How sweet does revenge taste? As sweet as Pancake Day, or as sweet as Valentine's Day chocolates? Nahhhhh as sweet as the Canadian maple syrup that Claire Gallagher had in her wheetabix! Jess and Jacob go over what pancake filling is best, and then more importantly, the massive Derby Day win away at Franklins Gardens, talking about the ramifications but also still plenty of room for improvement. In our news section, there's some exciting news about us setting up a Fantasy League for the Women's Six Nations and then we get confused as to whether it's called EQP or EPQ or even PEQ as we delve into the news that Tigers and Sale received points deductions last week for not meeting EQP averages in our match day squads. Then we talk about our hard-hitting South African second row Catha Jacobs for our player profile and talk about the state of women's rugby in South Africa and its growth since the start of the last women's World Cup. So join us for quality analysis including but not limited to Jess' preferred pancake toppings, Meg Jones getting slow clapped, how lineouts help doing Swing Dance aerials and more wild Amy Cokayne predictions from Jacob in episode 12 of the LTW Fancast.

Kristin Lowe, Center Director, and Jennifer Hodur, Field Programs Manager and Manager of Families of the Fallen, discussed Liberty USO, The USO of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The chapter serves active duty military and their families, including the thousands of activated National Guard who are stationed or who are sent to PA on training missions. Their primary Philadelphia site is at the Philadelphia International Airport, helping military and families passing through on another deployment with food and comfort. For the military they offer showers, cots, clean clothes and computer time, videos, games and movies. Families can find diapers, toys and supplies and volunteers ready to help. For parents deploying without their family, the USO will help them record a video of them reading a book, the book and video are then sent to their kids at home. The Families of the Fallen is another service at the airport, the closest commercial airport to Dover where fallen military are returned to them. Volunteers are with them through the journey. Kristin and Jennifer spoke of their volunteers, they donate thousands of hours each year manning the airport site, packing care packages to send to the deployed local military, creating ‘Battle Buddy' kits for moms and dads at Mother's and Fathers Day, back-to-school backpacks for military kids. They also help families connect through Coffee Hours, family events and fishing events. For military spouses whose career has been put on hold, they offer resume help and employment counseling. They discussed their needs, financial help allows them to expand their services, volunteers staff events and sites and in-kind donations of snacks, paper products and toiletries keep the Airport Center stocked. They are also in need of toys for their annual holiday party; they will be the recipient of the Beasley station 92.5 XTU's annual Toy Truck Parade. They also talked about events, including the October 14 Swing Dance on the Battleship New Jersey, a fun evening of dancing, silent auctions, swing dancing displays and BBQ. ‘40s styles are encouraged but not expected, just plan on having a fun evening under the stars on the riverfront. This is a bit of a different episode. Yesterday I spoke to Josh Gomez about how COVID-19 and the suspension of all dance activity is affecting not only our community of social dancers, but the teachers, artists, and musicians that rely on this industry for their income. Josh Gomez is a dancer and creative producer originally from Southern California, now based in London. He teaches a number of swing dances, as well as running jazz and entertainment nights in London, putting on some of the best parties I've been to. Since we've all had to start isolating, and for some of us - remaining in lockdown - dancers are coming up with creative and inspiring ways of keeping the community alive and sharing their art online. In this episode, we talked about how one can use platforms like Patreon to generate income as an artist, as well as ways to be resilient and creative in times of crisis. Thank you for listening to this episode and if you have any feedback at all, please reach out to me at hello@swingstuff.comToday we talked about some ways to handle what is a difficult set of circumstances - but if you have ideas and feedback to add, I would love to hear from you. www.swingstuff.com

As one of the teachers at the Groovy Cats swing dance studio in Prague, Czech Republic, Anastasia Feoktistova always encourages her students to be themselves and to never fear the difficulties they may encounter when starting out as a novice in swing dance. Originally from Russia, Anastasia now travels internationally to teach the art of swing dance to beginner and experienced dancers. While approaching dance as a fun activity for all who are interested, she continues to focus on and help dancers move past their perceived failures while on the dance floor. She emphasizes that we don't need an inherent special talent to dance and instills the confidence that is needed for all her trainees go outside their comfort zone.In this episode we will discuss:Going outside your comfort zone when learning a new skillNot quitting when an activity becomes challengingUnderstanding that being an instructor is also a way to learnSeeing dance as a conversation and connecting with your dance partnerEncouraging students in their beginner stages of dancingImmersing yourself in the social culture of danceQuotes:“Swing dancing is all about fun, it's about expressing yourself. Dancing to music which varies from the 1920s to 1950s. There is a pretty aesthetical feel. You learn a lot about culture about the way people used to have fun in the past years... It is about exchanging emotions while dancing, catching the same rhythm.” (4:24)“When I started to dance, I learned a lot of new things about myself. I started to think differently, I started to organize my life differently. I started to learn something new not only about dancing but the way I'm living, the way I'm dressing and the way I'm talking... This is actually something I started to do because I like the aesthetical component.”