Welcome to Episode 1688 of the Italian Wine Podcast. Today, Juliana Colangelo, host of Masterclass US Wine Market, leads a wine2wine Business Forum 2023 session entitled “Can wine podcasts be an effective sales channel?” together with MJ Towler, Adam Teeter and Felicity Carter. Abstract: In 2005 Apple officially added podcasting to its iTunes Music Library. In a live interview in 2006, Steve Jobs demonstrated how anybody could create a podcast using their Mac and share it with the world. In 2013 Apple announced 1 billion podcast subscribers and in 2020 Joe Rogan signed an exclusive podcast deal with Spotify for $100m+. What does this growth mean in terms of podcast potential as a wine sales channel? How can wine producers use podcasting to increase sales? Is it possible to successfully harness podcast audiences and create wine sales through listens? What strategies are available to create wine sales through pods? Which are the most effective wine podcasts for driving wine sales increases? In this round table session, seasoned podcasters MJ Towler, Felicity Carter, Juliana Colangelo IWA and Adam Teeter explore the opportunity for using podcasts as sales channels for wine. Her first sip of Albariño solidified her love of wines and her first winemaking internship solidified her future as a winemaker. After completing her post postgraduate in enology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid Laura started her career in La Mancha and worked in different wine regions in Spain. A few years later, Laura left Spain and traveled to New Zealand and Chile learning as much as she could about winemaking and the influence of terroir in different wine regions. Finally, Laura took a job in the Napa Valley. For over a decade, Laura has been making wine in Napa Valley as the Associate Winemaker for Cardinale, Lokoya, Mt Brave, La Jota, and Winemaker for Galerie. Laura joined Ehlers Estate as Winemaker and General Manager in 2018. For her, winemaking is a process of discovery, where minimal intervention is done in the cellar but the process of understanding the needs of each individual vine in the vineyard never ends. “My greatest aspiration is to make wines which are reflective of the unique fruit and minerality character of the Ehlers Estate vineyard, with long finishes and distinct textures that are difficult to forget on the palate.” You can learn more by visiting: Website: Ehlers Estate Instagram: @ehlersestate Twitter: @EhlersEstate Instagram: @aquilau79 More about Juliana Colangelo: Juliana Colangelo is a Vice President at Colangelo & Partners, the leading wine and spirits communications agency in the U.S. Juliana joined Colangelo & Partners in 2013 with previous experience in events, hospitality, and nonprofit development. Welcome to Episode 1444 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Emilia Aiello. More about Emilia Aiello: Emilia Aiello is an Oakland, CA native, born to an immigrant Italian family. Unknowingly, she began her wine career in her cousin's restaurant in their hometown of Oakland, California. In 2012 she moved to New York City and continued her restaurant career at Lupa Osteria Romana in Greenwich Village. In 2016 she accepted the Wine Director position and in 2018, took on the dual role of General Manager/Wine Director. Emilia's love to learn, combined with her interest in discovering her Sicilian roots, led her to take a profound interest in southern Italian wines. In 2016 she passed the rigorous Vinitaly International Wine Ambassador exam which only led her further down the rabbit hole. In 2018 she embarked on a grape harvest adventure on Mt. Etna, Sicily, where she worked with Ciro' and Stef Biondi. Since then, she frequently travels to the region and in 2021 made the first accurate and publicly accessible map of the Etna DOC wine region. After a pandemic harvest in Ciro', Calabria with Francesco and Laura De Franco of 'A Vita, Emilia began her current business endeavor, Cittavino & Co.- an online wine company dedicated to the study and promotion of lesser known southern Italian wine regions. She speaks Italian fluently and travels to Italy regularly, as working with producers, walking their vineyards and cellars, has become fundamental to her documentation of the rich viticultural history of the South. Her choice to focus on smaller producers is based on her belief that wine is food and that farm work should be respected, revered, and earn a livable wage. Emilia is constantly in awe and in search of the intersectionality of cultures. She is so excited to share the cosmopolitan history of southern Italy with you! More about Gary: When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in political science, he didn't yet know where life would take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, when he traveled to Louis Martini for a business trip. After that experience, Gary knew he wanted to become an expert, so he enrolled in