One year ago they moved to the mountains of Franklin, NC, a very small rural town at the base of Smokey Mountain National Park, and is about to open his second FFS startup practice. Ten months ago, he sold his first startup dental practice, also FFS, after owning it for 11 years, with no commitment to return to dentistry. He has spent the last year evaluating many business opportunities but found that that dentistry is truly the best business one can own, and he will be launching his new startup practice in the next week. He believes that you don't have to accept the current situation you are in, and that dentists are so blessed because we have so many options to reinvent our careers and rewrite our own stories. It just takes the guts to step out and make the changes. As a little boy from New Jersey, he always wanted to be an airline pilot. He and his family moved to Tampa FL in his high school years. He started working in a dental office at age 18, starting with fetching his bosses' (and soon to become mentor's) coffee, washing his car, cleaning out the attic, assisting chairside, filling in at the front desk, and eventually carving teeth out of soap. Dentistry was interesting, but not as much as aviation. He then went to Clearwater Christian College graduating with a BS in Pre-Medicine. However, undergrad education and the progression to dental school, was just a back up plan. While in college he earned his pilot's license moving one step closer to his airline pilot dream. But then, everything changed. While in college, his mother received a cancer diagnosis, and passed away 6 short weeks later. There were some amazing nurses and doctors who displayed a high level of compassion and caring, and this left a big impact. He decided to turn his goal towards dentistry so that he could impact others in a manner similar to the cancer doctors. He applied to one school, and in 2007 received his DMD degree from the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Immediately after school, he went back to work for his mentor, Dr Jeff Weihe, who taught him advanced CEREC applications and that a FFS practice is a practice model worth emulating. The financial crisis hit, and Dr. Belof eventually found himself working for a large corporation- the complete opposite of a FFS practice. Needless to say, this was a poor fit and one of 3 three major career moments that motivated a big change. The only way forward was ownership. And it had to be a startup. Most thought a FFS startup was too risky, but it was a risk with a big payoff. And it did payoff. In 2010, he opened the doors to South Bay Dentistry in Apollo Beach, FL. There is a long DentalTown thread documenting the entire journey. A few years later, he hit another major career moment. Instead of running the practice, the practice began running him, which under normal circumstances, he had capacity to deal with. But now, with his father being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, there was no margin left. Suddenly, a chaotic practice was too much to deal with. He was in the middle of a staff meeting with their brand new consultant, hearing about all the extra work tasks they were to undertake, and overload hit its boiling point. He made a commitment that from that day on, the schedule would be templated exactly to his ideal day, and not waver. This gave much needed margin in his life, and helped release him to give the emotional energy his father needed and deserved. The practice continued to grow, and he added an amazing associate. This allowed him to step back to 3 days per week. Production was up, overhead was low. On paper, everything was fantastic. But Florida wasn't where him and his wife wanted to be- they always yearned to live in the mountains. During the COVID shutdown, they had time and space to dream, and realized that they could make a move to the mountains actually happen, with enough cushion to take some time off and evaluate business options. Also contributing, was a sense of burnout. They decided to make the leap, and the sell the practice, which seemed unwise to many. The moving timeline accelerated a bit when he broke both of his arms, forcing him to leave the chairside earlier than planned. For the past year, he has been enjoying time in the mountains, walking in the woods, building a chicken coop, and spending some time away from the rat race, while also evaluating other business opportunities. It turns out, an unusual dental opportunity was right in his back yard. A dental office in town has been sitting empty for the past 2 years, only requiring a little bit of love and dental equipment. The doors are set to open this week for Career 2.0, AKA Signature Dentistry of Franklin, a FFS startup with plans to be low overhead, high tech, high touch, in a town that is dentally underserved. The FFS aspect will help fund the Heroes program, which is meant to act almost as a second practice within the practice, that donates dentistry to local community heroes who have demonstrated selfless service to the community. Dr. Belof's core values for his dental office are gratitude, kindness, excellence, hospitality, positivity, and difference making. These values and a renewed sense of WHY are the driving force for Signature Dentistry. About Dr. Sonny Spera Dr. Sonny Spera graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1981. With a four-year basketball scholarship he graduated from Syracuse University in 1985; majoring in Chemistry and Psychology. