Welcome to Notable Leaders Radio! I'm Belinda Pruyne, in this milestone 100th episode, I'm celebrating the incredible guests who've shared their wisdom, courage, and vulnerable stories over the years.  In today's episode, we discuss: Discover the real journeys behind "overnight success" stories—Because you'll see that even the most accomplished leaders face setbacks and internal challenges, giving you permission to honor your own slow burn to success rather than compare yourself to unrealistic narratives. Those “overnight successes” actually take 15 years of hard work and pushing through whatever is in your way. Learn about finding and using your unique voice, especially in male-dominated industries (Ivy Slater's, Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz's, Michelle Russo's, Amy Conway-Hatcher's, Dr Mary O'Connor's, stories)—If you're struggling to stand out or be heard, their insights will help you leverage your strengths in any challenging environment.  Hear diverse stories of joy, resilience, and strategic risk-taking—so you can build more joy, clarity, and growth into your own work, borrowing from actionable wisdom shared by a variety of leaders, from corporate executives to entertainers/authors to military figures, and the list goes on. See the power of “Being More You, Not Faux You” in tough situations (Amanda Hawkins' story)—You'll realize that authenticity isn't just a nice idea, but a winning strategy for building trust and influence with even the most senior decision-makers. Take away unique mindsets like architecting a life by design (Chad Lefebvre) versus a life by default—As a way to challenge accepted norms and intentionally create a fulfilling path, instead of just accepting what you're given. Understand how personal experiences outside of business (from dance to the board room, riding instructor to corporate executive…) can shape leadership strengths—Meaning you can tap into your own life story and skills for professional advantage, not just traditional credentials. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group He highlights how applying the principles of service, goal-setting, and valuing people has shaped his journey from financial planning to building successful restaurant groups and supporting arts organizations. In today's episode, we discuss: True business success is rooted in serving others, not just making profits, because when work benefits others, it leads to deeper happiness and long-lasting impact, meaning you can feel good about making a difference while growing your business. Skills and principles are transferable from one industry to another, as David demonstrates by applying the same collaborative and organizational strategies across finance, food, and the arts, so you're not stuck on one path and can reinvent yourself in new fields with confidence. Pivotal life changes often start with self-awareness and honesty about dissatisfaction, like David's shift from being a successful stockbroker to a more fulfilling (but initially less lucrative) fee-based financial planning career. The lesson? It's okay, and sometimes essential, to pivot, especially if your values aren't being met. Caring for your team's well-being, even at a short-term cost, pays off through loyalty, retention, and greater future success, as shown by David's choice to keep his executive team during tough times, so you can build a lasting, supportive company culture.   Guest Bio David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group My primary role is as the co-founder and CEO of One Wealth Advisors, where we help people simplify their lives and achieve financial goals through Financial Life Planning. I am also the co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group and the co-founder and Managing Partner of Great Gold Hospitality Group. Additionally, I bring extensive expertise and a range of resources to small business consulting, primarily in, but not limited to, the hospitality space. Alongside my teams, we support clients in various aspects of business development and operations to help them achieve their goals and vision. The culinary, health, arts, and entertainment worlds are particularly important to me, as reflected in my advisory roles with Noise Pop, Brilliant Corners, Rad Restaurant Group and Folk Studios. While my background may suggest diverse interests, everything I do follows a consistent, disciplined approach: working collaboratively with partners and team members, setting clear goals, developing and executing strategic plans to achieve those goals, and continually monitoring results to ensure success.   Website/Social Links https://davidsteele.xyz/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-steele-76088a?   Belinda's Bio: Belinda Pruyne is a renowned Leadership Advisor, Executive Coach, Consultant, and Keynote Speaker recognized for her ability to transform executives, professionals, and small business owners into highly respected, influential leaders. We live happier, healthier, and longer lives when we feel deeply connected to other people. And while we might experience and express this need in different ways, the need for social connection is really universal. It's so fundamental that we have built-in biological mechanisms to encourage it. When we're socially isolated, our brain triggers cravings for human contact, in much the same way that it triggers cravings for food after a few hours of not eating. So, we literally crave connection. And that's why so many of us felt starved for connection during the pandemic. The problem is that in everyday life, many of us simply ignore the craving or we deny it. We treat socializing like an indulgence rather than an essential health behavior, and we fail to prioritize it. We recognize the importance of sleep, exercise, and healthy eating, and we take steps to maintain them. But going out with friends, going to Happy Hour, Trivia Night, these things often take a backseat. Somehow, they feel less important when in reality,