the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World's wine courses. That enthusiasm and knowledge served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. After years of expansion, Gary's now has several locations in New Jersey, as well as a flagship location in St. Helena, CA, right across the street from Louis Martini, where it all began for Gary. Gary and his wife, Liz, spend part of the year living in their house in St. Helena, so on any given day, you may run into Gary helping guests find the perfect wine. Welcome to Episode 1360 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Matthew Kaner. More About today's guest: Fermented grape juice has allowed me to have a voice within an industry full of characters and strong personalities. I quite enjoy how things smell and taste. In fact, as a kid I wouldn't eat anything until I smelled it first. Now a 14+ year veteran of the wine world, my humble wine career began at the Wine Cask Wine Store in Santa Barbara, California where I also grew up. Moving to Los Angeles in 2006 brought an opportunity to work at Silverlake Wine, where I worked my way up from holiday help to the manager. In 2009, my close friend Dustin Lancaster came to him with an idea…”I want to open a wine bar and I'll only do it if you'll do it with me.” The only acceptable response: “you tell me when and where.” In July of 2010, Los Feliz's Bar Covell opened with a new spin on wine…ditch the traditional wine list and use your words. Bar Covell has a program of over 150 wines by the glass and the staff instead start a conversation/interaction with each guest to gage what they are in the mood for at that moment. This was just the beginning... I was graciously was named one of the Sommeliers of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine in 2013. In early 2015 with Lancaster and new partner David Gibbs, the trio opened Augustine Wine Bar in Sherman Oaks. Augustine has been named Best Wine Bar in American by Food & Wine Magazine and gets critical acclaim for its Vintage Collection of wines that it makes available by the glass and by the bottle on their in-house chalk boards nightly. In August of 2019 Wine Enthusiast Magazine named me to the 40 Under 40 Tastemakers list for 2019! Steve Dveris Tom Simoneau has brought Steve Dveris, head of the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience, to California Wine Country with Harry Duke and Dan Berger. Steve Jaxon is away again this week. The Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience takes place from May 18-21, 2023. Also in the studio today are Sarah Quider, VP of winemaking for Foley Family Wines and chef Crista Luedtke. The first wine is the 2022 Ferrari-Carrano Fumé Blanc labeled North Coast and which is mainly a Sonoma County product, with a little bit from Lake County and Mendocino County. They prune the vines so the grapes have a lot of sunlight, which gives more tropical characteristics. One third of the wine is aged in neutral barrels. Dan Berger describes a trace of fresh fennel in the aromatics. It is succulent without being sweet. Dan mentions the trees in the Ferrari-Carrano grounds. To go with this wine Crista Luedtke has made a beet salad. She will also make a mushroom and walnut paté, which is vegan. Crista has two restaurants in Guerneville, Boon and the new one, Brot. Boon will be featured at the HWFE. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The next tasting is a Chalk Hill Chardonnay. The grapes grow in light-colored volcanic soil which gives some minerality. Dan describes it as rich, oily and seductive. It would go well with seafood in a cream sauce. Crista has paired it with her Moroccan carrots. She has a secret Moroccan sauce. They have a dressage arena on the property. As an accompaniment, they are also sampling the Bavarian style pub cheese from Brot, Crista's new restaurant, with some little pretzel bites. The Banshee Pinot Noir goes perfectly with it. Banshee Banshee has a little tasting room in Healdsburg, across the street from Valette. It has vinyl records and couches and a “lounge vibe.” They started the label to make a good Pinot Noir at an affordable price. It is a fruit forward Pinot Noir, to express the varietal. Banshee winemaker Alicia Sylvester was on California Wine Country last year, on this June 1, 2022 episode. There are over 140 wineries participating at the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. You have to be in wine country to get such a lineup that includes everything from small boutique wineries to great famous labels, from here and abroad. There is a car show, a tractor show, a new beer garden, spirits, cupcakes and more. Finally they taste a 2018 Silverado Vineyards Cabernet from Napa. It comes from two vineyards, in Stags Leap and Coombsville. Dan describes its balance between the Stags Leap character with the acidity from the cooler Coombsville. It reminds him of the 1986 and he thinks this one will age very well.

