Dr Saeko Yazaki presents comparative research on the concept of the 'self' in Sufism and Zen Buddhism. The seminar, which drew scholars from multiple disciplines, examined striking parallels between these geographically and culturally distant traditions. Dr. Yazaki's presentation centered on a textual analysis of two foundational works: "The Revival of the Religious Sciences" by the Sufi scholar Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) and "The Treasury of the True Dharma-Eye" by Zen master Dōgen (d. 1253). The seminar highlighted how both traditions, despite their separation, share important theoretical and practical concerns, particularly regarding lived experience and the transformation of the self. Dr. Yazaki explained that al-Ghazālī emphasises disciplining the self (nafs) to purify the heart for divine remembrance, while Dōgen stresses the importance of learning and ultimately forgetting the self (jiko) in Buddhist practice. While previous scholarship has compared these influential figures to Jewish and Christian theologians or European philosophers, Dr. Yazaki's innovative approach places them in direct conversation with each other for the first time. Her analysis revealed not only remarkable similarities but also fundamental differences at both doctrinal and practical levels. A key insight from the seminar was the importance of faith in both traditions, balancing the widely recognised philosophical sophistication of these texts with their spiritual foundations.
A selection of excerpts from the texts Tamhidát and Laváyeh by Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī . Translated by Ali Yansori - with thanks to Ali for gifting this beautiful translation. Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī (1098–1131) (Persian: عین القضات همدانی), was a Persian jurisconsult, mystic, philosopher, poet and mathematician who was executed by the Seljuk rulers at the age of 33 on charges of heresy. He is one of the many overlooked figures of the pre-modern Islamic tradition. Born in Hamadhan in Seljuk Iran to a family of prominent Shāfi'ī scholars, by the age of 20 he had mastered Arabic, Persian, jurisprudence, ḥadīth, Qur'ān, poetry, kalām (dialectical theology), philosophy and various strands of mystical thought. A student of Aḥmad al-Ghazālī he became an eminent scholar and mystic in his own right, composing various works in both Persian and Arabic, the most important of which were Tamhīdāt and the Zubdat al-Haqāʾiq fī Kashf al-Khalāʾiq. Much of his mystical philosophy was focused on the concept of divine love. Ultimately, the noblest of all substances, gold. Similarly, the work of al-Ghazāli can be seen as a means of transforming our hearts toward bliss. Clearly, it must be emphasized that the author had an otherworldly conception of happiness. Nevertheless, according to al-Ghazāli in this podcast, our guest Ulrich Rudolph, one can already attain a taste of otherworldly bliss in this life. The book itself, however, does not clumsily spread any supposed otherworldly ideas, but should serve the opening of man for experiences, ultimately for the experience of divine light. The way to it is by no means simple, but challenges the human being with all his abilities theoretically and practically/ethically.Find the German and the English transcript on our homepage: www.metis.ethz.ch. Peter Adamson's book Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna): a Very Short Introduction (Oxford UP, 2023) provides an introduction to the most important philosopher of the Islamic world, Ibn Sīnā, often known in English by his Latinized name Avicenna. After introducing the man and his works, with an overview of the historical context in which he lived, the book devotes chapters to the different areas of Ibn Sīnā's thought. Among the topics covered are his innovations in logic, his theory of the human soul and its powers, the relation between his medical writings and his philosophy, and his metaphysics of existence. Particular attention is given to two famous arguments: his flying man thought experiment and the so-called “demonstration of the truthful,” a proof for the existence of God as the Necessary Existent. A distinctive feature of the book is its attention to the relationship between Ibn Sīnā and Islamic rational theology (kalām): in which we see how Ibn Sīnā responded to this tradition in many areas of his thought. A final chapter looks at Ibn Sīnā's legacy in both the Islamic world and in Latin Christendom. Here Adamson focuses on the critical responses to Ibn Sīnā in subsequent generations by such figures as al-Ghazālī, al-Suhrawardī, and Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī. Peter Adamson is professor of Philosophy at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He received his BA from Williams College and PhD from the University of Notre Dame. From 2000 to 2012 he was a member of the Philosophy Department at King's College London, and he maintains a connection to King's. But his primary position is now as Professor of Late Ancient and Arabic Philosophy at the LMU in Munich. The author of numerous monographs and articles on ancient and medieval philosophy, especially Neoplatonism and philosophy in the Islamic world, he also hosts the History of Philosophy podcast, which appears as a series of books with Oxford University Press. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cocon-spirituel/message

