Lewis got incredible access to Sam Bankman-Fried, the billionaire behind the spectacular FTX fraud. His book is a bestseller, but some critics say he went too easy on S.B.F. Who is to blame for Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto crimes? Is he to blame? Is it the system? God? His parents? The spaghetti monster? Dan begins to unpack this question in this Sense & Signal micro cast. He discusses the essay Sam Bankman—Fried's mother Barbara Fried wrote on blame and moral responsibility in the Boston Review, the concept of hard determinism versus libertarian free will in terms of the Sam Bankman-Fried case, interrogates Barbara Fried's position that there can be no blame if there is no free will, shares dissenting comments about Barbara Fried's stance on determinism and free will from Princeton philosophy professor Gideon Rosen, and reflects on the literary level of irony of this article in light of the criminal charges Sam Bankman-Fried and his parents face. In this segment of the Sense & Signal podcast, Dan reflects on the Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) verdict and what it can teach us about Imagology and ethics. Dan reviews the general fraud and conspiracy case against Sam Bankman-Fried, FTX, and Alameda Research. He gives Sam Bankman-Fried a dark quadrant performance review to determine if he is narcissistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, or sadistic. He then discusses Sam Bankman-Fried's rise to fame and fortune through the lens of Imagology and ponders whether the West's fixation on youthful disruptors played a role in his success with the media. He also explores the ethical aspects of the case especially in regards to Sam Bankman-Fried's parents Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried - who are scholars on economic ethics. Finally, ponders the ironies in the case especially in the context of cryptocurrency, blockchain, and Web 3.0. This case reinforces the need for more ethical leadership training, the need for more scrutiny of the cryptocurrency markets, and awareness of the impact of Imagology. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-tarker/message
FTX has sued Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, the parents of Sam Bankman-Fried, claiming they enriched themselves by siphoning off millions of dollars in “fraudulently transferred and misappropriated funds” from the cryptocurrency exchange their son founded. In a court filing earlier this week, the FTX debtors said Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, both of whom are tenured professors at Stanford Law School, used their influence to funnel money from the business to themselves and their pet charitable causes.Bankman, a tax lawyer, also lavished gifts upon his friends and family using FTX funds, they alleged, including, flights and tickets to the Formula One Grand Prix in France.Fried used her influence to obtain millions of dollars in donations from Bankman-Fried and an associate for Mind the Gap, a Super Pac she co-founded to help Democrats win office in the 2020 US election cycle. She further pressured “certain FTX Insiders to unlawfully avoid (if not violate) federal campaign finance law”, the debtors allege.Patrick's Books:Statistics For The Trading Floor: https://amzn.to/3eerLA0Derivatives For The Trading Floor: https://amzn.to/3cjsyPFCorporate Finance: https://amzn.to/3fn3rvCPatreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinanceBuy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/patrickboyleVisit our website: www.onfinance.orgFollow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoyleThe full legal complaint: https://dm.epiq11.com/case/ftx/infoPatrick Boyle YouTube ChannelUranium Spotlight: Nuclear's Resurgence in a Clean Energy WorldA weekly podcast on uranium fuel market trends and its global energy impact.
Ties of this story to Real estate have peaked my interest. #1 was the notice of bond being tied to his parents home on the Stanford campus#2 was the use of the word commingling of funds, which is also a big no-no word in Real Estate#3 was alleged use of those funds to by real estate in other countries such as the Bahamas. Bankman-Fried [SBF] will be back at the home he grew up in, a house in the middle of Stanford's campus, according to federal political filings that disclose the address. He will remain under house arrest, but can leave for substance use treatment, exercise and mental health purposes. US District Judge Gabriel Gorenstein signed off on the deal Thursday, allowing the disgraced FTX founder and ex-CEO — who is staring down a slew of charges which carry a sentence of up to 115 years — to leave New York for his home state. In granting him pretrial release, Gorenstein said Bankman-Fried had "achieved sufficient notoriety that it would be impossible" for him to engage in further financial schemes or to hide without being recognized.Nicolas Roos, a prosecutor, told Gorenstein that the bail package would require Bankman-Fried to surrender his passport and remain in home confinement at his parents' home in Palo Alto, California. He would also be required to undergo regular mental health treatment and evaluation.Cohen [SBF Atty] said he agreed with prosecutors' proposed bail conditions. He noted that Bankman-Fried's parents - both Stanford Law School professors - would