M. Night Shyamalan as of 2024 is now hit or miss with his movies. There hasn't been any further “classics” in his filmography over the last two decades, but he's had some fairly enjoyable productions. His latest is called TRAP (2024) and has received a large theatrical release from Warner Brothers Pictures.Riley (Ariel Donoghue) and her dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) are attending a Lady Raven concert in Philadelphia. When Cooper notices that a very large and present law enforcement attendance, he asks a vendor what's up. There was a tip that the serial killer known as the Butcher is in attendance. Soon a cat-and-mouse game begins where everyone, including the talent on stage, has to make decisions that will save their own skins as well as others.Shyamalan directs from a script that he wrote. Besides an absolutely fantastic performance by Josh Hartnett, the film also stars Hayley Mills, Saleka Night Shyamalan, and Alison Pill. With an interesting premise, based off the mixed reviews by audiences and writers alike, the question of its success depends on the individual viewer. Your co-hosts take a look at this recently released theatrical feature and give their thoughts.

Julia Sirmons joins us to discuss SO THIS IS PARIS, Lubitsch's 1926 sex farce and pseudo-remake of THE MERRY JAIL. We cover the ways that Lubitsch treats feminine desire and fantasies, the film's slightly tenuous connection to its titular location, the kaleidoscopic party scene, Lubitsch's minimal use of title cards, communication and miscommunication, the politics of truth and secrets, the unconventional cyclical structure of Lubitsch's comedies, and, most importantly of all, the messy-but-inevitable divorce of Ernst Lubitsch and Warner Brothers Pictures! Welcome to Churubusco, Indiana, Turtle City, USA!  Named after the location of a battle during the Mexican-American War, the area was originally two towns that bordered each other across a railroad track.  In the 1840s, both towns grew large enough to have their own post office, and the Postmaster General required the towns to apply for a joint post office.  Because both of the towns original names were already taken by other Indiana towns, they settled on Churubusco with the thought that no other town would have that name.  The town hosts the oldest continually held festival in Indiana, Turtle Days.  The festival is based around the local legend of the Beast of Busco, also know as Oscar the Turtle.  Oscar is said to be a 500 lbs snapping turtle that hides in a local lake.  The festival includes a parade, carnival, and turtle races.  The town was also home to Warner Brothers Pictures co-founding executive Paul Chase.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Busco!

