It’s another week, which means another conversation with a cool somebody, caring enough about humanity to lend themselves to help make it better. This week we talk about making workplaces safe and more welcoming for all people, and specifically how getting more women into leadership positions can accomplish just that. For this episode I had the absolute joy of speaking with Stephanie Holt, who worked for more than 30 years in both the us and internationally. For more than half of that time, she held executive leadership positions in both public and private sector technology companies. Her name is Stephanie Holt. And her experience runs the gamut from multinational corporate settings to start up environments. And what I find so fascinating about Stephanie is that her focus has been on the intersection of business outcomes and creating places where people love to work. Currently Stephanie works to both transform more women into visionary leaders and make the workplace safe and welcoming for all. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience navigating rooms full of powerful folks.Listen in as Stephanie shares her plan of for leveraging that experience to help create a more diverse and inclusive lot in leadership for STEM and beyond.Key Talking Points of the Episode:Meet StephanieBeing an authentic voice on LinkedInStephanie’s experience with in STEMMindsetPitfalls for people who care, according to StephanieStephanie’s influencesStephanie’s advice to people who care a lotBeing who you are and running with your strengthsKey Milestones of the Episode:[03:27] Meet Stephanie Holt: leadership background in Technology[04:20] Getting more women in leadership roles[06:55] The role of men in an inclusive workplace[8:30] An authentic voice on LinkedIn[12:59] The Year of Stephanie[14:40] “Put it on Facebook”[17:00] Learning on LinkedIn[18:3] Pronouns[24:22] More women in STEM and the workplace, in general[26:05] It’s not one size fits all[28:04] Complimentary and team-building skills[31:30] Coaching and mentoring[35:18] A mindset of gratitude[36:32] Thinking about your legacy[39:20] Women in executive leadership is like a game of musical chairs[40:40] Telling relatable stories[42:58] Transferable skills: Experience doesn’t just come from the work you get paid for[48:26] People who have influenced Stephanie[50:31] Stephanie’s advice[56:17] Standing for STEM organization: virtual internshipsStandout Quotes from the Episode:“There are so many industries that are facing the same issues and I don't think they're really that hard to overcome. Growing onions is something I've never done. But if you have ever stood in the produce aisle looking at the various bays of onions and wondered which ones you should buy, I feel your pain. Shay Myers and his family have been growing onions & enjoying them for decades. Their farm -- Owyhee Produce -- packs and ships onions to all 50 states from his home base in Idaho. And with that depth of experience, he knows a lot about buying and enjoying onions. We talk through that purchase decision in the grocery, the differences in sweetness and pungency, how onions get rated through a measure called pyruvics, tips for storing onions at home and the way the lifecycle of onions from harvest & storage was really impacted by the stay at home orders. Today I’m talking about why I don't stress about homeschooling and how I do that. There are some very practical tips and some thoughts that I have that help me not totally freak out. Key Points from this Episode: There are going to be interruptions, so plan for them! Make food accessible to all your kids that they can reach and take care of those needs on their own. Keep carrots on the bottom shelf in the fridge. Make triple batches of muffins and keep them in the freezer. Have special toys like play dough or animals from the dollar store that get pulled out for younger kids during the school hours so they can be happy while you work with the older kids. If you're using manipulatives with older kids, have enough for the youngers to play with the same kind. If your older kids are using notebooks, have one for your youngers to color in and use during the same time. This lets them feel included in what you are already doing. One of my favorite things about homeschooling is that it allows for the kids to be intentionally involved in the daily household life. I wanted them to have time to help with the dishes, laundry, food prep, etc. We work that into our day and it's part of school for us! It's hard to take the time to teach them the household tasks, but it's an investment in the future for all of us. Make a clipboard (see resources below) with the have-tos for your kids so you aren't the one always dictating what's happening next. Directing to the clipboard makes it one boundary to keep rather than needing to keep boundaries separately for math, and reading, and handwriting, and a chore, etc. Find a system for your papers and notebooks and pencils and pens. I like having one bucket just for notebooking (century and nature in resources below) with the notebooks and writing utensils for that activity that stays out of reach until we are notebooking again. We lock away a lot of our homeschool materials as a training tool to help kids understand that not everything is available all the time. Homeschool is not about school. It's about a lifestyle. Choose curriculum that fits the priorities you have for your kids! (see below for what I use with my kids) Trust that the child is a whole person! They have everything they need to be able to become who they are. Our job is to help cultivate the room to grow. We can't choose the timing. Take a breath and know it'll be okay! I don't feel responsible for creating all these activities that go with homeschooling or all of these amazing experiences. I create space that lets them play out and explore the things that really caught their attention. Trust that time is a great teacher. Trust that space is a great teacher. What do you love? Do more of that. What do you not love? Why? Do less of that. Problem solve! What can I do to make this easier on myself? It's going to be messy and that's okay! Build in some structure so the kids can help with the household stuff so you can have some time for things you want to do too.