co-sign the bond and post the equity in their home as assurance for his return to court. Both appeared at the hearing. The record-breaking bond would be partially secured by Bankman-Fried's parents' interest in their five-bedroom, three-bathroom home — which Zillow estimates to be worth north of $4 million — and that equity would have to be paid within three weeks, Gorenstein said."My client remained where he was, he made no effort to flee," Cohen [SBF Atty] said. The bond is meant to ensure that if Bankman-Fried flees, the government could confiscate the family's assets - including their Palo Alto home - up to $250 million. Reuters could not determine the family's total net worth.Bankman-Fried said at a New York Times conference on Nov. 30, following the exchange's collapse, that he had $100,000 in his bank account.Roos [prosecutor] said that evidence at trial would consist of testimony from "multiple cooperating witnesses," [Ellison and Wang] as well as thousands of pages of written communications.Just hours after Bankman-Fried's plane from the Bahamas took off, Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, announced that two of Bankman-Fried's closest associates - former Alameda CEO Caroline Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang - had pleaded guilty and were cooperating with prosecutors. The alleged crypto grifter will be able to leave his parents' house for exercise, mental health and substance abuse treatment. He will also be allowed to shop online, but is banned from making any non-sanctioned payments above $1,000 that aren't legal fees, prosecutors said. Assistant US Attorney [the PROSECUTOR!!!] Nick Roos argued in favor of the house arrest, saying the fact that Bankman-Fried “voluntarily consented to extradition” from the Bahamas “should be given weight.”His $250 million bond is 25 times larger than the collateral that officials demanded from disgraced Ponzi scheme financier Bernie Madoff in 2009 [Judge Gabriel Gorenstein same judge giving bail to SBF].Damian Williams [lead prosecutor with Roos], the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Michael J. Driscoll, the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), announced the extradition of SAMUEL BANKMAN-FRIED, a/k/a “SBF,” yesterday from the Bahamas.[1] Also unsealed are the guilty pleas of CAROLINE ELLISON, former CEO of Alameda Research, and GARY WANG, co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of FTX. ELLISON and WANG pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams on December 19, 2022, to charges arising from their participation in schemes to defraud FTX's customers and investors, and related crimes, and are cooperating with the Government.Mr. Williams praised the investigative work of the FBI and thanked the FBI for its partnership in the extradition of Mr. Bankman-Fried and its investigation of wrongdoing associated with Alameda Research and FTX. Mr. Williams also thanked the Bahamas' government as well as the United States Embassy in the Bahamas for their extraordinary efforts in the arrest and return of the defendant to the United States to face these charges. He also expressed appreciation for the assistance of the Justice Department's Office of International Affairs. This case is being handled by the Office's Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicolas Roos and Danielle Sassoon are in charge of the prosecution. The Money Laundering and Transnational Criminal Enterprises Unit and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Samuel Raymond and Thane Rehn also contributed to the investigation. The allegations in the Indictment against BANKMAN-FRIED are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The [OLD CASE] prosecutor [Marc Litt] who put Bernie Madoff in federal prison for running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors of billions of dollars said Friday it's “highly unusual” for Sam Bankman-Fried to be speaking publicly about the November collapse of his crypto platform FTX amid widespread allegations of fraud.“It's highly unusual for a subject of a high-profile criminal investigation to be conducting media interviews and public appearances during which he discusses the conduct being investigated,” Marc Litt, who prosecuted Madoff for the Southern District of New York in 2009, told The Hill. “No criminal defense attorney [Cohen in this case] I know would recommend doing that, and no matter how careful Mr. Bankman-Fried thinks he can be, it's almost inevitable that something he says will come back to haunt him if charges are ever brought,” he said.[from 2008] NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Bail conditions for Bernard Madoff, the financier accused of one of the biggest frauds in Wall Street history, have been modified to include electronic monitoring, according to court documents released on Wednesday.U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein [same judge giving bail to SBF] said Madoff's wife Ruth was required to surrender her passport by noon on Thursday and said a hearing scheduled for Wednesday was canceled.