Österrike-Ungern inledde första världskriget genom att anfalla Serbien samtidigt som de ställdes mot den ryska armén i Polen och Galizien. Detta skulle visa sig ödesdigert. Rysslands numerära överlägsenhet hotade att fullständigt krossa den habsburgska armén.Räddningen blev tysk hjälp och rysk militär inkompetens. Slutfacit för Österrike-Ungerns del under världskrigets första halvår var förluster på 1,3 miljoner soldater, en förlust som dubbelmonarkin aldrig lyckades återhämta sig ifrån under krigets fortsättning.I detta avsnitt av Militärhistoriepodden ger sig Martin Hårdstedt och Peter Bennesved i kast med några av första världskrigets mindre kända strider.Samtidigt som österrikarna genomförde tre misslyckade försök att besegra Serbien inleddes striderna på östfronten i Ostpreussen, Polen och Galizien på allvar i augusti 1914. Inledningsvis besegrade tyskarna två ryska arméer i slagen vid Tannenberg och de Masuriska sjöarna. I Galizien började striderna med österrikiska framgångar, som snabbt förbyttes till en allmän österrikisk reträtt. Rysslands numerära överlägsenhet blev omedelbart påtaglig.Den österrikiske överbefälhavaren Conrad hade genom att splittra sin armé bäddat för nederlag på två fronter. I september organiserade tyskarna en ny armé, den 9:e tyska armén, och inledde en offensiv mot Warszawa. Trots att offensiven stoppades endast 20 kilometer från den polska huvudstaden, avlastades österrikarna. Tyskarna visade stor operativ flexibilitet genom att snabbt omgruppera sina styrkor med hjälp av järnvägen och inleda en ny offensiv, denna gång norrifrån mot Warszawa. Österrikarna följde med i offensiven. Än en gång lyckades ryssarna stå emot, och i december ebbade striderna ut.Inför fortsättningen stod två saker klara. För det första var ryssarnas militära förmåga begränsad, trots deras till synes outsinliga tillgång på manskap. För det andra visade sig Österrike-Ungern vara i stort sett militärt inkompetenta. Särskilt ledarskapet under Conrad präglades av stora brister. Armén var inte stridstekniskt övad för krig, utan snarare för att fungera som en inrikespolitisk styrka – en sorts polistrupp som dessutom var van vid att visa upp sig på parader. Welcome to Season 4 of The LIUniverse and thank you for joining us on this journey.   We're kicking off the new season with another Chuck GPT episode devoted to answering your questions, and to do that, we've brought back archaeology expert Hannah Liu, MEd. She's not alone: joining Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu is The LIUniverse's Social Media Guru, Stacey Severn.   As always, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, Earth's temporary second moon 2024 PT5. Don't get excited, though, because it's only the size of a school bus and won't be visible to the naked eye. But it gives Chuck the chance to ask Hannah about the impact of celestial visitors in the past, and she tells us the story of Caesar's comet (C/-43 K1) which showed up for about a week in the summer of 44 BCE – not long after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Allen also brings up the Great comet of 1680 and how it affected the development of astronomy.   Our first question comes from NSimplexPachinko, who asks, “During condensation of matter to 300,000 years after the Big Bang, did spacetime cease to expand, or did it continue expanding at the same rate as the energy within it?”   Short answer: Yes. For the long answer, you'll have to watch or listen to the show for Chuck's description (honed for the Intro to Astronomy class he teaches) of decoupling, expansion, universal evolution and “BIG, BIG, INFLATION!”   Stacey reads the next question from a listener in Poland. Pshemo Ziembora wonders, “The volume/length of space should be different for every observer depending on how fast they're travelling or how strong the gravity field is. In other words, the speed of light will always be constant for each observer, but it may have a different value than 300,000 km/second. Distances on cosmic scales may vary due to your speed. When you are traveling faster in space your distance should be shorter. What am I missing?”   Chuck explains that Pshemo isn't missing anything and has got it exactly right, describing the insight we now call the “Lorentz Contraction” which Albert Einstein built into his Special Theory of Relativity. Allen explains the physics involved, with an example that includes muons and cosmic rays and how different mediums can impact the speed of light.   Speaking of Poland, Hannah shares a story about licking the wall of the Wieliczka salt mine, which she visited on a trip there. For those of you watching, you can see a photo of one of the caverns hollowed out by the miners, with statues and scenic reliefs carved from the salt. There are no photos of the reported salt tasting.   Our next question comes from one of Chuck's Astronomy 100 students: “Is Earth Intelligent?”   Chuck describes the Gaia Hypothesis, before the group grapples with the question. Hannah looks at the skepticism around the validity of that very hypothesis, and then takes a typical LIUniverse deep dive into Percy Jackson, and Greek and Egyptian mythology. Allen assesses Earth's intelligence through the lens of Artificial Intelligence. Stacey brings up the concept that climate change is the Earth taking revenge on humanity for our actions, which Hannah relates back to Greek mythology, natural disasters, and the role of Demeter in bringing about winter.   Finally, “@I have an unoriginal name” asks, “How does the cyclic model of the universe deal with information not being destroyed.” And Andy Love wonders “about the quantum gravity issue. In the late 1500s Poland and Lithuania joined to create the Commonwealth, a remarkable, if flawed, experiment in constitutional monarchy that would last more than 200 years. Its legacy of religious tolerance and representative republicanism is strangely overlooked in American history books - and I would guess in other histories as well. One of the chief economic engines of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the Wielizcka Salt Mine, an amazing wonder delved over 700 years. To visit Wieliczka is to be amazed at the artistry of salt sculptures and impressed by the sheer cheesiness of all the salty dwarves. So many salty dwarves. Or maybe they're gnomes... Everything is covered in salt: the stairs, the walls, the statues, and the chandeliers hanging above are covered in salt crystals. We travel to Poland this week and walk down at least 320 stairs to explore the Wieliczka Salt Mine. While we are underground, we join the next tour group and visit the Cracow Saltworks Museum (Muzeum Żup Krakowskich Wieliczka), the largest underground museum in Europe. Once we exit the mine, we stop by the Graduation Tower (Tężnia Solankowa) to relax and breathe in the fresh salty air.

