This episode will cover a tragic event that took place in July of 1954 in Chestertown, MD.  This event brought to life the dangers that those who work in manufacturing plants, especially when explosives are involved, face every day.  It will also demonstrate why accident investigations are so important and what happens when those investigations fall short of a resolution, leaving everyone who works in those industries at the mercy of a hidden danger.   Photo Credit -  Baltimore News-Post, Harold Spicer   Link to YouTube Music page (formerly Google Podcasts)  Danger on Delmarva Pod via YouTube Music    Support the Podcast: Paypal  Buy Me A Coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rondajeffe9    Danger on Delmarva https://www.facebook.com/DangeronDelmarva  or search for @dangerondelmarva on Facebook https://twitter.com/DangeronD?s=09   DangerinDelaware@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/DangeronDelmarva  or search for @dangerondelmarva on Facebook https://twitter.com/DangeronD?s=09 Danger on Delmarva - YouTube   Sources: DISASTERS: Rockets over Chestertown - TIME   '54 explosion recalled, graphic accounts given | Kent County | myeasternshoremd.com   Chestertown, Maryland - Wikipedia    Kent County    NY Times 7/17/54    tetrol - Wiktionary, the free dictionary   DHSS FAQ   https://www.chestertownvfc.org/gallery/detail/39826    The Salisbury Times 2/10/60

What's this? I enjoy finding out about things. Now I'm retired (I have been for 14 years), I have time to research subjects I find interesting. So I do! The HPR project is going through a phase where the queue can get very low, so I thought having a subject where I could fire off short shows from time to time would help with this. Maybe we can make a series where others who like the idea can contribute when the mood takes them! My plan is to keep details to a minimum and provide links to sources of more information if you're someone who likes to dig deeper! TIL 1 - is it learnt or learned? I discovered that both are acceptable. Both are the past tense (and past participle) of the verb "to learn": learnt is an older form which is more common in British English learned is more common in US English, and is becoming more popular in the UK Links Grammarist: Learned vs. learnt BBC Ask About English TIL 2 - the French word for piggy bank I watch a YouTube channel from a Canadian woodworker who produces English and French versions of his episodes. His latest one is about making a wooden piggy bank, or tirelire in French. I learnt French at school (though I wasn't much good at it), but have never come across this word. My questions are: Where does it come from? How do you say it? The Wiktionary page below has answers to both. It's of onomatopoeic origin (representing the rattling of coins). There's audio on the page showing how to say it (as well as the IPA version [International Phonetic Alphabet], see below). Links YouTube channel - The Woodpecker: L'gosseux d'bois EP 305 - Une tirelire en bois The Woodpecker EP 305 - A wooden piggybank Wiktionary: tirelire TIL 3 - how to pronounce IPA coded words I actually learnt about this a while ago, but I thought now would be a good time to share. The IPA form of tirelire is /tiʁ.liʁ/ (I included the enclosing slash delimiters which aren't part of the IPA but have significance; see the IPA Wikipedia page for details). I have seen these symbols for years but have never managed to decode them reliably. A few months ago I wondered how to deal with them reliably (and easily). There are many sites offering to transcribe English (and other languages) to IPA, a few of which are free. I only found one that would attempt to speak IPA, and that is IPA Reader. Paste the IPA into the form, select a reader voice, and click "Read". Some of the voices seem a bit odd. I settled on "Brian" for British English, and it seems fine. The Berean Manifesto
S4EP12 - On the Seventh Day

The Berean Manifesto

Summary Pastor Bill and Pastor Newms discuss the chapter breakdown of the bible, stating that it is often split up like bad television, with no real reason for it. They acknowledged the need for it in order to make it easier for churches and groups to talk about, but were still frustrated by it. They then moved on to discuss Genesis two, which Pastor Bill noted should technically be the end of chapter one. They then discuss the poetic implications and deeper meanings behind the words of Genesis one, before moving on to talk about the start of chapter two. Pastor Bill and Pastor Newms discuss the translation of Genesis 2:1-3, which states that God completed His work on the seventh day and rested, declaring it holy. Pastor Newms mentioned the Greek Old Testament, which is the one Paul used when he wrote the New Testament, reads that God had completed His work on the sixth day and rested on the seventh day. However, the majority of manuscripts say that God completed His work on the seventh day and rested on the seventh day. Pastor Newms suggested that the NASB translation bridges the gap between the two translations. Pastors Bill and Newms discussed the idea of God resting on the seventh day. They looked at two different manuscripts that present the idea differently, but are not contradictory. The first one Sez that God finished his work on the sixth day and then rested on the seventh day, while the other one Sez that he completed his work by resting on the seventh day. They also discussed a conversation they had with a Muslim gentleman who scoffed at the idea that God would need to rest. Pastor Bill explained that the Bible does not say that God needed to rest, but that he chose to rest. The conversation discusses God resting on the seventh day, as described in Exodus 30:17. Pastor Bill explains that the Sabbath is not a legalistic observance, but rather a day of rest and refreshment to help people reset and refocus after six days of work. He further explains that research has shown that a day of rest is essential for the human mind in order to prevent it from schisming. The day of rest is an opportunity to reset and recharge in order to do one's best work. [0:00:07]  Pastor Newms: You haven't said hello and welcome. This is going to get edited out. [0:00:12]  Pastor Bill: Oh, man. Hello, and welcome to season four, episode twelve of the Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the Modern Christian. I'm Pastor Bill, and Pastor Newms with a roll of toilet paper on top of his head has joined, as always. [0:00:30]  Pastor Newms: Lies. Go back and watch the Twitch. There is not a toilet paper roll on my head. [0:00:34]  Pastor Bill: He took it off as I was doing the intro because he was like, you haven't done the intro yet, so I'm cutting this part out where they're not going to hear you telling them, I've got a toilet paper roll on top of my head. [0:00:44]  Pastor Newms: I never