What if joy isn't something you chase but something you create? In this episode, Sabine sits down with Lisa McCourt, bestselling author and founder of Joy School, to uncover the secrets to sustainable happiness. Lisa shares her incredible journey from fear and anxiety to living a life full of joy and how you can do the same by embracing self-compassion and spiritual growth. If you're ready to step into your light and create a life you love, this conversation is for you! Lisa McCourt, a bestselling author, host of the Joy Zone podcast, and founder of Joy School. Lisa has sold over 9 million copies of her books, including Free Your Joy: The 12 Keys to Sustainable Happiness, and has spent two decades teaching spiritual tools for cultivating joy. Lisa shares her journey from an anxious, fearful childhood to discovering spiritual principles that transformed her life. Her passion for psychology and comparative religion led her to study ancient wisdom, including Buddhism and the Tao Te Ching, which became the foundation of her teachings. She credits a divine moment—receiving her first Wayne Dyer book at age 14—as the catalyst for her spiritual exploration. Key Insights from Lisa McCourt: Path to Becoming a Joy Coach: Lisa transitioned from working in children's publishing, where she authored the enduringly popular I Love You, Stinky Face, to leading workshops on creativity. Over time, her workshops evolved to focus on creating joyful lives, which resonated deeply with adults. Self-Compassion Over Self-Esteem: Lisa explains how shifting her focus from achieving self-esteem (which often involves comparison) to practicing self-compassion was pivotal in finding joy and inner peace. She now teaches this principle as part of her Joy School curriculum. Finding Purpose Through Challenges: Lisa emphasizes how even dark moments, such as her lonely and anxious childhood, led her to profound spiritual growth. Her journey was incremental, inspired by books and teachers, and she believes challenges shape our next steps in life. Sabine's Reflections: Sabine draws parallels to her own journey from performing arts to coaching, sharing how her passion for empowering others evolved over time. She highlights how experiences, even unexpected ones, contribute to a meaningful life path. Takeaway Message: Joy is cultivated through self-compassion, spiritual growth, and embracing the lessons of life's challenges. Both Sabine and Lisa inspire listeners to embrace their evolution, step into their light, and help others find joy and fulfillment. Are you ready to transform fear into excitement and find true inner peace? Embrace fear as a signpost for growth? Learn how to release those things that trigger you?Hear Lauren Abrams and Lisa McCourt discuss embracing fear as a signal for potential growth and change. Learn how to shift your mindset from fear to excitement and allow it to guide you toward your most fulfilling life. Discover the profound difference between conditioned wants and soul wants, and how aligning your actions with your true desires can bring unparalleled joy. "That fear means that, oh, there's something potentially big and juicy in front of me here."    - Lisa (15:06)  “Emotion is meant to flow through us and be released. And when we have traumatic situations or little traumas, it doesn't have to be what we think of as traumas.” -Lisa (8:46) Uncover techniques for managing emotional triggers and practicing self-compassion to release stored emotional pain. “When we have these triggers happen, the tendency is to tense up either our physical bodies or just our energetic body. And usually, you can feel somewhere in your physical body got tense, whether your brow is furrowed or your shoulders. So then it's just relaxing your whole physical body when you have the ability to do this in the moment.” - Lisa (10:07) Discover from Lisa how adding mindfulness and meditation into your everyday routine can help you see things differently and experience general emotional development.  “It's giving yourself compassion around your anxiety. We compound everything. We feel anxiety, and then we get mad at ourselves for feeling anxiety, or we feel, you know, like annoyed or stressed. And then it's like, what do you have to be stressed about? You should be so good. You know, it's like we compound it by judging ourselves for our negative emotions.” - Lisa (13:19)  Find out the deep insights Lisa shares as she explores how these transformational strategies act as triggers for you to re-establish a deep connection with yourself. Learn more about how mindfulness and meditation help you distinguish between the critical and loving voices inside of you. “Our negative emotions are just human. They're beautiful, and they're there because of something that took place. And it's okay. And we just have to love ourselves through it.” - Lisa (13:34)  The Path to True Happiness: "We have to learn how to have the peace, the joy, the calm in our inner landscape, and then that energy goes out and so effortlessly starts changing everything in our external landscape."      - Lisa (16:50)  One of the standout segments in this episode is Lisa's advice on discerning between conditioned wants and what your soul truly desires. This guidance is a game-changer for anyone feeling unfulfilled, despite ticking off all the metaphorical boxes of success. Lisa passionately emphasizes aligning your actions with what genuinely brings you fulfillment. “It's really just, again, getting some discernment between the voices in our head like that super loud voice of our inner critic and that ticker tape that's constantly going by. We have to be able to quiet that to hear the little bit more sensitive, delicate voice behind it.” - Lisa (20:30) Learn self-compassion techniques. Be gentle with yourself. Recognize and release negative thoughts, and practice self-compassion to overcome past conditioning and emotional pain. “Hear the voice in your head, take some distance to, to watch the thoughts that are going by. We bring so much additional interior muck into our worlds with that voice in our heads, which goes on to create all these problems that we have out here. The whole game of whack a mole could basically be avoided if we would learn to be more compassionate with ourselves and not let our thoughts take us down all these dark roads.” - Lisa (27:55)   In this episode:  (00:34) - Introduction of the guest, Lisa McCourt (07:13) - Discussion on taking pauses and managing stress (09:39) - Coping mechanisms for disturbances (11:03) - Effective tools for anxiety and overwhelm (13:06) - Being comfortable with fear (14:58) - The gifts of living in joy and bliss (17:02) - The power of practicing self-refrain (17:44) - Conclusion on personal mastery (17:59) - Inner Consciousness and Happiness (18:13) - Experience of Silent Retreat (18:40) - Impact of Silent Retreat and Personal Growth (19:12) - Conditioned Wants vs Soul Wants (20:19) - Pleasure and Chores vs Inner Calling (21:55) - Self-Care and Importance of Balance in Life (24:12) - Overcoming Life's Challenges and Discovering Authentic Self (27:30) - Emphasizing Self-love and Self-compassion   Resources and Links  52 Weeks of Hope https://www.52weeksofhope.com/        https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauren-abrams-83b8b421/  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyLA7Rb6E0PtKBhPGu1vcjA https://www.facebook.com/52weeksofhope/ https://www.instagram.com/52weeksofhope/ https://twitter.com/52weeksofhope Get your FREE Confidence and Clarity Growth Scorecard About Lisa McCourt Lisa McCourt is the author of "Free Your Joy: The 12 Keys to Sustainable Happiness" and dozens of other books about love and joy that have together sold over 9 million copies. What does Buddhism say about happiness? Better yet, how do we access it and sustain it, especially when faced with difficulties? In today's episode, Rachel Salomonsen and Jim Krampf talk us through two of the biggest challenges to our happiness—our relationships with loved ones and situations in which we are faced with impossibly difficult circumstances. Here's the key takeaway: By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and taking full responsibility for our happiness, we can become people of conviction and tolerance—key qualities of a life of sustainable happiness. Note: Buddhist Solutions for Life's Problems is supported by subscriptions to SGI-USA publications. As a Silicon Valley-based psychologist, I frequently hear from my clients about their work woes. These woes are often the result of companies who erroneously subscribe to harsh techniques in trying to bring out the best in their employees, which is in line with the old cliché “The beatings will continue until morale is increased.” Not surprisingly, that doesn't work. Harsh practices may yield short-term benefits. Yet, creating positive workspaces appears to improve virtually all measures of long-term results. And while some people may lionize harsh practices or consider positive practices to be fuzzy, the science doesn't lie; implementing positive work practices is good business. Thankfully, many companies are noting this to the benefit of all stakeholders, including at least two major high-tech companies where I've served as a resiliency consultant. And that is why I am so excited to share with you my interview with this wonderful guest. Dr. Emma Seppälä is a professor at Yale School of Management. She also serves as the Science Director at Stanford University's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research Education and is the author of a book I absolutely adored called The Happiness Track. I am not alone in my appreciation of Emma and her work. I wholly agree with Susan Cain, the author of Quiet, who said Emma's work, “not only teaches us how to thrive in our chosen profession, but how to stay true to ourselves.” So, listen in as Emma and I geek out to the research about what really makes us thrive at work. Great questions on cortisol, adrenaline, sex, bonding and 14 Days to Sustainable Happiness, with reader Kristen Helmstetter.THE HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST helps you blaze new trails to your dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin. My guests are pioneers in retraining the inner mammal. I love learning from them! Listen in and subscribe so you can blaze new trails to your happy chemicals too.Your host, Loretta Breuning is founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and author of "Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels."Life is more peaceful and satisfying when you understand your inner mammal. Good feelings come from brain chemicals we've inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. It's not easy, alas. Our brain is designed to release happy chemicals when you take steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them— a lot!The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's many books illuminate the big picture and help you plot your course. You can feel good in new ways, no matter where you are right now.     He’s a fitness coach and lifestyle coach with over 22 years of experience.  Our host Wade T. Lightheart was excited to get another interview with Joe DiStefano - a true winner who overcame a traumatic brain injury years ago that astounded his doctors. His unique personal story gets covered in episode 99 of the Awesome Health Podcast (link below).  