It is a truth near-universally acknowledged (amongst pollsters at least) that Labour will be the largest party at the next election. But how would they actually differ from the Tories in terms of what they do once in power? They've pledged not to raise taxes and not to remove the recent cuts. They're determined to be fiscally responsible - which means little room for spending plans. So what will actually change - at a moment when the country is crying out for repair? We talk to Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting. And - Suella has returned from Israel and come to the LBC studios to share her thoughts on the Middle East and the shape of the Tory party. Does she represent a significant chunk of the country in what she thinks? We discuss. In her previous life as a corporate recruiter, Maisha Cannon put on what she describes as a kind of “mask.” She wasn't fully herself. Often, she'd fade into the background to try and get ahead as a black woman in corporate America. But for Maisha, getting into entrepreneurship meant putting aside those incidents where she experienced bias. It meant stepping into herself and building the confidence she needed to start The Collab Lab, which helps Talent Acquisition professionals and Recruiters to grow their skills and careers. In this episode, Maisha talks about how to bring your full self to work. How did she respond to experiencing racial bias in the workplace? How did she develop the confidence to start The Collab Lab, especially as an introvert? And what's the biggest trend affecting job recruitment right now?Maisha talks about:Getting hired at (and leaving) companies like Google and LinkedInEmbracing imperfection and the importance of launching earlyThe secrets to overcoming bias in the workplaceHow AI is being used to disrupt recruitingShedding her corporate "mask" We have a new website!Visit andsosheleft.com for full episodes, transcripts, an application form to be on the show, a list of upcoming guests and more.Hosted by Katherin Vasilopoulos. Today, she's the CEO and Co-Founder of Eirene, a funeral service provider that's disrupting the industry with their affordable prices and tech-driven approach. They're incredibly transparent with the families they serve, educating them while prioritizing their comfort to guide them through a simplified arrangements process. On this episode, Mallory answers questions like: how does she navigate being an outsider in the funeral industry? How do her views on mortality allow her to create strong bonds with customers? Alina Kravchenko has always loved inventing. Alina defines her entrepreneurial success based on one simple factor: how much creativity she's able to express as a founder. But being raised by a single mom in Ukraine and eventually becoming a single mom herself meant there was no shortage of people who looked down on them both. When she drained her 401K and secured a patent for SwipenSnap, her one-hand applicator for baby ointment, people laughed at her. Until the product landed Alina a spot on Shark Tank and propelled her to launch TonerBum, an ergonomic weight designed specifically for glute workouts. In this conversation, Alina answers questions like: why does she feel so driven to constantly create? How did she persist during times of immense stress as a single mom? And how can we determine our own versions of success as entrepreneurs? Alina talks about:Growing up in UkraineOvercoming immense self-doubtDefining success as a creative personEmbracing falls instead of giving in to failureWhy pursuing wealth will never make you happy How she created both SwipenSnap and TonerBum We have a new website!Visit andsosheleft.com for full episodes, transcripts, an application form to be on the show, a list of upcoming guests and more.Hosted by Katherin Vasilopoulos. Entrepreneurs are deep thinkers. We each have a million ideas zipping around in our heads, and if we're lucky, a great one pops up every now and again. But there's a stark difference between the people who dream and the people who do. Tiffany Jones-Lewis made that realization after serving 8 years in the navy. Before launching TJL Collection, a fashion brand aimed at tall women, she was a lifelong dreamer. The tallest one in the room from a young age, her height had always matched the loftiness of her professional goals…yet the security of her HR day-job held her firmly in place. You're about to hear Tiffany's journey from dreamer to doer, the stumbling blocks she faced as a taller woman in fashion, and how she eventually learned to choose her own path. Tiffany talks about:Cultivating an environment that allows her to dream bigWhy striving for perfection actually hinders your progressHow she brought her vision and bring it to life through actionHow the internet pressures us to achieve rapidly at a young ageLeaving the navy for entrepreneurship & proving doubters wrong Starting her business with her husband in Hawaii during the pandemic We'd love to hear your feedback! In today's episode we explore a powerful insight from retired Archbishop Charles Chaput. He reminds us that if the Catholic Church just becomes one more mouthpiece of ethical pieties and 'I Stand With..." hashtags then we really don't have anything to offer the world they can't get from turning on Oprah or watching