Shame and stigma are used to keep us in line and keep us quiet. Some of it is quite obvious, while other parts of the shame and stigma are more subtle and a little harder to recognise. From girlhood, we are taught that we should look and feel a certain way. The expectations of motherhood, our careers, our bodies, whether or not we should choose marriage are all laced with taboos. Today’s guest is Dr Jessica Zucker. Jessica is a clinical psychologist with a PhD who specialises in reproductive health and the author of the award-winning book I HAD A MISCARRIAGE: A Memoir, a Movement. Today we are going to unpack some of the concepts of her second book titled Normalize it: Upending the Silence, Stigma and Shame That Shape Women’s Lives. We speak about: Jessica’s own miscarriage and how women tend to blame themselves when they experience miscarriage Being told to keep pregnancy a secret until 2nd trimester & how it can leave women feeling unsupported The trifecta of silence, shame and stigma and how they all feed each other “At least” comments and how they try to ‘tidy up’ pain Objectification theory Navigating diet culture and health messaging with our kids The language we use when it comes to health and conditions like cancer of ‘beating it,’ ‘be strong’ and ‘fighting’ Perfectionism and it’s link to anxiety The narratives of what we ‘should’ want to be like married and mothers You can get a copy of Dr Jessica Zucker’s new book here: Amazon Find her on Instagram: @ihadamiscarriage And more from her website: drjessicazucker.com You can watch us on Youtube Find us on Instagram Join us on tiktok Or join the Facebook Discussion Group Tell your mum, tell your dad, tell your dog, tell your friend and share the love because WE LOVE LOVE! If somebody unjustly takes your property, rendering selfless service doesn't mean, 'Oh, yeah, let everyone violate me, and I'll just sit by passively.' That's not what it means. That's why I say it's not mutually exclusive. One must do one's duty dutifully. If you're in the corporate environment, however, I know for sure that there's a sense even from the top of the big corporations—that's why they invite people like us to come there and speak all the time. I'm going there on Tuesday to give a presentation, and there's an open invitation from so many of these corporations to come and hear wisdom that talks about higher values, like gratitude, like selflessness, Because what corporations have come to realize is that people cannot survive just by the rough and tumble of competition—that 'let us compete, and then the best person wins,' and then there's a kind of social Darwinism. People come fatigued by that, and they also don't do as well. The research, social research, is showing that people who have high-minded values can be more productive. If you do your due diligence, and you also have this sense of selflessness, like some of the corporations do, like even Marc Benioff has this way of giving away a lot of what he earns from the corporation. How's that working out? Fine. And what about other corporations like Tata? They give away, just by their bylaws, half of what they earn. I know a person very well who's a very successful entrepreneur. Lives in Singapore, but he commutes to Silicon Valley. He gives seminars on this, and the last one I attended just to observe, he was advocating for this idea that when you work for service, not only do you feel more satisfied, but he actually produced evidence, statistical evidence, that people do better financially, which is counterintuitive. And it also goes to the idea of, even within the realm of fundraising, people who give tend to be able to give more because they realize more capacity. By giving you do grow, and you can prove it on paper. And it's not just an amorphous idea, a sentimental idea, or something like that. So that's not mutually exclusive. You can protect your interests, which you should do, because you have to be able to work and earn a living, and you should do the best you can. And if there's some sense of somebody violating your space, you have to protect yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

For centuries, people have tried to get to the bottom of what makes us happy. Recent studies show regular sex makes people happiest and commuting is when we're most unhappy. And, happiness levels fluctuate throughout life. “Happiness follows a u-shaped curve,” says author and columnist David Brooks. “People are happier in their twenties. They typically decline and hit their bottom happiness category at age 47 and they tend to get happier as they get older.” These findings, though, may not tell the whole story. How does the consideration of purpose, meaning, and virtue change the definition of happiness? What can we learn from ancient philosophers, America's forefathers, and our own modern-day culture about the journey to joy? Jeffrey Rosen, author of “The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America,” Sarah Lewis, founder of the Vision and Justice Project, Adam Gopnik, author of “All That Happiness Is: Some Words on What Matters,” and Tamar Gendler, dean and philosophy professor at Yale University, join Brooks to discuss the question of happiness. This talk was recorded at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival. aspenideas.org

