One of the great underappreciated singer-songwriters of the rock era was Tulsa, Oklahoma native Claude Russell Bridges, better known as Leon Russell. Russell was a musician and songwriter with records spanning rock, folk, country, gospel, bluegrass, and blues who began playing piano at the age of four. He went to the same high school as David Gates (from Bread), and the two collaborated as a group called The Fencemen early on. Russell went to Los Angeles and worked as a studio musician. The list of folks he worked with is huge, including Jan and Dean, the Beach Boys, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, the Byrds, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. He was a big part of the group Delaney and Bonnie, and was a primary inspiration to a then-upcoming pianist who went by the name Elton John.Russell was born with cerebral palsy, which produced some paralysis on his right side. He walked with a limp, and he was bullied as a kid over it. He also developed a piano playing style that favored his left hand, and keyboardists will recognize that as unusual since the right hand typically plays the melody on songs. We are looking at the third solo studio album from Leon Russell called Carney. This is Russell's most successful album in the United States, and comes when he was at his height as both a musician and a performer. It went to number 2 on the Billboard Album chart. Carney is organized with a first side that tends toward folk or roots rock, and a side two that is more psychedelic. Russell was quite the start at this time, and he found that fame had some downsides. Carney contains observations about the rock star lifestyle, and compares it two the performers at a carnival midway. Russell's fame as a solo performer would fall off about three years after this album when he would trend in a more country direction. He remained a force in the studio and as a songwriter throughout his life. Leon Russell passed in his sleep in 2016 at home while recovering from heart surgery.Bruce presents this icon of the singer-songwriter era in today's podcast, as previous host Brian Dickhute sits in this week in Lynch's absence. Manhattan Island SerenadeWe're leading off with a deeper cut from the album. It's lyrics are told from the perspective of a guy broken down on the side of the road, thinking about a long lost love as the rain falls and the cars drive by.TightropeThis is the big hit off the album. It went to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song encapsulates the theme of the album well, comparing the rock performer to a tightrope walker, with all the risks and the joys of performing stunts in front of the crowd. If the Shoe FitsRussell takes on the groupies and hangers-on in this song. It's a little like Pink Floyd's “Have a Cigar,” but instead of focusing on managers taking advantage of the band, this song looks at the parasitical elements of the press and the fans. It maintains a light, satirical feel despite the pessimism embedded in the lyrics. This MasqueradeWhile never a hit for Russell, this song received some airplay as the B-side to “Tightrope.” It would also be covered by a number of artists including Helen Reddy and the Carpenters, but it's most successful cover iteration would be from George Benson on this “Breezin'” album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dueling Banjos (from the motion picture Deliverance)Burt Reynolds stars in this action/horror film about a group of rafters who encounter strange back woods locals while rafting in Georgia. STAFF PICKS:I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny NashWayne gets us rolling on the staff picks with an optimistic song which went to number 1 in 1972. The inspiration was an eye surgery that Nash had undergone which left him temporarily blind. The song reflects the hope and joy when he was able to see again, and inspires hope during times of adversity. You Don't Mess Around with Jim by Jim CroceRob brings us one of Croce's signature lyrical stories. Jim Walker was the baddest pool hustler around until Slim showed up at the pool hall and cut Jim to ribbons in a fight. “You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask of the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.” Too Late to Turn Back Now by the Cornelius Brothers & Sister RoseBrian features a family soul singing group out of Florida formed in the 60's as a gospel group before adding Sister Rose in 1970. Carter, Eddie and Rose Cornelius released this single as a follow-up to their hit “Treat Her Like a Lady.” The follow-up was even more successful than the former hit, going to number 2 in the Billboard Hot 100, while the previous hit went to number 3. I Wanna Be Where You Are by Michael JacksonBruce's staff pick is the third single off MJ's debut solo album. It went to number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Leon Ware and Arthur “T-Boy” Ross wrote this song, and Arthur Ross is the brother of Diana Ross. Michael Jackson was producing solo work while continuing as a member of the Jackson 5, and his brothers are singing backup on this song. Dave and Milt take listeners on a nostalgic journey through the Billboard Top 10 hits from July 3, 1971. The duo discusses and critiques songs like Ringo Starr's 'It Don't Come Easy', The Rolling Stones' classic ‘Brown Sugar', and The Carpenters' 'Rainy Days and Mondays', while also spotlighting tracks by Jerry Reed, James Taylor, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose, The Raiders, and Carole King. Amidst playful banter, Milt's love-hate relationship with certain tracks and Dave's critique of James Taylor's style surface. By the way, a robot wrote this recap. Could you tell? I bet you couldn't. The robots are winning. Kneel before us, humans. You have no chance. Anyway, the episode teems with humorous anecdotes, fascinating trivia—including John Loudermilk's fabricated story—an AI-generated musical playdate, and even a song substitution challenge featuring The James Gang. On this Episode I speak to one of Irish America's greatest and most respected writers; Peter Quinn. Peter is a Novelist, Political Historian, and Foremost Chronicler of New York City. Peter was hired in 1979 by Governor Hugh Carey as his chief speechwriter. He continued in that role under Governor Mario Cuomo, helping craft the Governor's 1984 Democratic Convention speech and his address on religion and politics at Notre Dame University. Peter was also chief speechwriter for Time, as well as editorial director for Time Warner, and found an avocation in writing about his Irish heritage. In his first novel, Banished Children of Eve, he explores the after-effects of the vast Irish immigration into New York City following the famine of 1847. Banished Children of Eve won an American Book Award.Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America, a collection of non-fiction pieces, was published in 2007. Colum McCann has summed up Quinn's trilogy of historical detective novels -- Hour of the Cat(2005), The Man Who Never Returned (2010), and Dry Bones (2013) –have been described as "generous and agile and profound." Quinn co-wrote the script for the 1987 television documentary "McSorley's New York," which was awarded a New York-area Emmy for "Outstanding Historical Programming." He has participated as a guest commentator in several PBS documentaries, including The Irish in America; New York: A Documentary Film; The Life and Times of Stephen Foster, as well as the Academy Award-nominated film, The Passion of Sister Rose. He was also an advisor on Martin Scorsese's film Gangs of New York.Peter's knowledge of Irish America is unparalleled and his recent memoir “Cross Bronx” is a one-of-a-kind account of his adventures as ad man, archivist, teacher, Wall Street messenger, court officer, political speechwriter, corporate scribe, and award-winning novelist. Quinn is a New Yorker through and through and it was a great honor to have him as a guest on the Podcast. www.newyorkpaddy.com

With the Apollo space program winding down, things had really started moving fast in 1972. We were still quite young and often pleaded with our fathers, “Daddy, don't you walk so fast; what are you some kind of rocket man?”. Perhaps you had gone a ways and suddenly realized you had forgotten to use the restroom before you left home. Our fathers would just smile and say “It's too late to turn back now, but I know a place we can go, I'll take you there”. To you, your mom was a superwoman and yet she would gently remind you that it was summer time, schools out, so let's just take it easy. She would say “it's ok to lean on me”, but then remind you to be strong and always hold your head up. Then there were those other kid's parents. Their moms were more liberated, they drank brandy, and the kids would say “There goes motorcycle momma” as she road by on the back of a Harley, with her old man who looked like some sort of troglodyte cave man conquistador. Those poor kids a lot of the time came home to an empty house and found themselves alone again, naturally asking, “Where is the love?”. In this episode we say how do you do to the Billboard chart of July 15th 1972. Day by day we are getting a lot better at this. Hi, this is Sandy, thanks for joining me for this week's episode. I'm so excited to be able to introduce you to three terrific musical guests. Grammy Award-winning music legend CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE is renowned worldwide as a master harmonica player, a seasoned, truth-telling vocalist and an original songwriter rooted deep in the blues tradition. He's won 14 Blues Music Awards, been nominated for six Grammys, and received multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards. With a new album out now, I caught up with Charlie in Clarksdale Mississippi and discovered a humble, down to earth and extremely talented gentleman. They were a family band from Florida; siblings Carter, Eddie, Rose and Billie Jo Cornelius and were the toast of the town in 1972 with a song that climbed the charts right around the world. The CORNELIUS BROTHERS AND SISTER ROSE imploded though after they tasted success. Rose shares their story with us this week. Who could forget British band, THE FOUNDATIONS? Their smash hit, 'Build Me Up Buttercup' took the world by storm and remains a firm favourite for many people the world over. This is part 7 of 8 in our Church Offices series! We are talking about the office of the elder and what it means to be an elder. We learn many Churches define elder and pastor the same, some Churches ordain elders while others do not, some believe elder is its own position, and others believe these are simply men and women we respect in the Word. How we define this office and understand how others define elders could bring huge implications for Church unity. Is a Church board the same as a plurality of elders? Can elders fill in for the pastor? Should we use this term at all? . This episode includes interviews with Dr Russell Moore of Christianity Today, Rev Steve Lanclos of the Anglican tradition, Pastor Will Rose of the Lutheran tradition, Pastor Gary Adkins of the Pentecostal tradition, Rev Keno Cannady of the AME Zion Church, Joe Dea of the home church and host of Buddy Walk with Jesus, Professor Chris Moreland of the Catholic tradition, Sister Rose of the Catholic tradition, Kelly O'Sullivan of the Anglican Church, and Father Jonathan Resmini of the Orthodox tradition. . We even ask what leadership positions are available to women in the Churches that do ordain female ministers to an official office. . Professor Chris Moreland and Sister Rose join us again, this time to talk about the Catholic Church's view on Mother Mary and women leadership. Should women be able to preach / give the homily? Should women be able to hold the position of deaconess in the Church? In what ways are women leaders already keeping the Church running? Franciscan Spirituality Center920 Market StreetLa Crosse, WI 54601608-791-5295https://www.fscenter.orgSteve Spilde: Today, it is my honor to welcome as my guest Sister Rose Elsbernd. Rose is a teammate, a mentor, and a friend. She serves as a