(11:47)“I find my own voice when I am teaching.”(13:00)“I didn't have any special talent. I started to dance when at the age of 20 and I didn't have any dance experience before. I had lots of failures, it didn't make me happy but I am happy right now because I didn't stop. I didn't surrender. I kept doing what I did.”(18:07)“I do encourage people to believe in the fact that they are talented.”(23:46)“You will discover a beautiful world if you try!”(34:00)Links:Groovy Cats Swing Dance Club Website:http://www.groovycats.cz/Groovy Cats Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/groovycats/Groovy Cats YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/user/GroovyCatsClub/ Sponsors: LadyBoss LadyBoss is a premium nutrition company that provides the best weight loss supplements in the world for women. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The family opened their restaurant in 2010 choosing the Bull Moose Bar and Grille name as a nod to the historical significance of the rail car. Yeah, yeah, another unenlightened man said something shocking about a woman's place in the world. How do we help people be teachable in these moments? We don't know the answer, but we banter about it today. We gush about Radio Kingston and the power in community radio to present diverse voices and stories so that we can all live more happily together! Executive director and landscape designer at Earth Designs Cooperative, Aja Hudson joins us in studio and talks about how she learned to prioritize life after cancer with a young daughter by building a worker cooperative and why it's important for us to start moving towards the cooperative model of living and working. Emily Vail, Estuary Watershed Outreach Specialist at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and swing dancer and teacher at Uptown Swing, talks about her work studying streams and how this work helps connect the dots across many facets of where we live as she learned when studying the Tannery Brook in Kingston, NY. Next week we hear interviews with New Paltz High Schoolers Jordan and Emma about their involvement with Girl's Inc. and their experience making their own podcasts on Toxic Masculinity and Conditioning Sexism as well as Allison Lieber who licenses music for bands. Until then, uplift yourself and love one another. When you are swing dance beginners, swing dance social party is kind of scaring you. You might judge yourself that your dancing skill is not good enough. You think everyone is having fun at the party and you are standing at the corner doing nothing. You are afraid of what other people think of you. You just cannot enjoy the social party. This topic we talk about in this podcast is what important mindsets you need before going to swing dance social party. We also invite one of my Dutch friend - Math, who shares his experience. If you have difficulties attending the social, this podcast is especially for you.
Drugs don't seem to play a big role in the swing dance community but they are there - though it's mostly just cannabis and other soft drugs. In this episode, we hear from two anonymous dancers that admit to taking drugs while dancing, and learn a little history with Peter Loggins. *** Produced and presented by Alexei Korolyov www.alexei-korolyov.com From the Top theme song by Alexander Forstner, Nina Jukić and Alexei Korolyov
Swing dancing may seem like a carefree world that is "open to all" but even some perfectly fit and healthy people can have a hard time entering it, to say nothing of people with disabilities. In this episode, we meet two disabled dancers who beat the odds to have a healthy and fulfilling dancing life, and hear from one of the most successful integrated dance troupes in the world. *** Contributors to this episode: Johannes Priebsch, dancer, software engineer and mediator based in Vienna www.priebsch.at Dominic Eagleton, London-based dancer and senior campaigner at Global Witness Stine Nilsen, artistic co-director at Candoco Dance Company www.candoco.co.uk *** Produced and presented by Alexei Korolyov www.alexei-korolyov.com From the Top theme song by Alexander Forstner, Nina Jukić and Alexei Korolyov
Swing dancing seems far removed from the daily grind of business life but in fact it's just as much about money and value as any other human activity. It's just that its financial system is extremely opaque. There are no clear, universally agreed upon prices or tariffs and often no legal oversight either; it's effectively a black market economy. In this episode, we ask how you survive in this remarkably unregulated and non-transparent economy, who sets the prices and who pays for everything, what goes into running a successful swing dance business and how to fight off unscrupulous competition. *** Contributors to this episode: Jerry Almonte, dancer, photographer, organiser and blogger based in Washington D.C. www.jsalmonteproductions.com Mandi Gould, Canadian swing dance entrepreneur and organiser www.mandigould.com Jana Grulichová, co-founder of the Swing Maniacs school in Spain www.swingmaniacs.com *** Produced and presented by Alexei Korolyov www.alexei-korolyov.com From the Top theme song by Alexander Forstner, Nina Jukić and Alexei Korolyov
It’s like The Duo took a time machine back to the 90s. Keith and Greg talk about the trend of white guys in bands with dreadlocks, break-up songs, and Greg finds out what Party of Five was really about. Plus, automotive anti-theft devices.

