If anything can bind together nearly 400 pupils and 100 school staff in challenging circumstances, it's love. And love is in plentiful supply at Parklands. The pupils at Parklands Primary School, located on the Seacroft estate in Leeds, often face significant hardship. Children start at the school significantly behind their peers nationally, especially in terms of their language and literacy. Yet the school is famed for outstanding learning – both in terms of Ofsted judgement and, more importantly, in achieving amazing outcomes for its learners. In this inspiring book, head teacher Chris Dyson shares the story of how he has steered the school towards the seemingly impossible educational dream of high achievement, personalised support and complete inclusion. He explains how the school setting can be a place where there is love but also hope and relentless ambition for children, and reflects on the steps that he and his staff have put in place to make this a reality for Parklands' pupils. Chris delves into how this culture and climate of love drives behaviour and decision-making throughout the school – and, as a result, how this creates a safe, loving environment in which all of its learners can thrive. Chris also provides insights into how the leadership team goes about raising funds for the school, and how they choose to spend it on both curricular and extracurricular projects. And, furthermore, how the school broadens its pupils' experiences and cultural capital by means of residential trips, in-school productions, and sports and arts provision. An uplifting read for all teachers and school leaders. Chapters include: Chapter 1: Love Chapter 2: Leadership Chapter 3: Learning Chapter 4: Fun Day Friday and the Best Seats in the House Chapter 5 Looking After Your Staff Chapter 6 Achievement Chapter 7 Parents, Community and Family Chapter 8 Taking Care of Business Naylor's Natter- the book: Inspired by interviews from the popular education podcast of the same name, Naylor's Natter brings together a wealth of advice from the most influential voices in education today. In this exciting, one-of-a-kind book, Phil Naylor revisits the very best interviews from four years of education podcasting, drawing on the advice and opinions from some of the world's most innovative educators, including Doug Lemov, E. D. Hirsch, Pritesh Raichura and Mary Myatt. Divided into five key areas – behaviour, leadership, pastoral care, CPD, and the future of teaching and learning – this book is perfect for primary and secondary ECTs, teachers and school leaders looking for new takes on hot topics, as well as tips and strategies to improve their practice. There are QR codes throughout linking to the episodes discussed, so you can listen to the interviews and explore the topics in even more detail. Full of valuable insights into the current state of education, and what the road ahead may look like, this is an indispensable tool for starting conversations and transforming the way you teach.

Chris believes that If anything can bind together nearly 400 pupils and 100 school staff in challenging circumstances, it's love. And love is in plentiful supply at Parklands. Chris was brought up in a single-parent household and received free school clothes and free school meals himself as a child, which has meant that the connection between his early life and that of Parklands' pupils is built on understanding. He believes that education is the key to making the future brighter, and he is fuelled by a desire to provide his pupils with the best education and opportunities possible. Chris has recently written a book - Parklands, A School Built On Love - in which he recounts the story of how he  steered the school towards the seemingly impossible educational dream of high achievement, personalised support and complete inclusion. Asbestos fibres are leaching into Christchurch's drinking water supply from ageing underground pipes, according to a University of Otago study. While the researchers say there is no immediate cause for public health concern, the discovery has prompted calls for better monitoring of asbestos in drinking water to help councils prioritise which pipes to replace. The researchers sent drinking water samples from asbestos cement pipes in 35 places across the city, targeting those laid between the 1930s and 1960s, for analysis at a specialist laboratory in the United States. Asbestos fibres were identified in all 20 samples taken from fire hydrants, which draw from the mains supply, and in samples from three out of 15 household taps. Higher levels of asbestos were found in suburbs that suffered liquefaction in the Christchurch earthquakes. One of the study's authors, Dr Sarah Mager, said the long fibre concentrations were below United States guidelines, which was the only country with a regulatory threshold for asbestos in drinking water. "Asbestos in drinking water sounds really scary. "The World Health Organisation has ruled that it is not of concern. My concern is we simply haven't been monitoring it for any length of time to really be sure. "Asbestosis has a really long latency as well, so we may not know for a long time if it's of health concern." Mager said epidemiological links between asbestos fibres in drinking water and cancers could only be established if data existed, but it was not regularly collected. "We cannot continue to rely on asbestos cement piping that was laid in the 1930s and 1940s, or even as late as the 1960s, and still expect that to have sufficient integrity to ensure clean, safe drinking water." Christchurch has an 1814km underground water mains network, 789km of which is laid in asbestos cement piping. Water pipes were commonly made from asbestos cement because metal was vulnerable to corrosion. Another of the study's authors, Michael Knopick, said asbestos cement piping had a lifespan of between 40 and 60 years. "Asbestos piping that's been in the ground longer than 50 years can degrade and release fibres from its walls. It's been described at this point as having the characteristics of wet cardboard." Knopick said Christchurch's high purity water was corroding the pipes, which were also brittle and damaged in the earthquakes. "We found that particularly in areas where there had been moderate to severe road liquefaction that our results were significantly higher. It was quite clear that liquefaction and earthquake damage had resulted in a bit of accelerated decay." The oldest pipes pre-date 1950 and lie under small pockets of New Brighton, Hei Hei, Mt Pleasant and Halswell. More pipes were laid in Hei Hei, Riccarton, Aranui, Halswell, Ilam, Burnside, Bishopdale, Redwood, Hornby, Parklands, Lyttelton, Phillipstown, Somerfield and Woolston between the 1950s and 1970s. Christchurch City Council's acting head of three waters Tim Drennan said people should not be alarmed by the study's findings. "The levels of asbestos found weincredibly low. Although the study focused on Christchurch, nearly every water supply network in New Zealand has some asbestos pipe work. "Internationally there is no consistent evidence to suggest that ingested asbestos is hazardous - a fact the authors of the study acknowledge." Drennan said 190km of piping had already been replaced and the council was progressively working through the rest, based on their condition. "Around 66 per cent of breakages in the past 12 months have been asbestos pipes, which means that the asbestos pipes have been prioritised for replacement over the coming years anyway, just due to their condition. "Between now and 2045 the vast majority will be fully replaced." New Zealand has 9000km of asbestos piping...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stage 4: Maturation Irish Whiskey/Uisce Beatha Eireannach /Irish Whisky” must be matured in wooden casks, such as oak, only on the island of Ireland, such maturation being for a minimum of three years. New casks as well as casks which may have been previously used to store other alcoholic beverages, for example Madeira, Sherry, Port or Bourbon, are used. The moderate Irish climate influences the rate of maturation and enables the development of particular flavour attributes. This even maturation creates a smooth tasting and mellow product. The use of seasoned casks means that the spirit is not overpowered by excessive wood extracts and tannins but delivers a complex but balanced character to the spirit and enables the development of particular flavour attributes. Colour development, which varies in colour from pale gold to dark amber, depends upon the maturation casks chosen. ”Irish Whiskey/Uisce Beatha Eireannach /Irish Whisky” shall not be exported from Ireland in wooden casks, such as oak or other wooden containers, which may result in further maturation. Linda and Rodney describe the gross power imbalance in this process, and how the community has come together nevertheless to stave off the developments.   Campaign link: https://www.scaleitdown.org/

