I thought it would be fun to do a year-in-review of the music of 2024 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we're constantly sharing music with each other. James first came on the show in 2020, when we did a similar review of the music from that wild quarantine year when artists weren't touring and we all missed live shows. Fast forward to 2024, and we chat about what we've noticed over the last five years, including the changes in the music industry, trends we've seen, and of course, what we've had on repeat.James, a Bob Dylan super-fan, talks about his evolving tastes, new genres, and how pop and hyperpop have influenced his music choices. He also shares his insights on the current music scene and the role of streaming, social media, and live performances.James is an author, poet, artist, and founder of Sunflower Club, a global community dedicated to conscious creativity. He's the author of several books, including The Art of You, which we discussed last year. IntroductionLIVE from your ESG sad sack, it's a Business Pants Friday Show here at November 15th Studios, featuring AnalystHole Matt Moscardi. On today's weekly wrap up: The government is getting its own Facebook Oversight Board; Meritocracy is not the name of a new WWF character; and food with a 36-month shelf life is still bad for youOur show today is being sponsored by Free Float Analytics, the only platform measuring board power, connections, and performance for FREE.Story of the Week (DR):Trump taps Musk, Ramaswamy to oversee ‘drastic' changes to U.S. governmentDepartment of Government Efficiency–nicknamed DOGE after the cryptocurrency preferred by the Tesla CEO–its stated purpose is to radically shrink the size of the federal government by streamlining bureaucracy, eliminating jobs and shaving up to a third off of the $6.75 trillion fiscal budget.Conservatives have advocated starving the bureaucracy of resources ever since Ronald Reagan transformed the party with his famous 1986 slogan “the nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I'm from the government, and I'm here to help'.”How DOGE will exactly operate remains at present unclear. Nor has there been an official explanation as yet regarding oversight, as Trump has confirmed it will operate outside of the executive branch but under his authority. This means it could be little more than a glorified advisory body or it could wield considerable influence, depending on how much favor it carries with the President-elect. Even Exxon Mobil Is Horrified by Trump's Climate PlanAs the New York Times reports, Exxon CEO Darren Woods warned that withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement would greatly weaken our global efforts to curb carbon emissions — a grim irony, given the fact that he represents one of the biggest contributors to global warming in the world."We need a global system for managing global emissions. Trump and his administrations have talked about coming back into government and bringing common sense back into government. I think he could take the same approach in this space."Twitter Is Getting Absolutely Destroyed as Users Flee to Rivals Run by People Who Haven't Lost Their MindsBluessky saw a major influx of well over a million new users in the week following the presidential election, growing from just 9 million users in September to 15 million.Bluesky even became the number one free app on Apple's App Store this week, beating out Meta's Threads — which is also spiking in apparent user count, though in a slightly more dubious fashion.Meanwhile, X-formerly-Twitter was in the news this week after British newspaper The Guardian announced it would be leaving the Elon Musk-owned platform, which has quickly devolved into a cesspool of hate speech and disinformation since his acquisition.Jamie Dimon on not getting a job under Trump: 'I haven't had a boss in 25 years and I'm not about ready to start' MMGoodliest of the Week (MM/DR):DR: The Onion Buys Alex Jones's Infowars Out of BankruptcyThe Onion said its bid was sanctioned by the families of the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, who in 2022 won a $1.4 billion defamation lawsuit against Mr. Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems.MM: Kraft Heinz discontinues school Lunchables MMWhile the Lunchables were said to be tailored to meet school standards, CR found that they contained high levels of sodium—even higher than those kits found in the grocery store, as well as potentially troubling levels of phthalates and heavy metals. CR said the products contained between 460 to 740 milligrams per serving, or “nearly a quarter to half of a child's daily recommended limit for sodium.” Amy Keating, a dietician for CR, explained that Lunchables are “highly processed” and that processed meat “has been linked to an increased risk of some cancers.” Assholiest of the Week (MM):Meritocracy DRSure, Matt Gaetz, Vivek, Elon, Tulsi Gabbard, etc… but we're gaslit everywhere to believe meritocracy is what drives markets and appointmentsFrom this week: Felicia Williams Joins NeoGenomics Board of DirectorsWilliams brings experience as the interim CFO of Macy's (after it declared bankruptcy) and experience at Coca-Cola to the board of… oncological DNA test company NeoGenomicsHere's a fun one - in our database - Apple is tops on the list of US large cap companies that ignores the core knowledge ever other company in its industry has - 20% of directors in the Technology Hardware industry have Computer Science backgrounds. See The Upside - Uplifting conversations about real life after divorce
