Person of Interest Eine ältere Serie über KI.

The Filmumentaries Podcast
150 David Dozoretz - Pre-vis Pioneer, VFX Supervisor and Director

The Filmumentaries Podcast

In this episode I chat with visual effects supervisor, second unit director and digital pre-visualisation pioneer David Dozoretz about a career that traces the entire arc of how modern filmmaking shifted from analogue to digital — and how, somewhere in the middle of that shift, pre-vis went from a curious side experiment to a fundamental part of how films get planned and shot. David talks about growing up in Phoenix, falling in love with cinema the day his sister snuck him into the projection booth at the Cine Capri during The Empire Strikes Back asteroid sequence, and how a chance encounter with a Lucasfilm coffee-table book in a university bookstore set him on the path to ILM. He arrived at ILM in 1991 as an intern, became known as "the computer nerd in the art department and the art nerd in the computer department," and ended up bridging the gap between the two as digital began to take over.We get into his first feature — the original Jurassic Park — his year-long apprenticeship in the legendary ILM art department alongside Doug Chiang, Ty Ellingson, Harley Jessup, Mark Moore and Stefan Dechant, and the time he had to split a $1,400 piece of 3D software into two $700 purchase orders to get round ILM's general-manager sign-off threshold. It's a small story but it tells you everything about the era — digital tools were arriving faster than the institutions running things knew what to do with them.A big part of the conversation focuses on the early years of digital pre-visualisation. David did the first major digital previs sequence in mainstream cinema — the train and helicopter sequence in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible, the work John Knoll asked him to do that's now credited as one of the reasons the sequence got greenlit. From there he went on to spend four years working with George Lucas on The Phantom Menace, building the entire pod race in previs (a 25-minute version that almost no one has ever seen got whittled down to the 9-and-a-half-minute final), establishing his now-famous three rules of previs (no textures, no motion blur, no shadows) and then immediately having to break all three of them to convey the sense of speed and floating in the pod race itself. There are some lovely George Lucas stories too, including the time George walked into the editing room and reacted to David's droid-factory post-vis with "honestly, I was a little worried about that one — looks like it's gonna work," and the moment when George trailed off mid-sentence trying to describe a desert landscape and David — a 21-year-old kid — finished the thought with "John Ford?", which David thinks is the moment Lucas decided he could trust him. Later in the conversation we move into David's own company, Persistence of Vision, and his work on Titan A.E., Behind Enemy Lines, JJ Abrams' Mission: Impossible III, the 2009 Star Trek reboot (including the previs realisation that Vulcan being orange meant the costumes — originally designed to evoke 70s NASA — had to be completely redesigned) and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, where David served as second unit director on the first digital stereoscopic film and the production was effectively beta-testing the cameras Jim Cameron was building for Avatar. We finish on Zafari, David's 52-episode children's animated series rendered almost entirely in Unreal Engine — one of the earliest large-scale uses of real-time rendering in mainstream animation, which saved 30% of the production budget — and on a wider conversation about AI, the future of filmmaking, the importance of human authenticity, and David's lovely closing thought: study the art and history of cinema, study the drawing, not just the pencil. The tools will keep changing. The language won't. THE END OF OAK STREET : et si J.J. Abrams cachait un nouveau Cloverfield ? | Podcast Horreur

Hello! Anders Holmes is back with another solo Anders Reviews. . . episode. Halloween maybe is over, but that won't stop Anders from talking about two of his favourite horror films. Much like the Demon Knight & Bones episode, he reviews not one, but two films. Joy Ride, released in 2001 and directed by John Dahl. It was co-written by JJ Abrams, he wrote the script with Clay Tarver. And the second film and final film is The Hitcher, starring Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell. Both films make great use of their desolate and claustrophobic desert locations. Wide open roads, seedy small towns and gas stations. The two films belong to a category of films that Anders refers to as Road Horror Films. Road Terror Films or simply Highway to Hell Films. Joy Ride stars Paul Walker, Steve Zahn and Leelee Sobieski who set out on a road trip and are menaced by a murderous and mysterious truck driver after a prank goes fatally wrong. In The Hitcher, C. Thomas Howell is driving a rental car from Chicago to Los Angeles who makes the mistake of picking up Rutger Hauer's John Ryder and proceeds to make Howell's life a living hell. Joy Ride and The Hitcher are fun and suspenseful horror films set in middle of nowhere America. They both earn their cult status. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US. In Finland, it will be released in cinemas on November 5th. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The two films mentioned in this episode served as influence and inspiration for when Anders was working on the script. Follow us on our Instagram page. Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, JJ Abrams' Star Trek. Orphaned following an encounter with a strange and hyper-advanced alien ship, James Tiberius Kirk drifts through life in search of purpose. Prompted to enroll in Starfleet Academy, Kirk finds himself drawn into an epic web of fate that crosses time and space, seemingly drawing him towards the most unlikely of companions, a half-Vulcan named Spock. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