“In light of this order and the agreement of both the defendant and the government to the changes in the bail conditions, there is no need for a further hearing on bail today,” the judge's written order said. “Accordingly, the hearing is canceled.” [old from 2008][Parents other home] Bankman-Fried's parents, Stanford University law professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, are reportedly listed as signatories on a beach house within the Old Fort Bay gated community. Sam Bankman-Fried claimed he didn't know how a $16.4 million Bahamas mansion got listed under his parents' names, insisting that it was meant to house staffers at his now-defunct FTX cryptocurrency exchange.“I don't know the details of the house for my parents,” Bankman-Fried told the New York Times' Andrew Ross Sorkin via Zoom at the newspaper's DealBook summit event in New York City on Wednesday. “I know it was not intended to be their long-term property. It was intended to be the company's property. I don't know how that was papered in.”Bankman-Fried's parents, Stanford University law professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, were listed as the owners of a home in a gated community on the Bahamas.Property records described the house as a “vacation home,” according to Reuters, which was the first to report the news. #1 the home is estimated to be worth about $4 mill according to Zillow. Realtor.com says about 3.2 mill Bankman-Fried's parents bought their cozy four-bedroom, three-bath home in 1992 for about $700,000 — close to $1.5 million in today's money — records show. BEFORE a just barely thirty-year-old man with a mop of brown hair would earn himself enough crypto-currency clout to be known simply by his initials -- SBF -- Sam Bankman-Fried was born on March 6th, 1992 on the campus of Stanford University. As the son of two Jewish Stanford Law professors, Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman, Sam spent a large percentage of his childhood playing games like chess, bridge, “Magic the Gathering” and the video game series “League of Legends” when he wasn't busy attending class at an elite prep-school known as Crystal Springs Uplands where he excelled academically in almost every subject. By the time he was ready to move onto a post-secondary institution, Sam set his sights on studying physics at Massachusetts' Institute of Technology where he wound up juggling several extracurriculars alongside his regular academic schedule while living in a co-ed group home called Epsilon Theta – a place that likes to promote itself as an alcohol-free zone for activities like playing board games, square dancing, and debating logic problems.

In Elizabeth Strout's latest novel, Lucy By the Sea, the central protagonist, Lucy Barton, goes through life with an essential question: what is it like to be you? Two people make me think about that question. The first is Joseph Bankman, who is the Ralph M. Parsons Professor of Law and Business at Stanford Law School. His academic expertise is tax law. He is the author of widely used casebooks with exciting names like Federal Income Taxation. But he is not just a tax nerd. He is a deeply caring and empathetic professor. He got an additional degree in clinical psychology so that he could be more helpful in counseling anxious law students. He also hosted a podcast called WellnessCast for Stanford Law School to discuss “wellness and mental health within the legal profession.” A tax scholar with heart. The other person I have been thinking about is Barbara Fried. She is the William W. and Gertrude H. Saunders Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. Her academic expertise is distributive justice, namely, how are the goods and services in our society distributed, and are they distributed fairly? She is a three-time winner of an award that recognizes excellence in teaching at Stanford Law. Barbara Fried is married to Joseph Bankman.

The implosion of crypto-giant FTX is nothing new. In fact, it's like an Enron situation with even the restructuring specialist John J. Ray III of Enron taking control of FTX now. Back in February, 2022, Ukraine's Parliament passed a law legalizing crypto currency. President Zelenskyy signed the law and set up a few weeks later ‘Aid for Ukraine', a website to accept crypto donations to fight the war against Russia and to buy bullets and bandages. It was instantly successful, raking in an initial $48-100 million dollars. This digital currency was then transformed into fiat money and put into the National Bank of Ukraine by FTX in an official partnership. The funds kept flowing along with hundreds of billions additional from the United States and largely from the Democratic Party. Much of this money then disappeared. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried put a backdoor into the system to transfer ten billion to a trading firm, Alameda, run by his girlfriend. Upwards of 2 billion dollars of client money is also missing on top of that. Large sums of money was then dumped back into the Democratic party making SBF the second largest campaign contributor to the party. Furthermore, his mother Barbara Fried is a professor at Stanford who believes in disruptive justice and new property theory, both of which come from the Saul Alinsky and his rules for Radicals, and the World Economic Forum, which scrubbed their website of any relation to FTX. This money laundering operation in Ukraine, with its cousin in the work of Hunter and Joe Biden, is just a bit of the con. It's all part of a process to nickel and coin you until you have nothing and enjoy it.