Some highlights from this episode are:Why not getting drafted was one of the greatest blessings ever. What he means by influence being a superpower and how to develop that as a superpower. How every result breaks down into 3 components: Process Mastery, Influence Mastery, and Self Mastery. The 3 lessons he's learned from being a dad about failure and success. What he considers to be the biggest failure of his life (and it has nothing to do with business or baseball).Indispensable element number one of making sure relationships are not viewed as transactional relationships: loving people unconditionally with boundaries.Realizing that everything people will do is either an act of love or a cry for help will allow you to love people unconditionally with correct boundaries. His greatest growth area to this day is letting people do their share, which sometimes means letting them "crash" and get hurt. Why we should learn from people who have not only done what you want to do but who can also teach it well.Sean also gave me the opportunity to why I do what I do. He asked me why I started doing this podcast, and I was able to share with him in detail my WHY. Topics Discussed in this Episode:There is too much acceptance and fatalism around institutional politics in higher ed.The cultural history of the white middle class, which benefited from society's largesse, received much for free and thus didn't have the cultural experience of fighting or struggling for what they got. There is a racist aspect to the defunding of government institutions, where support has been removed as demographics have become less white. Submissive individualism is the white middle class's psychological formation. These phenomena have disabled post-1960s university activism. Another reason for the acceptance of institutional politics is the division of faculty into tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty. Faculty have a professional obligation to do some kind of workplace democracy but have abandoned policymaking and the institution is weaker as a result. Service has been feminized, which has split service from institutional politics. There is routinization of administrative work that authorizes defeatism and localism around policy discussions. The white middle class default culture of academia simply does not want to engage in the conflict needed to create change. The student financial aid system is bigoted against new entrants - students of color, first generation students, students from low-income families - because it sets up different financial outcomes and a radicalized caste system between those who do not have to borrow and those who do.Debt-free college for all has to be the primary policy goal and tuition-free public education is the way to get there. Cennydd has earned a reputation as a trusted guide, helping companies navigate complex issues related to design, technology, and ethics. He’s also the author of Future Ethics, a book which outlines key ethical principles and methods for constructing a fairer future. In this episode, Cennydd and I explore the role that ethics plays in design and innovation, and why so many companies today—in Silicon Valley and beyond—are failing to recognize the human element of their technological pursuits. Cennydd offers his unique perspective, along with some practical tips that technologists can use to design with greater mindfulness and consideration for others. In our chat, we covered topics from Cennydd’s book and expertise including: Why there is growing resentment towards the tech industry and the reason all companies and innovators need to pay attention to ethics The importance of framing so that teams look beyond the creation of an “ethical product / solution” and out towards a better society and future The role that diversity plays in ethics and the reason why homogenous teams working in isolation can be dangerous for an organization and society Cennydd’s “front-page test,” “designated dissenter,” and other actionable ethics tips that innovators and data product teams can apply starting today Navigating the gray areas of ethics and how large companies handle them The unfortunate consequences that arise when data product teams are complacent The fallacy that data is neutral—and why there is no such thing as “raw” data Why stakeholders must take part in ethics conversations Resources and Links: Cennydd Bowles Future Ethics (book) Design for Real Life The Trouble with Bias Twitter: @cennydd Quotes from Today’s Episode “There ought to be a clearer relationship between innovation and its social impacts.” — Cennydd “I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think there was a strong upside to technology, or if I didn't think it couldn't advance the species.” — Cennydd “I think as our power has grown, we have failed to use that power responsibly, and so it's absolutely fair that we be held to account for those mistakes.” — Cennydd “I like to assume most creators and data people are trying to do good work. They're not trying to do ethically wrong things. They just lack the experience or tools and methods to design with intent.” — Brian “Ethics is about discussion and it's about decisions; it's not about abstract theory.” — Cennydd “I have seen many times diversity act as an ethical early warning system [where] people who firmly believe the solution they're about to put out into the world is, if not flawless, pretty damn close.” — Cennydd “The ethical questions around the misapplication or the abuse of data are strong and prominent, and actually have achieved maybe even more recognition than other forms of harm that I talk about.” — Cennydd “There aren't a whole lot of ethical issues that are black and white.” — Cennydd “When you never talk to a customer or user, it's really easy to make choices that can screw them at the benefit of increasing some KPI or busi
