In this episode, deck creator and multi-media artist Courtney Alexander joined us as we discuss the King of Swords, who teaches use how to use our ideas as tools to break through barriers, obliterate the oppressive structures holding us back, and find more joy in our spirituality. We discuss art as a form of resistance and a form of transformation, God as ecosystem, and being able to read the cards just through their energy. Amanda begins the episode with the basics of the card, plus a discussion of an indigenous hero, Kandiaronk, who shows us how language can be a force of liberation. Growing up as a queer kid on the small, conservative Greek island of Cyprus, George Lizos realized that he had to choose between trying (and failing) to fit into unjust social standards, or to focus on becoming more authentically himself. Choosing the latter, he eventually became a pagan priest, and devoted his life to learning protection magick - a technique for taking our lives back from dominant ideologies and living into our authentic selves.Join us on today's episode of Between the Worlds, where George teaches us how to overcome fear of judgement, imposter syndrome, and people pleasing with his 7 Step Formula for energetic protection. We discuss energetic cords, psychic daggers (and how to remove them), digital amulets and talismans and how to protect your energy on social media (!!).George Lizos is a spiritual teacher, psychic healer, the host of The Lit Up Lightworker Podcast, and the #1 bestselling author of Be The Guru, Lightworkers Gotta Work, and Protect Your Light. One of the most common questions for tarot readers is about how people can find ways to make a living doing what they love. In this episode, we talk about how the Knight of Pentacles attempts to answer that question, and get to some ecology and mythology along the way. We discuss the Bee Goddesses of ancient Crete, pollinators, the Great Plains buffalo, astrological correspondences, and where the bulls and the bees meet in the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. This episode is dedicated to Amanda's kitty familiar, Pagan, who passed from this world in the early hours of January 12th, and all the listeners who have recently lost their loved ones. Today on Between the Worlds we discuss the transition from the Hierophant year to the Lovers year. What it means for you, and what it means for the world. Tune in to find out how 2021 deepened our understanding of lineages and ancestry in recognition of the more-than-human world; and how the Hierophant called us all to become students and masters. We discuss the concept of the daimon as an intermediary between the human and more-than-human realms, and how that may have impacted us collectively and personally. Finally, we take a deep dive into the Lovers year, anticipating likely themes relating to love, relationships, independence, interdependence, individualism, decoloniality, what we need to compost, and what the Lovers year is calling out for each of us to practice. Come walk with us in the open winds, and talk with us like the Lovers do!To find out more about our workshops either scroll down or visit our website. www.betweentheworldspodcast.com/shopTo leave a review of the podcast on iTunes, open your Apple Podcasts APP and scroll down to the comments. Welcome to our first episode on the court cards! The Page of Pentacles teaches us how to find our gifts, and more importantly, how to enjoy them! Court cards are our most requested cards, because they're so puzzling. Court cards can teach us about the masks that we wear and the personas or roles that we take on. They can indicate personality types. They can also help us understand where we are in our processes of transformation. The Page of Pentacles is the Child of Wisdom. They are practicing becoming secure in a world that is inherently unstable and constantly changing. The person in this card is GIFTED, and their task, and your task (if this card comes up for you) is to figure out how to share that gift with the world. Tune in to this episode for a discussion on how to recognize your gifts, what gifts are, medieval roles and what they have to do with us now, magical stones, astrological correspondences, Vikings, the Princess of the Echoing Hills, mitochondrial eve, and where you need to go to call in the power of the Rose of the Palace of the Earth. In this episode we talk with Danica Boyce, creator of the Fairfolk Podcast, about paganism, the otherworld, and folk traditions of abundance.Tune in as we discuss the difference between Paganism vs. Neo paganism; explore the meaning of earth-centered spirituality; how there IS a continuity of paganism from pre-Christian times; the radical idea that the earth is inherently good; whether or not the otherworld exists, and if it does, how we get there; what we mean when we say "Spirit"; desire as the force that moves us; what's wrong with the theory of evolution; the sacred; the Pagan holiday of