Episode #38 of ‘The Teddy Brosevelt Show' was recorded on Monday night, November 14th.This is the audio version of everything I just wrote about in my last Substack post, plus new allegations and information about Sam Bankman-Fried's mother BARBARA BANKMAN-FRIED (who publicly goes by her maiden name Barbara Fried) left-wing Super PAC Mind the Gap, which sent out 15 million pre-filled ballots in swing states and saw nearly 5 million returned. No one has really made the connection between Sam Bankman-Fried and his mother Barbara Fried's massive and highly illegal partisan ballot harvesting operation, which just so happened to provide almost the exact margins of victory that won the presidential election for Joe Biden in 2020, and won a number of critical races during the 2022 Midterms. NOTE: Earlier versions of this post mistakenly referred to Sam Bankman-Fried's mother Barbara Fried as “Linda”. His mom's name has been corrected to BARBARA. Teddy was physically and mentally exhausted when writing the original post and apologizes for the incredibly embarrasing mistake. Not only did this crypto criminal bilk a million investors out of billions on dollars - his illegally embezzled crypto cash was converted into fiat currency and sent to the USA to fuel the campaigns of hundreds of Democrat candidates. “Crypto Collapse Connect the Dots: FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried's Family, FTX Colleagues, the Democrat Party, Joe Biden and Ukraine”This show breaks down the still-unfolding scandal involving the collapse of FTX and its criminal founder. We dive deep into: Sam Bankman-Fried, his family, his colleagues at FTX, his massive donations to the Democratic Party and his connections in the D.C. Swamp and to the SEC.It appears this could be the biggest scandal of the 21st Century.Get your popcorn ready folks. Episode #37 of ‘The Teddy Brosevelt Show' was recorded on Friday morning, November 11th. This 65 minute episode is the second half of Teddy “Election Integrity Enthusiast” Brosevelt's two hour analysis of the Midterm Elections and the peculiar ballot counting methods used by Arizona and Nevada to slow-walk the results. We also analyze the shady ass connections between Sam Bankman-Fried and a whole host of Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and dozens of Democrats in Congress. Episode XXXVII Topics: * Prediction: Arizona will finally announce that Kari Lake and Blake Masters both lost by narrow margins on Sunday afternoon - midway through the 3rd quarter of the NFL game between the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams. * 238 million Americans did NOT vote in the 2022 Midterm elections. Was it apathy, laziness or people who became so disillusioned after the 2020 election theft that they didn't even bother to cast a ballot? I don't think we will be able to vote our way out of Communism. * Nancy Pelosi had the most to lose in the Midterm elections. We might never find out what really happened with the Paul Pelosi attack. Teddy thinks Pelosi got hammered in multiple ways that night. He must have been hammered on alcohol to open the door for the cops and then go back to wrestling with the hammer. No matter what happens, it was mission accomplished for Pelosi and the Dems. Joe Biden used that suspicious incident as the foundation of his angry speech attacking Republicans and the leftist media ran with the propaganda. * Alex Jones now owes $1.4 BILLION to the Sandy Hook parents. That's bigger than the GDP of at least 20 countries. Has their ever been a verdict against an individual this huge? Hell no. Alex Jones now has been fined more than all the actual murderers and mass shooters who have ever lived around the world since the dawn of time *combined* for having the nerve to ask questions. This totally insane judgement is meant to send a message to anyone who dares question the “official narrative” - if you speak up, you will be sued for a Powerball jackpot-sized sum of money. Coming in 2023: the grand opening of the first U.S. Federal Debtor's Prison in Guantánamo Bay. * Right before Teddy was getting ready to record this show, the news broke that crypto exchange FTX was filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. This is notable from a political perspective for multiple reasons. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried had donated $40 million to Democrat candidates and Super PACs during the 2022 Midterm elections. And Bankman-Fried made huge waves earlier this year when he announced that he expects to spend “north of $100 million" in 2024, with a “soft ceiling” of $1 billion.* Turns out this guy is a total scam artist who bilked millions of crypto investors out of roughly $10 billion in deposits to prop up his own shitcoin FTT. None of these customers can withdrawal their funds today, and it's almost certain they money they deposited with FTX is gone forever. * This multi-billion dollar scandal is exponentially worse than anything Enron or Bernie Madoff could ever dream of doing. Sam Bankman-Fried used his fraudulently obtained billions to curry major power and influence in Washington, D.C. Thanks to his $40 million in political donations, “crypto executives landed hearings on Capitol Hill and helped to secure backing for amendments to President Joe Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure bill”. * Sam Bankman-Fried was the “primary force” behind the Protect Our Future PAC, which has raised more than $14 million and made heavy donations to key House races in Ohio and Oregon, among others. Protect Our Future PAC was established in January 2022 to “help elect candidates who will be champions for pandemic prevention.” * SEC Commission Chair Gary Gensler totally fell for Bankman-Fried's b******t - hook, line and sinker. Gensler and Congressional Democrats were basically ready to give Bankman-Fried a blank piece of paper and let him personally craft crypto regulations that would greatly benefit FTX. * Fortune magazine: “The problem is that cop-on-the-beat Gensler not only failed to spot the crime—he appeared set to go along with a legislative strategy that would have given SBF a regulatory moat and made him king of the U.S. crypto market.”