After recovering, Joe built a successful health and wellness business called RUNGA - an experiential lifestyle brand that includes a robust online community of healthy-minded people. RUNGA has adapted to recent changes brought on by Covid and is still thriving today. Joe loves empowering individuals to live highly effective and sustainable lives that fuel health, wellness, and performance.  Through the course of Joe’s career journey as a fitness trainer, he has put together a unique method for sustainable happiness that is the primary focus of this episode. Listen in and discover Joe’s six life-changing methods that are so simple, anyone can do them. When done consistently, Joe’s clients achieve a reliably steady level of overall wellbeing.  Joe is also the host of the STACKED podcast, where he interviews compelling guests on topics related to health and wellness. Wade is one of those exciting guests. (Link to Wade’s interview on STACKED below.)  In this podcast, we cover: Why you cannot rely on the government to keep you healthy Joe’s six powerful methods for living life with sustainable happiness (one is intermittent fasting) The type of people reaching out to Joe and what they’re looking for How Joe defines the differences between fitness and health How Joe coaches former athletes who are aging and need to make adjustments in their fitness routines and goals Why kettlebell workouts help you sustain happiness The health benefits of cold immersion (another of the six methods to lasting happiness)  The urgency to take responsibility for your wellness in 2021 People contact RUNGA to find THIS Wade asks Joe at one point: what does a typical client of RUNGA look like, and what are their needs?  Joe describes his customer base as a spectrum of avatars. Some are like Wade - they know their stuff and want to find a community of like-minded people. Another avatar consists of fitness buffs who have not achieved their fitness goals for whatever reason - it could be a trauma or some emotional barrier or a negative relationship with food.  Joe and his team carry out a careful application process. Every person that wants to come in is personally spoken to - and heard.  Through that application process, RUNGA then curates a group of people that Joe and his team believe will work well together. This group grows close during the RUNGA four-day events. Sometimes a group that is dealing with the same issue gets curated together.  On the outside, these clients might appear quite different. However, they all need to find a sense of stillness. They need to quiet the mental chatter, addiction to the latest and greatest, new diet, new things, etc.  RUNGA brings people back to the basics. Joe’s clients have a profound interest in health and wellness, but they know something is missing, something isn’t right. They might look like Mr. Universe but still suffer health issues (like Wade did years ago.)  How to get back to daily exercise when life takes you off course for a while During the interview, Wade asks Joe how a person can get their fitness back on track after letting themselves go during the pandemic. (People in the U.S. have gained an average of 29 pounds since the lockdowns began in 2020.)  Joe’s response: “As long as you make space for (exercise), and you understand that that happens automatically, and you don’t try to force anything, it’ll happen and take you on this journey. I think we’re so used to being in control. We are used to forcing everything and working for it. We can’t let go enough.” “That’s one thing I can help people with - that understanding. I just had a call with a woman who had some surgery, and now she’s saying, ‘I gotta get back to the gym. I gotta do this.’ You know, she just had her neck cut open. She’s got a big wound there. So I’m like, “Hey, right now, be a little easy on yourself. If I told you right now to do a thousand burpees in your garage, that’s not going to be good for you. What would be good for you is to walk into your garage and peddle a few times on your bike. Pick up a kettlebell a couple of times, and leave. Because we’re trying to anchor that habit of getting into the garage, but we’re not judging what happens in the garage right now.” “All we’re doing is maintaining that habit so that the wheels don’t fall off. Then, when you’re ready to crush it again, you don’t have to start at zero because the routine of going into the garage at 10:00 a.m. never leaves.”  As the pandemic fizzles out, now is the perfect time to get back to living a more fit and healthy lifestyle. If you are tired of working out alone in your basement and are yearning to find a community of health-minded people who want to achieve a more consistent, steady level of happiness and contentment, tune in to this episode. Joe explains the six methods to feeling great every day. You just have to “anchor the habit” because the government can’t do it for you! In today's episode Nicholas Olesen, CFP®, CPWA® talks with Professor Jaime Kurtz, Ph.D. about her new audiobook, The Psychology of Happiness. Through this conversation Dr. Kurtz shares her expertise and insight to help us all understand how happiness can be "coached" and internalized versus just a momentary feeling.  A few of the questions we covered are: How has the field of psychology changed over time in regard to understanding and measuring happiness? What can we do to cause happiness versus it just happens to be our internal bias? How and why our happiness impacts to many other areas of our lives? How can we spend money in a way that promotes happiness? As the author of "The Happy Traveler", in what ways can we change how we plan and enjoy vacations to help the happiness of them last longer? For a full transcript to today's show, please visit: https://bit.ly/3f8HLFa  Dr. Kurtz is an Associate Professor of Psychology at James Madison University, where she teaches courses on Social Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Positive Psychology, and Psychological Research Methods.
