Week 1… Know that you are in a spiritual battle Week 2… Walk in the light because the dark creates monsters Week 3… Wear the “uniform/armor” of the Christ Believer Week 4: Pray to know God and advance His kingdom Ephesians 6:10-18 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. 13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, 15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. How do we stand? How do we fight for our life? With a plan for Battle! How do you stand when things aren't going well/your way? When life is unusually difficult A plan for battle… Step 1: Recognizing the season you're in Ecclesiastes 3 1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Your season dictates your capacity Recognize your season so you can fight the enemy properly Some seasons are inward Distraction Weakness Fear Weariness Unbelief Denial Frustration Grief/hurt Some seasons are Outward Season of life Work time/stress Kids Physical issues Your season can make it seem like you are drowning Your enemy will use this to his advantage A plan for battle… Step 2: Address Continual Sin Sin Separates People from God People from People People from the Spirit's power in their life James 1:14-15 14 Each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. Be killing sin or it will be killing you. ~ John Owen (1600's) Don't be convinced that your sin is “neutral” **SOME Examples of Sneaky Sin** What we think What we see How we respond John Owen's “The Mortification of Sin” Diagnose sin's severity Grasp sin's serious consequences Be convinced of your guilt Earnestly desire deliverance Consider the relationship between your sins and your natural temperament Avoid occasions that incite sin Address sin's first signs Meditate on God's glory Don't rush to comfort yourself Romans 8 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. Be Killing Sin of it will be killing you… A plan for battle… Step 3: Know Who You Are Romans 8 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. You are Sons and Daughters of God “MY DAD CAN BEAT UP YOUR DAD…” MY DAD CAN BEAT UP MY DEVIL” Children expect good things Children trust their father Some of you did not have healthy relationships with you fathers, but God is not that kind of father, He is a GOOD FATHER A plan for battle… Step 4: Grab a Hand and Lend a Hand Genesis 2:18 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.” No solo fighters Strength in numbers Alone and vulnerable Your faith as a shield protects me, those next to me, and those wounded around me Mentor/training Hebrews 10 24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching. Romans 8 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Take Courage Fight the good fight!

These artifacts are designed to augment traditional, analytical approaches to future studies with imagination and sensory experiences. * Design Fiction as a Tool: The value of design fiction is that it's a method that translates ideas and scenarios about the future into tangible, visual forms. You can think of Design Fiction's translation of research analysis into something engaging as an analog to the way a screenplay becomes an immersive, engaging visual story when it is made into a film. After summarizing the Orthodox approach to scripture, Fr. Anthony begins a verse by verse examination of Genesis One. We made it up to "Image and Likeness!" Review. We have to read texts according to their purpose and scope. The purpose of the Bible is to describe the economy of our salvation (i.e. mankind's sin, Christ/Messiah as our savior). The Bible is inspired; God spoke through prophets and scribes who automatically presented His revelations in their own language, with their own symbols, and in a way that their immediate audiences would understand. Our worldview (our language, symbols, and stories) is very different from those of the prophets, scribes, and their immediate audience; mirror-imaging can lead to incorrect understandings of the Bible, God, and His plan for us. Useful Materials Bouteneff, Peter C.. Beginnings: Ancient Christian Readings of the Biblical Creation Narratives. Louth, A., & Conti, M. (Eds.). Genesis 1–11 (Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture Series). Walton, J. H. (2009). The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate. Genesis One (read the first four days using Septuagint and Hebrew translations; pause to make points). 1. In [the] beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void [Tohu wa bohu]; and darkness was on the face of the deep. 2. And the Spirit of God [!] was hovering over the face of the waters [where did they come from?] 3. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light [!]. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day [?], and the darkness He called Night [?]. So the evening and the morning were the first day [liturgical time!]. 6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven [use of ancient cosmology does not need to be explained away or excused; the explanation is functional, not astronomical/geographical!] . So the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.