Sylvania Township trustees have agreed to partner with a group of who have voiced their opposition to the apparent intent of the City of Sylvania to annex several homes in residential subdivisions currently in the township.Residents have appeared at meetings of the trustees as well as city council recently complaining about what they have characterized as a “money grab” by the city. They have said they are very satisfied with government services in the township and do not want to become liable for the 1.5 percent income tax imposed by the city. The resolution by the township placed a cap of $20,000 on its efforts in conjunction with the citizens’ group. It came after a discussion following a motion by trustee John Jennewine that an attorney be hired, with that amount as an upper limit, to explore actions which could be taken by the township in opposition to any annexation efforts by the city.John Crandall, chairman of the trustees, said there wouldn’t be an issue if residents of an area actively sought to be annexed, but that the trustees strongly oppose the forced annexation which seems underway. Some property owners said they signed agreements to be annexed some time ago, because it was required in order to get water service to their homes. The issue erupted after the city sent letters to some 100 property owners directing them to sign an annexation petition by Nov. 30. City officials contend those properties have annexation agreements with the city. A number of people have challenged whether there is such an enforceable agreement. The township sent a letter to about 400 residents who may be directly effected by the city’s apparent intentions saying they oppose the action and more recently issued a letter meant more generally to all township residents explaining, their opposition. Both letters noted that the recently completed annexation of the Mayberry subdivision cost the township about $50,000 in revenue.Trustee Neal Mahoney noted that the loss of the residential subdivisions, apparently targeted by the city, would deal a more significant loss to the township. It could be, he said, that if the city’s annexation efforts are successful the township may be forced to request additional levy support in order to maintain the current level of service to residents.“This issue effects all township residents,” he said.Subdivisions identified as annexation targets are The Meadows, Parklands, County Walk, Sylvan Hills, Copperwood and Country Walk Circle.(credit Mike Jones on sylvaniatownship.com)

The Parklands of Floyds Fork is 4,000 acres of undeveloped land in southeast Louisville. It’s one of the last undeveloped regions of Louisville, and it’s home to mammals, aquatic animals, and plants — some of which aren’t found anywhere else in the world. It centers around a 62-mile long waterway called Floyds Fork. A new subdivision is in the works for the area, and conservationists are worried that the additional runoff and wastewater from homes and apartments would cause the collapse of the stream’s ecosystem. WFPL’s environment reporter Ryan Van Velzer joins us on today’s Recut to explain how the development could affect the stream. The developers and the conservationists each have their own positions; Ryan tells us what the data shows. And the whole issue brings up a kind of cognitive dissonance: a place is beautiful, so we love it and want to live there, but in order to live there, we have to take away some of what makes it beautiful (or possibly even destroy it altogether). Near the end of today’s show, things get a little far afield (pun intended) as Ryan takes us inside the mind of an environment reporter. “I knew car exhaust was bad for me,” he said. “But now I know the mechanism in which it’s bad for me.” And after today’s show, we do, too (thanks a lot, Ryan).

The presentation is based on my own experience as an artist/practitioner and the experience gained as Director/curator of Sculpture in the Parklands working with both Irish and international artists who have created new artworks that respond to the rich environmental, archaeological and industrial history of Lough Boora, County Offaly. For over 25 years my artwork has explored the subtleties of ritual and imagination. I create artefacts that often combine the textured surfaces and flowing lines of our past with the strong and austere forms of modern architecture. The ultimate goal is to create a work of art that is timeless, thought provoking and responsive to the human spirit. As Director and curator of Sculpture in the Parklands I have been an observer of artistic practice as opposed to directly involved in it. The sculpture park is located in a cut away bog that has been brought back to life over the past ten years through the introduction of lakes and wetland habitats. The sculpture project has added another layer of engagement for visitors to the area by combining visual and conceptual interpretations of geography, landscape, the industrial history of peat harvesting and the people who had lived and worked there. Besides permanent or time based work, the project has a commitment to commissioning video artists, composers, writers and performance artists to interpret and document this unique landscape, archaeology and industrial history.