Today I'm talking about how I taught my kids to play, which leads into why we homeschool. If you feel like you always needs to entertain your kids and are looking for how to build the independent play skills in your children, this episode is for you! Key Points from this Episode: There is no one right way to do anything, schooling included! Even if you don't homeschool, you can take away ideas about how to run your household that can help your home life. Enabling kids to have the space to play out real life things (like kitchen sets) gives them so much imagination and freedom!) Recognizing kids' capabilities to feed themselves, wash themselves and dress themselves requires us to relinquish some control of our control, but opens the door to have the kids be able to be contributing members of our households. Charlotte Mason teaches that children are born persons. They have their own personalities and ambitions. Teach children to be a part of a family and a community. Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: There are a lot of people working on medical devices today. It has been a hot area now but I thought it would be interesting to talk with the CEO of a medical device company that started more than 100 years ago, in 1913. That is a company with four generations of history. The current CEO is Julie Charlestein and the company was founded by her great grandfather. The company is Premier Dental Products. Julie is well-respected in the industry and has served on dental medicine boards for several universities. We discussed a recent product they brought to market — one my dentist likely used on me recently – and how they went from initial idea to a successful launch.

It’s about trying to ensure a certain type of response.” “There are so many people in the church who are not actually free because they’ve settled for this appearance of Christianity instead of the real thing.” “Integrity matters. Character matters. Holiness matters. Being above reproach--it matters. And it matters in the small things and it matters in the big things.” “What stands in the way of people coming to the church or to Jesus is if we are more concerned with the church’s reputation than with people’s freedom and safety.” “People love candy; but what people are craving is a meal.” “Niceness will never ask you to die to yourself.” “Don’t quit.” “Most of the leaders that you see are there because they persevered when no one was paying attention to them.” Episode Sponsor: Confident Conversations If you’d like to learn how to initiate and lead hard conversations as Christian woman–even if you struggle with confrontation, aren’t sure what to say, and want to avoid hurting people in the process–then grab my mini-course, Confident Conversations. Jeff Bland joins JJ today as they discuss the difference between disease care and health care. They discuss what today’s healthcare industry is good at, as well as the challenges that exist. Jeff talks about Big Bold Health and what his message is all about. They will also discuss ways to implement healthy lifestyle choices with the goal of you being in the best possible health for you. Freebies From Today’s Episode Get Jeff’s free downloadable 30-Day Food Plan by going to jjvirgin.com/bigboldhealth. Main Points From Today’s Episode There is a difference between disease care and health care. Disease care is best for injury and trauma. Health care is hugely personal. A health plan must be customized to each individual. Health is much more than the absence of disease. It’s about living in a way that allows you to do the things you want. Episode Play-By-Play [4:50] How Dr. Jeff Bland transitioned from being a professor of biochemistry to being the Father of Functional Medicine [8:35] What is Big Bold Health? [10:40] What is the difference between disease care and health care? [11:27] The term “prevention” is a ripoff, it’s hard to quantify it without actually getting sick or diseased or injured. [12:30] People need something concrete that they can feel and sense. [13:20] It’s hard to birth a health care system out of this type of system. [14:00] We need to really define this term, so we can objectify it as minutely as we do the term disease. [15:30] Health is much more than the absence of disease. It’s about living in a way that allows you to do these things. [16:50] Four aspects of function [18:30] Health is for the individual. It’s personal to each person. So, to improve health for each person, we need to remove this factor. [24:00] Disease care has its appropriate place, for things like injury or disease. Health care needs to be given as much focus for these types of issues for things we can self-correct. [24:55] What you can measure and monitor, you can improve. [25:35] When the human genome was defined, a lot of pharma people felt disillusioned by this. [26:11] The way our genes express themselves in our lives is hugely variable, based on this factor. Or they may drink more alcohol than they used to, to numb them of what they're feeling. 