Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Max Barrett, who works as a sales and marketing manager at his family business in sustainability, helping design engineers make more sustainable decisions. Max has a filmmaking background and broadcast journalism, too, and has previously presented film reviews on BBC Radio Kent, and we talk about the way we keep archives of our film reviews. Max grew up in Kent, and has lived in Canterbury since he was 16.  There is also a South Wales connection as his mother is from Swansea. We learn that Wales and Medway are gravitational pulls for him, and we find out how Max's interests in sustainability began. Max is also involved with pool tournaments, and we find out how sustainability, artwork and snooker also play a big role in his life. He has even hosted murder mystery parties that he has written himself. Max studied film production at Canterbury Christ Church University and he speaks about how collaborative his tutors were. We also learn about Max's passion for Lego animation when he was in school, and we find out about the Rising Star award he received at a film festival, as well as a film about dementia which he made at the height of the pandemic. We learn that he would love to make a feature film in the spirit of Jim Jarmusch and that Max made a buddy movie a few years ago when he was at university on his phone. He explains how it became a diary of his time at university and has an important legacy dimension. It may go public when Max retires! We also discuss the out of date elements in the film Dodgeball and about our perceptions of time, and we learn how his younger self was crazily ambitious. At the end of the interview we find out how Max is a looking back or a looking forward type of person depending on the time of day.

Dan comments on the clash over immigration, abortion, and the economy. Kamala Harris criticized Trump for his ego-driven approach and lack of focus on the needs of the American people. Trump criticized American military aid to Ukraine and accused Harris of having no economic plans. Overall, Dan concludes that Harris came out on top, winning over independent and undecided voters. The debate could have a significant impact on the polls, especially with endorsements from celebrities like Taylor Swift. Over Here, Over There podcast host Dan Harris discusses with BBC Radio Kent's Steve Ladner the election of a new Speaker of the House, (R-LA) Michael Johnson. 'Finally, the nightmare in the US House of Representatives is finally different' (as opposed to over), so says late-night host Stephen Colbert. After three weeks of paralysis, the new House Speaker, second in line to the Presidency, is Representative Michael Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana. Not well known even by colleagues in Congress, many of whom had to Google him to learn more, Mr. Johnson talked cordially in the spirit of bipartisanship towards the Democrats in his acceptance speech. His quiet history tells otherwise, however. As a MAGA loyalist, he was one of the chief architects of the GOP's campaign to decertify the 2020 U.S. presidential election in the House of Representatives. With severe challenges both at home and abroad, how he will use the powerful Speaker's gavel, only time will tell. Have a listen.

GB2RS News Sunday the 22nd of October 2023 The news headlines: RSGB 2023 Convention ARISS contact with St Peter-In-Thanet CE Junior School Tonight@8 webinar The RSGB's 2023 Convention took place last weekend and brought together hundreds of amateurs in person as well as many more across the world who watched the livestream. RSGB General Manager and Convention Chair, Steve Thomas, M1ACB said that in addition to the usual varied programme of lectures, he was delighted as Convention Chair to have led the team that introduced new aspects to the weekend, such as the all-day drop-in Buildathon on Saturday which encouraged people to enjoy making something for themselves, and also to learn how to run a similar event at their local club or group to help others develop practical skills. The RSGB Convention saw presentations about taking amateur radio into schools, young radio amateurs travelling to YOTA camp, as well as the usual mix of fascinating technical talks about many aspects of amateur radio today. There were also more RSGB Committees and Groups at the Convention to highlight the important work that the RSGB does through its volunteers. Steve said that the Convention planning team is already receiving an overwhelming amount of positive feedback, but he encourages anyone who attended the Convention to complete the feedback form if they haven't already done so - go to rsgb.org/feedback and share your thoughts. The Society will share a small number of Convention presentations on YouTube over the coming weeks and will provide many more for members to view as part of the benefit of RSGB membership. In addition, you will be able to watch a series of special interviews that were recorded over the weekend. The interview with the RSGB and IRTS Presidents has been released this week and you can see it on the RSGB YouTube channel and also on the RSGB Convention web page at rsgb.org/convention  Children at St Peter-In-Thanet CE Junior School in Broadstairs, Kent had an ‘out of this world' experience this week, with an ARISS contact between the school and NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, KI5WSL on board the International Space Station. It was an exciting and inspiring day for all involved. RSGB