This week we are feeding you guys another wartime documentary. This one is called The Fighting Lady. A so-called "news drama" of the day, the Fighting Lady focuses on the exploits of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) from her commissioning through many of the Navy battles and campaigns of the Pacific war from 1943-late 1944 including the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. Narrated by Hollywood star Robert Taylor, who himself was a Naval Aviator, the film is a time capsule view into life aboard and Essex class carrier at war in the Pacific. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #essex #halsey #taskforce38 #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #mastersoftheair #8thairforce #mightyeighth #100thbombgroup #bloodyhundredth #b17 #boeing #airforce wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #oldbreed #1stMarineDivision #thepacific #Peleliu #army #marines #marinecorps #worldwar2 #worldwar #worldwarii #leytegulf #battleofleytegulf #rodserling #twilightzone #liberation #blacksheep #power #prisoner #prisonerofwar #typhoon #hurricane #weather #iwojima#bullhalsey #ace #p47 #p38 #fighter #fighterpilot #b29 #strategicstudying #tokyo #boeing #incendiary #usa #franklin #okinawa #yamato #kamikaze #Q&A #questions #questionsandanswers #history #jaws #atomicbomb #nuclear

USS The Sullivans is berthed now at the Buffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park in New York. We learned a lot about USS The Sullivans when we toured the USS Yorktown in June 2024. It's a very different name for a ship and that's because it was named for five brothers who all died aboard the same ship when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II. Those brothers just may be haunting their namesake. Or maybe there are other spirits here. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of USS The Sullivans. The Moment in Oddity features the Father of the Marathon and This Month in History features the Klondike Gold Rush. Our location was suggested by Erica Merhoff. We just returned from a road trip through the Outer Banks of North Carolina and along our way, we stopped in Charleston, South Carolina. We've seen the USS Yorktown from afar before, but on this trip, we boarded this magnificent aircraft carrier twice. She was one of twenty-four Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II. Today, the carrier is a museum that not only houses the museum of the Medal of Honor Society and artifacts from her service, but there are rumored to be several spirits on board. Join us as we share the history, hauntings and our experiences on board the USS Yorktown. The Moment in Oddity features Henry "Box" Brown and This Month in History features the death of Jean Moulin. US NAVY SAID TO BE BACKING UP JERUSALEM. 4/4: To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and the Crucible of Decision by Admiral James Stavridis USN (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Risk-All-Conflicts-Crucible-Decision/dp/0593297741/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= At the heart of Admiral James Stavridis's training as a naval officer was the preparation to lead sailors in combat, to face the decisive moment in battle whenever it might arise. In To Risk it All, he offers up nine of the most useful and enthralling stories from the US Navy's nearly 250-year history, and draws from them a set of insights that we can all put to use when confronted with fateful choices. Conflict. Crisis. Risk. These words have a distinct meaning in a military context that we hope will never apply identically in our own lives. But at the same time, as Admiral Stavridis shows with great clarity, many lessons are universal. To Risk it All is filled with thrilling and heroic exploits, but it is anything but a shallow exercise in myth burnishing. Every leader in this book has real flaws, as all humans do, and the stories of failure, or at least the decisions that have been defined as such, are as crucial as the stories of success. In the end, when this master class is concluded, we will be better armed for hard decisions both expected and not. 1943 USS YORKTOWN
The USS Lexington, AKA the Blue Ghost, is an aircraft carrier that first entered into service in 1943 during World War II. She, and the approximately 3,000 people who lived and worked on her during the war, were primarily in the Pacific. There, the ship was attacked but never sank — despite claims to the contrary. Now, she's stationed in the bay off of Corpus Christi, Texas.Much like her sister ship the USS Yorktown (episode 83), the Blue Ghost is now a museum where many people tour, work, volunteer — and experience ghostly phenomena. There are reports of shadow figures, disembodied voices, and the eerie feeling of being watched. There are even some who say that full-bodied apparitions appear on the boat; one may even give you a rundown on the mechanics of an engine. In this episode, we discuss the USS Lexington and all the ghostly shenanigans onboard! But first, Zoey is here with her Something Southern: Alabama Man!Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2024/03/12/ep-153-the-girl-dinner-of-ghost-storiesVisit us on Social Media! It's almost time for the Battle on the Deck, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament held on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown right here in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and in this episode, I am joined by the event organizer and founder of Ballersworld Global, Ern Gass! We talk about Ern's hoops background growing up in Sumter, SC that led to him playing at the DI level for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Every good story has adversity, so Ern tells me about what he had to face and how that led to the eventual creation of Ballersworld Global. Then, we get into the event itself! Three videos from the exploration of the Japanese carriers Akagi and Kagi along with a video of the USS Yorktown are on the EV Nautilus YouTube Channel. Here are the latest firmware updates for Shearwater dive computers. Peregrine - V86, Perdix and Perdix AI - V93, Perdix 2 - V95 and the Teric - V23 Commentary Earlier this month we had another local dive shop close here in Connecticut. While there are a number of reasons why this shop closed there is one element that we cannot ignore. Many local dive shop owners are getting older and there will come a time when these dive shop owners will retire. What then? There are two options - find another, younger owner to take over or close the shop. With so many headwinds, running a full service local dive center is complicated. Will the local dive shop model evolve from the high flow business of the 1980s and 90s? Only time will tell. The 2020 Divers Alert Network Annual Diving Report provides information from 2018 on diving related fatalities, injuries as well as information on equipment failures. The report is 92 pages and broken down into five sections and five appendices. DAN started this report in 1988 and plans to release the next Annual Diving Report before the end of 2023. If you are a DAN member you can download a copy and then share it with your dive buddies.