Kopalnia soli w Wieliczce jest jego drugim domem. Nadsztygar Wiesław Wiewiórka pracuje w górnictwie niemal 40 lat. To pokoleniowa tradycja. Pracował tu jego ojciec, który był między innymi głównym geologiem kopalni. Również syn pana Wiesława postanowił pójść w jego ślady. Wcześniej pracował w dziale turystyki, teraz jest sztygarem. Mimo że wydobycie tego kruszcu w Wieliczce zakończyło się w latach dziewięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku, nadal jest pozyskiwany z solanki. Górnicy też pracują na co dzień nad zabezpieczeniem tego miejsca przed potężnymi siłami natury.

Zbliża się 19. edycja festiwalu Misteria Paschalia, który odbędzie się w dniach 12-18 kwietnia w Krakowie. Martyna Pastuszka, dyrektorka rezydentka tegorocznej odsłony festiwalu, zaproponowała muzyczną podróż nie tylko w czasy Mozarta i Haydna, ale również do średniowiecznej Florencji. W Wielką Sobotę w Kopalni Soli "Wieliczka" będzie można posłuchać muzyki stulecia Boccaccia oraz Petrarki. Wyjątkowym wydarzeniem będzie również pierwsze od 200 lat wykonanie oratorium Jacoba Schubacka "Die Jungen ze Emaus". "Pewnego dnia proboszcz parafii w Tarnowskich Górach podszedł do mnie i pokazał mi niesamowicie piękną partyturę z 1778 roku z tamtejszych zbiorów. Zapytał, czy to możliwe, aby ją wykonać. Ze względu na duży skład orkiestry to wykonanie musiało poczekać" - wspomina Martyna Pastuszka. Schuback, prawnik i kompozytor z Hamburga, jest zapomnianym kompozytorem, który bywa określany mianem amatora. Zdaniem dyrektorki rezydentki zasługuje on jednak na większe uznanie: "Jego partytura jest pełna zaskakujących zwrotów. Da quando è iniziata la pandemia non è stato semplice viaggiare.Vincoli, regole in continuo cambiamento, moduli da compilare… situazioni che portano a perdere, almeno un po', lo slancio e la voglia anche solo di sognare la prossima meta.Però, bisogna restare sempre positivi, anche se dirlo in questo periodo potrebbe quasi suonare stonato, e sfruttare ogni spiraglio di luce che ci viene offerto. Sotto qualsiasi aspetto, non solo riguardo i viaggi.I miei amici del BerTour ed io volevamo riassaporare il piacere di condividere un nuovo viaggio insieme e così, il sempre pronto Bert, aveva cercato di capire alcuni mesi fa se c'era qualcosa che verso novembre potevamo fare giusto nel week end, partendo venerdì sera e tornando domenica.Tra le città europee che ancora mancavano al nostro appello una ci incuriosiva e, anche se sapevamo che vedere tutto quello che avremmo voluto in circa 48 ore sarebbe stato difficile, la nostra scelta era ricaduta comunque su Cracovia, insieme alle Miniere di Sale della vicina Wieliczka e, soprattutto, ad Auschwitz.Come ormai ben sapete, nei BerTour situazioni fuori dagli schemi sono sempre state all'ordine del giorno.E anche in questo viaggio, ovviamente, non sono mancate.Ve le racconto, mentre vi porto insieme ai miei inseparabili amici, nel nostro viaggio in Polonia.