03:14 – Common mistakes people make when trying to solve that problem: They don't realize how bad everything has got. And they don't seek help. 04:09 – Robyn's Valuable Free Action(VFA): Just to stop where you are right at this moment. Take two or three deep breaths. Close your eyes if you can, if you're not driving. And feel into what are you feeling physically and emotionally. And until you know what you're feeling right now, you actually can't make improvements or change anything. That's like driving a car, you can't get somewhere if you don't know where. 05:06 – Robyn's Valuable Free Resource(VFR): Five Steps to Take Back Your Power and Find Direction in Life 06:03 – Q:"why do I choose to change career and go into life coaching after I've had a very successful career as a physiotherapist?" A: It’s sort of twofold really like one I realized I was getting a lot of people who were coming for physical problems but they had all this baggage, they had all this stuff going on that was creating the stress on them. And therefore, they weren't healing quite as quickly as they could. And people don't realize how powerful that is in their lives. And then also my own journey when I got really depressed at one point and all the help, I got from energy healers and coaches and so on really made me keen. And I just felt that purpose in me was now shifting from helping physical things to more emotional, mental, and psychological, spiritual sort of aspects of people's lives. In this episode, I talk about where to start when you feel overwhelmed with getting your physical health where you want it to be. We all go through times where we have to have our physical bodies take a backseat and this is my process that I go through every time I re-start my exercise routine. Key Points from this Episode: There are so many reasons (physical & mental) that take us back to square one with our fitness. That's OK! My big why for exercise is the endorphins. I feel better when I exercise. You don't need to do the whole workout that is designed! Start with 10 minutes, then go to 15 minutes until you find the right duration for you. Start with gently building strength (Physique 57), then add cardio (Marcy Upright Exercise Bike). I replaced my standard transportation with a cardio bucket bike. Find what you love to do to work moving into your day. Mow the lawn, swim, longboard, dance in the kitchen. Do what works for you! I gain energy from exercising, not lose it. It feels good to feel strong! Focusing on getting my green smoothie in every day helps teach my body to crave fruits and vegetables again. It helps me get out of the survival-eating mode. Whatever your body needs, feed it that!

I’m guessing you have a toxic person (or two!) in your life. How can you recognize toxic people? Why is it so hard to recognize that toxicity? And what does recovery look like? Co-host Lauren Trantham and I dig into what a toxic relationship looks like, why they can be so hard to pinpoint, and how you can recover from that type of abusive relationship. We want you to know that if you’re in an abusive relationship, please seek help because you have the freedom to make choices and get out. Recognizing Toxic People For me, I have one of two reactions to toxic people: (1) they either make my skin crawl immediately OR (2) I understand they’re toxic but believe I can help “fix” them. One way to recognize toxic people is to ask, “How does this person make me feel?” In my life, I don’t want to upset the toxic person so I stuff down my own feelings and don’t take care of myself, all in the name of selflessness. Even when you recognize toxic people, you sometimes can’t separate from them, e.g. a family member. Toxic relationships are complicated. Emotional and verbal abuse comes out like a dripping faucet, but the next thing you know, you have a flood. Humans can adapt to almost anything so we adapt to abuse too. Abuse happens slowly. Two more keys to recognizing toxic people are asking, “Can I identify the drips?” and “Am I able to do something about it?” You can only control your own reactions. Recovering from Toxic People Lauren shares these best practices as she’s recovering from her toxic relationship: Be really clear about how you feel. Take moments to discover how you feel. Analyze if there’s any legitimacy to how you feel. Be really clear on who you are. Surround yourself with those who know and love you. Conclusion: Remember that abuse can be really hard to recognize because it’s made up of little manipulations. Also, know that you can recover. You