ALLAH EXISTS Shaikh Muhammad Rebhâmî, one of the renowned Islamic scholars, relates in the fifteenth page of his book entitled Riyâdun-nâsikhîn, borrowing from the book entitled Zâd-ul-muqwîn: The Byzantine Kaiser sent an envoy to Me'mûn bin Hârûn, the seventh Abbasid Khalîfa. An awesome and arrogant man was with the envoy. The envoy said to the Khalîfa, “This man is an irreligious unbeliever. He does not believe in a creator. Byzantine priests failed to answer him. If the Islamic scholars manage to silence him, they will make millions of Christians and Muslims happy.” The scholars of Baghdâd said that there was only one scholar to answer that man, and he was Ahmad Nishâpûrî. The Khalîfa decided on a certain hour of a certain day and ordered all the scholars to convene at the palace. Nishâpûrî was rather late for the session, so he offered the following apology: “I saw something astonishing and quite unusual on my way. Watching it made me late. As I was waiting for the ship at the shore of the Tigris River, a huge tree came out of the earth. Then it fell down and broke into pieces, which presently turned into planks of wood. Then the planks came together to make a ship. Without a captain the ship began to sail.” When the Byzantine unbeliever heard these words he sprang to his feet and said, “This man must be crazy. Are those things ever possible? He who says so is a liar. One must be without a brain to believe him.” Nishâpûrî interrupted him and said, “When these things cannot take place on their own, how can so many astonishing things on the earth come into being on their own? Mustn't a person be even more idiotic and more lowly to deny the creator of all these things?” Thereupon the unbeliever said, “Now I realize and believe that the entire existence has a creator.” Expressing the statement LÂ ILÂHA IL-L-ALLAH, he became a Muslim. It is narrated that a similar event took place during the time of Imâm Ghazâlî. Khalîfa Me'mûn passed away in the hijrî year 218. Endless Bliss First Fasicle | Page 297
In this episode AJ Langley speaks to the Joseph Lumbard about Sufi mystic, writer, and preacher, Aḥmad al-Ghazālī. We talk about the metaphysics of love, getting ready for death, giving your older bother a crisis of faith and taking his job, and how hard it is to do research on people who think that your research is a waste of time. In this episode we speak with Ghaz who talks about his transition from being a pharmacist to an actor.
Allâhu ta'âlâ is the creator of the worlds and heavens. He is the One who created mountains, seas, trees, fruits, metals, germs, animals, atoms, electrons and molecules. As He ornamented the first heaven with stars, so He ornamented the earth by creating human beings. He created simple substances, elements. Compounds came into being through His creation. He is the One who created everything out of nothing. Everything other than Him was nonexistent. None of them is eternal. All righteous religions declare that everything other than Allâhu ta'âlâ came to being later while having been nonexistent and that there is nothing eternal except Allâhu ta'âlâ. They say that those who know others as eternal are disbelievers. Imâm-i Ghazâlî, the Proof of Islam, said in his book al-Munqidhu 'aniddalâl (reproduced by offset press by Hakîkat Kitabevi) that he who knows anybody besides Allâhu ta'âlâ as eternal is a kâfir (unbeliever). The Qur'ân al-kerîm communicates that those who know the heavens, the stars and other things as eternal are liars. There are many âyat-i-kerîmas showing that the 'âlams were created out of nothing. Extremely dissolute is the person who contradicts the Qur'ân by following his mind, which may go wrong at any time. Unless Allâhu ta'âlâ gives light to a person, he will not be enlightened. Asad Tarsin, author of Being Muslim: A Practical Guide, speaks with Joshua Lee Harris, a specialist on the work of Thomas Aquinas, on his article for Renovatio, “The Human Arts of Graceful Giving and Grateful Receiving.” In their conversation, Harris explains how his desire to understand gratitude grew from wanting to inculcate gratefulness in his own life and also from encountering people who affirmed gratitude despite facing extreme adversity. This experience, as well as his philosophical and theological exploration of the topic, led him to approach being grateful not only as an emotion, but as a matter of cognition and attentiveness to life. He also discusses how the Roman philosopher Seneca underscores the intention of the giver as an important consideration that distinguishes generosity and gratitude from other social interactions. Tarsin and Harris exchange ideas about humility as a prerequisite for true gratefulness, Imam al-Ghazālī's three components of gratitude, and what evolution can't explain about gratitude. Joshua Lee Harris specializes in the philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Asad Tarsin is a medical doctor and author of Being Muslim: A Practical Guide.

In this episode, Dr Mustafa Banister takes over hosting duties and is joined by Kenneth Goudie to discuss his historian, Burhān al-Dīn al-Biqāʿī (d. 1480). Burhān al-Dīn al-Biqāʿī(809/1406–885/1480) was a fifteenth-century Qurʾān exegete and historian active in Cairo. Originally from the village of Khirbat Rūḥā in the Anti-Lebanon mountains, he moved at a young age to Damascus before settling in Cairo, where he became a student of Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852/1449). Through the patronage of Ibn Ḥajar, al-Biqāʿī was appointed the personal tutor of Sultan Jaqmaq and the resident Qurʾān exegete at the Ẓāhir Mosque; he later became a confidante of Sultan Īnāl, and was closely associated with his court. He is best known to modern scholarship for his embroilment in three controversies, which were respectively on the use of the Bible in Qurʾān exegesis, the poetry of Ibn al-Fāriḍ, and the theodicy of al-Ghazālī: these three controversies defined the downward trajectory of his later career from 868/1464 until his death in 885/1480.