Join me for a fascinating conversation with one of today's leading voices in environmental studies, Daniel Macfarlane, as we explore his new book The Lives of Lake Ontario: An Environmental History (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2024). Please see the description of the book below, then tune in to hear Dr. Macfarlane share the insights, research, and stories that shaped this important work. Lake Ontario has profoundly influenced the historical evolution of North America. For centuries it has enabled and enriched the societies that crowded its edges, from fertile agricultural landscapes to energy production systems to sprawling cities. In The Lives of Lake Ontario Daniel Macfarlane details the lake's relationship with the Indigenous nations, settler cultures, and modern countries that have occupied its shores. He examines the myriad ways Canada and the United States have used and abused this resource: through dams and canals, drinking water and sewage, trash and pollution, fish and foreign species, industry and manufacturing, urbanization and infrastructure, population growth and biodiversity loss. Serving as both bridge and buffer between the two countries, Lake Ontario came to host Canada's largest megalopolis. Yet its transborder exploitation exacted a tremendous ecological cost, leading people to abandon the lake. Innovative regulations in the later twentieth century, such as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreements, have partially improved Lake Ontario's health. Despite signs that communities are reengaging with Lake Ontario, it remains the most degraded of the Great Lakes, with new and old problems alike exacerbated by climate change. The Lives of Lake Ontario demonstrates that this lake is both remarkably resilient and uniquely vulnerable. Learn more about your ad choices. Struggling to grow your subscription box on Instagram? You're not alone. In this episode of the Launch Your Box Podcast, I'm joined by Instagram strategist Michelle Gifford to break down exactly how to grow on Instagram right now—even if you're starting from scratch or feeling stuck. I first connected with Michelle after seeing my friend Heidi's Instagram take off. When I asked what changed, Heidi said, “Just do what Michelle says.” So I invited her on the podcast to share her expertise with us. Michelle shared that Instagram recently shifted from a follower-based algorithm to a content-based one—meaning quality content is what drives growth, not your follower count. That's a huge win for subscription box owners trying to get more eyes on their offers. The foundation of her Instagram strategy is what she calls the Attract, Nurture, Sell Method: Attraction content (50%): reels, trending sounds, quick wins—content designed to reach non-followers and get shared Nurture content (30%): carousels, Stories, Lives—more in-depth content that builds connection and trust Selling content (20%): simple, direct posts that show up and sell your box If you post 6 days a week, think: 3 attraction posts, 2 nurture posts, and 1 sales post. That's your 3:2:1 formula. Michelle's advice: Post attraction content that makes people think, “I know exactly who to send this to.” Use nurture content to deepen the relationship—think saves, not shares. Don't skip the selling posts! They matter just as much as the rest. We also talked about: Why b-roll video is your best friend for attraction content. How to repurpose one activity—like an unboxing—into multiple content types. Why hashtags still matter (yes, really!) Before we wrapped up, I asked Michelle to brainstorm with me one thing every subscription box owner could post today to boost their Instagram reach. Her answer was so simple and actionable: Record a b-roll clip of you packing or unpacking your box. Add a bold, shareable caption like: “Fashion advice I'd give you if I wasn't afraid to hurt your feelings.” That's it. That's attraction content. Ready to grow your Instagram with confidence and strategy? This episode is packed with practical tips, simple frameworks, and the encouragement to just start. Christopher Harding's The Light of Asia: A History of Western Fascination with the East (Allen Lane, 2024) is a fascinating survey of two millennia of Western encounters with Eastern culture, thought and religions. From Herodotus to Alan Watts, Harding profiles a range of engaging figures who have had a sometimes-overlooked impact on the way we in the West engage with and understand Asia. From the myths of antiquity through to the impact of the hippie movement, the book asks; ‘What is real? Who says? How should I live?', and provides a wealth of historical analysis, anecdotal sketches and philosophical insight to explore how the Western and Eastern ways of thinking about these fundamental questions have intersected, conflicted with and complemented each other. Guest: Christopher Harding is Senior Lecturer in Asian History at The University of Edinburgh. His previous books include The Japanese: A History in 20 Lives (2020) and Japan Story: In Search of a Nation, 1850 to the Present (2018). A frequent contributor to BBC Radio, he also writes the Illuminasia Substack. Host: Matt Fraser writes and podcasts for the Ill-Read Millennial. He lives in Berlin. Learn more about your ad choices. Are you one of the many people who enjoys a morning cup of coffee? If so, listen to the beginning of this episode which explains why you should smell your coffee when you drink it because it can help you think better and be more productive. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6881620/ In many urban areas, the number one use of land is for – parking. In fact, the United States has 4 parking spaces for every car. So, it makes you wonder then why it is so hard to find a parking spot when you need one. You are about to find out why from my guest Henry Grabar. He is a staff writer at Slate, and author of the book Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World (https://amzn.to/3RyHcbq). Listen and you will understand why parking is such a big deal. Microbes are those tiny organisms you can't see without using a microscope. This includes things such as germs, bacteria, and fungi. Microbes have a reputation of being something dangerous – that can cause illness. While that is true for some microbes, most of them don't cause harm and some are even good for you. This should come as good news since you have trillions of microbes on you and inside of you. Here to take us on a journey through the invisible world of microbes is Jake Robinson. He is a microbial ecologist and author of the book Invisible Friends: How Microbes Shape our Lives and the World Around Us (https://amzn.to/44pGRwR) Many people claim to have food allergies – that actually don't have them. They just think they do. What they really have is a food intolerance and there is a big difference.