[imagery of the Nile – agricultural, miraculous, dependable] 11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind [we'll explore this “according to its kind later; order is important in the temple!], whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night [why the ambigious language? De-divinization of creation!]. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Some Observations Although there are similarities with the creation myths of surrounding nations, the contrasts are stark; the Hebrews are given a new way of understand God and the world. E.g. The Enuma Elish (Babylon, at least 7th century BC) has Marduk overcoming chaos (personified in Tiamat); he then creates the heaven and earth by splitting her. In the Genesis creation account, creation is demythologized (e.g. deep/chaos, sun, stars). These sorts of things show up later, but the creation account is kept pristine so as to make the distinction between Creator and creation clear. There is a pattern (7 days, 7 “it was good's”; things are “according to their kind”) that speaks not just to poetry, but to liturgical use. Speaking of liturgy, note that evening is the beginning of the day (as with Vespers). You can imagine this being chanted/sung the way we do Psalm 103 at Vespers (creation!). Creation is spoken into being. See also the Gospel of John 1 (“In the beginning was the Word…”) and Amos 8 (fear a famine of the Word). Also see C.S. Lewis The Magician's Nephew. We know that creation is ex nihilo (from nothing), but that is not necessarily being asserted here (although many say it is). This is not a description of a factory of creation (i.e. the “how” of creation), but a functional creation (purpose and meaning). Some Examples of the Functional Creation Day One: The creation of time. Day Two: Room for people to live. Weather. Day Three: Production of food. Some Commentary: St. Augustine, One the Literal Interpretation of Genesis 3:10. Scripture called heaven and earth that formless matter of the universe, which was changed into formed and beautiful natures by God's ineffable command.… This heaven and earth, which were confused and mixed up, were suited to receive forms from God their maker. Basil the Great; Hexaemeron 1.5. It appears, indeed, that even before this world an order of things existed of which our mind can form an idea but of which we can say nothing, because it is too lofty a subject for men who are but beginners and are still babes in knowledge. The birth of the world was preceded by a condition of things suitable for the exercise of supernatural powers, outstripping the limits of time, eternal and infinite. The Creator and Demiurge of the universe perfected his works in it, spiritual light for the happiness of all who love the Lord, intellectual and invisible natures, all the orderly arrangement of pure intelligences who are beyond the reach of our mind and of whom we cannot even discover the names. Rev. Dr. John Polkinghorne (excerpted from On Being) I mean, this is an extraordinary thing, Genesis 1 … things don't quite come in the right order. I mean, it's striking that it begins with energy for light, “Let there be light.” It's striking that life starts in the waters and moves onto the land. But of course … the sun and moon and stars only come on the fourth day. And of course, there wouldn't be any life without the stars, because that's where they make the raw material for life. So that isn't right. And we believe that one of the reasons, we believe in theology, one of the reasons why the sun, moon and stars come downstream, so to speak, is that the writer is wanting to say the sun and the moon aren't deities. They're not to be worshipped…. They are creatures just like everything else. And that shows us that what we're reading is a theologically oriented thing and not a scientifically oriented thing. I mean, you have to figure out, when you read something and you want to read it respectfully, you have to figure out what it is you're reading. Is it poetry or is it prose? If you read poetry and think it's prose, you will make the most astonishing mistakes. [And Genesis 1…] is much more like a poem than like prose. And that's, in a sense, the sadness of the “creationist” so-called position, that these people who are really wanting to be respectful to scripture are, I think, ironically, being disrespectful, because they're not using it in the right way. Walton, J. H. (pp. 49–50). The creation account in Genesis 1 can then be seen to begin with no functions rather than with no material. At this point, however, it is important to establish what we mean when we talk of functions… In the ancient world, function was not the result of material properties, but the result of purpose. The sun looks down on all and is associated with the god of justice. It functions as a marker for time and seasons. When the ancient texts talk about how something functions in an ordered system, the system under discussion is not a cosmic or ecological system. It is a system inhabited by beings…In the Old Testament God has no needs and focuses functionality around people. We will see increasing evidence of this understanding as we move through the remainder of Genesis 1. Consequently, functionality cannot exist without