Lunasa; “dark and twisted” monsters who live in caves; how music and poetry creates the world; and how polyphonic music changes our perception of reality. And so much more!Danica is an online pagan educator and life and business coach. She is known for her podcast Fair Folk, a project dedicated to sharing the sacred song and folk traditions of Europe. Today we're talking about the 8 of Pentacles, all about mastering your craft and makin' those coins. When the 8 of Pents comes up, you're being called to know your craft so well, to be so confident in it, that you can innovate. You're not checking to see what other people are doing or if you're getting it right. You're paying attention to the materials and listening to what wants to emerge. When the 7 of Pentacles comes up in a reading it's a sign that we're worried about all the ways we might fail. But the 7 of Pentacles offers us an opportunity to turn failure into an act of rebellion and … pleasure. In this episode we discuss the relationship between the 7 of Pentacles and the Chariot card; its correspondence to Saturn in Taurus; how 7s usually portend and initiation of some kind; and analyze it all through the lens of Jack Halberstam's glorious book, THE QUEER ART OF FAILURE. We also go into a discussion of the relationship of the 7 of Pentacles to gardening; how plants teach you about love and loss; abuelita knowledge; how to recognize when a plant wants to work with you; creating refuges; how fungi create networks of intelligence; and what we should do if we know the world is ending tomorrow. Our guest this week is queer artist, herbalist, and plant lover Flora Pacha, previously known as La Loba Loca, host of the WildWeeds Podcast, teacher of feminist brujeria workshops, keeper of pigs, and tender of lands. Many tarotologists say the 6 of Pentacles is one of the most complicated cards in the Minor Arcana. It's a card about exchange, giving and receiving, but as we know all too well, that shizz can bring up a lot for people! In this episode we talk about knowing your value (and how if you're over giving, you probably don't); guilt and being of service; leaky boundaries, how to set clearer ones and defend them; gift societies; obligation; Marcel Mauss; myths and fairytales; how the moon is not a vending machine (hey, hey CA Conrad); what the Cameron Crowe film Say Anything tells us about tarot; how to find TRUE abundance and what to do with it once you've got it... all with our illustrious guest, Liz Worth!A bit more about our guest... Circe is the first witch mentioned in the literature of the classical world. Daughter of the Sun, and the ocean nymph Perse, Circe is the Lady of the Beasts, wielder of wands, knower of plants, both poisonous and medicinal, and is queer AF. She's a goddess of secrets and necromancy (she can communicate with the dead). Her familiar is the hawk, so if you see one, recognize that Circe might be present. In this episode we discuss the beautiful demi-goddess Circe in all her glory with one of her priests, Nick Dickinson. He tells us how to invoke her, and why Circe is a goddess all witches need to know. He also shares his methods for lifting the evil eye, and breaking curses from his family lineage of Greek Folk Magic. Do you know how the evil eye gets transmitted? You might have done it yourself by accident. Find out what it is and how to lift it by tuning in!We are absolutely in love with Circe, her wisdom, her wileyness, her complexity, her mastery. We seriously could have talked with Nick for YEARS! We're so excited to share this episode with you, dear listeners. You're going to love it! A bit more about our guest... Nick Dickinson is Headmistress of Circe Academy through The Cauldron Black in Salem MA, and a professional witch and witchcraft educator with over 35 years of experience working with clients and students in both public and private settings. Ordained and initiated in a variety of tantric yoga traditions (Mahayana Buddhism), and a teacher of yoga teachers and psychics, his classes and workshops are influenced by the intersection of classical yoga theory and modern witchcraft practice. Operating through a multidimensional animist lens with a focus on Greek folklore, Nick's content welcomes all traditions at all levels and can be approached in a purely secular way. NOTE: Don't forget to pre-order the new Taschen book, Witchcraft......we mention in the episode edited by Pam Grossman and Jess Hundley. A spellbinding journey through the global history of witchcraft, the third volume in The Library of Esoterica follows this magickal tradition from its ancient roots to its modern incarnations. Through more than 400 artworks, and revelatory essays and interviews with modern practitioners. This episode is sponsored by a new film created for the Tarot reading community from The Theatre Company in Portland, Oregon. Claire Willett's The Broken Heart Spread is a deep dive into the world of modern tarot card reading. Over the course of a single day, we meet seven women at seven different personal thresholds, all looking to the wisdom of the tarot for guidance in matters of the heart. The tarot cards open doors for each of the women - and Delphine herself - to write the next chapter of their own story. The Broken Heart Spread is currently streaming through August 22nd on Stellar. Catch the film on your own time through Video on Demand, tickets start at just $20 and can be found at thetheatreco.org. We hope you enjoy this movie normalizing the magic of witches!