This podcast is about the history of the USS Hornet CV-8 & CV-12 and the making of the movie Midway (2019) with Chuck Myers. Craig and Chuck talk about the history of the USS Hornet CV-8 and CV-12. They covered the pre-war history, how the USS-Hornet came to be and developed over time; the USS-Hornet's role in the famous Doolittle Raid; the USS Hornet's involvement in the battle of Midway; and the USS Hornet's contribution to WW2 until it was sank at the battle of Santa Cruz. After the sinking of the USS Hornet CV-8, she was replaced with the USS Hornet CV-12 that took part in the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign, battle for the Philippines, Volcano and Ryukyu islands campaign and Operation Ten-go.The USS-12 would carry on during the cold war notably taking part in the space race. Craig and Chuck also speak about what actually was the turning point of the Pacific war, what were the significant events that if changed would have dramatically changed the outcome of WW2. Chuck Myers is a retired member of the US Navy having served aboard USS Yorktown, Hornet's sister ship and now works as a Docent at the USS-Hornet Museum. Chuck Myers has also worked as a naval movie consultant for the movie Midway (2019) and discusses how the process was and how involved he was in the making of the movie. Chuck also worked on the film Devotion (2022) and speak a bit about the experience. Many stories of the Battle of Midway highlight the role of cryptography in breaking Japanese codes and the herculean effort to repair USS Yorktown after the battle of the Coral Sea so that she could participate in the battle. In this week's Horns of a Dilemma, author Steven McGregor highlights a less-known but equally important aspect: the SBD Dauntless dive bomber. Dive bombing was a crucial technology during World War II that pushed the bounds of aerodynamics by requiring an aircraft that could maintain a near-vertical dive and withstand the tremendous forces of pulling out, all while carrying bombs weighing up to 1,000 pounds. McGregor tells the story through the pivotal role played by three German-Americans: Chester Nimitz, commander of the Pacific Fleet; Ed Heineman, the designer of the Dauntless; and Norman "Dusty" Kleiss, the pilot whose bombs delivered the fatal blow to the Japanese carrier IJS Kaga. This is a great discussion of a battle that shaped the course of World War II in the Pacific and cemented the importance of the aircraft carrier in American seapower.