people in the picture. In Genesis people are not put in place until day six, but functionality is established with their needs and situation in mind. Major Points for Discussion Who is God (i.e. what does “Elohim” mean?). Elohim is a plural noun that can either describe beings from the/a spiritual realm (e.g. gods, angels, maybe even ghosts) or the One Uncreated God (it's obvious which one it is by grammatical context). What does “according to its kind” mean? It is not an attack on science. Here's a gem of a quote from St. Augustine's tract against Felix the Manichean (quoted here); In the Gospel we do not read that the Lord said: I send you the Holy Spirit so that He might teach you all about the course of the sun and the moon. The Lord wanted to make Christians, not astronomers. You learn at school all the useful things you need to know about nature. It is true that Christ said that the Holy Spirit will come to lead us into all truth, but He is not speaking there about the course of the sun and the moon. If you think that knowledge about these things belongs to the truth that Christ promised through the Holy Spirit, then I ask you: how many stars are there? I say that such things do not belong to Christian teaching…whereas you affirm that this teaching includes knowledge about how the world was made and what takes place in the world. The point being made is that 1) there is an order to creation that is logical (and created through the Logos!) and 2) the multitude of creation reflects God's glory and purpose. God led the Hebrews to make seeing things “according to their kind a virtuous instinct. What do we lose when we don't? Who is God talking to when He says “Let US make man…”? Different explanations. Could be the “Royal We” (not likely). Could be the Heavenly Hosts (i.e. the Divine Council). The main explanation (because we read in the light of Christ) is the Trinity. What is “The Image of God”? Lots of good answers (ask for some). At the very least, it means that we re-present God in creation (just as Christ does as the New Adam; “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” Colossians 1:15). What is the “Likeness of God”? Again, many good answers. The usual one is that it is His purity and holiness (theosis). This is something we have to grow into (more on that once we talk more about mankind). Enjoy the show!

SPVs are really good things, yet nobody's talking about them. Why not? In today's bite-size episode, host Roland Frasier makes the case for SPVs (Special Purpose Vehicles). A year or so ago, Roland was interviewing https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/ (GaryVEE) (Gary Vaynerchuk) and asked him, “What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first got started?” And Gary gave one of the best answers Roland has ever gotten. He said he could have saved himself tens of millions of dollars if he had known about SPVs when he was younger. Listen in to find out how you can use SPVs to your advantage in every business deal. Why You Should Use an SPV An SPV is a subsidiary company that is formed to undertake a specific business activity. For whatever reason, not a lot of people are talking about SPVs. They sometimes talk about forming companies to protect you from liabilities. We all know it's good not to have a sole proprietorship or partnership where the owners have unlimited personal liability. But a lot of people don't know about SPVs. In fact, if you go down to the place that forms companies, like the Secretary of State, and you say, “I need you to form an SPV for me,” they'll look at you like you're nuts. There is no SPV that you can form. SPV is the use to which you put the entity that you form. Roland is a big proponent of limited liability entities. With an SPV, you're using a limited liability entity for the specific purpose of what you're doing. You're acquiring a company, doing a consulting deal, or going into a new territory. That can be a good time to use an SPV. It just protects you, your personal assets, and your business assets from any liability that comes out of the deal. Some Examples of When to Use an SPV When Roland is looking to do any kind of deal, he does a limited liability entity for that deal. The fact that he's using it for this special occasion, this transaction, that makes it an SPV. It's really just a fancy set of words attorneys use to say “this company, this corporation, this LLC is going to be used to do this one thing.” That one thing might be broad or very specific. Let's say you're acquiring a company. You form an SPV to acquire the assets of the company. As long as you're paying the fair market value, then generally you're not liable for the debts of the company you're buying them from. This is assuming there's not a direct lien against the asset. Then you won't have successor liability. Another situation would be that you're using an SPV to acquire something, and it's going to have seller financing or some kind of debt. Instead of you personally taking on the debt, the SPV will take on the debt. You won't lose your house or have them garnish your wages or lose your investments or other assets to satisfy a claim. As far as when