I LOVE my Hermes bracelet. My girlfriends gave it to me on my birthday and it symbolizes so much more than the beautiful piece of jewelry that it is. To mean it feels like friendship, connection, my old life in Florida, good wine, boat rides, raising our kids, long phone calls, shopping trips to Sassy Boutique, tennis matches on clay courts, days at the beach, drinks at the tiki bar, great memories, laughter, and girlfriends who have stood by me through anything and everything and make me feel like coming home every single time I visit. In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Aaron Ahuvia, professor at University of Michigan at Dearborn, who is also author of the book The Things We Love and all around world renowned expert on psychology of brand love. We start our convo talking about our connection to things, which was the original intention of the interview, but we end with healing stories and discussion about the importance of compassion for ourselves. Of course. It always goes there, doesn't it? Some highlights we get into:What luxury brands really mean to us and what they symbolize to othersWhy only the bravest men will drive mini vansHow people fall in love with each other and how we present ourselves in the dating worldWhat are the similarities in the way we love people and the way we love thingsWhat the best brands invoke within usWhy loving the things you already own is the key to happiness What you really learn about yourself by realizing/noticing what things you loveHow to clear out the energy in items that an ex gave youOur ability to be fluid in our beliefs and in lifeA better way to view mistakes than self criticismI thought this conversation was going to be about love and the difference between loving people and things. Wow, was I wrong. It was a deep dive into SOOO much more. We're two days into 2023 and the theme for us has been . . . meh. That 'new year, new me' rhetoric gets old fast. In this episode we're talking about why moving into a new year can feel hard, especially for grievers. That means musing about what happiness is (and isn't), the appeal (and risks) of a 'fresh start', and living a 'because of' life instead of an 'in spite of' life. So here we go Revelation 8:1-5The PassageWhen the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings,[a] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. The List:1. How did we make our first million? There is no rule that you have to make your first million in a certain amount of time or by a specific age. We started in 2008. We made our first million with the purchase of 56 units. Listen in to hear what gave us the confidence to make our first acquisition of that size. Download your Free Private Lending Report here: www.FreedomCapitalInvestments.com/lendingDownload your Freedom # worksheet here: www.FreedomCapitalInvestments.com/worksheetClick on the Social Media links below and listen in on our Private Group Conversations about how to achieve Financial Freedom through a consistent pipeline of passive income investments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/freedomthroughpassiveincome https://www.linkedin.com/groups/14048250 —————————————————————————We talked about our very first million recently on our 56-unit story part two when we went into the numbers, "The Chedda," as Flip put it. That is where we made our first million. We built Freedom Real Estate Group which eventually turned into six companies and that essentially allowed us the power and the vertical integration of those companies to be able to purchase the 56-unit apartments. The only reason we have the confidence to do that is because of everything we built up to them. The apartments themselves were the entity or the product that produced the first million dollars, which might end up being multiple millions. We're waiting to do the refinance to really find out what the numbers turn out to be. Chedda! But it's our first nonetheless, that will actually reach that mark. But now that we are investing in syndications and more apartments we thought, "Huh, I wonder how close to number two and number three are going to actually be in, what that's really going to look like." Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways It will take about 6 minutes to settle into work and focus: unless you are very stressed or excited about something, don't expect to be immediately focused the moment you sit/stand to workAs you optimize the workspace, the latency period (the time it takes to get focused) will decreaseIn the first part of your day (0-9 hours after waking), bright lights make for maximum alertness – use bright overhead lights and blue light or ring light in front of youOur cognition follows our visual environment: for detailed analytic work (ideally in Phase I 0-9 hours after waking), work in a lower ceiling environment or put in a hoodie or hat to restrict visual field; for Phase II (9-16 hours after waking creative work), work in high ceiling room or outdoorsTo be alert and maintain an optimal level of alertness, keep the screen or book at nose level or slightly higher up – ideally while standing or seatedFor every 45 minutes you are focused on something, take a walk or relax your eyes and dilate your gaze for 5 minutes to avoid fatigueDepending on the day, background noise can be a stimulant or hindrance to focus – but generally, the incessant humming of air conditioners or heaters can increase mental fatigue and decrease cognitive performanceTip to manage office interruptions: if someone enters your office or workspace, acknowledge their presence but don't shift your body or reorient yourselfWe weren't designed to sit all day, but we shouldn't stand all day either – a combination of about 50/50 is bestActive workstations (e.g., cycle or treadmill) can improve attention and cognition for some tasksRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, I discuss ways to set up your workspace to optimize productivity, focus and creativity. I discuss how to adjust light, physically arrange your work environment, and leverage body posture to enhance productivity. Additionally, I explore how to shift your work environment for particular types of tasks. Moreover, I review the role of body movement in the workspace. I also discuss sound-based tools that can either enhance or diminish cognitive functioning (the ability to focus on deep work). I describe a particular frequency of binaural beats that studies show can be used to enhance memory and recall. This episode covers quality peer-reviewed findings practical tools anyone can use, regardless of budget, in order to optimize their workspace to achieve heightened levels of productivity, increased alertness and focus, and creativity. Jon and Justin have a free and frank conversation about the law, the gospel, and sanctification. Oftentimes, the law and the gospel are confused. The law is relativized. The gospel is made to sound hard. And sanctification sounds terrible. This isn't how it should be. The guys consider the work of Christ in fulfilling the law as a covenant of works, the freedom that Christ has secured for us, and how God's law and work of sanctification are great things for the believer. Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk about good works. There are many good works emphasized in the church today that are nowhere to be found in the Scriptures. Today we talk about the top 8 mistakes that PT Business owners make. 1) Not Having Clear Goals and WhyWhere so you want to be in five years? If you don't know where you're going, you'll never get there. I want to know your goals, how much money do you want to make? When do you want to retire? Who do you want to serve? What problems do you want to solve? How much time do you want to be working? 2) Making it perfectWe were trained to get A's, but you have to shift yourself away from that student or employee mindset. Being perfect is keeping you from taking action. Take imperfect action so you can get it done. Then you can go back and make improvements. Let perfection drive your decisions but take imperfect action. Stop waiting for it to be done, just put the ball in play. 3) Making it all about youOur egos are fragile. They try to protect themselves. You need to stop that and look outward. Drop the ego and stop trying to prove yourself. If you can create a vision bigger than yourself, then you can do incredible things. team, time treating 4) Not being in a communityYou are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Think about community, not competition. Who are you going to approach if you have a question or you're struggling if you don't have a community? 5) Always focusing on getting more new patientsYou need to focus on your sales process, systems and nurturing your current and former patients/clients. Client acquisition is not the only pressing issue in your business. What's happening with the patients who are already here? Sales ins't about being pushy, it's about asking the right questions. 6) Stop when they feel resistanceResistance is a sign that you need to keep moving forward! When it hurts, that means you're growing. You just need to keep taking one step of a time to see the growth that's around the corner. 7) Going it alone “I'm smart enough, I can figure this out all by myself.” That's the ego talking. Asking help is one of the bravest things you can do, and it's just going to move you forward even faster. Don't reinvent the wheel, make the wheel better. 8) Not working with a coachEvery successful athlete you know was coached. To get out of PT school you had many teachers, clinical instructors, and “coaches”. Why do you expect something different from business? PT school did not train you to become a successful business owner. A good coach doesn't do things for you, they give you tools and help yo create a plan. They share their experience. The people who get the most from coaching are quick to ask questions, quick to take action, and share their wins and loses. These are the common mistakes I see people make. But you can avoid them by knowing your why and taking your ago out of the equations. Find a group, a community, a coach to help you along the way and provide the positive mindset you need. Go brain dump all of your ideas and then focus on the one thing that will make the biggest difference in your business. The digital accessibility umbrella is broadDigital accessibility means different things to different people. Most people, on hearing the term, think of people with disabilities, such as being deaf or blind. But our two experts, Nic Steenhout and Carie Fisher, make it clear the digital accessibility umbrella encapsulates much more. It also includes people who:Have ADHD or other cognitive issues — such as with memory, concentration or information processingAre accessing digital information via different technology — such as mobile, or older browsersMay be accessing the internet with slower connectionsAre colorblindAre non-native English speakersNic Steenhout sums it up, “Regardless of the format, digital accessibility all comes down to the same thing — making sure that what we're building is workable, perceivable, understandable, and operable by people with disabilities, and everybody else as well."Digital accessibility benefits everyone, including youOur experts also make the point that digital accessibility is not necessarily limited to the group it's intended for; what is beneficial for one group can benefit another. Nic gives an example, “Plain language and transcripts are easier to understand for people that have cognitive impairments, but they also benefit non-native English speakers.”Nic adds that by factoring accessibility into your site, you broaden your audience as well. “Are people accessing your site through a keyboard, a mouse, Speech Input, Alexa? You don't know. And because you don't know, you have to plan for all that.”Make your content more accessible on the frontend and backendMaking room for accessibility requires a dose of both imagination and empathy; as Nic points out, “We're all only temporarily abled.” On the frontend, our experts highlight suggestions for putting yourself in someone else's shoes and improving your site's accessibility. Use proper markup.Throttle down your bandwidth.Look at your site in an older version of a browser.Unplug your mouse, turn off your trackpad, and spend the day working only with your keyboard. They have suggestions for the backend too:Write clean, readable code Comment your code.Update and organize your documentation.Read the web content accessibility guidelines to find out how you can make your site more accessible for everyone.Platform.shLearn more about us.Get started with a free trial.Have a question?
