Public/Private is Gail's memoir about her life with famous producer/director Joe Papp as they founded the Public Theater in NYC. Over their 26-year relationship, Gail and Joe established a legendary partnership that built the famous theatrical institution. In her memoir, Gail gives you an inside look at the early years of the Public when plays such as A Chorus Line were just starting and then little-known actors were making their way in show business. Gail and Joe's production genius was responsible for an extraordinary body of work that launched the careers of dozens of actors, including James Earl Jones, Colleen Dewhurst, Gloria Foster, Morgan Freeman, Raúl Juliá, Kevin Kline, Mandy Patinkin, George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, Meryl Streep, and Diane Venora, all of whom make an appearance in the book.Opening in the early Sixties, Gail's narrative spans the years she and Joe worked, then lived together until Joe's death in 1991. During most of that time, Gail was the Developer of New Plays and Musicals at The Public while it staged hundreds of productions, ranging from the free Shakespeare in Central Park series to new plays, such as Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and musicals like Hair and A Chorus Line. Danny Quintana- is the president and founder of the Global High Seas Marine Preserve, a non-profit education organization dedicated to educating people on ocean wildlife issues. He is the author of several books, most recently Space and Ocean Exploration as the Alternative to World War III and Copernicus Was Mistaken, Why the Earth is Still the Center of the Universe. He is a graduate of the University of Utah in political science, B.A. (1980) and Utah's College of Law, J.D. (1983). He is a member of the Mars Society. In college he was a Rockefeller Minority and Hinckley Institute Intern. Mr. Quintana is committed to spending the next 20 years or however long he lives to creating a Global High Seas Marine Preserve. The goal is to protect all of the oceans' wildlife. Before 1955 nobody used the phrase "East Village" to describe the historic northern portion of the Lower East Side, the New York tenement district with a rich German and Eastern European heritage.But when the Third Avenue El was torn down that year, those who were attracted to the culture of Greenwich Village -- with its coffeehouses, poets and jazz music -- began flocking to the east side, attracted to low rents.Soon the newly named East Village culturally became an extension of the Village with new bookstores, cafes, experimental theaters, and nightclubs. By the mid-1960s the hepcats were replaced by hippies, flamboyant and politically active, influenced by the events of the 1960s and a slightly different buffet of drugs.At the same time, the neighborhood's Ukrainian population grew as well after the United States provided visas to thousands of refugees from Europe displaced by World War II. Joe Papp was responsible for some of modern American theater's most iconic institutions: New York City's free Shakespeare in the Park. The Public Theater. The whole idea of "Off-Broadway." We spoke with Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan about Papp's life and works, from his hardscabble childhood, through the frightening era of Joe McCarthy, to the founding of Shakespeare in the Park and The Public. Published in 2009, Turan's epic oral history of the early years of the New York Shakespeare Festival and The Public Theater is called Free for All: Joe Papp, the Public, and the Greatest Theater Story Ever Told. To create that book, he spent untold hours with Joe Papp and also talked with New York politicians, Broadway producers, and seemingly everyone else who helped Papp make Shakespeare in the Park a reality, including performers like James Earl Jones, George C. Scott, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Colleen Dewhurst, Tommy Lee Jones, and a Staten Island car-wash employee who would go on to play Romeo under the stage name of Martin Sheen. She is perhaps best known to audiences for playing the feisty Betty Rizzo in the classic film musical, “Grease,” and First Lady Abbey Bartlet on the seminal NBC television drama, “The West Wing.” She originated the role of socialite Ouisa Kittredge in the acclaimed stage and film versions of “Six Degrees of Separation,” for which she was nominated for a Tony and an Oscar. Miss Channing won the 1985 Tony Award for Best Actress for the Broadway revival of “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg,” and has won three Emmy Awards  for her work on The West Wing  as well as for her performance as Judy Shepherd in “The Matthew Shepard Story.” Other film appearances include “The Fortune,” “ The Big Bus,”  Neil Simon's “The Cheap Detective,” and “Practical Magic.” She also played the recurring role of Veronica Loy on the popular CBS drama “The Good Wife.”