**********************************Speaking on the truth of suffering and fear, Zora Neale Hurston said that, only "half gods are worshipped in wine and flowers. Real gods require blood.” The Five of Pentacles is not a comfortable card. It speaks of pain and privation, the moments that bring us to our knees. But, as Amanda and her guest Dr. Thea Wirsching discuss in this episode, those moments are also invitations from the real and often blood thirsty gods to wrestle with the angels of our history.5s are ruled by the hierophant. The priest, the Pope, the card in the major arcana that connects us with our spiritual traditions; in some decks it is called, "Ancestor." The 5 of Pentacles demands our humility. It is an invitation to love life in it all its blizzards and madness and freezing winds. We discuss the Little Match Girl; the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism; African American literature of the 19th century; The Wedding Crashers; how religion can offer salvation... and be a bunch of bullshit; Mercury in Taurus; and where to find refuge. Our guest is Thea Wirsching is an Evolutionary astrologer and has been practicing astrology for almost two decades. She received her PhD from UCLA, and her dissertation focused on the history and literature of American occultism. The 4 of Pentacles is about creating stability, economic security, a healthy body, a cozy home, or anything else that nourishes and sustains us. But if security is something that MOST of us long to have, then why does the 4 of Pentacles seem like such a crabby card? When we pull the 4 of Pentacles, Tarot is coming to us like a close friend, putting their hands on our shoulders, looking us in the eye and quietly asking: "Is what you're doing you right now really getting you what you want? Maybe, it's time to let go."In this episode we talk about the relationship between the 4 of Pentacles, the Emperor Card, and the Death Card; Moliere's play "The Miser"; Charles Eisenstein's "Sacred Economics"; FOMO; Snoop Dog; being in integrity; how to tell when you're operating out of fear; scarcity and abundance; trusting your own value; somatic practices to help you take the best step forward; and how to create true abundance. Our guest this episode is Liliana Perez, a psychic medium, intuitive channel, deck creator and working witch. On today's episode we're talking with Tyson Yunkaporta, author of “Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World.” Tyson is a senior lecturer in Indigenous Knowledges at Deakin University in Melbourne and is a member of the Apalech clan in Queensland, Australia. "Sand Talk" explains how the teachings of aboriginal culture can help us imagine a way to a sustainable future by emphasizing community and connection over individualism and fragmentation, and by cultivating respect for the land. In this episode, we talk about how even when Western cultures seek out indigenous knowledges, they lack a framework to be able to understand what they're being offered. Indigenous thinking, according to Tyson, is relational. It requires long term connection and commitment to the community and the land. It's not just about using didgeridoos, or smudge sticks, (or wands and cauldrons as the case may be), it's about engaging with a larger matrix of connectivity that is the TRUE essence of indigenous thinking and way of life.. We're really excited to share this episode with you! Thanks for tuning in! The 3 of Pentacles is an invitation and a reminder to create spaces that are a celebration of what you hold sacred in life and attending to the details of maintaining them. When the 3 of Pentacles comes up, we know that we are being directed to get quiet and recognize what is sacred TO US, in our own hearts, and then we are being called to build it in the world, which requires that we find collaborators. The 3 of Pentacles invites you to look for people who share the same values as you, who hold the same things as sacred, and to come together with them to build something beautiful. Join us today as we discuss how to build your own sacred space with our special guest, Maria Minnis! In this episode, Amanda breaks down the card and discusses the history of jugglers, shaman, and court jesters; the infinity symbol; Jupiter in Capricorn; how to make multi-tasking work for you (and if we're anti-capitalist should we even be doing that?)