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. This episode was recorded in Spring 2022. In this episode, Kamryn Yanchick talks to Indigenous student organizers about the process of participating in tribal elections, Indigenous social structures, and the importance of young people's participation in youth councils. They discuss the intimidation factor of speaking to elder councils, honoring tradition, and existing in a social paradigm that doesn't always feel responsive to young people and student voices. How can activity in tribal government differ from a sense of obligation towards non-tribal elections? What trends and forces can be leveraged to encourage greater participation in tribal elections? Students discuss motivations, celebrations, and struggles. Marquita Brown is a native of Petersburg, VA. She holds a bachelor's degree in African American Studies and is a Licensed Practical Nurse. She is also an entrepreneur, mentor, philanthropist, and community advocate who believes in social justice. She also believes in equality in healthcare and educating African Americans about their health and informing them about the importance of making healthy decisions. Marquita is the owner of Apple for The Day, a health education and health consultation business. It's focus is on the health of all people, but is mostly concentrated on African American health. The point of receiving these services is to make sure people have a basic knowledge on their condition. The name came about from the phrase “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. Marquita wanted to provide knowledge on health, and instead of having someone retrieve "an apple a day", she wanted to give them "an apple for the day". She shares that God gave her this vision. She began her business as a child. She started by wanting to be a physician, and worked diligently from that time to attain her goal. As a teenager she began as a hospital volunteer. From there she volunteered at her pediatrician's office. That opportunity allowed her to come into the examination room with the doctor and watch as he examined patients from time to time. In high school she was a part of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and studied her first Black History course. After graduating high school, Marquita majored in Biology and concentrated in Pre-Medicine, and was eventually offered the chance to intern in a private practice. That experience changed her life. Marquita has a genuine love for the African American community. She is aware of the need to bring about a change to a group of people without a voice. She is on a mission to eradicate racism from the healthcare practice. She shares that without racism, health disparities would not exist. African Americans receive the least amount of healthcare and tend to only go to the hospital or doctor when it effects their work. By that time, it may already be too late. Dr. Liz's Chiropractic Story: Dr. Liz was introduced to chiropractic care when she was at her lowest point health-wise. As a young person she was plagued with chronic allergies and sinus infections. Being in contact with her grandparents' cats would send Liz to the hospital and put on breathing treatments. This was devastating for Liz because she loves animals so much. She often had asthma attacks and had to be put on many medications. In college, her sinus problems came to a head and fear kicked in as her appetite disappeared, she was missing class due to excruciating "migraine-like" headaches, and she had no energy or zest for life. She was tired of being told it was another sinus infection and being put on more antibiotics that were destroying her immune system. At a college career fair she met a local chiropractor and the rest is history. Through a chiropractic examination and x-rays, the cause of Dr. Liz's health problems was found in her cervical spine-she had numerous chronic subluxations that kept her from being able to function and heal at 100% capacity. Chiropractic changed her life that year, helped her get off numerous prescribed and over the counter drugs, and inspired her to change her undergraduate focus to include Pre Medicine so she could enter Chiropractic school.

The Social Network Show welcomes our co-host, Michelle Boykins, Senior Director of Communications at the National Crime Prevention Council and her guest Keli Wilson of AlertID, to the November 21, 2014 episode. Keli Wilson, the co-founder of AlertID, a "Neighborhood Watch" App that is free to you on your smartphone or tablet, shares why she started this organization and the following: What AlertID is and how to sign up The partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council and McGruff's App How the App recognizes sex offenders in the neighborhood Tips on being safe during the holidays The upcoming expansion of AlertID How it works when you are away from home Keli Wilson is the co-founder of AlertID and mother of three. While vacationing with friends and family in California, Keli was separated from her three children during a visit to an amusement park. Thankfully, they were reunited later, but it was the longest 45-minutes of Keli's life. As a result of that experience, Keli conceived the idea for AlertID. Her mission was to develop a tool that would help protect families and communities by creating a communication system that would allow users to communicate with public safety officials during an emergency and for authorities to communicate with the residents in the communities in which they serve. AlertID was launched in January 2011. By partnering with local law enforcement agencies, AlertID is able to provide threat alerts and advisories to users about crime, sex offenders, missing children, natural disasters and severe weather. Alerts and advisories are available on web, mobile and tablet applications as well as through emails and texts. In an effort to help protect families and our community, AlertID is free to the public and to all law enforcement agencies. Keli holds a dual bachelor's degree in Pre-Medicine and Biology from the University of Nevada. For the past eight years, Keli and her husband have been involved in numerous humanitarian projects. Much of their efforts have involved assisting homeless children, families and sponsoring children in the United States and the Philippines.