said most of that. [0:00:50]  Pastor Bill: All right, maybe you didn't use all those words exactly. [0:00:54]  Pastor Newms: That's why I said most of that. Some of those words were words I used. All right, Pastor Bill. [0:01:02]  Pastor Bill: All right, pastor Newms, how was starting with your week? [0:01:05]  Pastor Newms: No, I already said it. [0:01:11]  Pastor Bill: How was my week? This was spring break for our kids. [0:01:15]  Pastor Newms: Well, two weeks, really, because we didn't do last week because it was yo mama's birthday and Sez, his birthday, and Groggy's birthday. [0:01:30]  Pastor Bill: I don't remember the week before this last one that we just had. I don't remember it. [0:01:38]  Pastor Newms: I just turned your face off. I didn't turn your face off. No one saw that. [0:01:43]  Pastor Bill: Um, the Gergs Theater competition, they got perfect marks all across the board. All three judges in all categories. [0:01:59]  Pastor Newms: Yay. [0:02:00]  Pastor Bill: They're moving on to what's called bi-district. [0:02:03]  Pastor Newms: Bi-district. [0:02:05]  Pastor Bill: That's called bi-district. [0:02:08]  Pastor Newms: See that right there? That right there is what happens when you have independent school districts and not just counties, where you got to do by districts in order to then have regionals after that. That's insane. You got too many schools in that state. [0:02:25]  Pastor Bill: Technically, it's bi-districts. And the top two schools from each of those go on to state. [0:02:35]  Pastor Newms: They don't just call those regional. [0:02:38]  Pastor Bill: No bi-district. [0:02:40]  Pastor Newms: I hate Texas sometimes your guys' independent school districts are like the bane of everyone else's existence. You all are just special out there. [0:02:53]  Pastor Bill: It's the UIL that administers it all. The University Scholastic League. They organize all the football, everything. And they organize all the education competitions and all the band competitions, all the choir competitions. They organize all that. So they make all those calls. So yeah, I don't know. Yeah. So that happened a week before last, and then this last week was spring break, like I said, for our kids. And you'd think that would make life easier, not having to get up every morning and take the kids to school. But no one grandma wants kids on some days and the other grandma wants things on some days. And I'm running all over town trying to get things done during spring break. Because the kids are wanting to do all kinds of things. I like all that, though, is Hello Fresh was running a Hulu promotion and I was able to get like six meals for four persons per meal for like 90% off because it combined the Hulu promotion with like a first time buyer promotion. And so we ate some really good recipes this week. That was fun. [0:04:28]  Pastor Newms: Okay. [0:04:29]  Pastor Bill: Yeah. So how was your week? [0:04:33]  Pastor Newms: I'm going to do the thing you're never supposed to do and touch your microphone because there's something on it. It looks like a cat hair, and it's driving me batty because it's right out of the corner of my eye. 1 second. I feel like you need to talk. [0:04:43]  Pastor Bill: I'm sitting too high. [0:04:46]  Pastor Newms: I feel like I'm not sitting high. [0:04:48]  Pastor Bill: Enough, like more than my head should be going or something. But if I move my camera, the clock here is going to be in the wrong place. The clock is supposed to be done. [0:05:02]  Pastor Newms: Okay. How was my week? So my two weeks was pretty good. It's been an eventful two weeks. Last weekend we had a church work day during on a Saturday. And that is more how you normally sit. Yes. [0:05:20]  Pastor Bill: And. [0:05:26]  Pastor Newms: It hurt the church work day? Yeah. Just because there's so much I got some physical issues. We all know I've got some physical issues, right? And so, yeah, it was rough. Some of the I worked real hard because it's church work day. So I got in there and was like, get it. And then I was like, get it. And I slightly twisted my knee, which is not uncommon. This isn't like, oh, Newms. Is getting old and injured. No. I've been twisting my knees since I was 14, so it made me stop playing sports. Was knee pain. Knee pain is normal. [0:06:23]  Pastor Bill: Like me spraining my ankles. [0:06:24]  Pastor Newms: Yeah, exactly. Or like Zaydie spraining her stepping wrong and popping her foot. And then she swings her foot around to repop it because she sprained them so many times that they just it's like a pop and lock Barbie. [0:06:39]  Pastor Bill: Pop and lock Barbie. [0:06:42]  Pastor Newms: No, she freaked out her coworkers because it happened the other day and her ankle popped. She goes, oh, that doesn't feel right, and swung it around and popped it and she goes, oh, that feels better. And they're all staring at her like wide eyed and like, this girl's a robot. She just popped her ankle at will to walk straight. I don't even know if she's on right now hearing me call her out because she's done her making dinner. So I don't think she's turned on the live, so ha. She won't even know I'm talking mess about her. He'll tell her. And so that was interesting. So then when you texted me and you were like, let's not have church to allow for oh, she's here. I was wrong. [0:07:26]  Pastor Bill: Your wife was here hearing you talk smack about her. [0:07:28]  Pastor Newms: When you were like, I was actually sitting at the table with Sez, and you were like, let's not let's celebrate birthdays. And I was like Sez, we're not celebrating, so I love you, and I'm going to bed early. He's not listening to us. I can see his screens. He's watching YouTube. Anyway, so that was good. And then this week was busy. Just been very busy. I just feel like I'm just busy all the time right now, and I don't like it, but it's good. We had a close friend of ours mother passed, and so we had went to her funeral in Memphis yesterday to support him. And that's, of course, real emotional because they were super close, so that was rough. And then went out to lunch with friends today, which is also weird because I don't do things like that. So I was emotionally more than drained. And so I just went to bed. When I got home, it's been a day. [0:09:06]  Pastor Bill: I'm up, and I'm headed up there. [0:09:09]  Pastor Newms: Zaydie actually ran to the store, and she comes and I partially hear something, and I'm like, Whatever. No, he has to get up. And then they're coming in my room. [0:09:28]  Pastor Bill: No, you have to get up. [0:09:29]  Pastor Newms: It's this time. And I'm like, so, yeah. So that's what's going on. That's how my week was. Is it your week to read a card or my week? I think it's your week. [0:09:48]  Pastor Bill: It is my week to read a card. And I have my deck here ready to pull one. All