William O. Stephens was born in June 1962 in Lafayette, Indiana. He was raised in West Lafayette, Indiana, the second son of Purdue University professors. He attended West Lafayette Senior High School where he earned varsity letters in tennis and began his study of ancient civilizations and Latin with an inspiring teacher named Oliver S. Oesch. After two years at the College of Wooster in Ohio studying philosophy with James Coke Haden and Latin with Joe and Leslie P. Day, Stephens transferred to Earlham, a Quaker college in Richmond, Indiana. At Earlham he studied philosophy with Robert L. Horne and Peter Suber, Greek and Latin with Steve Heiny and Liffey Thorpe, and played varsity tennis (doubles). After graduating from Earlham in 1984, Stephens moved to Philadelphia to do his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn he studied with Charles H. Kahn, Alexander Nehamas, and Martin Ostwald, and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1990. In autumn of that year he joined the Arts & Sciences faculty at Creighton University.   He has published articles on topics in Stoicism, Epicureanism and friendship, ecology and food ethics, ethics and animals, sex and love, sportsmanship, and the concept of a person. His books include an English translation of Adolf Bonhöffer's work The Ethics of the Stoic Epictetus (Peter Lang, 1996), an edited collection The Person: Readings in Human Nature (Prentice Hall, 2006), Stoic Ethics: Epictetus and Happiness as Freedom (Continuum, 2007), and Marcus Aurelius: A Guide for the Perplexed (Continuum, 2012). A manuscript entitled Lessons in Liberation: Epictetus as Educator is his current research project. He teaches a variety of courses in philosophy.   Stephens has traveled widely. In May 2016 he toured much of Poland, from Wiżajny (near the Lithuania border) and Suwałki in the northeast to the lakes of Mikołajki. After presenting two papers at the University of Warsaw he visited Kraków, the Wieliczka salt mine, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. In June 2017 he returned to Poland, presented two papers at the University of Warsaw, and visited Poznań, Jastrowie, and the village of Chwalimie before traveling to Marseille and Aix, France.   He has presented papers abroad at conferences in London, England (Stoicon 2018), in Toronto, Canada (Stoicon 2017), at Aix-en-Provence, on the island of Rhodes, at Vilia, Greece, and at Palmerston North, New Zealand. He has toured the island of Crete, the northern and southern islands of New Zealand, Iceland, and several of the Galapagos Islands. Stephens has taken cruises to Ensenada, Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Isle of Symi in the Dodecanese island chain. His expedition aboard the National Geographic Endeavor to the Antarctic peninsula was by way of Santiago, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina. In England he has toured Cornwall, East Sussex, Bournemouth County, the Salisbury Plain (and Stonehenge), the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, and the Isle of Skye. He has visited Montreal, Vancouver Island, and Victoria, British Columbia. In the Hawaiian islands he has visited Maui (and Haleakalā), Kauai (and Waimea Canyon), and much of Oahu.   Stephens enjoys tennis, chess, hiking, spelunking, kayaking, and nature photography. His domestic treks include the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier, the Cascades, and the Olympic peninsula in Washington. He has kayaked in the San Juan Islands of Washington and in the Point Reyes National Seashore area of California. He has visited Crater Lake in Oregon and Boundary County, the Kootenai River, and Coeur d' Alene in the Idaho panhandle. In California Stephens has hiked in Redwood, Yosemite, and Joshua Tree National Parks, spelunked in Lava Beds National Monument, and visited Crescent City, Tule Lake, Bodega Bay, Monterey, and Big Sur. He has explored Arches National Park, the Moab area, the Valley of the Gods, and Monument Valley in Utah. His travels in Arizona include the Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Petrified Forest National Park, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, and Sedona. He has visited Shiprock, Petroglyph National Monument, and Santa Fe in New Mexico. In Colorado he has visited Rocky Mountain National Park, Crested Butte, Mesa Verde, Durango, Royal Gorge, Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Vail, and has traveled over Loveland Pass. In August 2016 Stephens drove Mount Herman Road from Monument to Woodland Park, Colorado. As a boy he visited Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. His travels include the Badlands, Wind Cave, and the Black Hills of South Dakota, Madeline Island off the northern coast of Wisconsin, Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave of Kentucky (the longest known cave system in the world), Acadia National Park in Maine, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and many parts of Florida. He has yet to visit Alaska, Louisiana, Arkansas, or Mississippi.   From an early age Stephens has closely followed the misadventures of the Chicago Cubs, which helps explain his interest in Stoicism. Esta conexión supone recuperar el vuelo directo con Polonia, que se había perdido desde que los viajes a Varsovia quedaron en suspenso. Katowice es la ciudad más importante de la región de Silesia. Ubicada al este de Cracovia, en su entorno están también las minas de sal de Wieliczka, Patrimonio de la Unesco. Desde Cracovia es también desde donde parten casi todos los viajeros que visitan Auschwitz. La ville fantôme de Calico au Texas, la mine de sel de Wieliczka en Pologne et l'éco-parc Jinguashi Gold à Taiwan ont en commun d’avoir été des mines abandonnées avant d’être transformées en parcs à thème et de devenir des sites touristiques mondialement connus. La Corée du Sud possède désormais un endroit similaire, il s’agit de la grotte Gwangmyeong, un parc à thème situé au cœur de la montagne Gahak dans la ville de Gwangmyeong dans la province Gyeonggi. La vieille mine, abandonnée il y a plus de 40 ans à la fermeture de l'exploitation en 1972, s’est progressivement métamorphosée en un site touristique très fréquenté qui attire environ 1,5 million de visiteurs par an.