In the second session of our second semester of our weekly class on Imam Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad al-Ghazālī’s Exploring the Marvels of the Heart, we explore “How the Heart Relates to Knowledge”. Centering around answering the questions “How does the heart access its treasures?” and “What is inspiration?”, this session covers pages 51-56 of the text. “How does the heart access its treasures?” The “treasures” of knowledge. Knowledge is acquired through sense perception (study), which also involves insight (capacity to obtain knowledge) and reflexion (processing of knowledge) “What is inspiration?” Knowledge that is given as a pure gift by God. The method and/or cause may be known or unknown Method Known: Revelation through Angels to the Prophets (The Prophets perceive the Angels) Method Unknown: Inspiration / visions / intuitive sense or true dream obtained to the Righteous Knowledge of the outward and knowledge of the inward must come together It is not enough to focus on self purification, isolation, and the esoteric. It is necessary to embark on the journey with companionship and mentorship, and to attain knowledge of the Sacred creed and worldly responsibilities.
In the first session of our second semester of our weekly class on Imam Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad al-Ghazālī’s Exploring the Marvels of the Heart, we explore “How the Heart Relates to Knowledge”. Centering around answering the questions “How does the heart access knowledge?” and “What is the relationship between knowledge and spirituality”, this session covers pages 45-50 of the text. “How does the heart access knowledge?” Imam al-Ghazālī’s categorization of knowledge: Knowledge pertaining to the intellect: Axiomatic: An axiom is considered true innately or intuitively Acquired: Empirically / experientially obtained Knowledge pertaining to the Divine Law: Do not have access to it except through revelation “What is the relationship between knowledge and spirituality” It is by purifying our hearts that we gain access to knowledge You can also view detailed class notes, supplemental materials, and references for our first semester on Google Classroom. You can join our Google Classroom by using the code 9kfttk.
In our fifth session of our weekly class on Imam Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad al-Ghazālī’s Exploring the Marvels of the Heart, we explore “How the Heart Relates to Knowledge”. Centering around answering the questions “What stops the heart from gaining knowledge?”, this session covers pages 35-44 of the text. “What stops the heart from gaining knowledge?” The heart is a mirror. When it observes the “image” of knowledge it can imbibe and reflect it. The heart then takes the form of what is put in front of it. It is the influences - what we put in front of the heart - that make it capable of receiving knowledge. We discuss Imam Ghazālī's exposition of 5 types of mirrors (heart) that are limited in attaining knowledge: The mirror that has not being formed or fashioned properly: It cannot yet reflect the world around it, like the heart that is not ready to take on knowledge - like a child The stained or dirty mirror: That heart is burdened by the darknesses of sin, failing to fulfill the right of God upon us The mirror facing the wrong direction: Analogous to the heart that is not turned towards the right "image" The mirror that is veiled: Analogous to the heart that is preoccupied with the world The mirror that does not provide adequate perspective for what you are desiring to seek: Speaks to the capacity of the heart for putting knowledge in the right place Take away: How do our hearts mirror the world around us? How is your heart mirroring the heart of your brothers and sisters? Resources and References

Shaykh Mohammed Amin Kholwadia has been called Muslim America’s greatest hidden jewel primarily owing to his deep knowledge in the Islamic tradition and aggressive engagement of and preoccupation with contemporary issues facing everyday Muslims in the West. Shaykh Amin, as he is fondly called by his students, reflects the full breadth and depth of traditional Islamic knowledge. His is a level of academic accomplishment that traces its roots to the rigor of a classical instruction in the traditional Deobandi schools of Northern India. There, he exhausted himself under the tutelage of some of the brightest minds in Muslim academia. He received his theosophical initiation and instruction from the venerated Mine of Divine Knowledge, Shaykh Mohammed Meeran, at the Sabil al-Rashad Institute in the Southern Indian city of Bangalore. After completing his studies in the subcontinent in line with the methodologies and curricula of some of the greatest luminaries of our scholarly tradition, Shaykh Amin returned to his home in England and worked as a professional translator and book reviewer. He relocated to Chicago in 1984 and since his arrival, he has served as a Muslim scholar in various capacities and as an advisor for Muslim schools, Muslim organizations, and the Council of Religious Leaders of Greater Chicagoland. Among his well-known published works are Islamic Finance: What it is and what it could be, co-authored and published in England, and a book on Qur’anic exegesis entitled A Spark From the Dynamo of Prophethood. He is currently working on a book on Ghazālian eschatology. https://darulqasim.org @DarulQasim

Why did al-Ghazālī judge "the philosophers" to be apostates? Peter finds out from Frank Griffel.
In his “Incoherence of the Philosophers,” al-Ghazālī attacks Avicenna’s theories about the eternity of the universe and insists on the possibility of miracles.