right, here we go. How much would someone have to pay you to eat a live spider? [0:10:09]  Pastor Newms: Well, Biggs just threw up in his mouth. Almost guarantee that. [0:10:21]  Pastor Bill: A live spider. [0:10:22]  Pastor Newms: How Biggs of a spider are we talking? Here comes the qualifying questions, where newoms hustle lawyers, way out of everything qualifiers. [0:10:28]  Pastor Bill: Every time you're like, now, you'll see the spider here in question. [0:10:35]  Pastor Newms: So, like, if we're talking, like if we're talking, like, some little, like, spider, we're talking like I do it for you. [0:10:45]  Pastor Bill: Talking about the little tiny ones that you already eat twelve of a year or whatever it is while you're asleep. [0:10:50]  Pastor Newms: See, that's inaccurate. That's not what it is. So that's an average, not a median or a mean. What that means is there's one dude who he's eating them all the time. [0:11:02]  Pastor Bill: He's eating them all the time in his sleep. He lives in the spider den. [0:11:05]  Pastor Newms: Thousands of spiders just go in and out of his mouth every day. So the rest of us, we don't eat any. That's how I take that. Yeah, that's how I process that, because it counts. Australia with us. [0:11:18]  Pastor Bill: You just skew the data until you feel comfortable. [0:11:21]  Pastor Newms: That's right. As Biggs says, there is not enough money in the world. Okay? So if we're talking, like, a little spider did it say live? Did it say it had to be alive? [0:11:31]  Pastor Bill: No, not live. I don't think it said live. Did it say alive? [0:11:36]  Pastor Newms: I don't remember. [0:11:38]  Pastor Bill: Oh, yeah, it says live. [0:11:39]  Pastor Newms: Okay. [0:11:39]  Pastor Bill: A live spider. [0:11:40]  Pastor Newms: So if we're talking like a little spider, like this spider, like that spider, like a real little spider, like that kind of spider. You see what I mean? Look at the camera. Like that. We're talking about that. [0:11:50]  Pastor Bill: I see it. [0:11:54]  Pastor Newms: I'd do it for a couple of grand. [0:12:00]  Pastor Bill: Now, my only qualifier here is two things. One, is this a poisonous spider? I'm going to get sick and fade it. [0:12:11]  Pastor Newms: Well, poisonous or venomous? [0:12:14]  Pastor Bill: Well, venomous. It affects me when it bites me. Poisonous. I get sick when I bite it. [0:12:19]  Pastor Newms: But I don't want venomous either, because it could bite me in the process. [0:12:22]  Pastor Bill: Of me eating it. Well, that's why you start at the butt first and bite it in half so that it dies, so it can't bite you on the way down. [0:12:29]  Pastor Newms: You got to then hold the front. [0:12:30]  Pastor Bill: Of it right where its fangs are. Just chill. There's ways to hold spiders. Okay? One, is it poisonous? And two, is this something that people normally eat because it's got a good flavor, or is it going to be nasty as I all get out of my mouth? Those are my two qualifiers. Now, if it's not poisonous and people enjoy eating it, I'll just do it for a dare. No, if people don't I'm going to need at least, like, $10. [0:13:06]  Pastor Newms: No, homie. No. [0:13:10]  Pastor Bill: Listen, brother. [0:13:12]  Pastor Newms: No. [0:13:13]  Pastor Bill: I've eaten a peanut butter and maggot sandwich just for role play. [0:13:19]  Pastor Newms: I understand that. That's different maggots are nutritious. Like, that's different. Spiders are spiders are nutritious. You can't no. Have you seen the TikTok where the lady dips it and I got salsa and then eats it silky? [0:13:36]  Pastor Bill: That silky texture on the inside when all that webbing comes and the ichor. [0:13:42]  Pastor Newms: No, dude, get out of here. We're not friends no more. This is the last episode of The Berean Manifesto, faith, hope, and love for the Christian of last week. [0:13:52]  Pastor Bill: Because Pastor Bill, isn't it ick-or? [0:13:55]  Pastor Newms: No, it's I-core. [0:13:57]  Pastor Bill: It's ick-or. [0:13:58]  Pastor Newms: I-core. [0:13:58]  Pastor Bill: I thought that was pronounced ick-or. [0:14:00]  Pastor Newms: I don't care how it was pronounced. It's icky, so it has to be an I. [0:14:04]  Pastor Bill: Like ick-or. [0:14:05]  Pastor Newms: No, icky. [0:14:06]  Pastor Bill: So ick-or. [0:14:07]  Pastor Newms: No, it's icky. So I-core. I have to be right on this. It's just how it is. I actually don't know. How do you pronounce icore? Just like I always say. No, not what what word is that? That's not a that that's some kind of, like, eldritch horror word that I looked up. How do you spell icore? I don't know how to pronounce I don't know how to spell icore to then ask how to say icore. How do you pronounce spider blood? Is it not I-core? [0:14:59]  Pastor Bill: It's I-C-H-O-R. [0:15:01]  Pastor Newms: But that doesn't nothing goo. [0:15:06]  Pastor Bill: It is a noun that is pronounced okay. I-core. [0:15:08]  Pastor Newms: All right, here we go. Ready? Here we go. Here we go. [0:15:12]  Pastor Bill: I-core I-core. [0:15:14]  Pastor Newms: Bam. I-core. [0:15:17]  Pastor Bill: Yeah, I-core. That's what I just said. [0:15:20]  Pastor Newms: I was right, you were wrong. [0:15:21]  Pastor Bill: I think that's what that pronunciation? [0:15:23]  Pastor Newms: I was right, you were wrong. I-core. Okay, Biggs, here's the problem. Best spider is a dead spider barbecue. [0:15:30]  Pastor Bill: So you're saying you need a dead. [0:15:31]  Pastor Newms: Spider, but not a live spider? Biggs, I know you ain't actually going to know. There's no way. I've seen you squeal like a little girl and run across a room as a six foot three factory worker. Like you are not out here trying to post on the Internet that you're going to eat a spider. I call shenanigans. That's the word. I can say. [0:15:56]  Pastor Bill: So on the free Wiktionary for the word I-core. It's got pronunciations. I-core, I-kar and ick-or are the three different pronunciations. [0:16:14]  Pastor Newms: So read Psalms 22:16 and Isaiah 53:5. Thank you for chatting for the first time. We saw you join us last month, so welcome back. Posted a bunch of things called hyper creeps. And they're just spiders. They're just spider like little spiders. Just a whole line of little spiders. [0:16:33]  Pastor Bill: Just this hype creep on my end. [0:16:36]  Pastor Newms: They're little spiders. They're little spiders. [0:16:38]  Pastor Bill: Over and over again what these were to say. Psalms 22:16. [0:17:08]  Pastor Newms: It's an interesting aspect of life. Now, I'm just going to call you Read as opposed to saying your whole name each time. So neither one of us have a denomination per chance. And the Ecclesian House, which is the ministry that we are both from in this respect, is an interdenominational ministry. So we work with multiple people all the time. So neither one of us are in a denomination per