Being ON MISSION is not as romantic as it sounds. In fact, a lot of the time its just plain lonely and sometimes worse! "Believe in the Mission" is what one of Tim Tebow's shirts says. Beth Moore, in her address to over 70,000 College age students at the Passion Conference in 2017, stated, “All of you will be affected by the Gospel of Jesus Christ at this conference, but some of you will be Infected. The USS Yorktown, also called the Fighting Lady, is a well-storied ship that served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War before docking near Charleston, South Carolina, as part of the Patriots Point Maritime Museum. This ship is chock-full of history — and, of course, ghosts. There are many, many accounts of paranormal experiences of all kinds: from strange shadows, to full body apparitions, to disembodied footsteps echoing up the stairs for an entire hour.In this episode, we dive into these encounters and examine photographs that might just be evidence of the supernatural. In fact, Zoey and Robin agree that one photo taken by South Carolina ETV is the best photo of a ghost they've ever seen. But first, Zoey is here with a Creature Corner about Indonesia's Kuntilanak (also called the Pontianak in Malaysia).Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/11/01/ep-83-uss-yorktown-full-body-apparitions-and-one-heck-of-a-ghost-photoVisit us on Social Media! While the hit and run carrier raids of February and March tested American carrier doctrine to an extent, and the Pearl Harbor raid as well as Indian Ocean raids tested Imperial Navy doctrine also to an extent, this is the very first time that both navies tested each other's way of doing things, and in the process found things that worked, and things that well…didn't work. Let's dig into it…Talking Points:• What sets off the battle of Coral Sea?o Outline Japanese plans for Operation MO Japanese wanted to seize Port Moresby and all of New Guinea. By doing this, it would provide Japan with both a way to isolate Australia as well as New Zealand from allied supply lines, specifically American supply lines. • Why Rabaul (Opeation R) wasn't good enough This was to be prefaced by the Japanese capture of Tulagi, which is an island we will hear a lot about in the near future. By capturing Tulagi, in the Solomons, the Japanese could patrol the area and the sea lanes to Port Moresby so as to allow their invasion force a free hand. As part of the Port Moresby invasion attempt, the invasion group was to be covered by two separate carrier groups, one which centered around the light carrier Shoho, and another which centered around the fleet carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku.o US intel at Station HYPO and fleet radio unit Melbourne, or FRUMEL decrypt Japanese messages to an extent, and in turn believe that the Japanese will strike the area of Port Moresby, or the northern coast of Australia on or about the first week of May. As a result of this intel, Nimitz deploys the only two carrier task forces at his disposal at this time, those centered around USS Lexington, and USS Yorktown, TF 11 and TF 17 respectively, to stand by the area of the Coral Sea with designs to intercept and destroy the incoming Japanese invasion and support fleets.• On May 1 the two US CV TFs unite under the command of ADM Fletchero May 4, Fletcher detaches CV5 to attack recent Japanese positions on Tulagi CV5's attacks are relatively successful, with damage inflicted on enemy positions and shipping in and around the harbor of Tulagi• US losses are minimal• By May 6, Fletcher is aware that Japanese CVs are in the area, and the Japanese invasion fleet is not far behind. As a result, he detaches ADM Crace's cruisers WITHOUT air cover to block the invasion force.o This is potentially a critical blunder by Fletcher. Crace's CAs could have been blown out of the water by Japanese CVs, as it was, they were attacked three times by Japanese aircraft and once by MacArthur's B17s. Japanese reports stated that they had sunk a BB, damaged a second BB and a CA. Japanese sent no further attacks towards Crace. His vessels survived due to poor Japanese (and American) accuracy as well as his skillful maneuvering. The sighting of the supposed BBs by the Japanese informed the invasion fleet to reverse course Still a horrible decision by Fletcher• First day of the carrier battle May 7• Early on the morning of the 7th, Japanese launch searches to find US CVso Japanese scout planes from Shokaku find US ships and radio ADM Tagaki of 1 CV, 1 CA, and 3 DD. What the Japanese actually sight is the detached oiler Neosho and her escort DD Sims. • How did the Japanese pilot screw this up this bad?• Japanese arrive over oiler and DD, realize their mistake and continue their search, they return and attack and sink Sims and force Neosho to be abandonned• At 0815 a CV5 SBD piloted by John Nielsen finds the Japanese screening force under ADM Goto, which includes light carrier Shoho. o An error in Nielsen's coding made the message read 2 Japanese CVs instead of 1.• Fletcher loses his mind on Nielsen when he lands and clarifies his message Believing this to be the main Japanese CV force, Fletcher launches everything he has. • 93 aircraft are flung at Shohoo 18 F4Fs, 53 SBDs, 22 TBDs from CV2 and CV5• Lexington Air Group, under Bill Ault arrive over Shoho firsto The SBDs attack first, and score at least 2 bomb hits and the TBDs score 5 torpedo hits This is the only real successful TBD attack of WW2• Lex AG executes a hammer and anvil attack and leave Shoho a wreck Talk about Walt Nelson and Ted Wiebe• Yorktown Air Group arrive next and continue to pummel Shoho.o Estimated 11 bombs and 2 more torpedoeso She is barely afloat as US aircraft leave and is gone by 1135• Lexington VB2 CO, Bob Dixon sent a prearranged radio signal back to Fletcher that simply said, “Scratch One Flattop”• Second day of the carrier battle May 8• Both Japanese and US locate each other almost simultaneouslyo US launch first at 0900, Japanese at 0915 Opposing forces actually pass each other on the way to their targets• US attack Japanese firsto The well-coordinated attack of May 7 gives way to the mess of May 8 US aircraft have trouble finding the targets due to squally weather• When they do find them, they can't coordinate their attacks as the previous day Yorktown aircraft under Bill Burch find and attack Shokaku.