The idea that natural elements can serve as witnesses to history is central to my work. When you look at the landscapes in my projects – what I refer to as ‘landscapes of violence' or ‘geographies of violence' – you see how these environments bear witness to historical trauma and conflict. (Ali Cherri) This episode was recorded on 19 February 2025 in the context of the exhibition: Ali Cherri How I Am Monument 6.12.2024 – 23.2.2025 Ali Cherri was born in Beirut and lives and works in Paris. Spanning film, performance, sculpture, drawing, and installation, his work is inspired both by archaeological artefacts and the natural world, exploring the temporal shifts between ancient civilisations and contemporary societies. Using artefacts as a starting point, he investigates the boundaries of ideologies that underpin the foundations of nations and the myth of national progression. His work considers the links between archaeology, historical narrative and heritage, and the processes of excavation and relocation of cultural objects into museums. Reflecting on different geographies of violence in his native Lebanon but also in the broader region, he interrogates the ways in which political violence disseminates into people's bodies and the physical and cultural landscape. More Jeanette Pacher is a curator for contemporary art and has worked at the Secession since 2007, where she has developed numerous exhibitions in a sustained dialogue with artists, often supporting them in the production of new works, and has edited and contributed to related publications. She lectures regularly at the Department of Site-Specific Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and, since 2023, has served as a jury member for KÖR – Art in Public Space Vienna. Previously, she was part of the editorial team for the Ö1 Kunstradio radio show and began her curatorial career at Kunsthalle Wien in the mid-1990s. This episode is a conversation between Simone Fattal and Jeanette Pacher, the curator of the exhibition. It was recorded on June 19, 2024 in the context of the exhibition: Simone Fattal metaphorS 21.6. – 8.9.2024 In her exhibition metaphorS, Simone Fattal presents bodies of work from different periods in her career and in a variety of media, including fired clay and ceramic sculptures, paintings, and collages. With her works, she tells stories of humanity, culture, history, and the present. Conflict, consensus, nature, faith, and trust are central concerns. Despite (or precisely because of) the artist's nomadic life, her oeuvre is deeply rooted in the millennia-old culture and history of the Middle East—she was raised in Damascus and Beirut—and the epic literature, poetry, archaeology, and landscapes of this region are both vital sources of inspiration and central themes. More Simone Fattal (*1942) was raised in Damascus and Beirut, studied archaeology and philosophy in France and began painting in Beirut in the early 1970s. After years of civil war, she left Lebanon in 1980 and settled in California, where she founded the Post-Apollo Press; for the next thirty years, she dedicated herself to publishing literature and poetry, including many books by her partner Etel Adnan. In the late 1980s, she studied sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute and fell in love with working with clay. Meanwhile, she also started making collages that combine pictures of archaeological sites and relics with contemporary photographs. Today, Simone Fattal lives and works in Paris. Jeanette Pacher is a curator for contemporary visual arts and has been working at the Secession since 2007. A is for Architecture's 108th episode is a conversation with the architect Sam Jacob, principal of Sam Jacob Studio and Professor and head of Architectural Design Studio 3 in the Institute of Architecture (I oA) at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Formerly founding director of FAT with Charles Holland and Sean Griffiths, Sam's work includes exceptional buildings and adaptations, exhibitions, interiors and things which, liberally distributed over the years of his practice[s], are to be found all over the internet.  Sam puts it thus in the recording, ‘normally when we make architecture […] you start with a sketch, and then you make it a little bit more accurate, and you get it into Vectorworks, maybe. And then you might make a model, and then you do, you know, detailed design and the tender etc, etc. And that's the kind of process and then you end up with a building. […] But if we think about like, architecture itself, maybe there's not really a point where it becomes real and different, you know, becomes part of the real world and different from all those other forms of representation, which you were using, as you went through the design process. Maybe we could understand architecture itself as a form of representation'.  You can find Sam on Instagram. Thanks for listening. +  Music credits: Bruno Gillick

Can Critics Create a Standard of Taste? - A Conversation with Kathrin Heinrich

This podcast episode explores the role of art criticism, especially the question whether critics can establish a standard for determining what constitutes beauty in art. For this episode, I took inspiration from my thesis where I assessed three thinkers who offer contrasting perspectives on this matter: David Hume, Pierre Bourdieu, and Alexander Nehamas.Hume, in his work Of The Standard of Taste, suggests that although aesthetic judgments are subjective, they can be assessed by competent critics. This is not to say that there is an objective standard for beauty, but that judgements made by those possessing certain qualities that make for a good critic hold more weight. Pierre Bourdieu, in his work Distinction, contends that taste is shaped by social factors, such as cultural upbringing and class distinctions, thereby challenging the notion of such a standard and arguing instead that taste is a marker of social class that perpetuates already existing hierarchies. In order to show that elitism and social power is not all there is to art criticism, I introduced Alexander Nehamas' ideas from his book, Only a Promise of Happiness, presenting a view of critics who, instead of imposing a standard, are encouraging us to engage with artworks on a personal level, inducing a diversity of interpretations and evaluations. In this podcast episode, I will take these thinkers as my inspiration for interviewing Katrin Heinrich, an art historian and critic based in Vienna. She studied art history and comparative literature at the University of Vienna, and currently she works in research support at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Kathrin is also a doctoral candidate at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she was on a scientific staff from 2020 to 2022, has taught courses and co-organized a research project called Addressing Amnesia, Performing Trauma. Her writing has been published in newspapers and magazines like Der Standard, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frieze, Texte zur Kunst, Springerin, Eikon and PW Magazine. In 2018, she was awarded the AICA Austria Prize for Young Art Criticism. (music for intro and outro is by Lili Kátai, playing an improvised version of Debussy's Arabesque L. 66 No. 1 in E Major on piano)Special thanks to Thomas Aichinger and Cathy Mason.

