After 15+ years on the road, Seattle's Minus the Bear said goodbye in 2018... but not for long. Marking two decades since the release of their second album, Menos El Oso -- heralded by both critics and fans alike -- the five-piece are back this year to play the album in full across the country. A sprawling, math-rock masterclass, Menos takes listeners on a globetrotting trail through Spain, Ireland, Los Angeles and more, while vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider inhabits characters seeking escape, be it from fever dreams, crime scenes or soul-crushing day jobs. Today, Jake is joined by guitarist David Knudson, as the pair breakdown Menos track-by-track. Along with host Jim Hanke, they dive into the meanings behind some of the band's most impactful songs twenty years later, and how the genre-bending experimentation of Danger Mouse and DJ Shadow influenced the LP. Catch Minus the Bear at this year's Best Friends Forever Fest in Las Vegas, or on tour cost-to-coast, this fall. Visit minusthebear.com for tickets, social media and more.

On this week's show, we spin a bumper crop of new music, bid adieu to some folks we're going to miss the crap out of, and try to muster up the courage to face the next four years with strength, grace and dignity. En herhaal; "I Am, Sofa King. One of the world's best known and bestselling authors Jodi Picoult is no stranger to controversy, some of her books have been banned in the US, and her latest novel might just ruffle a few ruffs here too as she looks to bust the myths we hold about the truth behind who wrote Shakespeare's plays. The actor and DJ Kristian Nairn, perhaps best known as the gentle giant Hodor in Game of Thrones, has written a memoir sharing stories about his life coming of age as a gay man during The troubles in Northern Ireland and finding his confidence as a drag queen called Revvlon. And Sam Evans and Shauna Guinn reveal what happened when they quit their 9-5 jobs, went on a pilgrimage around the Southern US states, and learned the dark art of American BBQ. All that, plus we have the Inheritance Tracks of actor, author and the voice of Danger Mouse and Hey Dugge - Alexander Armstrong.Presenters: Nikki Bedi and Jon Kay Producer: Ben Mitchell

Let us know what you think of the latest episode of Distinct Nostalgia by clicking here and sending us a messageWe're sad to hear the news that Brian Trueman has died at the aged of 92. Brian provided the soundtrack to so many characters of our childhoods, whether as a writer or actor. His work with Cosgrove Hall Films included Chorlton and the Wheelies, Dangermouse, Cockleshell Bay and Jamie and the Magic Torch. But he had a career before helping to bring to life these animation classics - in acting, in journalism too. Here in an interview recorded in 2016, we hear Brian being interviewed for a special radio doc by Made in Manchester (Distinct Nostalgia's producers) which was never aired. We've only found half of it and will put the second part as soon as we find it. In the meantime enjoy over an hour with one of the real greats of Television. Distinct Nostalgia presenter Ashley Byrne says: 'Brian memorably once said to me in a Granada TV programme we made 'you should never patronise kids. Treat them like little adults and throw the smarties high.' That comes over in all of his animation work. RIP Brian. You were a genuine legend for millions of us. Researched by Andrew Edwards. Produced by Ashley Byrne. A Made in Manchester Production And don't forget we need your support. Distinct Nostalgia has no budget. He's courageous! He's amazing! He's... a mouse in a London pillar box. Danger Mouse protects the world from the criminal activities of Baron Silas Greenback and various other would-be world beaters alongside the hapless helper Penfold, all with the stiff upper lip we associate with our friends from across the pond. Running for over a decade in its native country and doing good business in the States for Nickelodeon, the secret agent gave many 80s kids in America their first real taste of British comedy.