• The ship is moving radically but is still hit with 2 1,000 pound bombs which puts her flight deck out of action.• Lex Air Group attacks and half of her SBDs find Shokaku and attack, hitting her once, the other half of the attackers from Lex can't find the ship.• All TBD torpedo attacks by both Air Groups miss their targets or the weapons fail to explode• Japanese attack on US fleet• Enemy is picked up 68 nautical miles away by US radaro Poorly executed fighter direction operations positioned the US CAP too low to intercept the incoming enemy strike.• One of the stranger aspects of Coral Sea is that SBDs were utilized as anti-torpedo plane CAPo The assumption was that the Japanese Kate was as slow and sluggish as the TBD, which was obviously false One of the anti-VT pilots was Swede Vejtasa• Talk about Swede's dogfight against Zuikaku aircraft• Despite the best efforts of the US CAP, the Japanese break througho The Kates attack CV5 and miss, yet a hammer and anvil attack against CV2 succeeds CV2 turned like a whale and could not evade the torpedoes. • She takes two on her port side, one ruptures her avgas tanks, which eventually seal her fateo The Vals attack Lex and hit her twiceo The Vals attack Yorktown and hit her severely damaging her as well• Lexington goes downo Avgas fumes spread throughout the ship, it is thought that a spark from a DC powered motor ignited the fumes which eviscerated the internals of the ship, starting uncontrollable fires. The first major explosion kills Lex's main DC party IF WE HAVE THE TIME, LET'S GO THROUGH LEX'S DEATH• Outcomeo Coral sea is technically a draw Seen as US strategic victory in that it is the first time the Japanese are stopped• Port Moresby is not invaded, and the Japanese expansion, at least for now, is checked Tactical defeat for the US Navy• Losing Lex in exchange for Shoho is not acceptable in any wayo Poor FDO operations stationing CAP too low and out of place contributed to losing Lexo Poor design (prewar design) heavily contributed to Lex's losso Poor US coordination on the morning attack against Shokaku and Zuikaku allowed both to escape the battle Sho and Zui would be unavailable for the Midway operation• Sho due to damage and Zui due to heavy aircrew losseso What lessons do we learn regarding future operations?

On Episode 090 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the upcoming release of the Star (Studded) Trek Fan Film YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL! Production on this now legendary 8mm film featuring heavy-hitters George Takei and James Shigeta began in 1985 and abruptly stopped (unfinished) in 1987, 35 years ago as of the posting of this podcast episode in 2022. It centers around the activities of a sister ship of the USS Enterprise, the USS Yorktown, upon which Lt. Commander Hikaru Sulu serves as First Officer. For over 20 years, the unfinished film was put on hiatus. However, in 2010, a Trek fan named John Atkin (who first heard about the film in 1987 via Starlog Magazine Issue #119) contacted producer Stan Woo about the unfinished film, and together they recruited a team of volunteer professionals to help finish the project. The scenes which were never filmed in the 1980s, featuring an attack on the USS Yorktown, were filmed in Vancouver in 2013. Contributors include other Star Trek Fan Film creators like George Kayaian of Starship Antyllus and Todd Haberkorn of Star Trek Continues! So now, the film is FINALLY finished 35 years later! It will be released on YouTube and Vimeo on April 5 of this year, which in the ST universe is known as First Contact Day. The finished film also features a song by Canadian artist RAYNA entitled "Into the Unknown" during the end credits. So to celebrate, the man who teamed up with Stan Woo to complete the film, Mr. John Atkin, is Curtis' very special guest on this landmark 90th episode of the RetroZest podcast! John has a lot of fun info to share about the film and his involvement in its final completion. You're in for a big time treat if your a Trek fan! Incidentally, check out the Potemkin Pictures Star Trek Fan Film The Chronicles of Lanclos, in which Curtis briefly appeared! Team:COACH GARY HERE. THIS IS EPISODE 19 OF THE ‘BRICK AND BLOCK PODCAST' AND FEATURES THE AUDIO VERSION OF MY JANUARY 2020 COLUMN written for MASONRY MAGAZINE. YOU PROBABLY KNOW THE COLUMN AS ‘FULL CONTACT PROJECT MANAGER'. THE TITLE OF THE COLUMN YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAR IS: Looking Forward by Knowing the Past …Remembering the Rest of the Story Team— WARNING: THIS PODCAST RUNS COUNTER TO WHAT MANY COLLEGE PROFESSORS BELIEVE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!NOTE: This article was originally written, a couple of years ago, to provide some history of December 7, 1941. It is even more important this year, as you should hear much talk about that date, now 80 years ago, this December. It's critical you get the whole story, as opponents of Western Civilization may be doing their best to tarnish, trample…and torpedo the reality of the 2nd World War.Look, as you can tell, I'm about fed up with the “Egghead” class, changing language, changing history, changing values, changing beliefs…heck, changing genders, making this stuff up as they go along. It's time for some sanity and perspective, which is what “Coach Gary” is about to deliver. Stand by!All things considered, in some respects, this might be one of the most important podcasts I've ever done. But, then again…all