Philipp Blom in conversation with Oliver Stuenkel THE GLOBAL SOUTH AND THE FUTURE OF WORLD ORDER In a restless, multipolar world order, South America's great powers — Brazil, Argentina, Colombia — are claiming a stronger voice and more agency in global politics. Their strategic position and their political alliances mean that international arrangements need to be readjusted or entirely rethought. Their stance on issues as diverse as Russia's war on Ukraine and Decarbonization are less and less aligned to the interests of the USA or the EU and more open towards China, India, and Russia, while the size of their economies, internal and external migration, as well as organized crime, armed conflicts and political instability make them a volatile and increasingly crucial factor of the international order. How will South America's influence evolve, and which interests will South American countries prioritize as the international order is creaking under the strains of multiple crises? Oliver Stuenkel is a Professor at the School of International Relations at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in São Paulo. He is also a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC and a columnist for Estado de São Paulo and Americas Quarterly. His research focuses on geopolitics and global order, Brazilian foreign policy, Latin American politics and emerging powers. He is the author of several books about geopolitics, including The BRICS and the Future of Global Order (Lexington) and the Post-Western World: How Emerging Powers Are Remaking Global Order (Polity). Oh, and Michael, who got flattered so much early on, needs most of the episode to recuperate.    Rita Isiba: https://ritaisiba.com/   Linkedin: https://at.linkedin.com/in/ritaisiba   Business Administrator: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Business_Administration  Emotional Intelligence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence  Master of Applied Human Rights: https://appliedhumanrights.uni-ak.ac.at  University of Applied Arts Vienna (die Angewandte): https://www.dieangewandte.at/en  Cognitive Bias: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_bias  Inclusive Culture: https://www.hivelearning.com/site/resource/diversity-inclusion/create-an-inclusive-culture-at-scale/  Die 12 Geschworenen (Film): https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_12_Geschworenen  My little Pony: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Little_Pony_–_Freundschaft_ist_Magie      Subscribe to the Podcast  RSS Feed https://nerdsoflaw.libsyn.com/rss   Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/nerds-of-law-podcast/id1506472002   SPOTIFY https://open.spotify.com/show/12D6osXfccI1bjAzapWzI4   Google Play Store https://playmusic.app.goo.gl/?ibi=com.google.PlayMusic&isi=691797987&ius=googleplaymusic&apn=com.google.android.music&link=https://play.google.com/music/m/Idvhwrimkmxb2phecnckyzik3qq?t%3DNerds_of_Law_Podcast%26pcampaignid%3DMKT-na-all-co-pr-mu-pod-16   YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7rmwzBy-IRGh8JkLCPIjyGMA-nHMtiAC   Deezer https://www.deezer.com/de/show/1138852     Nerds of Law®   http://www.nerdsoflaw.com   https://twitter.com/NerdsOfLaw   https://www.instagram.com/nerdsoflaw/   https://www.facebook.com/NerdsOfLaw/   Music by Mick Bordet www.mickbordet.com    Nerds of Law ® ist eine in Österreich registrierte Wortmarke.