se. The church I attend on Sundays is non denominational. And the church Pastor Bill attends is also non denomination, is technically interdenominational because he's the pastor of the church that you're currently at. [0:18:08]  Pastor Bill: This is the service of the church. [0:18:12]  Pastor Newms: So technically interdenominational. Now I lost my so Biggs would. [0:18:26]  Pastor Bill: Eat a dead barbecued spider. [0:18:30]  Pastor Newms: How much money, though? We talkin' Biggs because I'm willing to pay you some money to watch you have to eat a spider just because you said so. And we'll record it to put it on here just because you hate them so much. I want to know what amount of money to see if I can pull off getting it. And see, now he's going to give us some crazy amount of money that no one would ever do just so he doesn't have to. [0:18:51]  Pastor Bill: But we'll start a crowdfunding campaign of some kind. We'll figure it out or something. We'll start a kickstarter. We'll be like we'll give you pictures of Biggs trying to get the spider on a shirt, all kinds of stuff for the Kickstarter. We'll get the money. [0:19:17]  Pastor Newms: Oh, man. All right. Yeah, we're good. All right. [0:19:29]  Pastor Bill: You just wouldn't do it, Pastor Newms. You just wouldn't eat. [0:19:31]  Pastor Newms: No, I would. I said a couple of grand for a small one and a whole lot of money. It's going to depend on the size of the spider. Like, you're going to show me the spider and I'm going to be like, no. You talk about them Biggs old translators where it's going to take multiple bites and I can't just swallow it. You got me almost ready to cuss here. I know we keep it family friendly. There was this part but no. [0:20:02]  Pastor Bill: And they would have no weird things, right? [0:20:04]  Pastor Newms: No. [0:20:04]  Pastor Bill: And every time I always watch that, I would always be like, I don't see the issue. Just what's that word? Disassociate and eat it. Why can't you just disassociate? Just do it. [0:20:20]  Pastor Newms: Neurotypicals can't disassociate. [0:20:25]  Pastor Bill: It's not real. I would just disassociate. It's not real. It happened over there, and my brain is over here. I don't understand. [0:20:32]  Pastor Newms: No homie. No. I don't know if we can be friends. Like I said, this is the last episode of The Berean Manifesto. Thank you for joining. Hope you all have a good night. If anyone asks how the ministry died, it's because Pastor Bill said he would eat spiders. [0:20:51]  Pastor Bill: Pastor Newms couldn't handle that. [0:20:53]  Pastor Newms: Yeah, we have fought on air about all kinds of stuff and even more in our personal life. The breaking point was the argument of. [0:21:08]  Pastor Bill: Spider, the edibility of Arachnid. [0:21:16]  Pastor Newms: Oh, man. Okay. Yeah, we got to change the topic. I'm icky as I'll get out right now, we got to go, like, you got to change it to something. Let's talk about the actual stuff. Get to going. [0:21:28]  Pastor Bill: Get to go. Genesis. [0:21:29]  Pastor Newms: Okay, genesis two. Move on. Let's go. [0:21:32]  Pastor Bill: Since we started season four oh, Biggs. Come on. 2.5 million get real. Okay, so since we started season four, we picked back up in Genesis one, right? We started talking about Genesis One. We've talked a little bit about John 1, and we went all the way through the first chapter of Genesis. We talked about the history of the chapter 1 of Genesis and the origins and the Babylonian stuff and some of the Sumerian stuff. And we really did this overall look at why is this piece of text included in Genesis? What is its positioning in relation to everything else? And we went through kind of what are the poetic ramifications of the wording and the things they chose to say and what are the deeper meanings behind those words. When we talked about Genesis 1:1, and we were like, this isn't really just in the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. It's this deeper, really profound thing. And if you haven't listened to any of that yet, take some time, go back and read the transcripts or listen to it right quick and then come back and listen here. If you want, if you don't - if you just want to pick up from where you are, that's cool, too. We can just pick up right here. So now we are picking up in Genesis, chapter two, previous years, which I. [0:23:08]  Pastor Newms: Would like to also state, I hate the chapter breakdown so much sometimes. [0:23:20]  Pastor Bill: Because Genesis chapter two, verses one through it should be chapter one, technically be the end of chapter one. [0:23:28]  Pastor Newms: We should not be acting like bad television that requires you to watch the next episode in order to understand the full story. Like, we should not be doing part. [0:23:40]  Pastor Bill: Twos, mid chapter written like bad television. [0:23:45]  Pastor Newms: It's split up like bad television, not. [0:23:47]  Pastor Bill: Written up like bad television. [0:23:48]  Pastor Newms: We've got chapters like 119. [0:23:51]  Pastor Bill: It was the producers. The producers did bad with Psalms 119. [0:23:54]  Pastor Newms: It's just page after page after page after page to make sure it's semi together. And then we're like, let's cut this off and put three verses on the next one. No, there's no reason for it. It's painful. It's painful. And I understand the need because when we're talking in churches and we're talking in groups and we're doing things like this, you can't be like, oh, I'm on page 47. What page are you on? Well, my page I understand some of the purpose behind it. It's just like and we can't really go back at this point and change it all. I know, but it's like. [0:24:27]  Pastor Bill: Maybe always frustrated me. Some Bible company could make a Bible with new yeah,. [0:24:33]  Pastor Newms: But then it wouldn't be standard, and it would cause issues across everything and you would never be able to bible just got rid of them. [0:24:37]  Pastor Bill: It was like, no, we're not even going to have them. We're just going to get rid of them all together. [0:24:42]  Pastor Newms: It's not that's not that's a that's a translation. That's not a translation. That's a paraphrase. And they plainly say, so we're not gonna, you know, and, you know, it's just one of those things. It's one of those things that we all know it happens. It's just this is one of those blatant. Not like, maybe not. This is like 123-4567. Move on to the next story completely. And you're just like, okay, now I'll let you continue because I won't complain no more about it today. [0:25:20]  Pastor Bill: All right, so let's go ahead and read Genesis chapter 2, verses 1 through 3. So the heavens of the earth and everything in them were completed on the 7th day. God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the 7th day. From all his work