of my podcasts are important! So…dig in!We begin immediately, and by immediately, I mean once I remind everyone that you can find our podcast website at BRICK AND BLOCK PODCAST DOT COM (repeat). As I've said before, I'm a big proponent of having websites that support your business, and I've got an excellent example of one: Masonry Contractor Special Website. You'll see it there. That's what you're looking for. It's mobile friendly, modern, fast, bullet proof, BEAUTIFUL, cutting edge, DONE FOR YOU, and practically free! You'll love this one. Check it out.Of course, if you're not a masonry contractor, we have very similar websites, but in your specialty. So…check it out.OKAY, TEAM. HANG ON, BUCKLE UP… LISTEN UP, AND PREPARE TO MOVE UP. And now, Episode 19Looking Forward by Knowing the Past …Remembering The Rest of the StoryBy Coach Gary Micheloni “Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” (Winston Churchill, 1948 and George Santayana, 1905)For absolute certainty, there will be no shortage of articles and messages this time of year about “20-20 vision” and that sort of thing! But I ask you to invest a few moments right now and look at my little offering, because it just might be super-significant for you in this uncertain world and industry we find ourselves. Stuff always happens but you need to hang in there because ‘the rest of the story' might just be right around the corner… to the part where the cavalry arrives and the good guys win. That's the theme for the New Year because that's my hope and expectation. Check it out.For the past 20+ years now I have been meeting for breakfast with the same group of guys the first Saturday of each month. It is amazing to me the amount of wisdom coming from them, on all sorts of subjects and ideas, and I hope you have the same kind of people in your life. They are among my most important mentors— my coaches. So, when “Coach Mark” approached me and said that our group of guys would be meeting on December 7th next and wondered if I might want to share something about the significance of that day. I agreed, provided we could go into the lessons learned and the leadership attached to that significant day. What does it all mean--for that time, and for ours, going forward?President Franklin D. Roosevelt summed up things this way: “Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan...I regret to tell you that many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu…”Pretty bad stuff, right? But let's not miss “the rest of the story.” Is the cavalry on its way? Is there going to be a ‘rest of the story?' Let's take a look. Those two sentences from FDR were the facts, and they are terrible. But those facts are only part of the story, which is far more profound, much larger, and more significant. The story does not end there. In fact, it doesn't even begin there! Because where it actually begins has everything to do with — not where it ends, but where it is heading. You knowing what that heading is, has everything to do with how your business, community, and family grow, We're talking about the history of our country because it is the driving force of your legacies, be it business, community or family going forward. Do not miss this!In your experience, you know that things often go wrong, “unsolvable” problems present themselves, seemingly impossible issues arise. Things are going along well and then, out of the blue, bad stuff happens. In this case, Pearl Harbor is attacked “out of the blue,” the enemy seeking to destroy the US Pacific Fleet. In fact, on that Sunday morning, 9 US battleships were in port. The enemy thought it had accomplished its mission, but it miscalculated — you'll learn why in a moment. But the lesson here is that life situations, which might cripple the unwitting, will not take you down— provided you understand your legacy, and how critical it is to pass this along to others and that they might do the same. So, let's go to the beginning of the story. What i0s this uniquely American legacy that redeems us from the bad and gets us to the good? Let's start here.America was settled by people seeking freedom of religion, the press, for the right to own property, and a desire to be governed by the rule of law— not ruled according to the dictations and might of kings. In this country, for the first time ever in the history of the world, we solemnly believed and resolved that the king was no longer to be the law. But that law, itself, was to be king. This turned civilization on its head!To make this happen, Americans picked a fight with the mightiest nation on earth at the time, to instill into its people and install into its government, the sanctity that these rights, held by most people, were ‘God-given.' A formal Declaration of Independence was written and then signed by 57 men each pledging, “Our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” It would cost many of them exactly that. In 1776 this Revolution, tenuous at first and unlikely to succeed, overcame the impossible and the miraculous came to pass. Tens of thousands of lives were taken, wounded, or captured to make this a reality. Never forget: this is our legacy. In 1861, a great Civil War was fought to decide the issue of slavery. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing— on paper, at least the slaves in rebelling states. April 9, 1865, the south surrendered. April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated. Over four years, more than 620,000 soldiers from both sides cast ‘the ultimate vote,” as did President Lincoln. The law was settled. At great cost, the nation moved on. Our legacy of freedom was preserved. Fast forward to 1941 and the specter of world war. The US and Japan had ongoing diplomatic negotiations and peace talks up through December 6, in Washington DC. With talks scheduled to continue the following week. Sunday was supposed to be an off day. This now brings us back to the events of December 7th, 1941:7:55 a.m, the first wave of 183 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo bombers attacked Pearl Harbor.8:10 a.m. a 1,800-pound bomb lands in the USS Arizona's forward ammunition magazine. The ship explodes and sinks with 1,000+ men trapped inside.Torpedoes hit the USS Oklahoma with about 400 sailors aboard; she loses balance, rolls to her side and sinks. 