We hear over and over in the news about issues surrounding the estates of artists and how family members or caretakers are having control over the artwork and sales. There are lawsuits, family discord, issues with heirs mismanaging the remaining collection of artworks and stories of others involved in the artist's careers or at the end of their lives taking advantage of the artist's success. Joining me today is Kelly Juhasz, principal of Fine Art Appraisal and Services, to talk about how artists can better plan for their own legacy to ensure that their reputations and remaining artworks are handled properly and reduce the opportunity for mismanagement. In this episode Kelly will answer questions such as: What is artist legacy planning? Why should artist's care about what happens to their work after they pass? What are some of the biggest issues that Kelly has seen in working with artist's estates What can living artists do to start to prepare for their own legacy?

Tere Arcq is arguably the world's leading expert on the life and work of artist Remedios Varo, as well as a specialist in women surrealist artists overall. She was Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico and director of an International Art Investment Fund. As an independent curator, she has creates and produces exhibitions in Mexico and abroad including including The Adventures of Women Surrealists in Mexico and the United States, an international project presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The National Museum of Fine Arts in Quebec, and The Modern Art Museum in Mexico. She has also contributed to countless exhibitions, most recently as a contributing curator of the astounding Surrealism Beyond Borders show that is up now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through January 20th, 2022. Tere edited and wrote for the monograph The Five Keys to the Secret World of Remedios Varo, and has contributed to many publications on Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and other surrealist artists. With Susan L. Aberth, she wrote the book, The Tarot of Leonora Carrington. Tere has also collaborated in the production of documentaries and short films on artists, and she has also designed and organized specialized art tours for collectors. She is a frequent lecturer at museums, institutions, and universities worldwide. Jaamil Olawale Kosoko is a Nigerian American poet, curator, and performance artist originally from Detroit, MI. He is a 2017-2019 Princeton Arts Fellow, a 2018 NEFA National Dance Project Award recipient, a 2018-20 New York Live Arts Live Feed Artist-in-Residence, a 2019 Gibney DiP Artist-in-Residence, a 2017 Jerome Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Abrons Arts Center, a 2017 Cave Canem Poetry Fellow, a 2016 Gibney Dance boo-koo resident artist, and a recipient of a 2016 USArtists International Award from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. His previous work #negrophobia (premiered September 2015, Gibney Dance Center) was nominated for a 2016 Bessie Award and has toured throughout Europe having appeared in major festivals including Moving in November (Finland), TakeMeSomewhere (UK), SICK! (UK), Tanz im August (Berlin), Oslo Internasjonale Teaterfestival (Norway), Zurich MOVES! (Switzerland), Beursschouwburg (Belgium) and Spielart Festival (Munich). Wozu sollte man heute noch alleine sein? Es ist heute relativ einfach dem auszuweichen. Es wird einem fast aufgezwungen, sich nicht einsam zu fühlen.   Das Gefühl von Einsamkeit kann sehr weh tun, vor allem, wenn wir uns nicht mit anderen Dingen ablenken. I am pleased to introduce you to Olivia Malabuyo Tablante, currently the Administrative Manager at the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation where she also manages the arts commissioning awards program in partnership with William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Prior to joining as Gerbode Foundation’s Program Assistant in 2006, Olivia had served as Los Cenzontles Mexican Art Center’s Administrative Manager and the Production Manager for its PBS series Cultures of Mexico in California, from 2004 to 2006. She was also a Managing Director of San Francisco’s black box theater, Bindlestiff Studio, and worked over five years with tenants and owners, development corporation in senior and affordable housing development. This ART OF HUSTLE episode features one of the best grants hustlers I've ever met. Joan Osato has played a pivotal role in local and national theater for well over a decade. She served as director of Asian American Theater Company from 1997 - 2000 and currently sits on its advisory board. She served as Youth Speaks' Managing Director from 2001-2007 and has been an Producer, Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Production Manager, and Lighting Designer with the Living Word Project. She has brought her multiplicity of production and design talents to Living Word Project Repertory works such as The Break/s, Word Becomes Flesh, Scourge, and Mirrors in Every Corner. She is the inaugural recipient of the San Francisco Arts Commission Artist and Communities Partnership Grant for a project she is conducting through Asian American Recovery Services of San Francisco. She is also a self-taught documentary photographer. Her photography has exhibited at SF Camerawork and Meridian Gallery, and has graced the album cover designs of iconic bands such as Faith No More. She has been considered for prestigious awards such as the Prix de la Photographie, and awarded an Exhibition in The Bay Area Currents 2009. ART OF HUSTLE introduces you to the Executive Director of Joe Goode Performance Group, Dave Archuletta. Prior to joining Joe Goode Performance group Dave served as Program Director for Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, where he built the Company's first education and licensing programs from the ground up, increased earned income revenue by more than 60 percent, negotiated major commissioning agreements and oversaw the Company’s U.S. and international tours. Prior to joining the BTJ/AZ Dance Company, he was Managerial Associate in the Dance Division of IMG Artists, managing the touring and performance operations of major dance companies such as Twyla Tharp, Lyon Opera Ballet, Pilobolus, Miami City Ballet, and more. An honors graduate of UC Berkeley, Dave began his career in San Francisco as Curatorial Performing Arts Production Coordinator at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Dave is also an independent musician and producer. Dave "Daveytree" Archuletta has been producing music in the underground scene for over 10 years. He plays several instruments, including piano, bass and drums. Dave is a founding member of the Funk Force Collective, and the visionary SF band Run the Voodoo Down (one of the first live music acts to incorporate turntablism as a primary musical element, featuring DMC Wold Champion DJ Pash "Mackintosh" Kamber on the wheels of steel). He has produced albums for Nidecker Snowboards, LRG clothing, the Mission Burrito Project, the Funk Force Collective, and the independent release "Noah D & B.Ski Soon to Be." In 2009 "Breez Deez Treez" with rapper Breez Evahflowin, was released on Domination Recordings to wide critical acclaim. She was born in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA from UC Berkeley. Her work has been exhibited in the Bay Area at the Berkeley Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Southern Exposure, Richmond Art Center, and Kearny Street Workshop, nationally at New Image Art (Los Angeles), Nora Eccles Harrison Museum (Salt Lake City), thirtynine hotel (Honolulu), and internationally at Future Prospects (Philippines), Galerie Blanche (France), and Osage Gallery Kwun Tong (Hong Kong). She is also 1/3 of the manic, brilliant, highly delusional artist trio Mail Order Brides/M.O.B. They have collaborated on a variety of shenanigans for venues including the DeYoung Museum, Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Southern Exposure, the National Asian American Film Festival, The San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and the McColl Center for Visual Art. Wofford has worked in arts education for over a decade, with schools and organizations including the University of San Francisco, UC Berkeley, California College of the Arts, Diablo Valley College, SFMoMA, Casa De Los Jovenes, Leadership High School, First Graduate, City Arts and Tech High School, and Out Of Site. Her awards include the Eureka Fellowship, the Murphy Fellowship, and grants from the Art Matters Foundation, UCIRA, and the Pacific Rim Research Program. She has also undertaken artist residencies at The Living Room, Philippines, Solyst Artist in Residence Center, Denmark, and Chateau de la Napoule, France.