are free to do what you need to do to get help. Archetypes are psychological patterns that people use as filters to interact with the world. As a Femmefluencer, knowing the Archetype you use most naturally allows to you most easily enroll others into your vision. In this episode of Femmefluence, we dive deep into Archetypes, what they are and how to learn yours. Key Points from this Episode There are a ton of ways to assess your personality Humans LOVE learning more about what they’re about it. From horoscopes to assessments for work like DISC and Strengthfinders, to personal assessments like Enneagram and Myers-Brigg, there are a lot of ways to be curious about what makes you and others tick. For 21 years I’ve been obsessed with why humans do things - it’s ultimately why I became a brand futurist - I support brands to create strategies that help them understand why people consume and buy things - especially products and services. If you’re a woman leader who wants to create more affluence and influence, you want to have these tools in your pocket too. The best way I’ve discovered to do that is an assessment I’ve created (more on that later) It all started when I was in 2nd grade. I went to a small Catholic school where all the other little girls wanted to become teachers and nurses but not me - I wanted to become the General Counsel for Coca-Cola International I didn’t end up becoming a lawyer I have navigated and advised for some of the other great brands of the world When I was 22 and fresh out of college, I pursued a career in marketing and high-tech. Here I worked as a junior copywriter (read: coffee runner) for the largest ad agency in the world. One day as I brought coffee, I listened as the account executives talked about how to better position Coca-Cola’s archetypes to beat Pepsi in sales. From that moment I fell in love with archetypes
How can you discover your femininity? Is it possible to embrace your aging self? And why are sexuality and femininity so closely tied together? I chat with MILF podcast host and author Jennifer Tracy dive deep as we talk about femininity, sensuality, and sexuality as women in our 40s. Jennifer shares her personal story about how she discovered her femininity and what pole dancing as to do with all of it! How Pole Dancing Changed Jennifer’s Life Initially, Jennifer took a pole dancing class as a fundraiser hosted by a friend. She’d done burlesque and belly dancing before so she was comfortable in her skin and didn’t think the class would be that big of a deal. However, she walked into a dark room with no mirrors and she felt very awkward in her body during the class. But it was through this class that she started to wake up to her own sexuality and sensuality. Pole dancing is not about form or choreography, but all about organic movement and feeling alive. Before she started pole dancing, she felt frumpy and wore baggy clothes. Now she’s told she’s sexy just by how she carries herself. Jennifer’s Journey in Discovering her Femininity Jennifer’s femininity-journey changed everything in her life in three major ways: As she rediscovered her femininity, she realized that her marriage wasn’t working. She and her husband went to counseling, but eventually got a divorce. Jennifer changed the kind of woman she was around. She was now drawn to people who were confident, empowered, and didn’t want her to dim her light. Her creative juices were flowing so she wrote a novel. Aging + Sexuality As a 40-year-old woman, I often don’t see myself in ads. I feel forgotten and overlooked. Jennifer also said that she tries not to judge her wrinkles and skin tone. When my doctor suggested that my ovaries be removed, I cried. Here’s what Jennifer said: “There is a grieving that goes along with all of these stages that is natural and needs to be honored.” Our culture doesn’t give us space to grieve. Jennifer also realized that as she gets older, she needs more rest. She reminds us that our bodies will tell us what we need. Why Do Sensuality and Femininity Live so Closely Together? Jennifer says that in ancient Egypt and Greece, sensuality came with empowerment. Beautiful women were adorned in beautiful clothes. Through the ages, there’s a great deal of power in beauty and sensuality. Beauty, love, sex, and lust are very powerful. If you think about someone that just happens to stumble on your book that’s on Amazon. What are they going to see first? The first thing they are going to notice will probably be the cover. Their eyes are going to be drawn to it, so you’ve got to have a great cover. The next thing they are going to look at is the title, or the main title. They are going to read that and think, “Is it good? Is it interesting?” The next thing might be the subtitle, but the second or third thing that they are going to look at is that little star and that little number, or maybe the big number that’s next to that star, that tells a person what’s going on with the book. They are going to look to see, “Does this book have 5,000 reviews?” Then, they are going to know that this is an offer that has been around a long time, or this is a celebrity… There’s a lot