8:54 a.m. the second wave of 170 planes attacked. The battle was over before 10:00 a.m.In its wake, 2,403 service members were killed, 1,178 wounded, 169 US Army Air Corps and Navy planes destroyed. 19 vessels were damaged, nearly half of which were sunk, fully or partially. Every battleship in Pearl Harbor had sustained significant damage: the USS Arizona, Oklahoma, California, West Virginia, Utah, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Nevada. Pretty bad stuff, right? Do things get better?Know that all but the Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah were eventually salvaged and repaired so that six battleships were returned to service. The Japanese ambassadors left town on December 8th!December 9, 1941, Americans begin to enlist in record numbers. During the course of the war, over 16 million Americans served, from a US population of 140 million — 11% of all Americans fought in WW2. (By comparison, 1% during the Iraq war.) Every family had a stake in this fight, either in the military or in support of it. (My mom and at least one of my aunts became welders in an aircraft plant!)February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt issues Executive Order 9066, and 110,000 Japanese-Americans are forced to leave their homes and are interred in 10 detention camps until December 1944. April 2, 1942, USS Hornet steams from San Francisco with 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers lashed to her flight deck. The 80 crew members aboard had trained on land-based runways to get airborne within 467 ft (length of the Hornet flight deck). All were volunteers. It was considered to be a suicide mission.April 8, 1942, all 16 bombers, led by Lt. Col. James Doolittle, successfully launched from the Hornet for a surprise air attack on Tokyo by US bombers. All hit targets, doing little damage, but proving to the Japanese that their island was not invulnerable to attack by the U.S. — a huge, needed a psychological boost to the Allies, as the war was going badly. One plane landed in Russia, 15 toward Nationalist China. All ran short on fuel and either crash-landed or crew bailed out. Three crewmen killed, 8 captured, tortured and starved. This bravery is a part of the DNA in our legacy. April 19, 2019, Lt. Richard Cole, last surviving member of this raid, dies at age 103! 77 years plus one day.0May 1942. War going well for Japan, which wanted to get US into a fight for Midway Island in order to lure US aircraft carriers, defeat them, which would ultimately destroy the US Pacific Fleet. (Carriers were much more important to the Fleet than battleships.) May 28th, largest Japanese fleet ever leaves it bases and heads to sea, commanded by Admiral Yamamoto, who is confident of victory but does not know that the US has cracked their intelligence code and is aware of their plans of possible attack on Midway. June 1942, US Admiral Chester Nimitz puts a task force together. Desperately in need of carriers, has to allow USS Yorktown to go to Pearl Harbor for two+ weeks of emergency repairs. But Nimitz has a plan: 1400 shipyard workers move onto the ship, en masse, work around the clock and complete the repairs in 72 hours. She rejoins the task force! The Battle of Midway rages four days, June 4-June 7, 1942. Japan had 4 carriers, 3 cruisers, 12 destroyers, 248 carrier aircraft, and 16 floatplanes. The US had 3 carriers, 8 cruisers, 15 destroyers, 233 carrier aircraft, 127 land-based aircraft, and 16 subs.LOSSES: Japan— 4 carriers sunk; 1 cruiser sunk and 1 damaged; 248 aircraft destroyed, 3,057 KIA, 37 capturedUS— 1 carrier sunk (Yorktown); 1 destroyer sunk (Hammann), 150 aircraft destroyed; 307 service members KIA.Midway was widely considered the turning point of the war and the largest naval battle in history. Japan was unable to replenish its war materials easily, while the US industrial might could supply our needs.February 1, 1943, 442nd Regimental Combat Team created was composed entirely of Japanese-Americans, some of whom had family members in detention camps. Serving in Italy, France, and Germany, its motto was “Go for Broke.” By April 1943, it had a fighting complement of 4,000 men, with some 14,000 total serving overall. In less than two years, its members were awarded 9,486 purple hearts, 4,000 Bronze Stars, 21 of its members were awarded the Medal of Honor. It is the most decorated unit in US military history. A family friend of mine had a brother KIA while she and the rest of her family remained in a camp. Amazing. Sad. True. Part of our legacy as Americans of all stripes. While all of this is going on in the Pacific, the Allies simultaneously and successfully launch the largest amphibious landing in the history of warfare: Operation Overlor2d, also known as D-Day, the landing at Normandy (June 6-August 30, 1944). A few months later, the Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 to Jan 25, 1945).May 8, 1945, VE Day (Victory in Europe) August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Pres. Truman calls for Japan to surrender, warning of further destruction. Japan rejects.August 9, 1945, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki.August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito announced surrender. September 2, 1945, (VJ Day— Victory over Japan) Japan signs unconditional surrender aboard USS Missouri This is who we are. This is why when you get down you know you're going to get back up. Dawn and Billy discuss the history of the USS Yorktown, and touch on our first paranormal investigation!