you should do this, it makes sense whenever you're doing anything that potentially creates business or personal liability exposure for you. It's really just a good habit every time you do a deal. You might have a holding company that owns several SPVs, but you really want to separate one for each new deal or partnership. How much does it cost? Just the cost to form an entity—maybe $1k to $2k. There's a company called Prime Corporate Services that does it here in the U.S. Take it from Roland and GaryVee and get an SPV formed whenever you're doing a deal. Study upon study proves that moderate, frequent exercise has many physical and health benefits. However, it is important to examine the ways in which diet and fitness culture are entangled and thus how exercise may be a toxic force in our lives. Why do you exercise: to confront your body in the brutal light of self-objectification and dehumanization in a ceiling to floor, wall to wall mirror? A discussion that is begun in today's episode... Do what you hate to succeed - I know its a controversial topic but think about it, things we hate to do are the things which helps us to succeed . Not the things that make you happy . I am sure that some of you don't like the way I phrased this topic and that's OK because it's the exact opposite of what we've been taught all our lives: “just do what you love and you will be happy” and we generally don't like when our fundamental beliefs are challenged. Things we hate are outside our comfort zone thats where success lies. Sometimes we have to do things we don't want to get what we do want. “Doing what you love” sounds like a good advice at first, but it does not help us lead a happy or successful life. In fact, it will often do the opposite. To feel happy, there is much more to it than just doing the things you enjoy. We enjoy eating junkfood or food that isn't exactly the best, instead of watching our diet; we prefer to watch a movie or play videogames instead of tackling the tough math problem for our exam; and watching YouTube videos, spending time on social media or having a few (too many) drinks with our friends is generally more pleasurable than a hard gym workout or a 10k run in the cold. Having said that, there is surely a place for leisure time and we don't only have to go through our lives like robots, running from achievement to achievement. But if you have big dreams and goals and you find yourself complaining often, this episode is for you. Why You Should Do It Life has it's ups and downs as we all know. However, I see many people denying the downs and not willing to face them or deal with them. You can't do that. You have to properly deal with whatever it is you're going through in order to successfully come out the other end as a better person and more learned individual. In addition, to expand on this further, when it comes to accomplishing goals and achieving your dreams, not every part of that path will be fun, or easy. There's a lot of crap to wade through when you're going through life. You have to understand that it's happening for a reason; the hard parts, the difficult times, the struggle is all teaching you what you need to know to get to the finish. Some Examples of Embracing the Suck From My Own Life Allow me to explain using a few examples from my own life. I'm not saying I'm super successful, but to get to where I am today, I've had to do what I hate over and over again. I don't like to go to the gym but if I don't I gain weight, I don't like to talk a lot but if I don't I don't change my life.. I don't like to go out much as an introvert or meet people, but if I don't I don't meet new people or create association which will help me in the future. Most breakout success comes from going AGAINST the conventional wisdom of the day. Ignore how others think something should be done — do what's authentic to you and learn from your mistakes. There are no “rules,” so don't worry about them. Make your own. Because that's what successful people do. Its March already, you have 10 months left in 2021 including this 15 days . Plenty of time for you to improve your mindset, learn a new skill, change your routine, increase your income, lose weight, gain muscle & whatever goals that you set for yourself, go for it. Until next time Cheers from me! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chicchitra/support

In this episode, I'll be talking about ‘Recognizing and Navigating Seasons of Transition'. Transition is one of those things that many times causes people to become anxious, or even fearful. Leaving one place or state, and moving to another season or place is always difficult, and it involves letting go of what we have come to be so familiar with, and embracing something we know little or nothing about. It is the clean, white sheet of paper between two chapters; it is the story that is unfinished. This week we will dive into this subject, and look at what it means to successfully steward and navigate seasons of transition. Scriptural Principles 13 … I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 3:13-14 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven— 2 A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. 