... and then breaks it all down with special guest, Sarah Potter, aka The Color Witch. The Color Witch goes deep on keeping a healthy work-life balance. So if you're feeling overwhelmed and need some strategies for keeping all your plates spinning with joy, this is the episode for you! ** TO ENTER OUR CONTEST TO WIN A FREE WORKSHOP OR 1/2 HOUR TAROT SESSION...**Simply open the Podcasts app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.Search for "Between the Worlds Podcast"Go to the Series page (not just a single episode page)Scroll down to ReviewsLeave a sweet review of the showScreenshot it and then email it to us at betweentheworldspodcast@gmail.com.If you are not a subscriber to the BTW Weird Circle, you will be entered to win free participation in the upcoming Temperance Workshop, a $55 dollar value. If you ARE a Weird Circle Subscriber, you will be entered to win a free 1/2 hour tarot session with Amanda (a $100 value). If you've already written us a review, that's no problem, just screenshot your previous review (include an update if you want), and send it our way. In this episode, Amanda tells the folktale of Tannhauser, a 13th century knight and writer of erotic poetry. (This episode is steamy!). Though the story takes place in Germany, it was a variation of a tale common throughout Europe over a thousand year period while European culture was transitioning from animist paganism to Christianity. It tells the story of a mortal man seduced by an otherworldly woman, such as a fairy queen or goddess, who lures him to her Underworld paradise. This story asks us: where does abundance actually come from? Does it come from the land, physical pleasure, healthy food, enjoying loved ones, and contributing to our community in some way? Or does abundance come from working hard, getting a well paying job, saving money, and playing by "the rules"? When Spirit presents us with its gifts, what should we do with them? How can we cherish the abundance available to us and help it grow? Tune in to find out! Please note that this is part 2 of our Ace of Pentacles episode, continuing from last week, but you can totally listen to it as a stand alone piece. Just note, it might be a little too sexy for sensitive listeners. ** TO ENTER OUR CONTEST TO WIN A FREE WORKSHOP OR 1/2 HOUR TAROT SESSION...**Simply go to Apple / iTunes Podcasts , leave a sweet review of the show, screenshot it and then email it to us at betweentheworldspodcast@gmail.com.If you are not a subscriber to the BTW Weird Circle, you will be entered to win free participation in the upcoming Temperance Workshop, a $55 dollar value. If you ARE a Weird Circle Subscriber, you will be entered to win a free 1/2 hour tarot session with Amanda (a $100 value). If you've already written us a review, that's no problem, just screenshot your previous review (include an update if you want), and send it our way. Between the Worlds returns with Season 4! Today we're talking about the ACE of Pentacles. The Ace represents the suit in its purest form. Pentacles represents the element of earth. We talk about the history of the suit, deep time, the Orphic Egg, how coins may have made civilization possible (for better or worse), the difference between an amulet and a talisman, why reversed pentagrams are considered "evil", and how to use pentacles of any kind in your magic. Welcome back Beth Pickens! My favorite art consultant, art counselor & lesbian-feminist money coach (she's a Capricorn too!) We celebrate her new book “Make Your Art No Matter What: Moving Beyond Creative Hurdles” and discuss some of its core topics — money, time, fear, grief, isolation, education, and asking for what you want. Listen for a chance to win your own copy! Beth shares tons of tips to enhance your experience of both your art and your life. Investing time and money into yourself, distinguishing isolation from solitude, and warming up for your own creative practice are all talked about. We also explore staying connected to stillness while an abundance of ways to spend time become available to us. Beth gives advice to artists with common fears like experiencing disappointment while pitching and avoiding promoting your completed projects. Beth says, “For artists, the hard thing is not attaining goals, getting the grant or getting the opportunity or the show or whatever, the hard thing is being present for it and actually enjoying it.”She reminds us all, "We can't solve interior situations with exterior things!" Follow Beth, buy her book & listen to her podcast. (Some LA libraries also have the book!) Tierney Talks is engineered & edited by Margot Padilla + hosted & produced by Tierney Finster. It's time to get your creative process together. In this episode we talk about the three basic pieces of creative practice according to Beth Pickens, author of "Your Art Will Save Your Live" and, more recently, "Make Your Art No Matter What." Even though the context for these is artists making art, we explain the solid connection with building for tech and what that means for you.