In 2000, star Tim Cruise was in top of the world. By 2006, he had a bit of a PR problem. Though his previous film War of the Worlds was a certified hit, his off the screen presence was becoming more and more of a problem. Some people would say toxic. Getting in arguments played out in public with Brooke Shields's about the need to do away with prescribed drugs. To marrying a woman who was twenty years his junior. And of course jumping on talk show couches proclaiming his love for said woman. Directors were not wanting to work with him. And the general public, the same people who had spent tons of money to buy tickets to his movies, was rapidly starting to turn on him. So after a dissolved attempt to get David Fincher to direct Mission Impossible 3, perhaps the most important movie of Cruise's career, who does he turn to in order to resurrect his career? An unknown in the cinematic universe director by the name of JJ Abrams. Listen to Matt, Garrett and Adam dissect the sequel that would set a tone that would permeate through the entire rest of the franchise. Matt, not the biggest Abrams fan, and Garrett, certainly have their opinions that have been known in the past. But what about Adam? Stay tuned. mission Impossible Ghost Protocol isn't far behind.

On this special episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with executive producer and showrunner Latoya Morgan and lead actress Rachel Hilson about DUSTER, the new TV series from JJ Abrams and Latoya Morgan now streaming on HBO Max. Set in the 1970s Southwest, the show follows the first black female FBI agent as she takes on a crime syndicate by teaming up with a gutsy getaway driver. I'm an FBI consultant on the show. DUSTER also stars Josh Holloway as the getaway driver Jim Ellis and Keith David as the boss of the crime syndicate.   After my conversations with LaToya and Rachel, I talk briefly about my role on the show as an FBI consultant and the significance of accurate portrayals of the FBI in books, TV, and movies, a major theme of my mission.   Check out episode show notes, photos, and related articles: https://jerriwilliams.com/356-duster-hbo-max-latoya-morgan-and-rachel-hilson/     Buy me a coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JerriWilliams     Join my Reader Team to get the FBI Reading Resource - Books about the FBI, written by FBI agents, the 20 clichés about the FBI Reality Checklist, and keep up to date on the FBI in books, TV, and movies via my monthly email. Every Wednesday, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property, and currently, that's Running Point. This season finale gave us some nice sibling moments, especially with Jackie, but also some highly predictable and annoying sitcom developments. Will we re-sign for season 2? That's going to depend on what else is on. Mentioned: The season 2 finale of Shrinking.Next Wednesday, we'll kick off a new show, one that reunites JJ Abrams and Josh "Sawyer" Holloway: Duster, on HBO Max. We'll start with the first two episodes, "Baltimore Changes Everything" and "Suspicious Minds." We'll be back tomorrow with our weekly roundup.

" Am I really playing with Neil Patrick Harris?" In keeping with the theme of Box Two, Neil Patrick Harris is back for his second appearance on our podcast. And not only that, he also brought a friend. Jonathan Bayme, CEO of theory11, is a longtime collaborator and Neil's bestie. They first met at a magic show Jonathan created for the Nomad Hotel in New York. Neil and Jonathan quickly bonded over a shared passion for elevating the art of magic, a deep appreciation for fine craftsmanship, and creating experiences full of wonder and joy. Jonathan created his company, theory11, with the goal of crafting magic tricks and playing cards that not only worked flawlessly, but were also beautiful to look at. Jonathan worked with Neil to produce Box Two, which was created with a very similar aesthetic and vibe. They very candidly explained the thought process behind design decisions such as relying on an online chat interface, and how they achieved certain magical effects. Box Two is gorgeous, with hefty props that felt good and looked good. I especially enjoyed hearing about the playtesting and mechanical process behind producing such a complicated boxed game. Jonathan also shares his secret to networking. Whether it's about tracking down JJ Abrams, or writing weekly emails at twelve years old to David Copperfield's longtime executive producer, I really enjoyed his stories of perseverance when it comes to making connections. Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.