of, uh, promotion going on with this. Or, maybe they're going to see a couple of hundred and think, “Wow. This book is legit. Dr. Warren has over fifteen years of combined research, clinical practice and teaching experience in women’s gynecological and obstetric health. She conducts research in low, middle and high incomes settings with frontline maternal health care workers aimed at improving the quality of care and promoting the Universal Rights of Childbearing Women. Approximately 20% of the world’s population carries the Highly Sensitive personality trait. That’s basically 1 in 5 people you’ll encounter on a given day. You might be highly sensitive yourself. But there’s quite a bit of stigma that comes along with the word “sensitive” and the term “Highly Sensitive Person” (HSP) is often misunderstood. Given that most therapists and healers are also HSPs and about 50% of their clientele are as well, it’s imperative that we demystify the gifts and challenges that Highly Sensitive People experience internally and put forth into the world. As an HSP myself, I’m thrilled to be talking with April Snow, AMFT, a therapist who focuses on HSPs in her practice and runs an incredible online community for highly sensitive therapists. The topic of high sensitivity is so big that it’s a real challenge to say it all in the span of a single episode. But, April and I really touch on a lot, from defining what the HSP trait really is and the gifts and challenges that come with it, the importance of processing time and radical self-acceptance, the challenges of parenting HSP children, to the differences between introverted and extroverted HSPs as well as the differences between extroverted HSPs and non-HSP extroverts. We also dip a toe into the importance of letting the joy in and what that means to an HSP, the isolation and loneliness HSPs are prone to, and the hero/heroine’s journey that all HSPs need to step fully into themselves. And, we discuss how embracing your highly sensitive nature completely alters the way you work and market yourself, allowing effort, hustle and selling yourself to fall away as your YOU-ness surfaces and resonates effortlessly. I want to delve deeper into the topic of HSPs, but I would love to hear your questions about life and work as a HSP, and working with other HSPs. You can submit your questions here: practiceofbeingseen.com/the-highly-sensitive-series-query Quoted in the Episode: There’s this misperception that sensitivity is weakness. But, actually, there’s a lot of strength there. Doesn’t it take bravery and strength to feel all those emotions? And to feel them so deeply, to go to those places within yourself? That’s brave. - April Snow You see a lot of highly sensitive therapists questioning their ability to do the work long-term, which breaks my heart because it can be overwhelming without taking into account your temperament, carving time in for yourself during the day and making sure you get a good lunch, not overscheduling yourself and getting the right supports where they need to be. Those are all really important so that you can allow these gifts to come forward. - April Snow I’m starting to see a pattern in these conversations where we get to a point where we identify yet another form of othering. Another way that we’re separate or we’re different. And then there’s this quest, this desire to belong and to reintegrate things, but integrate them from a place of holding ourselves in our differences and not dimming the light on those things. Those things are what make us who we are. - Rebecca Wong What could we unlearn that is actually causing us to feel these things that are detrimental to our being? - Rebecca Wong Resources Referenced in this Episode: April’s Facebook group for Highly Sensitive Therapists Pioneer researcher of HSP personality trait, Elaine Aron, PhD. In this Episode: There are moments of realization we all experience when we see the truth. The ego or belief system we identify as who we are does not like to hear this. We all, due to our imagined-Self, (self–image) never like to hear that something is wrong with us, or that we are not the truth. Since the imagined-Self is just that, imagined, there is a constant state of denial of this fact. There is what is being imagined, and then there is the Self. We can do better than believe we are something, (an imaginary character with a set of beliefs). Stop pretending to be something you are not. How is sustainability better than CSR? Difference between CSR and Sustainability The difference between CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Sustainability lies in the vision, purpose and power for change behind each term. The problem with the term CSR is that in some countries it is used for philanthropy-cause related marketing, PR or for initiatives divorced from the core business objectives. CSR has also been used by companies as a tool to do good by supporting or investing in different causes that would create a good reputation. There is good CSR too and there are companies that have used CSR for transformative purpose. The concept of sustainability offers us a more holistic and ambitious