3 A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. 4 A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. 5 A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. 6 A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. 7 A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. 8 A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Main Content: Change is inevitable! 70% of people are wired in such away that they are adverse to change It is easier just to keep things ‘the way they've always been' Yet, life, even creation demands that there be seasons of change Without a winter, we could never have a spring Without planting, we could never know the joy of harvest Without conception, we could never know the joy of children Without leaving one place, we could never know the excitement and adventure of discovering the new We all love the freshness and life that comes with the new beginning, but few of us enjoy the process of letting go of the old, and even fewer the place IN BETWEEN. You see, we are creatures of habit; we are completely addicted to the comfortable and the safe. Our propensity is to be satisfied with the status quo, and to avoid at all costs the necessary changes required to realize true PROGRESS. It really is the quintessential catch 22. Stay comfortable and stay stuck; OR, pursue what is available to us, and deal with that which is unknown to us. The choice is entirely yours, BUT, to for-go the natural seasons of life, and to refuse to allow your life to organically move in the direction of destiny is to choose to die. SEASONS: To everything there is an appointed time, and a season When something's season has come to an end, to continue living in that season's grace will lead to frustration and even failure. So what is the answer.Recognizing and navigating TRANSITION. Webster defines transition as … Passage from one state, stage, subject, or place to another … Change The key word that I want to focus on here is PASSAGE. You see, the starting point is already determined. The destination is also already determined (although you may not yet know where or what that is, yet. The process of PASSAGE is the critical piece. Some Examples of Life Transitions: Graduating from high school In college Seeking first “real” job Newly married Starting a family Navigating a life changing event such as… unemployment, death in the family, divorce, or recovering from addiction Searching Mid-life restlessness Job burnout Starting a business or ministry Emptying the nest Approaching retirement or already there. These, and so many others can be daunting, even debilitating seasons that bring a persons life to a screeching halt. How do we recognize, and even more importantly embrace the CHANGE? How do we fight the resistance that so naturally occurs when faced with a season of transition? 7 Challenges We Often Face When In A Season of Transition: Unwillingness to recognize or acknowledge the END of one season Inability to BURY the past (Abraham/Sarah) Fear of the Unknown Personal Worth/Esteem Issues Fear of Losing Relationships Developing the NEW Discipline of Dreaming Again Walking By Faith, and Not By Sight A Poem For Guidance Child of my love, fear not the unknown morrow, Dread not the new demand life makes of thee; Thy ignorance doth hold no cause for sorrow Since what thou knowest not is known of Me. Thou canst not see the hidden meaning Of my command, but thou the light shall gain; Walk on in faith, upon My promise leaning, And AS THOU GOEST, all shall be made plain. One step thou seest — then go forward boldly, One step is far enough for faith to see; Take that, and thy next duty shall be told thee, For STEP BY STEP thy Lord is leading thee. Stand not in fear thy adversaries counting, Dare every peril, save to disobey; Thou shalt march on, all obstacles surmounting, for I the Strong, WILL OPEN UP THE WAY. Wherefore go gladly to the task assigned thee, Having my promise, needing nothing more Than just to know, wher'er the future find thee, In all thy journeying I go BEFORE NEXT WEEK: Next week I'm going to continue unpacking this thought of ‘Recognizing and Navigating Seasons of Transition'. We will be sharing several key principles that will help you to navigate successfully through YOUR season of transition Be sure to leave us a question at www.BrianHolmes.com and we will do our best to answer it in the show

Because water is so essential it’s possible to use it to bring people together. What Brian Has Done in Nepal (26:07) Brian has worked on the peace process in Nepal. Things looked good on paper, but people had different interpretations about what they were supposed to do. It’s taken over eight years for the process to get underway. You want adversaries to have about the same amount of. Advice to Construction Leaders Who Must Deal with Conflict in Their Teams (33:45) People speak different languages, so collaboration has multiple meanings depending on where you use it. "What does God really have to do with joy in a pragmatic way?" and "What are some things we can do (or do more of) to receive and embrace the joy (that God is actively and regularly providing) in the new year?"