More About today's guest: Over the past 30 years, Shelley Lindgren has channeled her deep-seated appreciation for Italy into an award-winning career in wine. She earned her sommelier's certificate while working at San Francisco's iconic restaurant, Fleur de Lys, and went on to earn a culinary certificate at the Tante Marie Cooking School, and became a wine instructor for 12 years. In 2004 A16 opened, a neighborhood restaurant inspired by the cooking of Campania with an emphasis on certified VPN Neapolitan pizza. A research trip that began in Naples quickly evolved into an exploration of southern Italy's rural, family-run wineries that had remained otherwise unknown outside of the country. Driving from village to village while relying on paper maps, Shelley unearthed lesser-known grapes, such as Fiano di Avellino and Nerello Mascalese, which she returned with enthusiasm to share stateside. In 2015, Shelley received the James Beard Award for "Outstanding Wine Program" at A16. A member of Les Dames d' Escoffier, Shelley's involvement in the local community extends beyond the walls of her restaurants, and she serves as a board member of Guild of Sommeliers and Marin's Slide Ranch. A16 Food + Wine, won "Cookbook of the Year" and "First Book/The Julia Child Award" at the 2009 IACP Cookbook Awards. In 2012, she co-authored her second book, SPQR: Modern Italian Food & Wine. Niki Williams & Alexandra O'Gorman Winemaker Niki Williams of Chateau St Jean is back with Alexandra O'Gorman of Foley Family Wines on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. They were here a month ago on this June 8, 2022 episode which was cut short by an impending NBA broadcast. So now they are back for a full show. Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn will also join us. Alexandra O'Gorman tells about Foley Family Wines. As the owners retired they acquired a central California winery and named it Foley Estate. Later they purchased other family wineries, now totaling nineteen. Niki Williams grew up in central Illinois among corn, soybeans and beef cattle. She worked for a travel company based in Chicago and got an exposure to wine by visiting other countries. The idea of terroir proved attractive. After working in theater she studied winemaking at UC Davis. She has been at Chateau St. Jean for the last four months. She worked for Merryville Family Wines at the Starmont Winery and previously at Franciscan Winery and its successors. “It's been a really good crash course in winemaking,” working with different varieties, vineyards and wine styles over the last ten years. Chateau St. Jean The winery opened in 1972 and was one of the first wineries in Sonoma Valley. It was famous for Chardonnay even then. Its previous owners stopped winemaking at the property so is the first winemaking at Chateau St. Jean since 2016. They are finishing some construction now. Chateau St. Jean has always been a destination for big events. It's a beautiful facility with amazing gardens in a hillside setting. Tom Simoneau says their blend called Cinq Cépages is like the Mouton Rothschild of Sonoma County. They won Wine of the Year for their 1996 Cinq Cépages blend. That was the first Sonoma County wine to win that prestigious award. They also have a 2016 Cinq Cépages to taste. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. A 2020 Sauviglon Blanc from Alexander Valley is next. The vineyard is in a cool area so the wine is nicely acidic. From a single vineyard block, it used 85% in stainless steel and 15% neutral French oak barrels. Robert Mondavi called his Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc so that people would know it was dry. It worked and many followed him. Alexandra O'Gorman describes her job, whose title reaches all the way around her business card. She coordinates hospitality activity of nine properties in Sonoma County for Foley Family Wines. The company mission is to have good food and wine experiences in their locations. The grouop includes several historic properties like Chateau St. Jean and Sebastiani. They taste a Chardonnay that Tom Simoneau says is well balanced, creamy and with a full mouth feel. It has a little nuttiness from the oak and a hint of nutmeg, but also bright crisp citrus fruit. It is sourced from around Sonoma County so there is a range of fruit flavors from tropical to melon, apple and peach. It was fermented and aged in barrel and 45% new French oak. It is only available at the winery or through the wine club. Niki Williams has also brought a 2018 Alexander Valley Malbec, which Tom Simoneau calls a “knockout.” Tom Simoneau describes it as a combination of Merlot and Cab. If the color purple had a taste it would be Malbec. She describes it as voluptuous and Barry notes the silky tannins.