that he had done. God blessed the 7th day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation. Sounds a lot like a lawyer writ that, didn't it? Wrote that, doesn't it? [0:25:51]  Pastor Newms: Sometimes. [0:25:53]  Pastor Bill: Now some text like the Greek Old Testament, the one that Paul had when he was writing the New Testament. Not all of the New Testament when he was writing his works that got put in. The new Testament actually reads, on the 6th day, God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the 7th day. But the majority of manuscripts say on the 7th day, God completed his work that he had done and he rested on the 7th day, which I find interesting. [0:26:28]  Pastor Newms: The Nasb says by the 7th day to kind of, I think, bridge that gap. Maybe, but I mean, it's one of those things. [0:26:42]  Pastor Bill: Let's see what the KJV pulls from. [0:26:48]  Pastor Newms: And on the 7th day yeah, but. [0:26:52]  Pastor Bill: The and on the are implied, not actually in the original. [0:26:58]  Pastor Newms: Right. [0:26:59]  Pastor Bill: And they are not given any numbers from yeah. Right. So we have two different Ideologies that we can pull from the two different ways that the manuscripts place these. Right. So the one says, on the 6th day, God finished his work and then he rested on the 7th day. And we have the other one that says on the 7th day, God completed his work by resting. Yeah, and that's the only difference. The difference there is that in one point of view, it views the rest as integral to the work. And on the other one, it says that the rest was taken because the work was done. Right. And so these aren't exclusive ideas. These are two ways to look at the exact same thing that's going on. They're not contradictory to each other. [0:28:02]  Pastor Newms: Yeah, they're definitely not contradictory. They are different, but they are not contradictory. [0:28:10]  Pastor Bill: So in the past, in January, we talk about taking a Sabbath day and then we talk about tithing. And that's usually the only times that we hit on those two things. And this year we took a little bit of a different track. Right. We started in Genesis one, we started working our way up. So here we are at the Sabbath conversation because now it's coming up, right? [0:28:37]  Pastor Newms: Yes. [0:28:38]  Pastor Bill: So on the 7th day, God rested. Now, whether he rested because that was resting is the completion of the work, or he rested because the work was done, either way, that doesn't really matter in the way that you frame the way you read that. So I had a friend several years ago, not that we're not friends anymore, but we're not in contact anymore. It was a Muslim gentleman who went by the name of D. And we would have these conversations where we would talk about the differences between what the Bible said about certain things and what the Quran said about certain things. And we got into this conversation about creation and the six days versus the Quran's idea that it was millions and billions and years and more of the evolutionary timeline is what he attributed the Quran's teachings to. And I went through the six days and on the 7th day, God rested and he scoffed. He scoffed and he said, God is God. God doesn't need to rest. And I said, I agree. It doesn't say that God needed to rest. It doesn't say that God was tired. It Says that God chose to rest. [0:30:04]  Pastor Newms: Right. [0:30:04]  Pastor Bill: He rested. The question came up of why would God do that why would God rest? So let's turn to Exodus 30:17. [0:30:22]  Pastor Newms: Okay, I was just about to do that. [0:30:29]  Pastor Bill: Okay. And I'm actually going to start reading at 16, but 17 is the meat of why we're turning over here. Starting at 16, the Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it throughout their generations as a permanent covenant. It is a sign forever between me and the Israelites, for in six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth, but on the 7th day, he rested and was refreshed. So God didn't need to rest, but he chose to rest and he was refreshed, right? That's what it says. Now, why would it choose those words, though? Because it all boils down to what is the Sabbath and why the Sabbath day is for us, right? It's a day of rest that we observe so that we can recharge, so that we can reset our mindset, so that we can refocus who we are and then move forward and do our best work. So it's not this legalistic thing, although some have taken it there, right? [0:31:53]  Pastor Newms: Yes. [0:31:54]  Pastor Bill: And it doesn't actually say if you go and you look at what the layout of what a Sabbath is, it doesn't actually say everyone has to Sabbath on the same day of the week. No, it says after you've worked for six days, take a day, refresh yourself, reset. And what we found in psychological circles in lots of different areas is that six days of work is a pretty hard limit for the human mind. When you get into the 7th day of work, the 8th day of work without a rest, you're starting to schism. You're not seeing things correctly, you're starting to see the world through weird blinders. Your body needs rest. And honestly, there's this push now for four days of work each week with three days off, because now we're talking not necessity, but now we're talking about what is the peak of human, what is peak performance? Right? What is peak performance? And peak performance turns out to be four days of work and then three days off, you are on Twitch, who calls himself Read. And then there's a couple of verses there. You can go read those verses if you want. Psalm 22:16 and Isaiah 53:5, the references to the Messiah, he says, yeah, a lot of things Jesus did is theatrics and instruction for teaching for us so our dumb finite human minds can understand. You're right on the money. There's so much in the Bible that is an infinite God, an infinite amount of knowledge, trying to dumb it down for humanity to understand. Even in this example that you've given, it's funny to go and read. Jesus will say something and then the disciples would be like, yeah, but what about and Jesus is like, yeah, that's what I just said, but I'll say it again if you think that would help. [0:34:35]  Pastor Newms: Yeah, when we look at the Sabbath. It's something that we I it's important from a standpoint of resting. And God thought it was so important that when the Israelites were going through the time periods that were getting the commandments and all those things, as we were reading in Exodus, he put on rules of hey, look, you guys have got to understand this. If you don't understand this and you don't take your rest, you should die. Now, here's the funny thing about that. This is not a hard rule to follow per se. Like go take a break for most people is not hard. There are those stubborn people out there