In 1972, the Republican National Committee released an LP of excerpts from speeches by Vice President Spiro T. Agnew on RCA/Victor. The album was produced by Joseph Habig and William Mulligan. It featured the following subjectsSide 1:The Greatest Issue in America TodayA Word to Law Abiding AmericansChallenge to the Hippies"Effete Corps of Impudent Snobs"In Defense of the Courts of the LandSome Thoughts on the Democratic PartyA Word to America's DetractorsSide 2:Some Examples of the Vice President's WitThe Vice President Explains Our Asian PolicyIn Answer to Critics of This Asian PolicyThe Future of the Republican PartyThe Responsibilities of TelevisionConfidence in America's FutureAgnew graduated from the University of Baltimore School of law in 1947, and first ran for political office in 1956. In 1962, he was elected Baltimore County Executive, in 1966 he was elected Governor of Maryland, and in 1968, he became Richard Nixon's running mate, and was elected Vice President. In early 1973, the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland began investigating Agnew on suspicion of conspiracy, bribery, extortion and tax fraud, beginning when he was Baltimore County Executive and Governor of Maryland. On October 10, 1973, Agnew pleaded no contest to a single felony charge of tax evasion and resigned from office. He was replaced by House Minority Leader Gerald Ford.In 1974, Agnew was disbarred by the Maryland Court of Appeals. Unable to practice law, he founded Pathlite, Inc., a business consultancy. In 1976, he published The Canfield Decision, a novel about an American Vice President. The novel was commercially successful, but Agnew was criticized for the protagonist's explicit anti-semitism. Matt and Scott address accessory lifts and how they fit into a well-designed training program. As Matt says, supplemental lifts -- which he first discussed in Episode 21 -- are variants that closely resemble the main lifts, while accessory lifts are lighter, less stressful (but still complex multi-joint) movements that allow more advanced lifters to add small increments of stress. It goes without saying, then, that accessories become useful when more volume with the main lifts or supplemental lifts would be too stressful to recover from, yet additional volume is needed to drive progress. As Scott expounds, accessory movements are useful because they work the antagonist muscle groups to the main lifts. For example, in a bench press the pecs are the primary movers (agonists) while the biceps and lats are the antagonists. Thus, a barbell row would be an accessory movement. Some Examples of Supplemental Lifts Squat Tempo squat High bar squat Box Squat Safety Bar Squat Chains/bands Squats Press Pin Presses / Press Lockouts Seated Press Strict Press Axle Press Bench Close Grip Wide Grip Floor Press Board Press Paused Bench Holds Deadlift Rack Pulls Deficits Isometric-isotonic deadlifts (a la Bill Starr - see Starr's article on these lifts on the Starting Strength site) Cleans/snatches Accessory Lifts Bench Press Barbell Row - pronated or supinated. Matt recommends a pronated grip when doing very heavy barbell rows. A good goal is to try to get your row equal to your bench press. Dips - weighted or not. Although dips could also be considered a supplemental lift since they do resemble a decline bench press. Starr recommended training dips very heavy once per week and light another slot per week. Press Chin-ups - and its sister the pull-up (performed with any grip variation). Lying Tricep Extensions - since the triceps control both elbow and humerus extension, LTEs are a useful accessory for the press. Straight bar curls - or use the EZ bar if you're struggling with biceps tendonitis. Curls are also useful accessories for the chin-up, particularly for bigger guys who struggle with doing a lot of chin-up volume. Deadlift Barbell Rows provide some additional work for the upper back. Note that we don't discuss many accessories for the lower body lifts. The lower body musculature is larger and stronger, and responds more robustly to the main and supplemental lifts. Thus, most people won't require accessory movements for the lower body. Matt and Scott recommend adding accessories when a trainee moves into a 4-day split model, adding in one lat movement, one bicep movement, and one tricep movement each week. Remember these are accessory movements, so they are only used to add a little extra volume without adding huge amounts of stress and