management approach regarding the economic, environmental and social aspects and principles that have to become part of the way a company does business. Role of HR in Building a Sustainable Company Working with Romanian companies on sustainability for the last 9 years, Ioana has noticed that sustainability is rarely integrated into HR operations. The HR departments are not involved in the planning of initiatives or strategies related to sustainability. It is a topic at international level, how HR can support the planning and implementation of sustainability, but it is not the same scenario in Romania. The connection between HR and sustainability has been overlooked. If a company is trying to make sustainability a part of core business, they cannot overlook human resources. Sustainability is a process of change in which a company’s strategies, activities, systems and organisational culture are re-shaped. HR is an agent of change that can help create the systems that are necessary for advancing sustainability in the company. It is important that the HR department and the HR managers understand that they have a key-role in integrating sustainability into core HR operations. For example by: recruiting people that have the right skills making sustainability part of the performance appraisals and incentive schemes finding out what motivates employees to work on sustainability creating employee engagement programs making sustainability part of training and leadership programs The change should start from the top management of an organisation. Impact on Daily Life Ioana recycles, saves energy and buys as much as possible local products. She buys ecological products for cleaning. She avoids plastic by using water filter and her own shopping bag when doing the groceries. Nature Memory Ioana’s favourite nature memory is of time spent at her grandparents’ house, in a mountain region, during her childhood. The forest was just a few metres from the doorstep. Ioana spent a lot of time in the forest, walking, picking forest fruit, mushrooms and herbal plants of the seasons. She would collect resin from the bark of trees, imagining that it was a precious resource she could sell. The forest was like a playground and nature was an important part of her childhood. It was one of the reasons that she was a very happy child. In later years, the experience of seeing her favourite childhood forest getting changed due to human activity, like uncontrolled logging, woke up the environmentalist in Ioana. It made her learn more about environment protection and sustainability in general. Her connection with nature in childhood influenced the choices she made in her adult life. Takeaway from this Episode There is no shortcut or easy way to build up a sustainable company or organisation. It is a challenging process, and requires change and having the right people on board. However, once started, the benefits will come. The satisfaction of creating a business for the future, a business that takes care of our planet and it’s people are other benefits of a sustainable business. Ioana most admires People who show leadership and get out of their comfort zone for a greater purpose. Ray Anderson, Founder of Interface - for transforming the business, and making Interface one of the most sustainable companies. Oprah Winfrey - for using her fame to educate people on spirituality and well-being. Leonardo Di Caprio - for endorsing the cause of climate change by launching his documentary about climate change. Favourite Resources Advancing Sustainability: HR's Role - Society for Human Resource Management Talent, Transformation, and the Triple Bottom Line: How Companies Can Leverage Human Resources to Achieve Sustainable Growth by Andrew W. Savitz and Karl Weber Global Reporting Initiative Invisible Nature People mentioned in the interview: Joe Confino, Executive editor of the Huffington Post and former Editor and Director of Guardian Sustainable business – mentioned because of his comment in a sustainability conference in Romania – He said, we should learn from the experience of the more developed countries, such as the UK, that along the years went from corporate social responsibility to corporate responsibility and then finally to sustainability. Other countries can skip the steps and focus directly on sustainability David Watt, Executive Director of the Institute of Directors - mentioned for his comment on how directors have a legal obligation to keep a company going, and sustainability is the way to move forward with that. Is social media all it's cracked up to be? It is still working for some and yet, not for others. I speak with one farmer in this podcast episode who is gaining some attention through his efforts in Social Media. I have found that in particular I have been unhappy with Facebook as a platform. You have to pay to get people to like your page, then, if you have a post that is popular or you want people to see you have to pay to reach all of your "fans". These are people who have liked you page and would like to see your update show up on their home page. In the end I'm calling shenanigans on the lot of it. Yes, it