The View. We have to be bold and confident in our proclamation of the eternal truths that change the trajectory of every human life. We have to be radical and courageous if we want to live up to the great significance of both our baptism and also our vocational mission as Catholic educators. Jared Brewington has had quite the year. Not only did he have to shut down a restaurant but his very identity as a black man became under attack, once again, during one of the biggest race movements of all time. Thankfully, he’s had a chance to escape all the noise under the trees at his farmland in Cologne, MN.I drove 45 minutes west from St. Paul to visit Jared, a good friend of mine, to talk about how he has been processing this year and what’s coming next.As of right now, Jared has no physical restaurant that you can support. However, he is in the process of reviving some old concepts (Funky Grits, Thigh Times Birdhouse) and starting a new one (family restaurant in Cologne).//“What True Self, Feels Bogus, Let's Watch Jason X” by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/“Another Version of You” by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/“CGI Snake” by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/
As the proprietor of a black-owned business, many people are asking Chef Gerard Klass how they can support him and his peers. Well, there are more ways than you might think.Klass owns Soul Bowl, which is a soul food restaurant at the Graze food hall in Minneapolis. The operation started out as a pop-up but slowly grew into an operation that needed a home.Although the restaurant has bounced back from the COVID-19 sales hit, their souls were hurt by the George Floyd tragedy. In this episode, we go to the city of Utrecht in the central part of the Netherlands to talk to Elliot Lyons, a writer and photographer who left the United States in 2008 and has lived in the Netherlands since then. We chatted in the beginning of June 2020. By then, massive protests against racism and police brutality have swept the United States. I wanted to hear what Elliot had to say about watching the United States from abroad. What does one do with hope immediately after a wave of hopelessness which the COVID-19 pandemic intensified? Why should we be critical of project America and its legacy? What do we make of black squares and #blackouttuesday at a time when overcommunication about black organizing is vital? These are some of the topics discussed in this episode. Additional resources: Elliot Lyons can be found on Instagram as @elliot_lyons. Happiness is unarguably considered one of the great aims of life. But finding happiness can be a frustrating and confusing process as there are numbers of philosophical pathways to get there. Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen's Capability Approach cuts through this confusion and offers a single way to ensure well-being for each and every person. On this episode we explore the Capability Approach and consider a way toward implementing it using a challenging philosophical thought problem.Instagram: @grandtheoriesTwitter: @grand_theoriesMusic: The following is utilized under a Creative Commons 4.0 License:1. What exactly "nothing" is has enticed philosophers for quite some time. In 2014, philosopher-mathematician Graham Priest put forward his own two cents on the matter when trying to solve the metaphysical problem of what makes a bunch of parts into a whole. In doing so, he proposes that "nothing" is a crucial linchpin within the nature of everything. But he doesn't stop there. Priest also compares his own solution to a Western philosophical problem with the Eastern doctrine of Buddhism.Instagram: @grandtheoriesTwitter: @grand_theoriesMusic:The following is utilized with permission from the band:Ksyatriya - "The Human Ego Must be Obliterated for its Arrogant Reign of Tyranny - II", "Hazchem", and "Swimming in a Sea of Samsara" from the album "The Arduous Search for Freedom".Find Ksyatriya's music here: https://ksyatriya.bandcamp.com/Next album dropping in 2019The following is utilized under a Creative Commons 4.0 License:1. Cosmopsychism is a school of thought which argues that the universe possesses a conscious mind. While the idea itself can be traced back many thousands of years, there are arguably very few philosophers who take the idea seriously today. Enter Philip Goff, who in recent years is attempting to take his arguments for a conscious universe to the mainstream. In this episode, we explore the mechanics of consciousness and cosmopsychism, look at modern arguments made by philosopher Philip Goff, and ultimately use a variety of ideas to hypothesize what a conscious universe might look like and mean for humanity.Twitter: grand_theoriesInstagram: grandtheoriesFacebook: grandtheoriesEmail: grandtheories@gmail.comMusic:All music utilized under Creative Commons Attribution License 4.01. Today Trudeau weighed in, as if he was above the fray. He described himself as someone observing, outside of it. As if he were a referee, not a fighter. Or a critic of a play, not an actor in it. You see, he said, there are two sides to the story — JWR and Gerald Butts. And Trudeau will tell you who was right. TONIGHT I'll show you some clips of Trudeau's remarks from this morning. GUEST Anthony Furey.

