In this episode of The Get Down, Cream & Gary Duscuss:The importance of DJ skills has decreased in the current DJ landscape, with venue owners and bookers prioritizing factors such as ticket sales and bottle service. The rise of house DJs and the popularity of EDM have shifted the focus away from technical skills and towards other aspects of DJing. While technical skills are still valued in certain markets and DJ cultures, they are less important in mainstream venues and festivals. The financial challenges of booking high-profile DJs and the high artist fees make it difficult for venues to make a profit. The value of different DJs varies depending on the market and the specific needs of the venue or event. The DJ market is highly competitive, and DJs need to navigate pricing and talent selection carefully to succeed.Nightclubs face significant challenges due to high overhead costs and tough economic conditions, especially in major markets. To succeed in the nightclub industry, it is important to focus on local and regional DJs, try new strategies, and stay at the forefront of the market.Country music is becoming more mainstream, and DJs may need to incorporate country remixes into their sets to cater to a wider audience. The sale of music rights, such as Michael Jackson's, highlights the changing landscape of the music industry and the value of catalogs.Taylor Swift is currently one of the biggest pop stars, with widespread popularity and a strong presence in the industry.Support the show

In the 1990's, Manhattan's booming dance club scene was hit by two massive trends: Ecstasy and Techno. With the eye-patch wearing Canadian nightlife impresario Peter Gatien standing watch, massive clubs like limelight and Sound Factory became debaucherous drug dens ruled over by the ever-weirder club kids. Soon enough, though, a techno pioneer who would later go on to be involved with Wu Tang Clan saw the potential for massive profits and brought in roughneck junior mafia farm teams from south Brooklyn and Staten Island and things starting getting dark, quick. An infamous tabloid murder, a massive mafia bust and a lurid drug kingpin trial followed, but not before some of the major players relocated to Miami for a bit and made a name for themselves there. Once some former associates started talking, however, it all came crashing down, not just for Chris Paciello, but for the top level five family bosses he testified against. In episode 21, Shannon begins to bring her experiences with the nightlife and music community back home to NYC. With the pandemic causing a major disruption to nightlife venues and cultural spaces, Shannon has a chat with a few members of the community who are looking to keep the city’s music scene alive. For the first half of the show, we hear from Ric Leichtung and Diana Mora who are spearheading NYC Nightlife United, which is an emergency fund aimed at providing financial relief to venues and cultural spaces that have been deeply devastated by the pandemic. The organization is comprised of various nightlife figures and cultural institutions including Ric and Diana who have both spent years cultivating and creating events and community spaces in NYC. Ric Leichtung is the founder of concert promotion and publication AdHoc and Diana Mora owns Friends and Lovers in Brooklyn. While there has been some relief efforts for businesses and workers through The Cares Act which claims to provide fast and direct economic assistance, the process has been rather slow and complicated. Ric and Diana talk about some of the challenges that nightlife venues in NYC currently face with PPP which is the Payroll Protection Program and the difficulty of receiving business loans to cover some of the major losses experienced during this time. For the second half of the show Shannon chats with Bowen Goh, who runs Mood Ring in Bushwick, Brooklyn alongside his partner Vanessa Li. It’s a little gem tucked away on Myrtle Ave, which has become a vital space for Brooklyn's LGBTQ, creative and music scene. Bowen fills us in on the history behind the venue and the struggles that lie ahead for both Mood Ring and his newly formed sister venue Heaven Or Las Vegas which just opened up this past February.