Board Chair Stewart Bryant, G3YSX attended the event and met ESA reserve astronaut Meganne Christian, who encouraged the children to ‘dream big'. The event, which featured on local BBC and ITV news programmes that evening as well as BBC Radio Kent, can be watched on the ARISS YouTube channel. The RSGB polled its Facebook group for new and returning licensees, which showed that basic introductions to contesting and antennas were the top two topics of interest. In October the RSGB ran a Tonight@8 webinar which covered an introduction to contesting, and in November it is focusing on antennas. On Monday the 6th of November, Colin Summers, MM0OPX will give an entry-level introduction to antennas generally, including a focus on end-fed half-wave antennas, transformers, construction and performance. Join the presentation and ask questions live on the RSGB YouTube channel or special BATC channel. To find out more about this, and other RSGB webinars, go to rsgb.org/webinars Today is the last day of Jamboree on the Air, also known as JOTA. The event promotes friendship and global citizenship and is a brilliant celebration of amateur radio among the Scout Association. There are many stations active over the weekend so please listen out for the young operators on the air. Some groups have shared details of callsigns that are active over the weekend and the RSGB has compiled a list on its website – go to rsgb.org/jota and choose the “JOTA Stations on the Air” link on the right hand side of the page. The RSGB would love to see your photos of Scouts getting involved with JOTA, so tag the RSGB and also use the hashtag JOTAJOTI to be involved in the conversation on social media. There will be a report in RadCom so please send details and photos from your event to radcom@rsgb.org.uk by the 14th of November. A reminder that the RSGB National Radio Centre will be closed to the public from Saturday the 28th of October until Sunday the 5th of November inclusive because Bletchley Park will be hosting the first global summit on Artificial Intelligence. Please note that this closure period includes an additional two days than was previously announced by Bletchley Park. Using SSB on the 160 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and CQ Zone. The UK is in Zone 14. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 19th of October 2023 We had a quieter week, with both lower sunspot numbers and better geomagnetic conditions. The Solar Flux Index was at 135 on Thursday the 19th, down from 156 the week before. Let's hope this is a temporary lull in Solar Cycle 25's progression. We had no M-class or higher flares to contend with and the Kp index was generally below 3 all week. Only on Thursday did things start to become a little more unsettled as the Kp index climbed to 3.67 in the morning, with warnings that worse may be to come due to a coronal mass ejection on the 16th of October. So, the earlier part of the week was best for HF propagation with many stations reporting DX contacts including T2C, a German DXpedition to Tuvalu, and YL2GM's one-person DXpedition to Tristan da Cuhna. It's nice to see DX opening up, especially on the higher bands. Propquest.co.uk reports that, generally, the maximum useable frequency over a 3,000km path remains above 28MHz during daylight hours so make the most of the 10 and 12m bands. The maximum usable frequency, or MUF, is the highest radio frequency that can be used for transmission between two points on the Earth by reflection from the ionosphere. Next week NOAA predicts that the Solar Flux Index will rise to around 145 all week while geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be stable with a Kp around 2 to 3. But, as always, watch out for coronal mass elections and their impact. And now the VHF and up propagation news We are struggling to find anything optimistic regarding Tropo in this unsettled spell of weather and again it may well be down to rain scatter to provide the entertainment. Once out of the summer thunderstorm season, the results are rarely as good, even though you'll be spoiled for choice! There will be a transient weak ridge over some eastern areas on Tuesday, but only acts as a separator between the lows and is not expected to be effective for Tropo. Incidentally, in this fairly typical spell of unsettled autumnal weather, strong winds and heavy rain can be a notable feature and put stress on antennas and coax, so make a note of any weak points and use the next fine spell to put things right! What propagation remains is the usual stop-gap pair of modes – meteor scatter and aurora – both of which could be worth checking during the coming week. A reminder that the Orionids shower, active from the 2nd of October to the 7th of November, peaks today, the 22nd, with an average Zenithal Hourly Rate, or ZHR, of around 20. For EME operators, Moon declination reached minimum on Friday the 20th so the following week will see lengthening Moon windows. Next Thursday's perigee means path losses are at their lowest this week. 144MHz sky noise starts high but falls throughout the coming week remaining low to moderate. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom chats with Leo Ulph who fronts the band Wake Up Leo. However, he's probably better known as the presenter of BBC Radio Kent's Upload show, where he has featured clips for the documentary episodes of this very podcast along with a host of other podcasts, poets, bands and artists over the last couple of years. Leo also produces broadcasting legend Gabby Roslin's show on BBC Radio London. This conversation covers all sorts of musical experiences as both a fan, a broadcaster and a player, including the question 'why is Ed Sheeran so popular?', how meeting your heroes can be a good thing, how he got into the radio business and the power of saying 'yes' (and then working really hard!). During the course of the interview we also manage to draw a line from his early days of playing music and telling jokes between his early songs, for fear they weren't good enough, to the style in which he presents his radio show. You can find him on Facebook, Twitter (@WakeUpLeo) and Instagram (@wakeupleo_1). Wake Up Leo's website is www.wakeupleo.com and you can also find them on Facebook, Soundcloud, ReverbNation, Spotify, and Apple Music.  I think you'll agree that Leo's a great guy and really engaging, and I'd like to thank him very much for his time, especially as he was getting over a Covid infection at the time, what a trooper... and just think, if he's this chipper when he's feeling under the weather, imagine how much more energy he has when he's 100%! Welcome to the Cracking Content Podcast, helping entrepreneurs to amplify their expertise through storytelling, content, and PR so they can get more sales and make a bigger impact. Every business has a story to tell. Don't be afraid to tell it. In this episode, I'm going to be talking to Becca Heaps, the founder of Tentshare, and also the curator of Tentival 2021. It is really exciting to have Becca on the podcast for lots of reasons; we've worked together, she's been a client of mine, she's done some of my courses, and also does coaching with me. But I'm more excited about her new project, Tentival 2021. {1:09} Rebecca: I'm Rebecca, founder of Tentshare, which is a people to people, tent lending platform. So, the idea is that if you've got a tent, it's an asset. So, you can pop it on the Tentshare website and rent it out to someone local to you, and make a bit of extra money at the weekend. But also if you'd like to go camping and you don't want to invest in a big old tent, or invest in a tent that you may only use once or twice, you can go onto the Tentshare website and rent the tent that would be appropriate for your camping trip. {2:00} Rebecca: From that has grown Tentival. I hosted and curated Tentival last year, 10 days after lock down. Because I was absolutely gutted that there was going to be no more festivals, plus I'd launched Tentshare, and I wanted people to pitch up their tents and have a lovely day looking at each other's tents, and having a glorious day outside. So, that's how Tentival started. And this year, I'm bring Tentival 2021, which is coming back bigger, and better, and brighter, and more sparkly than before. {3:09} Rebecca: There are a lot of virtual festivals and events being streamed online. But the thing that's very different about Tentival is it is interactive. {5:01} Rebecca: So, the idea is that you pitch up a tent in your garden, or you go to a park, maybe take a picnic, bring a device. As long as you've got a device and the internet, you can access this festival from anywhere. {10:04} Claire: Can you tell us a bit about your content marketing journey with this business? Rebecca: I launched it February 2020, and then a really lovely friend gifted me a four-week course, Pitch the Press course, which happened to be yours Claire.  And it landed in my lap at just the right time. And I went on that four-week course, and my goodness, what a lot of information I learned. And by the end of it, I had pitched. I'd been in The Mirror. I'd had an interview on BBC Radio Kent and I've been in a camping magazine. {12:04} Claire: It's just been phenomenal watching you grow your business and grow awareness about what you're doing. And obviously, you're really active on Clubhouse as well, and you've made some great connections there, which has enabled you to take Tentival to the next level. {12:25} Rebecca: You invited me into Clubhouse. And whoa, it's just been incredible. The contacts that I've made, and the people. And once you're in there and you find your people, and you're all like-minded and in alignment with all your ethos, it's just incredible. It's been great finding people who, at last, I feel like I have a voice, where I haven't felt I've had a voice before. So, it's been wonderful. So, I've got you to thank for that as well, Claire. {12:59} Claire: I think that is probably my mission. I've been redefining it, and it is, it's like helping women amplify their reach, and find their true, authentic voice and share it with the world. I think it's needed more than ever. {16:17} Rebecca: For every ticket sold, we're going to plant a tree. We've teamed up with Tree Sisters, and they do an amazing initiative planting trees where they're most needed and where they're most effective. And tickets are pay as you can. So, we don't want wealth or lack of wealth, especially coming out of COVID, when people haven't been able to work and such, to be a barrier to coming to the festival. Tentshare offers a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for campers. Tentshare is committed to building a community of campers and novice campers sharing tents, equipment, and knowledge. During the Covoid-19 crisis, Rebecca curated and hosted the first lockdown, virtual festival, Tentival 2020. Rebecca also has a wide range of skills and experiences garnered over a career that has taken in more than 10 years as a primary school teacher in the borough of Hackney and a Stage, Lighting and Sound manager for several theatre and entertainment project. Bio:   Erika started her career in the music industry at the tender age of 16, working for a PR company who represented The Rolling Stones, U2, Prince, The Spice Girls and many more. One of her earliest highlights was when Cher sent her flowers by Cher to thank her for finding her favorite brand of mineral water when she ran out of it in the middle of the night!   