In which The Curmudgeons celebrate the music and indelible legacy of one of the 21st Century's smartest, most vital rock bands. When The Black Keys first hit in 2002, comparisons with The White Stripes were inevitable. After all, they were a duo that blasted forth with just a guitar and drums. But that's where the fair comparisons ended. The Black Keys offered up lean, mean, reverent blues rock with dashes of soul and psychedelia. After self-recording their first four albums--and mostly doing so in basements--the band graduated to the majors with the help of storied hip-hop producer Danger Mouse, instantly growing as an incredibly sensual musical force. We explore the band's entire catalog, including their brand-new record, Ohio Players. Barnaby Clay joins host Jessica Kantor this week on Raising Cinephiles. Barnaby shares his introduction to horror films and how that's shaped his filmmaking. Barnaby discusses his new film, The Seeding, and how a TV show from his early childhood unconsciously inspired ideas in the film. The Seeding will be in select theaters and on digital January 26th. And finally, they discuss the challenge of introducing our children to cinema with all the competing content. About Barnaby Clay: Prior to The Seeding, Barnaby directed the documentary SHOT! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock which chronicles the story of legendary rock photographer Mick Rock. His award-winning short films include Carousel, starring Chloe Sevigny, and Sickdog, starring Tunde Adebimpe and Natasha Lyonne. While his new movie has its feet firmly planted in the horror/thriller genre, Barnaby's background is rooted in the music and art space, having directed numerous music videos for bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV On The Radio and creating unique art installations like Live On MarsRevisited, a reimagining of the Mick Rock directed video for David Bowie's "Life On Mars". He also regularly collaborates with Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O (who he's also married to), including the immersive installation An Encounter With Lux Prima, which was done in collaboration with Danger Mouse. The project's sound has drawn such comparisons as "Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana," "Avril Lavigne and Foo Fighters in a blender," and "Kathleen Hanna fronting Modest Mouse."
In conversation with Airea D. Matthews The winner of three Grammy Awards and three NAACP Image Awards, Tariq Trotter, aka Black Thought, is the MC and co-founder of The Roots. The Philly-based hip-hop group has produced 11 albums and is the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Trotter's solo work includes three volumes of Streams of Thought, collaborative albums with Danger Mouse and El Michels Affair, and guest appearances on dozens of other artists' tracks. He also co-wrote, co-composed, and starred in the off-Broadway play Black No More; acted in other such varied projects as The Deuce; Tick, Tick . . . Boom!; and Brooklyn Babylon; and, with Roots partner Questlove, founded the production company Two One Five Entertainment. ''Refined literary fire from the soulful furnace of pain and suffering'' (The New York Times), The Upcycled Self tells the story of Trotter's difficult early life, his redemptive steps toward success and happiness, and the lessons he gleaned that readers can use to move forward on their own paths. Airea D. Matthews is the 2022–23 Philadelphia Poet Laureate and directs the poetry program at Bryn Mawr College. Her collection Simulacra won the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize and her work has appeared in The New York Times, Best American Poets, Gulf Coast, Harvard Review, and VQR, among other journals. Matthews' other honors include a 2022 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship, a 2020 Pew Fellowship, and the 2016 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award. Her latest work, Bread and Circus, addresses themes of income inequality, commodification, and conventional economic theories through poetry, prose, and imagery. Unlock your confidence and always use the right tools for the job with MANSCAPED™.Kev Brown's Website - https://officialkevbrown.com/Hailing from Landover, MD, Kevin Brown, aka Kev Brown, got his first exposure to hip-hop when he heard his brother's copy of the 1986 Run-D.M.C. album Raising Hell, though he didn't begin to heavily immerse himself in the genre until he was in high school in the early '90s. Soon he began writing his own rhymes, but quickly found that his true talents lay in production. In 2001 famed beat-maker Pete Rock played a track Brown did with rapper Grap Luva, "What Ruling Means," for Marley Marl, who was so impressed with what he heard that he included the song on his album Re-Entry, which came out that same year. That led to work with De La Soul and DJ Jazzy Jeff, but it wasn't until 2004, when The Brown Album, his remixed version of Jay-Z's The Black Album (which came before Danger Mouse's The Grey Album), hit the streets that Brown started to receive real attention. After a succession of collaborations and singles, Kev released his solo debut, I Do What I Do, in 2005. The album, which was released on Up Above Records, had the producer rapping at least one verse on each of the 13 songs, as well as featuring guest MCs from his crew, the D.C.-area-based Low Budget, and Phonte Coleman from Little Brother.
Revered producer and musician Danger Mouse has joined forces with renowned New York rapper Jemini to dust off off Born Again, an album recorded back in 2004 that was tucked away in a vault hasn't seen the light of day since. After dropping their lauded debut Ghetto Pop Life in 2003, the duo quickly began laboring over its follow-up, but the recording was shelved indefinitely — til now. We are partial to the fun-loving bounce on “Brooklyn Basquiat.”

Yes, yes, I know it was only two episodes ago that I went on about being intentional about the cadence of decision-making. And I stand by it! Mostly. You see, being intentional isn't the same as choosing a path and stubbornly sticking to it. Best laid plans blah blah. But here's the thing: unexpected stuff happens! Yes you have laws and regulations and policies to follow (more on that later in the season) but those really only affect a little bit of the work of good governance. Here's a trivial example: Your hip-hop technology company has 15 minutes allocated on the agenda for a discussion of the best albums of 2022. The board mostly agrees that Cheat Codes by Black Thought and Danger Mouse is a great album and deserves to be in the top 5 – maybe even #1. But a debate about whether Danger Mouse's production style is brilliant, moody and lush or vaguely monotonous and bland leads to an idea for a potential new beatmaking interface – something earth shattering. And then the board chair interrupts, saying “OK time's up! Let's review this quarter's strategic milestones.” It's true that we agreed to a 15 minute discussion, and that we have lots of other work to do, and that the board's oversight of strategy is an important part of their job. But let's be real: who could fault you for just kinda saying “forget the agenda!” and diving into an idea that might revolutionize your company? Not the regulators. Not your General Counsel. Not anyone.