Designer Dani Clode and researcher Paulina Kieliba share their insights into designing a robotic Third Thumb, how the human brain supports and integrates augmentation devices, and how we can begin to use advanced prosthetics to extend our abilities in new and unexpected ways. Dani Clode is an upper-limb prosthetic, augmentation and product designer, the founder of Dani Clode Design and a Senior Research Technician at the Plasticity Lab. Dani has a multi-disciplinary approach to her work that investigates the future architecture and perception of our bodies. Incorporating new materials and design processes, the mechanics of the human body and robotics, Dani works to challenge the perception and boundaries of prosthetic design and extend the human form. Alongside neuroscience research with the Plasticity Lab, Dani's Third Thumb augmentation and prosthetic work has been exhibited world-wide, including four permanent museum displays – in the German Museum of Technology, Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, Futurium Berlin and the National Museum of Scotland. Paulina Kieliba is a neuroscientist and engineer working in the Plasticity Lab at UCL. She is interested in combining the strengths of technology and neuroscientific research to best help individuals suffering from motor deficits. In particular, she explores opportunities for improving the usability and design of artificial limbs. In her research, she is looking at the extra robotic fingers as an alternative to traditional prosthetic devices and studies the changes in the sensorimotor systems associated with hand augmentation. Elana Shapira discusses the tangled relationship between Austrian Nationalism and Zionism in Viennese Modernism Berta Zuckerkandl grew up witnessing her father, publisher of the newspaper Neues Wiener Tagblatt, Moritz Szeps’s stormy career and political engagements. Moritz Szeps was a close advisor to the liberal Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf and a supporter of an Austria-France alliance through his connections with liberal French politicians such as Léon Gambetta and Georges Clemenceau. Clemenceau’s brother, Paul, married Szeps’s eldest daughter Sophie. Berta also became involved in political causes. Learning about the “Dreyfus affair” at her sister’s salon, Zuckerkandl supported the fight to recognize his innocence. For Berta Zuckerkandl, the city of Vienna would become hers to form. Among the guests in the early days of Zuckerkandl’s renowned salon were non-Jewish cultural critic and Zionist Hermann Bahr. Other members in her salon associated with the Zionist movement were authors Richard Beer-Hofmann and Felix Salten of the literary group “Jung Wien” (Young Vienna), and who also played critical roles in shaping Viennese modernism. Working with her colleagues Bahr and the critic Ludwig Hevesi, Zuckerkandl raised the flag for modern Austrian art within a conservative and provincial cultural climate. She promoted modern design as part of constructing a progressive Austrian national identification. This talk aims to explore the antisemitic background and the pluralistic character of Austrian nationalism and Zionism, as they developed in the early years in relation to each other within and in relation to Zuckerkandl’s cultural networks. Speaker Bio: Elana Shapira is cultural and design historian and project leader of the Austrian Science Fund research project “Visionary Vienna: Design and Society 1918–1934” (2017-2021). She is a senior postdoctoral fellow and lecturer in Design History and Theory at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Shapira is the author of Style and Seduction: Jewish Patrons, Architecture and Design in Fin de Siècle Vienna (Brandeis University Press, 2016). She is the editor of Design Dialogue: Jews, Culture and Viennese Modernism (Böhlau, 2018) and of the forthcoming anthology Designing Transformation: Jews and Cultural Identity in Central European Modernism (Bloomsbury, 2021). Shapira is further the coeditor of the following anthologies based on the proceedings of International Symposiums she has co-organized Freud and the Émigré (Palgrave, 2020) and of Émigré Cultures in Design and Architecture(Bloomsbury, 2017). Her forthcoming symposium organized together with Anne-Katrin Rossberg is “Gestalterinnen. Frauen, Design und Gesellschaft im Wien der Zwischenkriegszeit” will take place at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in May 2021.

Sigrid Brell-Cokcan & Johannes Braumann are the founding directors of the Association for Robots in Architecture whose goal is to make industrial robots accessible for creative industry, artists, designers and architects by sharing ideas, research results and technological developments. Founded in December 2010, Robots in Architecture is an open platform engaged in applied research, software and hardware development, and “robot pedagogics” – and in the question: how soon will robots revolutionize architecture? In 2011, Robots in Architecture presented KUKA | prc (“parametric robot control”), a plugin for Grasshopper that enables robot control from within architectural software. Sigrid and Johannes pursue the association’s goals through workshops, lectures, and via the international conference Rob|Arch, which first ran in 2012. In addition to steering the Association for Robots in Architecture, Sigrid Brell-Cokcan is one of the founding partners of II Architects Istanbul/ Vienna. She has previously worked with Coop Himmelblau, Frank Gehry, Peter Cook and Bollinger & Grohmann on projects such as Kunsthaus Graz, MARTA Herford and BMW World Munich. Ms Brell-Cokcan has been teaching design, geometry and fabrication classes in the field of architecture and industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the University of Technology Vienna. Her current research focuses on the design and computation of large scale freeform structures, computer aided manufacturing and design immanent robotic fabrication. Association for Robots in Architecture co-founder Johannes Braumann is the main developer of KUKA|prc (parametric robot control). His research on robotic fabrication has been presented at many international peer-reviewed conferences and published in research journals and books. Additionally, Braumann teaches both technical classes and design studios at TU Vienna. He is a graduate of Master Building Science and Technology, and a fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

State University of New York in Buffalo. /// The restoration and conservation of paintings and sculptures was never just a question of style and composition, but also a question of materiality. Similarly, the restoration and conservation of media art works is never just a question of concept, but more than ever a question of materiality. What will museums do with art works whose deterioration is foreseeable, be they the chocolate sculptures of Dieter Roth or magnetic tape or data storage. My thesis is: storage space is expanding infinitely, storage time is imploding at ever shorter intervals. The shortage of resources is the fate of the technical storage media and of the technical arts, from neon lamps to television sets. Born in Odessa in 1944, Peter Weibel studied literature, medicine, logic, philosophy and film in Paris and Vienna. Between 1986 and 1995, he was in charge of the Ars Electronica in Linz, he c ommissioned the Austrian pavilions at the Venice Biennale from 1993 to 1999. From 1993 to 1998 he was chief curator at the Neue Galerie Graz, Austria, and since 1999 he is Chairman and CEO of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe.