In this conversation about his memoir and National Geographicspecial on his life, Robert Ballard takes us along his many journeys to find the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Bismarck, Nazi submarine U-166, the USS Yorktown, JFK's PT 109, and two missing nuclear submarines under the cover of searching for the Titanic. Ballard is also a scientist, and he recalls his many important discoveries that include 750°F hydrothermal vents, undersea volcanoes, black smokers, and the confirmation of the theory of plate tectonics. Now the captain of E/V Nautilus, a state-of-the-art scientific exploration vessel rigged for research in oceanography, geology, biology, and archaeology, leads young scientists as they map the ocean floor, collect artifacts from ancient shipwrecks, and relay live-time adventures from remote-controlled submersibles to reveal amazing sea life. For the first time, Ballard gets personal, telling the inside stories of his adventures and challenges as a midwestern kid with dyslexia who became an internationally renowned ocean explorer. Here is the definitive story of the danger and discovery, conflict and triumph that make up his remarkable life. Among his many honors he holds the Explorers Club Medal, the National Geographic Hubbard Medal, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal.
The Battle for Hell's Island: How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save Guadalcanal by Stephen L. Moore John Batchelor interviews author. http://JohnBatchelorShow.com/ About the book- The Battle for Hell's Island: How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save Guadalcanal by Stephen L. Moore November 1942: Japanese and American forces have been fighting for control of Guadalcanal, a small but pivotal island in Japan's expansion through the South Pacific. Both sides have endured months of grueling battle under the worst circumstances: hellish jungles, meager rations, and tropical diseases, which have taken a severe mental and physical toll on the combatants. The Japanese call Guadalcanal Jigoku no Jima—Hell's Island. Amid a seeming stalemate, a small group of U.S. Navy dive bombers are called upon to help determine the island's fate. The men have until recently been serving in their respective squadrons aboard the USS Lexington and the USS Yorktown, fighting in the thick of the Pacific War's aerial battles. Their skills have been honed to a fine edge, even as injury and death inexorably have depleted their ranks. When their carriers are lost, many of the men end up on the USS Enterprise. Battle damage to that carrier then forces them from their home at sea to operating from Henderson Field, a small dirt-and-gravel airstrip on Guadalcanal. With some Marine and Army Air Force planes, they help form the Cactus Air Force, a motley assemblage of fliers tasked with holding the line while making dangerous flights from their jungle airfield. Pounded by daily Japanese air assaults, nightly warship bombardments, and sniper attacks from the jungle, pilots and gunners rarely last more than a few weeks before succumbing to tropical ailments, injury, exhaustion, and death. But when the Japanese launch a final offensive to take the island once and for all, these dive-bomber jocks answer the call of duty—and try to perform miracles in turning back an enemy warship armada, a host of fighter planes, and a convoy of troop transports. A remarkable story of grit, guts, and heroism, The Battle for Hell's Island reveals how command of the South Pacific, and the outcome of the Pacific War, depended on control of a single dirt airstrip—and the small group of battle-weary aviators sent to protect it with their lives. How did the USS Yorktown get repaired so fast to be at the battle? Why was famous Hollywood director John Ford at the battle? What was the importance of the Aleutian islands campaign and how did aboriginal Aleuts get involved? What was the Akutan Zero fighter? What was Nagummo's dilemma? What role did submarines play in the battle of Midway? How did anti-air guns on either side of the battle influence its outcome? John Hancock grew up in Georgia shooting quail, so becoming a gunner aboard the USS Yorktown in World War II came pretty naturally to him. In 1942, Hancock served in the first carrier battle in world history and later that year fought at the pivotal Battle of Midway, although he was forced to abandon ship as the Japanese sunk the Yorktown. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Hancock describes what combat was like for him, shares his memories of Midway, and walks us through his service at Leyte. He also tells us about transitioning from naval gunner to fighter pilot and targeting Japanese kamikaze planes.

