nothing need to know, but life does get in the way at times and this was certainly one of those times. As always, and maybe in the spirit of the anime Shoujo Heroine, we will continue moving forward with time and continue to strive to do our best, whatever that may entail on a day-to-day basis. Podcast notes to follow along with this episode: http://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/full-archive/ep92-mando-catch-up-ch2021-secret-invasion-blue-beetle-trailers-legacy-of-big-two-female-comic-creatives-more One of the hard points recently was the news of the passing of celebrated geek, musician, actor and voice actor, Lance Reddick. The dust hasn't quite settled enough for the tribute I feel he is required, so I don't have it here on this episode. But he is due the respect of proper obituary on this podcast, so when we are ready, it will happen. In the meantime, if you have any stories of Lance, please feel free to share them wherever you can so I can add that to his tribute. Starting with Tarot 06:41, I remembered this week to give the note on Divinatory Tarot and the Like that I meant to go over last week, and the full article it came from can be found here: http://hearingshofar.blogspot.com/2010/03/aries-shofar-at-pesach.html Card of the Week for our tarot lessons continuation is #5: the Hierophant. I have the description, symbolism, meanings and interpretation, plus a bit of history and some fun pop culture references! Manga of the week 0:19:23 is, ironically, it turns out, Tokyo Demon Bride Story by TADAICHI NAKAMA! Ironic, because I also learned today that this is the last day of it's publication: the manga ends as of today, April 3rd. While it seems to have a fair amount of haters, I found it quite charming and entertaining. Tokyo Demon Bride story can be found on the Shonen Jump app. Manga News for the week 22:26 includes the MyAnimeList Ultimate List of Manga Recommendations (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2023-03-31/myanimelist-releases-ultimate-list-of-manga-recommendations/.196585 ) as well as a number of other starts and finales. Comic Book News 25:50 is a touch heavy this week, starting with the frankly ludicrous twitter debate of Comics vs Manga, and going into the sad truth of our female creators in comics, and how their legacies are sabotaged by the publishers who hired them. The discussion came from the following tweet: https://twitter.com/ComicBookHerald/status/1636013058890903553?s=20 . We also gave some time and thought to the legacy of Carol Danvers, and how the cancellation of her series at issue 50 is NOT a good decision for anyone involved, even so much as to relate to the previous point about female Big Two creators. Plus I have some King/Sampere Wonder Woman thoughts, which I don't think anyone will have an answer for until her landmark 800th issue. I talk a bit about the kick-off's from 3/22 0:37:49 plus some of what was new this past week, 3/29. As always, this is only a tiny fraction of all comic releases each week, so be sure to contact your local comic purveyor for the full details on what you may be interested in! Comics are, as always, for everyone. We get into the TV/MOVIES segement 0:41:31 ith what's New and Noteworthy lately, including Yellowjackets season 2, Wellmania, Unstable (wow, bit of trend here, eh?), School Spirits, and more. We're back to having a PROPER News/Announcements segment this week, starting with the RUMORS: 48:13, then MCU: 51:59 including the leaving of Victoria Alonso and Ike Perlmutter, Secret Invasion info and theories, the necessary mentioning of changes that may come to Loki season 2's cast, Liv Tyler's Betty Ross, and the casting of Wonder Man's brother, Grim Reaper. Then DCU: 1:03:16 talking Batman 2's villain, a certain unfortunate project, and of course, the Blue Beetle trailer! Big ups and downs in the pop culture news this week, for sure. Anime News 1:06:58 has me talking Spring 2023 Lineup English Dubs (no dates! why no dates, Crunchyroll?) as well as new Anime and show announcements, including the Netflix Scott Pilgrim project, Konosuba, Re:Zero, Spy x Family, Girlfriend Girlfriend, and more! Finally, I get caught up with where we're at with the Mandalorian season 3, talking chapters 20 and 21: the Foundling and the Pirate, respectively. From space pterodactyls to HOLY SHIT I forgot to finish talking about episode 21...ummmmm oops. I'll see if I remembe to talk about the Armorer + Bo Katan next week! heh. oops. And that's it! happy to have you here. Please rate/like my episodes so they get seen by more listeners, and thank you as always for your support. Next week we'll talk card #6, the Lovers, plus a new Manga of the week, more shows and movies and Mando, more anime, and tons of fun, I hope. A chance for Equity member Sara Cooper to talk to first assistant director, Noni Roy (Carmen, Total Control 2, Wellmania) about the actor and first assistant director (first AD) relationship. First AD's manage the schedule and coordinate cast and crew to ensure that shoots run smoothly. Their work includes considering the project's budget, the time required, cast and crew availability and location limitations. This conversation will be an opportunity to discuss the things that actors may not have had the opportunity to talk about before. It may be particularly useful for actors with a theatre background who are not as familiar with the complexities of screen acting.

On the show today… Celeste Barber is returning to her acting roots by starring in Wellmania, a new comedic drama series which has received an eight-episode order by Netflix in Australia. The series is inspired by Brigid Delaney's novel Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness and is co-created by Brigid and Benjamin Law. And Bella Hadid has explained why she's returning to Victoria's Secret, despite her own negative experiences modeling for the company and the fact that they've been called out for a lack of inclusivity. But is her reasoning enough to reinvigorate the brand's image? Plus, this week Kanye West made a bold romantic gesture to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, in what looked like a rom-com inspired move to win her back. It did not go well. The next day Kim's legal team set out to make her officially single again and now we have to talk about other Hollywood stars who (unfortunately) went down this same path.