This week on On Story we'll hear from veteran screenwriters John Lee Hancock, Brian Helgeland and Robin Swicord on the process of creating compelling characters. And later, award-winning writer and director Brenda Chapman discusses how female perspective, a love of art, and an understanding of flawed characters influenced her writing in the animated classics The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, and Brave.   Characters are the emotional anchor for all great stories. No matter how intricate the plot, well-developed characters are crucial ingredients for engaging an audience and encouraging them to invest in a story's journey. I spoke with a group of veteran screenwriters about their process of crafting compelling characters at the Austin Film Festival. John Lee Hancock is a director, writer and producer most known for his work on The Blind Side, A Perfect World and his latest film The Little Things. After a brief hiatus, the podcast has returned with a breakdown and dissection of the latest Looney Tunes News across all franchises including news of a rebooted Tiny Toons; titled Tiny Toons Looniversity! and Animaniacs on Hulu! I'm joined by my wife and massive Disney fan Sabina Graves (@ThatLadyGraves on Instagram and @SabinaHasNoR on Twitter) who brings so extra excitement in our discussions surrounding the newly announced animated shows from Warner Animation! According to The Hollywood Reporter, we will be seeing a big push for pre-school audiences and we're excited about watching them with our future kids! Bugs Bunny Builders (working title) – Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and built on the solid comedic foundation of the iconic Looney Tunes, Bugs Bunny Builders brings the wackiness, humor and slapstick we’ve grown to love to a new preschool audience. At ACME Construction Company Bugs Bunny and Lola Bunny manage a crew of builders that, quite frankly, should not be anywhere near a construction site. However, by working together as a team, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety and others use their tools and wild vehicles to pull off some of the looniest construction jobs ever. Tweety Mysteries (working title) – Tweety Mysteries is a hybrid live-action/animated adventure from Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Television that follows a curious tween investigative journalist and podcaster named Sydney and her sidekick Tweety bird. Working together the pair must solve various local mysteries in their small, quirky Washington state town. Space Jam 2 - X-Box Game Contest and 3 seconds of Footage Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is a bonkers mash of zany comedy with an Austin Powers bend! Highly recommend checking it out if you love 90's era comedies.  Lola Bunny in the Looney Tunes Show voiced by Kristen Wiig. Dave Baer has passed away at 70. He animated Mickey Mouse in this classic scene from Who Framed Roger Rabbit; which is a seminal moment in animation as two legends finally shared the screen together. In this episode, we discuss our own history with the movie, what this movie is like through the eyes of parents and what it means to struggle in faith. How that journey of struggle can yield some of the most interesting of journeys. Parvez and Omar are joined by screenwriter and director Kamran Pasha, to discuss The Exorcist (1973).  In addition to being a favorite film of both Parvez's and Kamran's, The Exorcist has had a significant influence on popular culture and has received critical acclaim, with several publications having regarded it as one of the greatest horror films of all time. We hope you enjoy this discussion, part of a recurring series of recordings focused on movies and film. Kamran Pasha was one of the first Muslim filmmakers to succeed in Hollywood.  He recently worked as writer-producer on Showtime Network’s drama series set in the American military prison at Guantanamo Bay, directed by Oliver Stone.  Previously, Kamran served as a writer and co-producer of Showtime’s Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated series “Sleeper Cell,” about a Muslim FBI agent who infiltrates a terrorist group.  Kamran has also served as a writer and producer on television shows such as “Reign,” “Nikita” and “Roswell, New Mexico” on the CW, and “Kings” and “Bionic Woman” on NBC. He also served as head writer for the “Tron: Uprising” animated series on Disney XD. Kamran’s movie career launched when he sold his first feature script to Warner Brothers Pictures, an historical epic on the love story behind the building of the Taj Mahal.  He is currently developing a movie on the famed Sufi poet Rumi, as well as a feature film about Ibn Battuta, which follows the adventures of an Arab traveler who journeyed from Morocco to China in the 14th century. Kamran is a published novelist as well.  In 2009, Simon & Schuster published “Mother of the Believers,” a novel showing the rise of Islam from the eyes of Prophet Muhammad’s wife Aisha.  His second novel, “Shadow of the Swords,” follows the conflict between Richard the Lionheart and the Muslim leader Saladin for control of Jerusalem during the Crusades. Kamran holds a BA and an MBA from Dartmouth College, a JD from Cornell Law School, and is an alumnus of the MFA Producers Program at UCLA Film School.

Police brutalities, racism and raical injustice are common conversation for us today. Back in the 1980s, it was revolutionary for five young gents out of Compton, California who experienced this one a daily basis. Dr. Dre, Easy E, Ice Cube, MC Ren & DJ Yella were known to the world as N.W.A. Their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, placed racial injustice and police brutality right in the front conversation. As they say in the movie, “our art is a reflection of our reality.” The band who redefined the rap back back in the late 80s, is back to their story on the big screen. In this episode of Victims and Villains, we are breaking down the 2015 biopic, Straight Outta Compton. Discussing everything from hip hop being art, racial profiling, police brutality and more. History has a tendency to repeat itself. What we’re currently experiencing now with civil unrest in the Black Lives Matter movement echoes throughout history. For Generation X, and to a lesser extent the Baby Boomer generation, there was a revolution taking place before their very eyes. Men like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin and Malcolm X were pioneers for civil rights for the black community. The latter, in Malcolm X, had his life grace the big screen in 1992 – thanks to director, Spike Lee, and a transformative performance from Denzel Washington.