In the mid-70's she moved to NYC working with alternative theatre groups (LaMama, Joe Papp's Public Theatre). Jane became head sculptor at Brooks Van Horn Costume Co. making props, masks and creatures for a large variety of venues: Broadway shows (Sweeney Todd, Dracula, Peter Pan), feature films (The Wiz, Hair), Warner Bros walkarounds, commercials, Ringling Bros Circus, and the first four seasons of Saturday Night Live. In 1978, the costume designer for SNL mentioned that the Jim Henson Company was looking for sculptors for a film called The Dark Crystal and suggested she interview. Jane was offered three weeks work to build a prototype support harness for the Skeksis they were developing. So, she left her three-year full-time job for three weeks of work at Henson's and stayed 40 years! Jane has worked in both the New York puppet shop and the London Creature Shop throughout the years. Designing/building puppets and creatures, supervising builds, and running workshops on location for Muppet/Henson films and TV series, (Dark Crystal, Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, The Storyteller, The Witches, Ninja Turtles, Dinosaurs, Muppets Tonight, The Muppets, etc.). She has also worked on a variety of talk shows, game shows, and awards shows (Oscars, Grammys, Hollywood Bowl and many more). Jane is an art director for print and media photoshoots, film posters and endless fashion shoots with Miss Piggy with Louis Vuitton, Prada and other diva designers.   Steve Whitmire Jim Henson invited Steve Whitmire to join his team in 1978 during the height of the popularity of The Muppet Show, and Whitmire had a hand in virtually every Muppet project for nearly four decades. He originated such characters as Rizzo the Rat, Lips the Trumpet Man, Miss Piggy's dog Foo-Foo, and Bean Bunny, and also sustained Richard Hunt's characters, the hapless lab assistant Beaker and codger Statler after Hunt's death in 1992. Upon Henson's death in 1990, Whitmire accepted the duty for the continuation of several of Jim's characters and is best known for his 24-years as Ernie and his 27-years as Kermit the Frog. Projects include Sesame Street and non-Muppet films such as The Dark Crystal, The Witches, Dreamchild and Labyrinth, as well as the popular sitcom Dinosaurs and the classic 1980's television series Fraggle Rock in which Whitmire originated Wembley Fraggle and Sprocket the Dog. After 19 films, 8 television series, numerous specials, multiple sound recordings, and volumes of unique live appearances, Whitmire carries forth the essential principles of the lineage as the foundation for a progressive approach to the art of puppetry in today's world and looks forward to sharing that spirit in his future endeavors. www.stevewhitmire.website   Leif Tilden Leif Tilden watched his mother drink herself into a deep depression while living with her in Berkeley California during the late 60's free love movement.   After her suicide he moved to Boston Massachusetts where he grew up in a segregated environment where the Irish, Italian and black neighborhoods beat each other up daily. Eventually he would find himself studying experimental theatre in New York City where he discovered his vulnerability through movement and the incredible falafel sandwich. Soon after that, which to him seems like a dream, he found himself inside the soul of a Teenage mutant ninja turtle.  Life was good. Soon after that he drove across country for a minimum wage job on a tv show entitled, Dinosaurs for Disney.  Life was not good and Leif will explain the details as to why on the show.   Day Murch Day worked in the theatre for many years, as a performer in Liquid Theatre, with Stomu Yamashtas Red Buddha Theatre, and the Young Vic, with appearances in provincial rep and the West End, gradually commuting a hobby of designing and making clothes into a career. An early introduction on Time Bandits to the Monty Python team led to a specialist interest in the care and presentation of difficult costumes, with work on The Meaning Of Life, Greystoke, Legend and Fifth Element and several projects for Jim Hensons London Creature Shop. This led in time to making this type of costume and he headed the Fabrication Unit for Nick Dudmans Department of Magical Creatures for the initial Harry Potter Movies, building Hagrid and other fantasticals. In children's television he helped create characters for In The Night Garden , BoohBahs and Zingzillas. He enjoyed a longterm association with the Batman franchise as Batsuit Wrangler with all the Caped Crusaders except Adam West! Now happily retired with his life partner in Wales, he doesn't miss show business.   Bruce Lanoil Bruce ”B” Lanoil, spawned in Brooklyn N.Y., raised on steady diet of Saturday morning Cartoons, Sugary cereals, Mad Magazines, Jerry Lewis and Classic Star Trek, is today, a proud and grateful 30 year veteran Muppeteer,.. Oh, the beaten path was never in the mix! As a Theater major at Cal State Northridge, a vaudevillian improvisational clown at heart, fate truly lent a “hand” when Master Puppeteer Tony Urbano chose Bruce from hundreds, for Sid and Marty Krofft's exclusive 1980 workshop. Got my degree in French and went straight into making clothes and cotumes for dancers, musicians, strippers, and royalty. Bill Wyman, David Bowie, Freddy Mercury, Jimmy Page, Princess Margaret, were some of the people I dressed. Through friends I started working in films and tv., Time Bandits, The Meaning of Life and Labyrinth were early jobs. Labyrinth led to Mother Goose Stories and an Emmy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and then Dinosaurs! So after 20 years I in London I came to Los Angeles. Since then I have worked on a lot of Superhero films, from Batman to Avengers and Guardians. I seem to have made a lot of capes! Batman to Thor and many in between.