that they work, they do everything they do and they don't take a Sabbath. They will burn out over time, especially if you're working two jobs, as Zaydie mentioned. What about people who work full time and are involved in ministry outside? At what point is that a form of working? In my opinion it is you still have to have a day off from those multiple aspects because you will burn out otherwise. And I think a lot of times that's where we see people who work both regular jobs and ministry part time. Ministry work is never part time, but I think that's why we see them burn out often is we have to focus on resting also and it's so important. And that's one of those examples. What Zaydie is saying is where it is hard to those are the types of people who it is hard to take a break when you're doing when you're doing that. But it depends on what is refreshing, what is pulling away from you, which ministry often takes a toll on you, at least in an emotional level. But that's why a lot of pastors take Mondays off. But there are people who don't. And that is where you can have serious forms of burnout. You have to be very careful with that. [0:37:41]  Pastor Bill: But some ministry can be refreshing to some people. Some people would consider doing some types of ministry to be invigorating, to be refreshing, to be restful, to be The door greeter people, the door greeter. [0:38:01]  Pastor Newms: Those weirdos at the door. People that are like super happy. [0:38:05]  Pastor Bill: And when you go to do ministry, it feels like work. Then you're not resting, you're not taking a Sabbath, you're working on the Sabbath. If you're working a full time job and then volunteering at your church too, to the point where you're not getting a day a week off, then you're not taking care of yourself, which is in my opinion, a cardinal sin. You have to take care of yourself. You're sinning against yourself in the name of whatever ministry that you're serving, which is dangerous. Jesus said love the Lord God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself, right? So you're supposed to love yourself, which means take care of yourself. Don't feed yourself poison, don't be drinking in excess and killing yourself off. Don't be smoking in excess and killing yourself off. Take care of yourself. Don't be shooting up all the time and hurting yourself and being promiscuous and getting STDs and all the things that aren't actual self love. Don't be doing all those things. Take care of yourself. Love yourself. Give yourself a Sabbath, actual love for yourself, and then love your neighbor in that same way. Make sure your neighbor is fed healthy. Make sure your neighbor is not becoming a slave to drugs. Make sure your neighbor's not being eaten up by addiction and doing things that are destructive to their life. These are the greatest commandments here. Love the Lord God with all your heart, soul, all your mind, your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. [0:40:01]  Pastor Newms: I like to love yourself, yeah. [0:40:05]  Pastor Bill: No, you like to ignore the love yourself part. Most people do. A lot of churches do because they think they look at self love and they go, oh, well, self love is self indulgence. You're not supposed to self indulge. Well, that's not love. If I love my kid, I'm not going to 24 hours a day, seven days a week be shoving candy down their throat. That's indulgence, but that's not love. If you love yourself, then you're taking care of yourself. Like I was talking about last week, I like to have a salad a day. Makes me feel healthy. I have more energy, my body works better. That's taking care of myself. That's loving myself. And so I take that seriously, and this is just as serious. Finding time to rest and reset and refocus yourself is a paramount thing. And it is important for all human beings to have rest and refreshment. It just is. Yeah, gosh, I don't know what else to say. [0:41:26]  Pastor Newms: And there's nothing so in what we've been doing as we've gone through this. There's nothing super different about the Hebrew words used here either. [0:41:46]  Pastor Bill: Yeah, I knew there wouldn't be. [0:41:48]  Pastor Newms: Yeah. I'm just saying that for everyone else, in case they're like, we talk about the words this time. [0:41:55]  Pastor Bill: Why did we talk about the words? [0:41:57]  Pastor Newms: And it's because they are there's not. [0:41:59]  Pastor Bill: Going to be in this one. [0:42:03]  Pastor Newms: It's what we've talked about throughout the last weeks of this is what it is. [0:42:12]  Pastor Bill: And there's the plural. There still it's God. Not God. We're actually still technically in the Babylonian adaption. We're still adapting the Babylonian text there. We haven't actually gotten to what was originally the beginning of Genesis yet, not until we get to verse four of chapter two, and then we get to the actual first Jewish text of the Bible. And we talked about the 7th day manuscripts versus the 6th day manuscripts as far as verse two there of chapter two is concerned. But yeah, you have to find time for yourself to rest. [0:43:05]  Pastor Newms: Yeah, it's super important. Resting is important. [0:43:10]  Pastor Bill: And you'd think we had a two day weekend in the United States because people understood that but no, that's not why we have a two day weekend in the United States we have a two day weekend in the United States because it's illegal to buy cars on Sundays. No, that's literally why letting people off on Saturdays came through. [0:43:37]  Pastor Newms: It was illegal. [0:43:40]  Pastor Bill: It still is in Texas. [0:43:42]  Pastor Newms: Right? In Texas, but not everywhere. [0:43:44]  Pastor Bill: Yeah, not everywhere. [0:43:46]  Pastor Newms: Did Pastor Bill forget to spring Pastor Bill? Your time is wrong. [0:43:52]  Pastor Bill: Where? [0:43:52]  Pastor Newms: On your clock. [0:43:55]  Pastor Bill: Well, okay. [0:43:58]  Pastor Newms: Biggs just called you out on it. [0:44:01]  Pastor Bill: It's a manual clock. I forget that I even own a manual clock anymore. [0:44:06]  Pastor Newms: I was like, what do you mean? Biggs like, he's here. What are you talking about? Yeah, and then I looked behind you and was like, his clock's wrong. [0:44:17]  Pastor Bill: Every other clock I own, every other clock I own except for in my car is automatic. Automatically changes. Yeah. [0:44:31]  Pastor Newms: I don't have anything else. [0:44:32]  Pastor Bill: Yeah, I was trying to think of if I had any other anecdotes, but I don't. Only a story about D, but that relationship got weird about the third time he tried to convert me to Islam. It got really uncomfortable. [0:44:54]  Pastor Newms: And also there was issues with the business, wasn't there? Like some weird stuff happened or something? Because I remember I went by one time and it was gone. [0:45:06]  