We're thrilled Devindra could step over from Engadget and Slashfilm to talk to us about Utopia, Gillian Flynn's reimagining of a belovedly culty UK original. Sarah was less thrilled by the show itself, which she's probably bailing on after only two episodes, but the rest of the panel had good things to say about the story, the acting (especially John Cusack), and how fundamentally weird it is that Amazon chose to release Utopia anyway during All Of This. After a trip Around The Dial with Enola Holmes, Julie And The Phantoms, The Legend Of Korra, 30 For 30's new Oscar Pistorius deep-dive, and Dave's long-awaited Cobra Kai review, we took the correct train to Coney Island for Whitney's Canon presentation on the Mr. Robot pilot. Christine Baranski won, tight pants lost, and Game Time put a song in our hearts. Put down those raisins and cue up an all-new Extra Hot Great! GUESTS

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host and extremely anxious new father for the duration of this episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I'm writing this late at night and probably recording it during the daytime depending on whether or not I'm stage whispering or speaking at a more comfortable easy volume. Thank you for listening. In addition to clips I've got other special content for you. I've received submissions, ladies and otherwise, and I couldn't be happier about that…but you may not be able to tell through my stage whisper or perhaps I'll be at a comfortable volume and that joke won't land the right way. (Maybe I won't read this line and it will still be on the blog at www.succotashshow.com as an Easter egg…) Well, I HAVE to read it NOW… ANYWAY Let me take you on a journey through our menu of items tonight: We've got a DOUBLE dose of raging moderate Will Durst's Burst O' Durst segment. We've got another reading from our wonderful FAKE SPONSOR TrumPoetry.com which is a one hundred percent REAL WEBSITE that I'm sure will be linked somewhere here because it's awesome! It's a brilliant and eloquent achievement of what poetry created by our producer Joe Paulino, and is supposed to do for people who read it…and write it…when times are uncertain…or more certain…or less certain… It's supposed to put that in perspective. And, occasionally, it's supposed to remind us that two plus two is indeed four even if some folks want you to not only believe but state openly that it is five. That's what I suppose... but I am no expert. I'm going to list the clips purely for presentation order here and then I'll explain a couple things after that, presumably. I've got clips from: Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited, The Rad Dudecast, The Slashfilmcast, Not A Huge Fan, and Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson. Okay so, I've been using the Laughable app a lot lately because I really don't have as much time to hunt for sounds around the internet as I used to and it makes it easier for me to find the specific content that I look for…which, in this case, is comedy soundcasts. It has Featured Comedians of The Day and, if I search for a specific comedian it will show me a list of podcasts that that comedian is associated with in some fashion. i.e. Host? Guest? ...Producer? Spokesmodel? ... anyway, it's a useful tool. Three of the soundcasts you will hear clips from tonight were found with the help of the Laughable app. Two of our clip segments feature those submissions I mentioned before and am very grateful for. Let me say a "Thank You" up here at the top of the show to Darren Staley and Dylan Brody of Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited and Charles Disney of Not A Huge Fan for their submitted contributions. I will explain more as we go… CLIPS Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson Our clip, from March 5th of this year, features outrageous comedian and actor Joey Diaz (The Longest Yard and The Degenerates on Netflix) stops by Tyson Ranch for this hilarious episode of Hotboxin' with Iron Mike and Big Eb. (Be sure to check out Joey Diaz' podcast The Church of What's Happening Now!) The /Filmcast (AKA The Slashfilmcast)The Slashfilmcast is the official podcast of Slashfilm.com. Hardcore geeks/bloggers/journalists David Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Jeff Cannata debate, pontificate, and delve into the latest films, film news, television shows, and entertainment-related items from the past week. Our clip is from Epi 511, The Matrix 20th Anniversary Retrospective, with guest David Sims, film critic from The Atlantic. (GUEST: David Sims from The Atlantic) The Rad Dudecast Our next clips is from Epi 220, "It's Racially Enhanced," of The Rad Dudecast, featuring New York standup comedians and best friends Anthony Devito, Brendan Eyre, and Greg Stone. Greg got a new character from Scotland, the boys break down how to podcast, and Brendan talks about his album recording. Not A Huge FanI'm not sure exactly which episode of Not A Huge Fan our next clip is from, as it was submitted directly to us from Charles Disney, a standup comedian and the host of the show. Here's the note he sent along with the clips: "Hello — Our podcast Not A Huge Fan is not categorized under Comedy, but I'm a standup comic and we have a number of comedian guests so sometimes it is funny. Attached is a clip from a popular episode from the end of last year. Thank you for supporting other podcasts! Sincerely, Charles" And thank YOU, Charles, for supporting this soundcast with your contribution. If you are a comedy soundcaster and would like to submit a clip to Succotash, we make it SO easy! Just get your 3-5 minute MP3 or WAV clip ready then upload it at http://hjightail.com/u/Succotash! Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch RevisitedRecently, myself and former-host-now-executive-producer Marc Hershon were guests on Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited, a "podcast about a podcast" as it calls itself. It's hosted by longtime podcast personalities Darren Staley and comedian Dylan Brody whose names would be familiar to longtime listeners to Succotash (as well as anyone who just heard me mention them in the introduction that I wrote after having written everything before this sentence up to the word "Recently"…) This is going to be kind of a "three-fer", with two clips submitted by Darren (aka @Crobama on Twitter) via our Hightail upload link. The first features part of a visit with comedian Craig Shoemaker, while the second has Darren chatting it up with Kelly Carlin. (Both of those worthies have been guests on Succotash, BTW — Shoe way back in Epi29 and Kelly way WAY in Epi9!) The third clip features me and Marc from a very recent episode of DBNCR. OUTRO And there it went! One more episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, in the archive at www.succotashshow.com . Where you can hear past episodes of the show featuring original-host-now-executive-producer Marc Hershon planting and tending to the crops that would grow to yirld this current and also aformentioned soundcast. For their contributions I'd like to again thank Darren Staley and Dylan Brody of Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited (or DBNCR as I will think of it from here on out.) And Charles Disney of Not A Huge Fan for taking time out of their day to send me content to help a fellow soundcaster out. It's a pretty big deal and I appreciate it. It's late and I must try to capture sleep when I can. I apologize if some of these recent episodes have been more than two weeks apart as was my original goal. My current goal is to have episodes for you that post two weeks apart when it works out that way... at any rate, I'll shoot for more often than not. I do enjoy making this program and I appreciate your kindness, patience and support. Thank you again for listening and, if I could, might I intrude upon your kindness the teensiest bit more and ask you to Please, Pass The Succotash? — Tyson Saner
Netflix had an outsized presence at the 2019 Oscars despite their unconventional way of distributing films.(image Courtesy of Vulture.com) The 2019 Oscars or Academy Awards were like no other. There was a Superhero film up for best picture and a Superhero film actually won for Best Animated Feature. Among top films to come away a winner this year was an Alfonso Curaón film named Roma. It scored an industry first in that despite the fact that it was available for viewers to stream on Netflix even as it was still playing in theatres, Roma was not only a serious contender for competitive awards like best director and best picture, it actually won three of the four awards it was nominated for. (Netflix developed Roma image Courtesy of Deadline.com) For this segment we've turned things on their heads a bit– Andy Sorciniis a film editor by trade, as well as the Creator and Executive Producer of The Drill Down. Tosin Onafowokan, longtime Drill Down co-panelist, is a product manager at Vudu, where he spends his days working on the tech behind the streaming media that audiences can't get enough of, and, here tonight as a special guest, we have Engadget Senior Editor Devindra Hardawar, who, in addition to writing about and being an expert in all things entertainment technology, is also the long-time co-host of the Slashfilmcast, which reviews and provides insights about the latest in film and television every week. Devindra has also launched his own technology show recently– the Know More Tech podcast, in which he answers every day users questions about technology. Examples include how to pick the best tech gifts, what you should be looking for in major technology purchases like televisions, and help whittling down the best products in a sea of options– like recommendations on fitness trackers. I thought we'd take advantage of this vast array of tech and movie experience to see if there's anything to be learned about where the industry is going in light Netflix's incursion into what had been a space dominated by the studios.
David, Devindra, Jeff and Kristy discuss highlights from Fantastic Fest, Jeremy Saulnier's latest, and the irreversible decision of listening to shows too quickly. This will be Kristy's last episode with the Slashfilmcast as a regular contributor, but do expect her in the future as an occasional guest. For the past 10 months, we've explored a theme that is pertinent to all artists. Let's sum this season up and get the definitive answer to this crucial question. If you're any kind of artist, but especially if you're one trying to earn a living at your craft, it's vital to both your creative fulfillment as well as your professional longevity, to find "your voice" and develop a signature style. On September 1 of last year, Radio Film School launched with a mission to get to the bottom of this answer. After almost 90 interviews, we have determined what I can safely proclaim is a definitive strategy. In our season 1 finale, we'll revisit old interviews, introduce new ones, and summarize what essentially amounts to a 4-stop process; and we do it in a way that is classic Radio Film School--from stories to movie clips to an eclectic score, you'll be inspired after hearing this episode.Be sure to listen past the credits to get a sneak peek at season 2 and the collaboration we're doing with Stillmotion and Muse Storytelling to document the making of their The Remarkable Ones series. This week we have a special bonus episode while we get ramped up editing new regular episodes. And this bonus is a doozy. It's an interview with Jeff Cannata. Jeff is an actor, husband, artist, cinephile, comedian and co-host of one of my favorite movie review podcasts, the Slashfilmcast. As is the case with all my interviews, I normally use bits and pieces as they relate to the topic of any particular episode. Every now and then I'll put up a full, uncut interview for your enjoyment. This is one such interview.During my conversation with Jeff, we talked about a veritable plethora to topics. we talked about his career; we talked about Bill Cosby and Woody Allen and the difficulty of appreciating art when the artist has done terrible things; we talk about story and the love of movies; we talk about finding your voice as an artist; and of course, we talk about living life "unsullied." This is an interview that will inspire and encourage you.Besides the Slashfilmcast, Jeff can also be found...On TwitterHis website"We Have Concerns"DLC
Since 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of Disney-Pixar's Toy Story, I thought it would be fun to do a special about animation. Actually, the truth is, one of my conversations with frequent show guest JD Cochran got off on a 45-minute tangent about South Park...so I used it as a basis for an episode. I also talk with Slashfilmcast co-host Jeff Cannata and wedding filmmaking master and USC film grad Kevin Shahinian about why Pixar is arguably the most successful studio in Hollywood.Support our SponsorClick here and use offer code radio for a one-time Standard Gold Level license worth $30.Music in this EpisodeThe opening pre-roll music is "Never Knew" by Dani Elliott courtesy of Song Freedom. Anderson, Coppola, and even as far back as Capra. But I was fascinated to see how often the topic came up in my own conversations with filmmakers and artists. In this official premiere episode, we look at the role that fathers play in cinema, and how being open to the vulnerability that comes with sharing those stories will elevate your craft.Who You HeardThis episode featured interviews with...Alex Vo - award-winning filmmaker in Silicon ValleyJeff Cannata - co-host of the Slashfilmcast & We Have ConcernsMarshall Jones - spoken word poet.