Business Insider states that in 1996 the toy company Tyco saw their sales grow from $70 million to an astounding $350 million thanks to the Tickle Me Elmo Doll. After over thirty years as the artistic director of Washington, DC’s Tony-winning Shakespeare Theatre Company, Michael Kahn is retiring. Kahn has directed Off-Off-Broadway, Off-Broadway, and on Broadway. He directed Measure for Measure for Joe Papp’s Shakespeare in the Park. He ran, at various points, the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut, the McCarter Theatre, and the Acting Company. From 1992 – 2006, he was the Richard Rodgers Director of the Drama Division of the Juilliard School. As a director and as a teacher, Kahn has helped to usher in a new style of Shakespearean acting, one that combines the psychologically-grounded American “Method” with a British emphasis on text, tone, and technique. As Kahn opens The Orestia, the last production of his final season at Shakespeare Theatre Company, we brought him into the studio to talk about Shakespearean performance throughout the 20th century, Shakespeare’s continued relevance, and reading Shakespeare with his mother. Albert Laveau is the Artistic and Managing Director of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop. He joined the then young theatre company in 1962 where, over the years, he became one of the best-known actors in Trinidad, along-side performers such as Errol Jones, Stanley Marshall, Eunice Alleyne, Claude Reid and dozens of others who graced the Trinidad Theatre Workshop stage over the years. Among his acting credits are included leading roles in productions of “The First Born”, “Dark of the Moon”, “Moon for the Misbegotten” and “Tartuffe”. He is perhaps best-known on stage for his role as The Devil in Walcott’s “Ti-Jean and His Brothers”. Mr. Laveau also played principal roles in Walcott productions including “The Joker of Seville”, “Dream on Monkey Mountain”, “Henri Christophe”, and “The Sea at Dauphin” among others. A top-notch director as well as actor, Mr. Laveau spent part of the 1970s acting and directing professionally in the United States, where he worked with Joe Papp at the Public Theatre, was a guest director at New York University’s MFA Programme, became a resident director with the Negro Ensemble and also played in their touring production of “The River Niger” by Richard Walker for a year. Despite his success abroad, Mr. Laveau saw his work as first and foremost the development of theatre here in his home of Trinidad and Tobago. He moved back home, and in 1989 was appointed to the position of Managing and Artistic Director of his home theatre company, where he was able to put into place two programmes which he feels passionately about and are still active today: the Theatre in Education Programme which brings staged productions of plays on CXC syllabi to school children to enhance their understanding of the texts and also expose them to theatre, and the School for the Arts, which has taught hundreds of students over the past quarter century, from as young as six to the elderly, in acting, directing, design, dance and more. In his later career Mr. Laveau made appearances in several local feature films, including the 2001 “Mystic Masseur” and 2013 “God Loves the Fighter”. Joe Papp was responsible for some of modern American theater's most iconic institutions: New York City's free Shakespeare in the Park. The Public Theater. The whole idea of "Off-Broadway." We spoke with Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan about Papp's life and work, from his hardscrabble childhood, through the frightening era of Joe McCarthy, to the founding of Shakespeare in the Park and the Public. Ken's epic oral history of the early years of the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Public Theater, "Free for All: Joe Papp, the Public, and the Greatest Theater Story Ever Told," published in 2009.