Bob Coggin was just back from serving in Vietnam as a diver in an underwater demolition team when he got his next assignment from the Navy: train to possibly recover Apollo 8. The first manned spacecraft to leave the earth's atmosphere and orbit the moon would soon splash down in the Pacific Ocean. Coggin understood the importance of the astronauts' mission. But he didn't think much of his own role. "It was a big deal back then, but we couldn't understand why it was such a big deal," he says. "It was just another day kind of thing really." The day was December 27, 1968. Coggin's team was one of three poised to secure the space capsule in the predawn hours and assist the astronauts to safety aboard an aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown. The then 25 year-old watched from a helicopter, as Apollo 8 seared through the earth's atmosphere, glowing fiery shades of orange and red against a dark sky. It was a mind blowing sight, lasting mere seconds. "We had cameras around our necks and didn't

The Battle Of Midway To learn more and watch this video visit Public Access America https://youtu.be/FM6CTalWAWA Location: Midway Atoll 1,300 miles northwest of Oahu Date: June 4-7, 1942 Background: One of Japan’s main goals during WWII was to remove the United States as a Pacific power in order to gain territory in East Asia. Japan hoped to defeat the US Pacific Fleet and use Midway as a base to attack Pearl Harbor, securing dominance in the region. The Battle Early morning on June 4th, aircraft from four Japanese aircraft carriers attacked and severely damaged the US base on Midway. Unbeknownst to the Japanese, the US carrier forces were just to the east of the island and ready for battle. After their initial attacks, the Japanese aircraft headed back to their carriers to rearm and refuel. While the aircraft were returning, the Japanese navy became aware of the presence of US naval forces in the area. TBD Devastator torpedo bombers and SBD Dauntless dive bombers from USS Enterprise, USS Hornet and USS Yorktown were sent to attack the Japanese fleet. The Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu, were hit, set ablaze, and abandoned. Hiryu (the only surviving carrier) responded with two waves of attacks—both times bombing the USS Yorktown, leaving her severely damaged, but still afloat (she would later be sunk on June 7th by a Japanese submarine). That afternoon, a USS Yorktown scout plane located the Hiryu and the USS Enterprise sent dive bombers to attack. The attack left the Hiryu burning and without the ability to launch aircraft. Over the next two days, the US Navy and US forces on Midway continued their attacks, forcing the Japanese to abandon the battle and retreat to Japan. The Japanese lost approximately 4,800 men, four carriers, one cruiser, and hundreds of aircraft, while the United States lost approximately 307 men, one carrier, one destroyer, and over 100 aircraft. This critical US victory stopped the growth of Japan in the Pacific and put the United States in a position to begin shrinking the Japanese empire through a years-long series of island-hopping invasions and several even larger naval battles.

In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio: In The Dark, we talk with Bruce Orr, paranormal investigator, retired criminal investigator, founder of Lost in Legend, and author of Ghosts of the USS Yorktown and other paranormal titles. Bruce is a retired criminal investigator turned author. After retiring, he combined his love for investigation and research with his love for history and writing. His first book, Six Miles to Charleston is an in-depth look at the facts behind the legend of John and Lavinia Fisher, who were accused of robbing and murdering their guests at an Inn outside of Charleston, SC, in 1819. Bruce has also written Haunted Summerville, SC and Ghosts of Berkeley County, SC in which he covers the legends and lore that he grew up with in the South Carolina Lowcountry. In these books, he interviews the witnesses, examines the locations, and even relates a few of his own experiences. In Ghosts of the USS Yorktown, The Phantoms of Patriots Point, Bruce tackles the paranormal tales associated with the World War II-era aircraft carrier since its arrival at Patriots Point Maritime Museum. As a result of multiple historical and paranormal projects, Bruce founded "Lost in Legend." The focus of his organization is to research and promote the facts behind the folklore and the history behind the hauntings. Often this creates new and increased interest in the legends they explore. This has led to Bruce being sought as a speaker and lecturer and also as a consultant on the area's legends, folklore, and paranormal residents. An avid diver, Bruce often incorporates scuba diving into his research and book projects. He is often involved in historical Maritime Archaeological projects with the Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology as a volunteer diver. His projects can be followed on Facebook at Lost in Legend.Air Date: March 19, 2015 Topic: Paranormal Investigation, Ghost Ship, USS Yorktown Guest: Bruce Orr Hosts: Karen Frazier and Chuck Gotski Producer: Cheryl Knight