This week, we’re sharing a highly subjective journey through one narrow, eccentric, corridor of radio advertising, as heard through the ears of one man. His name is Clive Desmond. Clive is a radio advertising producer, writer, and composer. He’s been doing it for more than thirty years, and he’s won some of the industry’s top awards. Through those years he’s been sort of a zelig figure: you can find his face somewhere in the margins of every one of the medium’s key aesthetic revolutions. He’s rescued beautiful forgotten nuggets of radio history, and he’s delicately arranged them into a glittering associative chain—a constellation of jingles and spots that somehow all add up, to a life: The life of Clive Desmond as heard through the radio. Listen below to a special bonus playlist of some of the finest radio-advertising nuggets Clive assembled: In this episode, you’ll also hear Josh Wilker read his review of our program. “A man claiming to be from The Organist came to the parking lot gate out back. He said he needed access to the building’s electricity meter. We looked at one another through the bars.†Josh Wilker is the author of the pop-culture memoirs Cardboard Gods, Benchwarmer, and The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training. He lives in Chicago. You can also check out our episode on Mal Sharpe, a man who was among the first wave of fake newsmen, paving the way from everyone from Borat to Colbert. In this week’s episode, Clive Desmond cites Mal as one of the originators of the “man on the street†radio commercial. Special thanks to Doug Thompson, Dan Aron, Nick Ream and Jennifer Sharper. One of the goals that Yolanda and I have for this special series is finding concrete solutions to the whole gender inequality issue in the entertainment business. One solution that is often bandied about (and in fact was an impetus for this mini-series) is for women to adopt more of the headstrong, confident, dare I say, "aggressive" tendencies of their male counterparts. But in this special bonus episode, Yolanda shares a heartfelt and personal sentiment that makes her want to call bullsh*t on that notion. It's a short episode, so I really encourage you to take the ten minutes or so and hear what she has to say. We'd love to hear YOUR story as it relates to what Yolanda shares. Feel free to do so anonymously if you so desire. You can email us your story to radiofilmschool@daredreamer.fm. Or, if you're so inclined, send a voice memo to that email address, or leave a voicemail at the bottom of any page on daredreamer.fm. Your story just might be what some woman out there needs to hear right now to change their whole life.About the Mini-seriesBreaking the Glass is a Radio Film School podcast mini-series and short film docu-series addressing the issues of gender inequality in film and television. Since 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of Disney-Pixar's Toy Story, I thought it would be fun to do a special about animation. Actually, the truth is, one of my conversations with frequent show guest JD Cochran got off on a 45-minute tangent about South Park...so I used it as a basis for an episode. I also talk with Slashfilmcast co-host Jeff Cannata and wedding filmmaking master and USC film grad Kevin Shahinian about why Pixar is arguably the most successful studio in Hollywood.Support our SponsorClick here and use offer code radio for a one-time Standard Gold Level license worth $30.Music in this EpisodeThe opening pre-roll music is "Never Knew" by Dani Elliott courtesy of Song Freedom.