Pastor Bill: I mean, he had a hard time getting customers to come in. Yeah, I don't know why. The food was amazing. [0:45:14]  Pastor Newms: Food was really good. [0:45:17]  Pastor Bill: Food was for a while there was an uptick in people that came in, but then it kind of died back down again. I don't know. [0:45:25]  Pastor Newms: So good. Those were great. [0:45:28]  Pastor Bill: He ended up selling it to a lady in Irving and then they moved back to Canada. Yeah. [0:45:42]  Pastor Newms: Well, the Berean Manifesto is recorded live in front of a studio audience. There's no studio audience. It's a Twitch audience. [0:45:49]  Pastor Bill: It's a virtual studio. And it comes out every Wednesday at 07:00 p.m.. Great. [0:45:58]  Pastor Newms: You said Canada. [0:46:04]  Pastor Bill: And to be fair, we do record it live on Sunday evening. Did I send you that TikTok where the person said, if somebody says to be fair and your friend doesn't respond correctly, then you're not friends anymore. [0:46:22]  Pastor Newms: No, now granted, that means you've watched a niche show from Canada, but niche not niche. Niche. What is niche? That is what is the Mitchar. [0:46:35]  Pastor Bill: Yeah. So we record this on Sunday nights at 06:30 P.m. Central Standard Time. And you can go to our website, Ekk.House, to find out which Twitch, which Facebook, and which YouTube channel you can go to to watch live and also participate in the chat. Like you've heard us responding to people in the chat as they've brought up points, and Zany brought up a good point. And our new friend with the read and the verses references brought up a good contribution to the conversation so you can actually be a part of the conversation. And then the podcast comes out on Wednesdays at 07:00 p.m. Pretty much anywhere you get podcasts. I haven't double checked that. We're on every podcast service in a while because there are a lot of podcast services, but we are syndicated on most podcast services, the Berean Manifesto. So if this has been enjoyable to you or you found this helpful, or you want to share the word of other people, you can go like and follow and share our stuff on social media. You can like and share this podcast wherever you've listened to it. That would really help us spread the word about what we're doing here and get more people to come to the live recordings, get more people to listen to the podcast episodes. [0:48:06]  Pastor Newms: So that way there's more feedback and build the community. [0:48:08]  Pastor Bill: More feedback, more community. [0:48:11]  Pastor Newms: And me and Zaydie were actually talking about this today that we used to before COVID and before life and before me moving to Tennessee and Pastor Bill being in Texas. We met over a meal and did this. Pastor Bill did a recording of the podcast. Everyone listened to the podcast, and then we met and talked, and then we put that out. Also, Zaydie was like, why can't we go back to eating during it? Because that was always good. I liked that. And I was like, because then the podcast would be me chewing, and no one wants to hear that. And she was like, oh, yeah, the podcast. So for Zaydie, this is the whole thing, really. And then for others, we have, as you all out there know and are joining us in podcast land. You all listen to us via that. [0:49:10]  Pastor Bill: And then feeding people was a lot of money. [0:49:14]  Pastor Newms: It was, but it was good. [0:49:15]  Pastor Bill: And that money has to come from somewhere. [0:49:18]  Pastor Newms: It does. [0:49:18]  Pastor Bill: So it's just kind of like and we don't ask for money. We just don't. We don't believe in it. If you want to give, you give. We're not going to try to extort you into getting you to give us money. We don't believe in that. And therefore, we have limited funds. And that's okay. It's not a big deal. All right, there you go. That's all we have for tonight. We're ending about five minutes early, but that's okay. That's not a big deal. [0:49:53]  Pastor Newms: No. [0:49:54]  Pastor Bill: So I love you guys. I hope you have a great week. [0:49:57]  Pastor Newms: Be safe out there, please. [0:49:59]  Pastor Bill: And until next time, too much craziness, please. You add it up, please. [0:50:04]  Pastor Newms: It's crazy out there right now. [0:50:07]  Pastor Bill: If you live in Tennessee, it is. If you live anywhere else, then it's just kind of the normal amount of crazy. [0:50:14]  Pastor Newms: I disagree with that. [0:50:16]  Pastor Bill: But Tennessee, man, I don't know what's going on with Tennessee. You've got legislators. [0:50:21]  Pastor Newms: I don't know what we're doing. [0:50:22]  Pastor Bill: Anti gay and then commenting on gay thirst traps on Instagram all at the same time. [0:50:29]  Pastor Newms: And we've got our national government trying to ban tiktoks while Biden is in tiktoks. [0:50:37]  Pastor Bill: That White House making. [0:50:41]  Pastor Newms: I honestly believe the other 49 states are just watching Tennessee going, all right, let's see how this pans out. [0:50:48]  Pastor Bill: Because, you know, Texas is going to. [0:50:50]  Pastor Newms: Be right behind as soon as with Abbott. But it's that aspect of, like, everybody's like, well, they're the idiots who did it first. Let's just see what they volunteered, got themselves into. All right? And that's enough of a 30 second buffer, so now we don't have to sing. [0:51:09]  Pastor Bill: Personally, I don't understand drag queen story time. Okay. I don't understand why they want to do it, the drag queens. I don't understand why they want to have that performance with children. I don't understand it's fine. But I'm not saying that it's weird. I'm just saying I don't understand the why of why they want to do that firing. They're not allowed to. [0:51:34]  Pastor Newms: It's doubt-fireing. [0:51:36]  Pastor Bill: He put it on everyone's mind. When you're a proclaimed Christian and you've come to a drag time story hour because you believe it's wrong and the Nazis roll up, literal Nazis with swastikas on their arms and they link arms with you and you're sharing the same message with Nazis, you're wrong. [0:52:11]  Pastor Newms: Pretty much anytime that you're joining with Nazis, it's typically you're wrong. That should be your wake up call. Really should really confuse on why it's not pulled up. [0:52:30]  Pastor Bill: The Christians should have dropped their signs and walked across the line in support of the people inside the library. Yeah, we should not be that's all kinds of wrong. [0:52:45]  Pastor Newms: Yeah. We should not be with Nazis ever. If anything, that should be your red flag. [0:53:01]  Pastor Bill: Like, Nazis are bad, period. Full stop. There's no qualifiers there. Nazis are bad, period. Yeah. Okay. And now I don't want this to get cut off. I would actually like you to leave all of that in there.