Alexandra O'Gorman, Tom Simoneau & Niki Williams. Chateau St. Jean winemaker Niki Williams and Alexandra O'Gorman from Foley Family Wines join Steve Jaxon, Harry Duke and Tom Simoneau on California Wine Country today. Dan Berger is away this week. Alexandra O'Gorman's title is Senior Director of Luxury Sonoma Estates at Foley Family Wines. Niki Williams is the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean winery. Alexandra tells how the company has invested in many family wineries and they have also acquired Chateau St. Jean. They have done renovations to the winery and they have brought winemaking back to Chateau St. Jean. Tom Simoneau tells the story of how a previous owner stopped winemaking on site. Wine has not been made there since 2016, so all the equipment is being renovated and replaced. The estate vineyards are also being refreshed. While they are tasting a Pinot Blanc, Niki Williams tells her winemaking history. With a bachelors degree in English she graduated without “a clue.” She stated doing acting and improv and worked with a travel company where she got an exposure to wine while traveling to Europe. She decided to become a winemaker and studied at UC Davis. She worked at the Starmont winery and for some Constellation wineries, Franciscan, Mt. Veeder and The Prisoner Wine Company. Alexandra O'Gorman describes her job for Foley Family Wines where she oversees several wineries that they have purchased. They focus on a guest experience with fine wine, beautiful locations and new culinary choices. Their first vintage was 1974. Chateau St. Jean is promoting their Summer Fête, a French-themed soirée, on July 9. Tasting Chateau St. Jean Wines They are tasting the Alexander Valley Pinot Blanc. Most of the fruit is from Robert Young vineyards. 40% fermented in barrels and 60% in steel tanks, so it is balanced between the barrel & lees contact flavors and the steely flavors. It has creamy pear flavors from the oak but is very well balanced. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The Belle Terre Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine and one of the first. They try to capture the unique terroir of the vineyard. This vineyard is in Alexander Valley in the southern part, close to the Russian River. This is 100% barrel fermented for the creamy mid-pallette texture. It does not get full ML so you also get the fresh acidity. Tom Simoneau compares it to his own Brenda Lee Chardonnay, made similarly. It is less creamy than the Pinot Blanc. The acidity brings out the lovely minerality on the finish, which comes from the soils. The vines have been around since at least the early 70s. Lastly they taste a Pinot Noir, which Niki calls her favorite grape. This is the 2017 Benoit Ranch Pinot Noir. This vineyard is in the northwest corner of Carneros in Sonoma. Tom Simoneau likes the finish, it has a “soft grip.”

Alicia Sylvester, the winemaker at Banshee Wines, is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Harry Duke. Banshee Wines got started among three friends in a bar. It was, “very whimsically put together.” They wanted to make an affordable Pinot Noir of quality from Sonoma County. The name banshee emerged almost accidentally at the last minute. The cockatrice on the bottle is their symbol but they didn't have the name until someone made a well-timed wisecrack about a barking dog. “A banshee is a spirit in Irish folklore known for its shrieking and wailing,” quotes Harry Duke from Wikipedia. The brand was born of those friendships and they wanted their tasting room to resemble their apartment, so it is casual, with a couch. It does not look like a traditional tasting room. The Banshee tasting room is located in Healdsburg. Foley Family Wines purchased Banshee in 2018. Alicia grew up on a farm and was active in 4H. She took classes in dairy and in wine and she realized that was her future. She studied wine business and did internships in labs. She went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo while their program was still building up. She even went to Australia, Italy, Denmark, South Africa and Argentina, and back to California. With all of her experience she is now leading the team. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. They taste a Sauvignon Blanc, which has a bit of tarragon and lemon flavors. It has some herbal components too. Dan Berger has also brought a cellar wine to taste, a 2011 La Crema Pinot Noir from Monterey County. Banshee also makes a Rosé, which they taste. In the past they have done one from Mendocino but now they are making it in Sonoma from Pinot.

