Chevrolet says the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison AEV Edition is “America's ultimate off-road beast.” After driving it on and off road for a full week in Maine, America on the Road Co-Host Chris Teague has no reason to question that somewhat boastful assessment. After all, the truck not only uses the still-new Chevy Colorado platform, but it also enhances that platform with a number of American Expedition Vehicles add-ons that give it even greater capabilities. As just a taste of that, here are some of those added pieces of kit: segment-exclusive Multimatic front and rear Jounce Control Dampers, AEV heavy-duty winch-capable front bumper, AEV rear bumper and AEV fender flares, AEV 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels with segment-exclusive 35-inch OD Mud/Terrain tires, and boron steel skid plates and rocker protectors. How did the truck's class-leading approach angle (38.2 degrees), departure angle (26 degrees) and breakover angle (26.9 degrees) work in the rigors of a Maine off-road course? Teague will tell us in this episode. Across the country, Host Jack Nerad was putting the 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge Single-Motor Ultimate through its paces. Looking to add range and hit a reasonable price point, Volvo introduced the single-motor version of the XC40 Recharge this year. In doing so, the company created the first rear-drive Volvo in more than two decades. As Nerad found during his week-long test, there's a lot to like about the single-motor version of the small battery-electric SUV. It features a torquey 248-horsepower permanent magnet e-motor on the rear axle in tandem with a new 82 kWh battery pack. The combination of a more energy-dense battery and more efficient motor allows the XC40 Recharge to deliver 293 miles of range on the combined EPA test cycle. As a further bonus, the uprated battery pack enables charging at a top rate of 200 kW DC. Charging from 10 to 80 percent state-of-charge takes approximately 28 minutes. But how does it drive? Nerad will reveal that in the road test segment. Our special guest this week will discuss a subject of vital interest to all of us who drive. Three automakers have announced a plan to develop new internal combustion engine technology, and it has some very interesting wrinkles. We'll tell you more about that, too. ELECTRIC VW TRINITY TO BE BUILT AT A NEW $2.2-BILLION FACTORY - Volkswagen has announced it has passed a resolution that gives a go-ahead to build a new plant that will build the upcoming all-electric model, the Trinity. The up-and-coming flagship model was first announced in 2021, which will spearhead the next generation of zero-emission VW cars. - The new factory will be built near VW's main plant in Wolfsburg. - VW said investment totals to around €2 billion or around $2.2 billion with the current exchange rates. - Construction for the new Wolfburg plant for the Trinity is set to begin as early as spring 2023. With his taunts, Diess not only angered the works council but also started a power struggle within the Board. In the end, Diess will now get his plant outside the current plant boundaries, but VW brand chief Ralf Brandstätter, who will soon move to Beijing, is considered the architect behind this solution - Throughout the 2030s, the main plant could then be converted entirely – and Wolfsburg could build up to 750,000 electric cars per year. The document reportedly has 536 pages and contains a long list of requirements the company has to fulfill. Once it does, the final operating license will be issued. Of course, this was good news. Tesla announced they would get it done within two weeks. This would have meant they could have started producing those ‘Berlin Model Ys' at the end of this month. Some 2,000 vehicles were already made during test runs. - late on Friday night, The Administrative Court in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany's smaller Frankfurt located at the Polish border, found a procedural error which has implications. When Brandenburg's Environment Agency issued a permit for the delivery of millions of tons of additional water for the factory, it forgot to involve the public which had the right to comment on the decision. This process will have to be made up for. Obviously, both the inhabitants in the area and Tesla need water. The factory will use 1.4 million cubic meters (50 million cubic feet) of it per year. - For now, Brandenburg has the option to suspend the implementation of the court decision until the matter is resolved. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.    HOW LONG DOES THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 TAKE TO CHARGE FROM 0% TO 100%? - Although we've already done some DC fast charging tests, we had the opportunity to repeat the test on an ID.4 First Edition, so we drained the battery down to zero and charged it up to 100% on an Electrify America 150 kW DC fast charger. - The ID.4 has an 82 kWh battery, of which 77 kWh is usable. Its peak charging rate is supposed to be 125 kW, but we were able to touch 131 kW. In fact, the ID.4 charged at 123 kW or more all the way up to the 30% state of charge point, and it took only 12 minutes to do so. - 50% state of charge in 20 minutes, and after 40 minutes, the vehicle is at 80% state of charge and has taken in 67 kWh. - While the vehicle was charging from 0% to 80%, the average power it took in was 110 kW, which is nearly 90% (88%, actually) of its stated peak charging rate. - As good a charging EV as the ID.4 is, it may get even better very soon. That's because we have heard that Volkswagen may soon increase the ID.4's maximum charge rate from 125 kW to 175 kW through an OTA software update. On our (TAT) adventure, we fit a couple of carry-on sized suitcases, a couple of duffle bags, a backpack, and a briefcase in the tunnel all at the same time. The gear tunnel is deep, and if you're good with Tetris you can fit even more stuff than you think, especially if you have items you can fold, bend, or squeeze. This suggests the sedan will likely hew to Nio's scheduled delivery timeframe.The ET7's description in the list reportedly suggests batteries for the model will be supplied by Nio's longtime supplier CATL. - LFP batteries are relatively cheaper than ternary lithium-ion batteries. TESLA MODEL Y LANDS IN NETHERLANDS IN 30% PLUGIN SHARE MONTH - The Dutch plugin vehicle (PEV) market continues in the fast lane, with 6,637 plugin registrations logged last month. That meant that last month's PEV share of the overall passenger auto market reached 30% (20% BEV), pulling the year-to-date PEV share to 22% (12% BEV) and the total tally to 45,426 units - In August, the plugin sales leader was again the Kia Niro EV, with 753 registrations, placing it as the leader in the overall auto market. The runner-up was the Skoda Enyaq, with the Czech station-wagon-disguised-as-a-crossover registering 487 units. - BEVs are returning to form, getting 66% of August's registrations. Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/09/09/tesla-model-y-lands-in-netherlands-in-30-plugin-share-month TESLA PLANS ENERGY TRADING TEAM AS COMPANY EXPANDS BATTERY PROJECTS - Electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is looking to staff an energy trading team to support its battery and renewable power projects, according to Tesla's website and an employee post on the career site LinkedIn.com. - The company plans to use an in-house automated trading platform, called Autobidder, for "bidding batteries into multiple wholesale energy markets," according to the job description on Tesla's website. - The job requires expertise in wholesale electricity markets, and the candidate will "lead trading and real-time operations for battery, solar, and wind projects participating in wholesale energy markets," using Autobidder, according to the job posting. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/tesla-plans-begin-trading-solar-wind-battery-storage-energy-2021-09-08 WHY RIVIAN'S "TANK TURN" STATIONARY SPIN FEATURE IS DELAYED - First, unless conditions are perfect, it's possible each wheel will have a different amount of grip than the others and require more or less power to break traction. While the truck's computer can read the road surface via suspension inputs as you're driving, there's no good way for it to know exactly what the surface under each tire is like when you come to a stop. If any wheel is getting too much or too little power during a Tank Turn, it can cause the vehicle to spin off in a random direction instead of rotating in one place. Power delivery has to be programmed very carefully to respond to changing grip before and during a Tank Turn. You can see this issue crop up right at the beginning of the video. - because the truck's wheelbase isn't square (that is, because there's more distance between the front and rear axles than there is between the wheels on either side of each axle), it won't always rotate around the exact center of the vehicle, especially if the surface isn't consistent. If the point of rotation is off center, it can cause the vehicle to spin off in any direction instead of rotating in one place. A safeguard needs to be programmed to recognize this situation and either correct it or end the Tank Turn. - In order to execute a Tank Turn, all four wheels have to break traction. Once that happens, the truck is at the mercy of physics. If the surface is inclined in any direction, the truck will slide that direction as it spins. - During testing, Rivian discovered the amount of power needed to get all four wheels spinning results in a lot of wheel speed, which ends up making the truck spin around very fast. The company revealed the EV SUV at the IAA Mobility show, where it also announced a G-Class SUV concept, and a more attainable electric sedan. - Mercedes says the interior is supposed to remind you of a yacht, and the SUV has something called a “Chauffeur package.” - Mercedes calls the concept “a clear preview of the first fully electric series-production model” in the Maybach line, and the company already has an EV platform kicking around that it could put to use. With nearly 50,000 chargers planned by 2030 as part of an ambitious plan, NYC's government looks to build one of the largest municipal charging networks in the country. - Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has signed new legislation to support the state's efforts outlined below. The legislation sets a new goal for all new passenger cars and trucks sold in New York State to be zero emissions by 2035. - In a recent release from the NYPA alongside the NYC DOT and EVconnect, the group has successfully installed four of 28 planned DC fast charging plugs within city-owned municipal garages. The initial goal for this city-owned and operated charging network is 80 plugs by 2025. - The recently shared plan outlines ambitious, city-wide climate goals for the next decade, citing that NYC will need 400,000 drivers to switch to EVs by 2030 and will work to provide the charging infrastructure to support them. It would be a seismic shift for an auto industry dominated by gas-powered vehicles. But resistance to Biden's ambitious goal is coming from a surprising stakeholder: the United Autoworkers Union, one of Biden's oldest political allies. - There are tens of thousands of auto workers in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio involved in producing internal combustion engines, Wayne State University professor and UAW labor expert Marick Masters told CNN. With many fewer parts to electric vehicles and less labor required, there are natural questions about what impact the transition could have on jobs. - Union leaders told CNN they recognize an ally in Biden and have praised the president's pro-union rhetoric. The next generation of Volvo's fully electric cars – the first of which is the company's first SUV on a completely new electric-only technology base. The design of the Concept Recharge will likely be similar to that of the electric XC90 successor due to arrive next year. Volvo Cars introduced Wednesday the XC40 Recharge, an all-electric vehicle that CTO Henrik Green described as “a car of firsts and a car of the future.” The XC40 Recharge is hardly the first electric vehicle on the market. But for Volvo the XC40 is a “car of firsts.” This is the company's first all-electric vehicle.