* Fun fact: Gary Gensler was a former campaign finance chair for Hillary Clinton. You can't make this s**t up, folks. It's a big ol' corrupt cartel of criminals. * Even Tom Brady, Steph Curry and the Miami Heat fell for this scam. Man, I never thought I would feel pity for Tom Brady, but that guy is having the worst year of his life. Here's the world's smallest violin playing for Tom Brady. But he pushed this scam in TV ads and surely helped convince thousands of gullible suckers that FTX was legit, secure and safe. * Fun fact: Bankman-Fried's mom Barbara Fried is a lawyer who once worked for Hillary Clinton. She is currently teaching law at Staford University and is the co-founder of Mind the Gap, a pro-Democratic super PAC. * From Influence Watch: “Mind the Gap (MTG) is a left-wing super PAC dedicated to helping Democratic political candidates win elections. The PAC earns millions of dollars in donations primarily from Silicon Valley executives “who are keen on quietly funneling massive political donations into the Democratic Party”* What the hell is Elon Musk doing with Twitter? He's gotten billions of free handouts and tax breaks with Tesla, and has lucrative billion-dollar deals with the U.S. government through SpaceX. I have no idea who you can trust anymore on Clown Planet. Except for dogs. Dogs are the best. Thanks for reading Teddy Brosevelt! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Yglesias on EA and politics, published by Richard Y Chappell on May 23, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. [Updated to a full cross-post, with thanks to Matt for permitting this.] Last Tuesday, the most expensive open House primary in history wrapped up with Andrea Salinas, a well-qualified state legislator, winning handily against a large field in which the second-place contender was a political neophyte named Carrick Flynn. Millions of dollars were spent on behalf of Salinas, largely by Bold PAC, the super PAC for Hispanic House Democrats. But a much larger sum of money was spent on Flynn's behalf by a super PAC called Protect Our Future, which is largely funded by Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. While Flynn and SBF had never met before the campaign, Flynn is a longtime effective altruist and member of the EA community (see his interview with Vox's EA vertical Future Perfect), and SBF has recently emerged as the biggest donor in the EA space. Daniel Eth of the Oxford Future of Humanity Institute wrote a good piece on lessons for the EA movement from the campaign, but speaking from a media and politics perspective, I want to underline with the boldest possible stroke that I think the most important lesson from the race is the extent to which Flynn was understood to be the “crypto candidate” rather than the “EA candidate.” Dave Wasserman @Redistrict I've seen enough. State Rep. Andrea Salinas (D) wins the Dem primary for the new #OR06, defeating crypto-backed Carrick Flynn (D). Salinas would be the first Latina elected to Congress from Oregon. @CookPolitical November rating: Likely D. May 18th 2022 1,116 Retweets7,990 Likes That's in part because of hostile messaging from his opponents (which is fair enough, it's politics) but also because Flynn didn't really talk about effective altruism until quite late. His campaign did discuss pandemic prevention — the top current priority for SBF and a topic Flynn has a background in — but not much about the movement or the ideas until the final weeks of the race. The judgment that EA is unfamiliar to most voters and sounds a bit weird was perfectly reasonable. But you can't dump $12 million into a random House race without people wondering what's up. I think SBF's ideas, as I understand them, are pretty good, and I hope that his efforts to spend money to influence American politics succeed. But to succeed, I think ultimately he's going to have to persuade people that his agenda really is what he says it is. Part of that will require fostering a broader familiarity with EA, and to that end, I wanted to write about the space as I understand it and its significance and insights. Consequentialism briefly explained I can't speak to contemporary academia, but when I was in college the family of moral theories known as consequentialism were pretty unfashionable in philosophy departments. My understanding is that this has been true for most of the past two or three generations. Probably the easiest way to gloss consequentialism is with reference to the famous trolley problem thought experiment: a consequentialist is someone who wants to throw the switch and cause one person to be run over in order to avoid the deaths of five people. Perhaps more scandalously, opponents of consequentialism often argue that it follows from this position that it is morally appropriate (perhaps even obligatory) to murder innocent people and harvest their organs in order to save multiple lives. Barbara Fried, a Stanford legal theorist and philosopher who also happens to be Bankman-Fried's mother, has a great paper arguing that we should talk less about trolley problem scenarios. Her point is that the many variations of trolley problems share an artificial certainty about outcomes that is very unusual for a policy choice. A real...

In this episode, left and right libertarianism is discussed. It is argued, with support of Nozick's “Anarchy, State, Utopia” that right libertarianism is the most plausible theory of justice. Entitlement Theory is analyzed as well as justice in transfer, acquisition, and rectification. Barbara Fried's critique of Nozick's Wilt Chamberlain argument is also presented.