When can wine faults actually improve the taste of wine? Does learning about wine decrease your enjoyment of it? Can wine experts really distinguish between different types of wine? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with wine writer and educator, Nikki Goddard. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights How did Nikki end up recommending a wine that was a little too close to home for a customer? Which unusual query about palm wine did Nikki receive while working with wine.com? Why should the infamous study showing that wine experts can't distinguish between red and white wine be taken with a grain of salt? What did Nikki learn from a blind tasting experiment she did with her non-expert friends? Can learning about wine decrease your enjoyment of it? What makes the wine world seem so intimidating? When can wine faults actually improve the taste of wine? Which lesser-known wine regions should you try to experience?   Key Takeaways I like Nikki's fresh take on how some wine faults may be desirable, and even improve the taste of a wine, or at least, be part of its character rather than a flaw. I love her story about tasting Domaine de la Romanee-Conti as a way of showing how much our expectations and knowledge of wine influence our taste and perception of it. I have to thank Nikki for finally debunking those super annoying studies that say wine experts are easily fooled when the methodology behind is as misleading as the clickbait headlines.   Watch Party Join me for the debut Watch Party of the video of this conversation that I'll be live-streaming for the very first time on Zoom on Wednesday, August 11th at 7 pm eastern. Banshee Wines in 2009 at a bar in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco. With money borrowed from friends and family, Banshee Wines was launched with eight barrels of coveted Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The initial intent was to make wines that tasted like the best California had to offer, but were priced so that everyone could enjoy them. After a few years, they migrated up to the small but bustling town of Healdsburg, in the heart of Sonoma County. From here, they've developed strong relationships with the owners and growers of some of the best and most coveted vineyards in Sonoma, working in lock step with them to produce wines of depth, purity and balance.  They strive to make wines with the complexity and deliciousness of those found at the very top of the quality and price scale, but at a price that is affordable for everyone and not just the uber-wealthy.  The Banshee Tasting Room opened in August of 2013 in downtown Healdsburg and today the Banshee Wines mission remains the same as it was in those early days – to craft distinctive wines that over-deliver in every possible way.  If you want to try any of the Wines Jill tasted on the show you can ORDER ONLINE or from the BIG RED LIQUORS APP for Curbside Pickup Service. Today I'm including a discussion with Mark Turnbull - Chief Executive Officer and Director of Foley Wines.  Foley Wines wholly owns a collection of iconic wineries and brands: Martinborough Vineyard, Te Kairanga and the Lighthouse Gin brand in Martinborough; Grove Mill and Vavasour in Marlborough; and, Mt Difficulty in Central Otago. It is NZX listed with US investor and businessman - Bill Foley - its major shareholder. Bill is a major investor in the US wine industry and his company Foley Family Inc. is a Top 20 wine company in the US, owning 17 wineries with over 150 dedicated sales personnel in the US.  Mark's career started as an accountant with Ernst and Young, then for the next 16 years he was Managing Partner of the brand consultancy Designworks. Mark was Chairman of the New Zealand Wine Fund when it was acquired by Foley Family Wines in 2009. In 2011, Mark had a sabbatical year and attended London Business School where he completed a Masters of Science in Leadership and Strategy with Distinction. The discussion provides really interesting insight into how and why we need to be brand builders in New Zealand, the importance of storytelling and creating brand experiences - both in the vineyard and virtually - for consumers to connect, continuing to drive the shift from bulk to being a premium producer. We talk about foreign investment and what motivates investors like Bill Foley and others - and its not just about profit. Its often about creating something special and a strong feeling of connection to New Zealand. Finally, we look to the future and what that might look like and how consumers will be more driven to seek out brand stories, to understand the inputs, values and overall sustainability of the products that they consume. Host biography:Jordan Small: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordancsmall/jsmall@nzuscouncil.orgGuest biography:Mark Turnbull: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-turnbull-143a1232/https://www.foleywines.co.nz/For comments and feedback:Email: thefridaydownload@nzuscouncil.orgFacebook: facebook.com/nzuscouncilTwitter: twitter.com/nzuscouncilWebsite: nzuscouncil.orgCredits – opening and closing music:Happy Boy Theme Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/About the NZUS CouncilEstablished in 2001, we are a non-partisan, non-government organisation focused on advancing New Zealand's interests in a strong bilateral relationship with the US.