She fell into the world of radio by complete accident in the mid-90s, co-hosting a show on London's Heart 106.2, a job she performed happily for 14 years. Since then, she has presented national breakfast shows, broadcast from the top of Sydney Harbor Bridge during the 2000 Olympics opening ceremony and can now be heard on the airwaves of BBC Radio Kent.   Erika was diagnosed with MS in 2008 and is now happy to put a spotlight on the trials and tribulations her condition bring, with a trademark sense of humor her listeners will be very familiar with!   Discussion Topics:   Erika’s life and MS journey How an MS diagnosis affects someone in a public-facing role How the public impression of MS is changing How Erika has adapted her lifestyle tothe OMS program How OMS is a healthy lifestyle for all How COVID-19 has affected Erika’s healthy habits   Links:   Erika's Twitter Feed   Coming up next:   Coming up next on Living Well with MS Coffee Break #11, premiering Monday, November 2, travel to the UK to meet Bron Webster, creator, producer and host of the new podcast, The MS Show.   Don’t miss out:   Subscribe to this podcast and never miss an episode. Happy 10th anniversary and welcome to our tenth installment of Living Well with MS Coffee Break, where we welcome Roy Bartlett as our guest! As you now know, we decided to do something a little different in expanding the range of content we produce here at Living Well with MS. To honor the community that forms the beating heart of Overcoming MS, this special series called Coffee Break features short interviews with members of the OMS community talking about their personal journeys adopting and staying on the OMS 7 Step Recovery Program, the challenges they encountered and how they overcame them, and their tips and tricks for sticking to the path that leads to better health. We hope you enjoy and learn from these intermezzos between our regular episodes, and as always, your comments and suggestions are always welcome by emailing podcast@overcomingms.org.   Bio:   Although diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988, Roy doesn’t let anything much slow him down.  He is no stranger to working in charitable organizations and was the founding president of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Asthma Society at the beginning of the 1980s.  From 1986 to the end of 2004 he worked for four different charities, including Alzheimer’s Auckland (1989-99).  Professor Sir Richard Faull, Director of the Centre for Brain Research and Patron of Alzheimer’s Auckland, describes Roy as “significantly changing the landscape of caring for people with dementia during the 1990s”.  In 2002 Roy and his wife Julie co-founded the award-winning charity StarJam, whose mission was to be the leading and most innovative catalyst for facilitating a positive societal change in attitude toward people with disabilities.  Together they set about creating national and international performance and limelight opportunities for young people with disabilities. StarJam continues today to help provide disabled children with a chance to build their confidence, develop their character, discover new friendships and enjoy the thrill of new hope and purpose, the benefits of which are also felt by their family, friends and the wider community.  Currently, Roy is an Ambassador for the Auckland OMS Circle.  He is also a foundation trustee of the The Sources of Unconditional Love Charitable Trust (SOUL), founded by his wife Julie in 2015.  SOUL’s mission is to replace prejudice and discrimination with unconditional love and respect.  Its position is an exclusively positive one aiming to empower teenage girls and young women to be free from the effects of prejudice and to inspire those who discriminate to instead choose unconditional love and respect.   Questions:   Can you tell us a little about yourself, your family, your life, where you live and anything about yourself you’d like to share.  When were you diagnosed with MS and how long have you been following the Overcoming MS 7 Step Recovery Program?  What is your favorite thing about the program, namely what do you feel has made the biggest positive impact?  What was your greatest challenge in adopting the OMS program, and how did you overcome it?  I know you’re quite active in the OMS community, and the ambassador of the Auckland Circle in New Zealand. Can you tell us how being a part of the community has informed your journey? How have you had to adapt your daily healthy habits to the new realities imposed by COVID-19?  Do you have any other tips or tricks you can share with our audience that might help them on their journeys?    Coming up on our next episode:   On the next full-length episode of Living Well with MS, launching in just one week on October 21, 2020, Geoff Allix welcomes Erika North, a veteran voice on UK radio and current a presenter for BBC Radio Kent, to discuss her personal OMS journey. Please have a listen to hear Erika’s unique and mellifluous perspective!   Don’t miss out:   Subscribe to this podcast and never miss an episode.