is still useful, but I have a feeling that we're in for a big shit in how people are using the internet. For me, that shift is going back to a time before Social Media. I am narrowing my scope and my efforts this year not to try and capture everyone on every platform, but to deliver a lot of value on the platforms that I remain active on. Right click here to download the MP3 In this farm podcast you will learn: My opinion on the current state of Social Media What hashtags are How to find them How to use them to get discovered What Instagram take-overs are and how they are good for all involved The benefits a smartphone can bring to the farm Interview with Colby Layton of Sandia Pastured Meats Howdy! I am Colby. On the 14th of May, I took over as the full time Farm Manager and the President of the business. It was outside of the middle of nowhere on a warm day in the midst of the watermelon ripening season when I was born to a cotton farming family. Later we then moved to the city where I attended high school learning that people talk back to the teachers and other enlightening aspects of the city. Before senior year, I enlisted as a medic in the Army and attended basic training with the medic training occurring between high school and college. Coming from the farm and being in the military influenced my collegiate school choice. From Texas A&M I gathered a baccalaureate degree in Animal Science, an Army commission in the Medical Services Corps branch, and a wife whom you will meet below. After Texas A&M, Kelly and I moved to the employ of Sandia Agricultural Enterprises, Inc. SAEI was a dairy milking purebred Jersey cattle. This land and family was a part of the former "World's Largest Jersey Dairy, the Knolle farms. From this chapter in our lives, we determined that we would need to have a career change in order for us to obtain our own piece of the pastoral lifestyle. In order to achieve this lifestyle, I earned my doctorate in microbiology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. With this new piece of paper in hand, our first child, as well as a tour in Iraq during OIF I & II, we moved to New Mexico where I performed research in biodefense areas. This research moved us to a position in Kansas City, MO. During our first moths in KC, we searched a 60 mile radius from downtown for a large tract of land. Our criteria included a small home, outbuildings, fencing, and a nearby country church. We also talked with the extension agencies in both Missouri and Kansas. From these talks and the information provided we concluded that our dream of a commodity-cattle-ranch was not feasible for us with having only limited capital. We then reduced our land size requirements and found the place we now reside, our home. While settling into our home, we began to learn more about nontraditional, non-commodity ways of agriculture which were not included in our formal nor in our experiential education. We are now practicing beyond organic, natural animal stewardship to directly bring you the nutritious products you deserve. Hello there, Internet! Somewhat long time, and, uh. . . infinitely no see. One of these days we should do a webcam thing so that we can rectify that. UNTIL THEN, though, you will have to make due with our wondrous vocal patterns. Listen to these MP3s while looking at the spectral view. It’ll blow your mind, seriously. Wow, that got off-topic fast. In any case, do we have some news for you: First and foremost, the Sordid Dystopia Kickstarter is doing amazingly well. I applaud all of you who are backing us presently. I never expected us to reach our initial funding goal in under a day, or twice our funding goal in under a week, and I never expected us to be talking about reaching almost triple our funding goal before this project ended. Seriously, you guys are the best. Second, Nate and I did a roundtable discussion of Monsters and Other Childish Things with one Ross Payton. He apparently does a roleplaying podcast too. We’re going to be in their 70th Episode “There’s Monsters in the School, Tom.” The episode isn’t yet out, but it should be out shortly after this episode goes live. I figured I just needed to get the word out on this Role Playing Public Radio show Ross and his friend Tom do. Thirdly, Nate got us all into the Little Fears Nightmare Edition recently. We’ve played 8 sessions of a campaign composed of prefab adventures from the books, the Campfire Tales series, and things that we’ve written ourselves. It’s shaping up to be a pretty rad set of things and hopefully it’ll be totally awesome when it gets posted here eventually. What this means for your right now is that we have a whole bunch of Little Fears goodies for every one of our listeners: Nate recently wrote a scenario for a contest run by Little Fears superfan Jack O’Tears. The theme of the contest was Duality, and Nate wrote a whole adventure about a Monster and a child who complete each other. You can get the adventure here or go to the Little Fears Facebook Group and take it from there. It had to be fairly short, so be prepared to improv or write a couple things and make it your own for your group.