Spiritual Director at the Franciscan Spirituality Center, and is a longtime supervisor in the Spiritual Direction Preparation Program. Recently, five FSPA sisters and staff traveled to volunteer at a facility on the border in Arizona. Rose joins me to talk about her trip and her efforts to respond with compassion to those seeking asylum. Welcome, Rose.Sister Rose Elsbernd: Thank you, Steve. It's good to be with you today.Steve: You recently came back from a trip to Arizona. Could you tell us where you went?Sister Rose Elsbernd: We went to, as a response to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, had put out an asking for volunteers for people to work at the borders, partly because they were really in a need for volunteers. Many of the people who were helping during the winter were gone, and the students weren't yet back from college. As most of these facilities depend almost – I would say 95 percent – on volunteers, there was a need for us to go down. We Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration wanted to respond to that, and there was a number of us that just volunteered to go. Only four of us could go with our Justice and Peace person, Pat Bruda, who has gone a couple other times. We went to Tucson with the intention of coming to a knowledge of what's going on, because there's so much that you don't know, and you almost have to sort through the facts to know what it is. We were in Tucson. We did visit the border at two different places, and [we] went into Mexico twice. But mostly, we volunteered at Casa Alitas, which is a Catholic Charities-sponsored program that receives people from the border crossings, basically, either from Nogales or Yuma, and they have the paperwork. They have a file that's maybe an inch-and-a-half that they carry with them. At this point, they're legal to come into the United States. What they do as they come into this Casa Alitas is immediately they get water, they get some soup for nourishment, and then they begin to make them feel comfortable enough, and they stay maybe one or two days until they can get transportation out to where their sponsor is. If they can't find a sponsor, they start looking for one. There's a lot of navigation that they have to do to get them on the road and out, but most of the time it's a day or two. However, that's very different from on the Mexico side. They might have been waiting on the Mexican side for a year, year and a half, or even two [years], to get the papers for asylum that they need. It's kind of an interesting phenomena of how people are so desperate to get to a better life.Steve: So you went to this facility that serves as kind of a welcome for immigrants. These are legal immigrants [and] they have paperwork, but they've come to the border waiting to get in. They were waiting for a year or two on the Mexican side, and then they come in. But many of these immigrants really don't have anything as they arrive, correct?Sister Rose Elsbernd: No. What they get, of course, while they're there, they will get products they need for just hygiene, and then they get a backpack. Maybe they get a pair of shoes if they need it, [and] definitely shoelaces, because all the shoelaces are taken out of the shoes in Mexico – even the children's which is kind of like … They say it's for their safety, primarily, so they can't run. They get shoes, socks, a couple pair of underwear, two shirts, and usually one pair of jeans or something like that. That's what they carry onto the bus or the airplane as they leave.Steve: So they've come into this country [and] they're going to go to some … They might go to La Crosse if there's an organization willing to sponsor them. But basically, what they have as possessions is what's in that backpack.

Rebroadcast of the long-running radio program, The Ave Maria Hour," a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org Rose Hawthorne was born on May 20, 1851, in Lenox, Massachusetts, to American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia. Rose married author George Parsons Lathrop in 1871. In 1876, they had a son, Francis, who lived only until the age of 5. The couple eventually separated. George Lathrop died in 1898. Rose’s search for meaning in life inspired her extensive charity work. The death of a dear friend from cancer moved Rose to work with people with incurable illnesses. In the summer of 1896, she trained as a nurse at the New York Cancer Hospital, the first institution in the United States to provide training in treating cancer while general hospitals in the city did not admit patients with cancer. Later that year, she founded a charitable organization named after Saint Rose of Lima, Sister Rose's Free Home, to care for impoverished cancer patients. In 1900, she founded a new religious order, the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer. Rose became its first Mother Superior, taking the name Mother Mary Alphonsa. The order, now known as the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, opened a facility called St. Rose's Home on Water Street in Manhattan. The facility was later moved north of New York City to what is now Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne. Mother Mary Alphonsa died in her sleep on July 9, 1926. She was buried on the grounds of the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters in Hawthorne, N.Y. In 2003, Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop of New York, approved the movement for her canonization. Mother Mary Alphonsa now has the title "Servant of God" in the Catholic Church.

Though BLACKKKLANSMAN is, like MALCOLM X, drawn from real life, Spike Lee’s newest film takes more liberties in telling its ostensibly true story (something that’s drawn criticism from some corners). And also like MALCOLM X, it’s a film set in the past that’s commenting, often directly, on the present. Together the two films give us a lot to talk about, from their respective uses of speechmaking and divided identities, to their perspectives on white allies. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar.