Swing dance isn't usually classified as art. This title is normally applied to ballet, tango, folk dance or contemporary dance. But is this fair? And does swing dance need to be on a par with these well-established and recognised dance genres? Is swing dance perhaps just a form of entertainment - or even a niche specialism? This and more in an episode packed with insight both from within and outside the swing community. *** Contributors to this episode: Marina Losin, dancer, choreographer and researcher at ImPulsTanz, one of the largest contemporary dance festivals in the world www.impulstanz.com Gaby Cook, noted U.S. jazz dance performer and instructor www.gabycook.com Anaïs Sékiné, swing dance performer and instructor based in Montreal; PhD researcher of modern swing dance culture Peter Loggins, one of the pioneers of the swing dance revival, veteran performer and instructor www.jassdancer.blogspot.com Camille A. In this our summer-minded episode, we look at something that binds us all together: travel. Man's deep-rooted desire to travel and explore, coupled with the increasing globalisation of the swing dance market, has produced a generation of dancers, DJs and musicians that is almost constantly on the go. Modern swing dancing has been deeply influenced by the rapid dissemination of video content and the corresponding revolution in video recording technology: videos have become much easier to get and create, and that has turned them into a powerful learning tool, especially in remote communities. On the other hand, the march of technology has resulted in oversaturation: every major event now spews forth dozens of videos; all competitions are thoroughly documented, all participants logged: it's getting increasingly difficult to choose what and who to watch. Questions are also being asked about whether video uniformity is killing individual styles. We get down to the real nitty-gritty. *** Contributors to this episode: Jeannie Elliott, hardened swing dancer&instructor and leader of Cape Town Swing www.capetownswing.co.za Alain Wong, key swing dance videographer, organiser of Montreal Swing Riot www.youtube.com/user/alainkinwong www.montrealswingriot.com Alina Sokulska, jazz dancer based in Kiev and St. Petersburg, IG HOP's Dancer in Residence#5 www.facebook.com/jazzworkshopsalina Jerry Almonte, veteran swing dancer and author of popular blog Wandering&Pondering www.facebook.com/JSAlmonteWandering For more, please visit www.fromthetoppodcast.com/episodes/10 *** Produced and presented by Alexei Korolyov www.alexei-korolyov.com From the Top theme song by Alexander Forstner, Nina Jukić and Alexei Korolyov Cover photo courtesy of the Dutch Nationaal Archief
There's a Swing Dance coming up this Friday, Feb 26th at 7pm at the Bainbridge High School Commons. And it's a fun way to provide a fundraising benefit for the BHS band program. In this podcast, BHS Radio Club member Finn Mander interviews Chris Thomas who is the Director of Bands at BHS. As further described in this BCB podcast, there will be refreshments, two live jazz band performances (composed entirely of BHS students), and dance lessons provided by a professional, namely, popular local dance instructor Sheila Phillips. Imagine going back to the 1920s to the “roaring twenties” and the “Swing Era.” They were jazz eras like no others. The Bainbridge High School band program is hosting this swing dance evening featuring music from those eras. Swing dancing is a popular dance form that developed along with the jazz musical style of the same name between the 1920s and 1940s. The swing style is based on the focus of the off-beat, meaning that if there were four beats (1,2,3,4), it would focus on every second beat (1, TWO, 3, FOUR) rather than the first and third (ONE, 2, THREE, 4). Instrumentally, the band is based on a strong low section including low brass such as Trombones, and rhythm sections such as Drums, Piano, and Auxiliary, and a featured melodic group made up of reed instruments such as Saxophones and Clarinets and high brass instruments such as Trumpets. Soloists almost always perform during these musical pieces and when they do, it is often improvised meaning that they are coming up with their solo as they are playing it, rather than reading off of music. Swing music and big band music are incredibly fun to dance to, and if you're not into dancing, it's also fun to sit and listen to. Tickets are available for $12.00 online at the BHS Band website, or at the door for $15.00. Students with ASB cards can purchase tickets for $8.00 online, or at the door for $10.00. The Lindy Hop does not necessarily involve dressing up, retro or otherwise - indeed, when a group of Swedish pioneers revived swing dancing in the 1980s, they did it in true 1980s style. Even so, more and more swing dancers begin to fashion up their look. We explore why. *** Contributors to this episode: Voon Chew, New York-based ambi-dancer/DJ and vintage dress enthusiast and collector Dr. Elisabeth Frottier, head of the costume and fashion collection of Vienna’s University of Applied Arts www.dieangewandte.at Yana Sanamyants, Moscow-based swing dancer with a background in textile design Laura Windley, frontwoman of the North Carolina-based Mint Julep Jazz Band, main contributor to Lindy Shopper, the popular blog about swing dance clothing www.laurawindley.com Rani-Patricia Dirnhofer, founder and owner of shoemaking company Saint Savoy www.saintsavoy.com For additional materials and some suggested reading, please visit www.fromthetoppodcast.com/episodes/6 *** Produced and presented by Alexei Korolyov www.alexei-korolyov.com From the Top theme song by Alexander Forstner, Nina Jukić and Alexei Korolyov