impact on the joints. When adding any movement, we must consider training economy. We don't do exercises for the sake of doing them, we do them because they fit logically into our model for training advancement. In fact, most trainees will only need to perform chin-ups (often called the fifth main lift) and barbell rows (the sixth lift) during their training career. Which works best between the two? (Shawn Arent, an exercise scientist at Rutgers University. There was a huge difference between working out two and three days a week. While any amount of exercise is an improvement over none at all, if you're already in decent shape, exercising for just two days a week will not get you much additional benefit.) Logic is about understanding reality in a non-contradictory way and how can we see things for what they are. Metaphysical Laws 1.Identity 2.Causality 3.Non-Contradiction Topic: A discussion about my new idea for advancing the message of liberty, articulating a sound methodology, and removing the irrationality and pacifying the emotional mayhem of the average political argument. 'Tis the season... POLITICAL DEBATE CONTRACT For honest, rational, and meaningful discussions about important issues. TOPIC/QUESTION: _________________________________________________ All Parties Agree to Avoid Red Herrings Clause #1: Clarification of Purpose Before proceeding, all parties must communicate the goals they are trying achieve through this argument/conversation. More importantly, all parties must identify the intellectual or emotional needs they are trying to have met through such an interaction. Clause #2: Ethical and Logical Consistency Because almost all political arguments grow from the need of all parties determine right from wrong, or moral from immoral, each party must articulate a clear foundation of principles or axioms upon which all of their political positions are built. EXAMPLE: “I am a Republican/Democrat/Libertarian, and that political belief system is built upon the impenetrable idea that (insert principles here) . Please avoid abstract language and subjective claims like: “America is the greatest country in the world!” OR “Freedom is the answer.” OR “Obama says...” All your subsequent arguments and statements must not contradict the principles you put forward at this step. All elements of your current political belief system must be consistent with these principles. Clause #3: Avoiding the Box While the discussion must stay on the agreed upon topic, all parties must agree to abstain from the tactic of putting their opponent(s) "in a box." This refers to attempts to control the context of the discussion in a way that is advantageous to you. EXAMPLES: 1. Lifeboat Scenarios 2. Straw-Man Fallacy 3. Loaded Questions (Trap-Setting) 4. Special Pleading Fallacy (The Retreat) Clause #4: Foundation of Facts All parties must be able to demonstrate that their opinion/claim/call-to-action is built upon a foundation of facts with which their opponent agrees. This is often the most challenging part of any debate because each party will have different strengths and deficits in his or her knowledge-base. Both parties will agree to fact-checking in real time (internet) if necessary. Clause #5: Ideological Flexibility You agree that if your opponent can clearly demonstrate that your argument contains numerous inconsistencies, contradictions or other general errors in reasoning, you will follow up by doing all of the following: 1. avoid launching into an emotion-driven invective against your opponent, including ad hominem attacks (aka FIGHT) 2. avoid the “taking my ball and going home” tactic, where you say something like, “I've had it with this! There's no talking to you! And everyone is entitled to their own opinion anyway. Goodbye.” (aka FLIGHT) 3. admit that your position needs additional research and consideration 4. agree to consume two (2) pieces of educational media chosen for you by your opponent (articles, book excerpts, videos, podcasts, etc...) SOME EXAMPLES of common reasoning errors to avoid: Appeal to Emotion/Fear, Appeal to Authority, Appeal to Popularity, Circular Reasoning, Ambiguity, Equivocation, the Genetic Fallacy, Fallacy of Composition/Division, Fallacy of the Excluded Middle, and Appeal to Tradition Signatures: PARTY 1 ______________________________ PARTY 2 ______________________________ WITNESS ______________________________ This is an edited version the 8-30-12 live show and the After School (Sucks) Special.