I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guests will bring Bold, Executable, Intrinsic and Targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get startedLesley Logan  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co host in life, Brad and I are going to dig into the advocational convo I had with Lindsay Moore. I think we made that word up.Brad Crowell  No, I looked that up. (Lesley: Okay, well ...) I mean, I replace that, it keeps trying to say a-vocational, but advocational is in the Wiktionary. (Lesley: Oh.) Yeah.Lesley Logan  Okay. All right. So, in our last episode, if you haven't yet listened to episode, go back and listen to it now or feel free to pause this one. Listen to it. Don't listen to it. Then listen to this one and go back and listen to it. You're gonna love Lindsay's voice. I'm gonna be really honest. (Brad: She's very sweet.) Go listen to it. If you want to listen to this one first and then the other one. I know people do that this because they tend to listen to things on like the end the week and then they go backwards in time. It's also fine. It's kind of like, knowing the answers before the questions. I don't know. It feels, it feels good. So you do you. It's really what we're saying.Brad Crowell  So it's starting at the end of the maze. (Lesley: That's me.) Yes, it is.Lesley Logan  Y'all okay, this is not in our notes, but I just have to say this because Brad was in there for this. But I'm in when I was on the Kate Wind podcast, Mom and Me Astrology. They said that like you know as with the way my chart reads, it's like really good with like before and afters. And I didn't say it but I want to say is I'm really focused on the after, and then figuring out how to get from there to the before which is now. So anyway, if you listen to that episode, you know, I like it before and after, but for different reasons.Brad Crowell  That is amazing. (Lesley: Okay.) All right. Well, before we get started, we got a couple quick things.Lesley Logan  Hello, from Monterey, California. We're at the Balanced Body POT. Y'all. We are at this POT right now. We're going to be in Korea at the South Korea POT and Seoul that is in I think May, and then we're going to be in Miami for that POT. So like, (Brad: Yeah, like this year.) get on the POT train. It's so much fun.Brad Crowell  It's a blast.Lesley Logan  Yeah. How do you get on that? That's a Balanced Body question. But, but but just know that we're there. So we hope to see you. (Brad: Yes.) And if you're in Monterey right now. Well, we're we're here. (Brad: Come and say, Hi.) We're one of the hotels on the main drag. So there you go.Brad Crowell  You'll see us bopping around the event. (Lesley: Yeah. Can't miss that.) We already have a table.Lesley Logan  Yeah. And in a week and a half, we're gonna do a pre sale for the chairs flashcards. Oh my God, I'm so proud of myself. ... I'm so proud of myself because I was I was really worried that this is gonna be another nine month project. But like I've been really meeting the deadlines and the our team is really got my back, we got a really good system going on. So I'm so excited to say that we are literally we going halfway from opening up the opportunity to buy up early so that we can hit print, and then you will get the best deal on the show, on the up, I don't know on the road, on the in the in the ...Brad Crowell  On the presale.Lesley Logan  Yeah, you'll get the best deal. It's the pre sale, it's the best deal. (Brad: Yeah.) It'll be regular price when they come out, just so you know. (Brad: That's right.) So if you're like, "Oh, wait till they ship." You'll just pay more. Thank you, but you can pay less and buy early.Brad Crowell  Yeah, so we've got a waitlist for you. Only those who are on the waitlist, they're gonna get the hookup. Okay. So you can find that waitlist at opc.me/flashcard waitlist. I'm just gonna say that again, opc.me/flashcard waitlist. And we will put that in the show notes. Because I know it's a mouthful.Lesley Logan  Yeah. And then the doors are already open for our October retreat. (Brad: What?!) Yep. And if you know, you know, so that's all we're gonna say about that. (Brad: YKYK) All right, do we have a question, Brad?Brad Crowell  We do. And actually, this question was sent to you over the gram.Lesley Logan  Yeah. Yeah, it's actually like, I think they were to be honest, I think they're referencing an old YouTube video. So bless them for going back in time. Because I don't, I actually don't do Pilates after I weight train anymore due to my schedule. So I had to like, "Oh, let me update you on my life."Brad Crowell  Well, why don't you read the question?Lesley Logan  Yeah, well probably should do that. My brain ... says, okay, this person said, You mentioned do you like to do Pilates after you weight train. I do Pilates before I weight train is one better than the other. And when I told them was, Wow, thank you so much for like looking at this old video back in that life that I had. That's what I had access to because I actually had Pilates and weight training in the same building. And so I could do it that way and here's why I liked it that way. After you first of all, like weight training requires a lot of a lot of like stamina and the muscles and strength and then you need to stretch and I actually hate stretching like I actually (Brad: Oh) so this is not a (Brad: really) scientific opinion. This is just my opinion. Yeah, so require stretching and I hate to stretch. (Brad: Oh, I love it.) I know you love it. You also hate weight training. So it's like a really ... SoBrad Crowell  I think that's what, but you're naturally flexible too, though.Lesley Logan  Yeah, but you still have to stretch.Brad Crowell  Yeah, I know. But (Lesley: Yeah.) that's not my point. My point was that I'm naturally flexible. And I love to stretch. (Lesley: I am naturally ...) I am not naturally strong.Lesley Logan  Yeah, I think I'm both. Anyways, soBrad Crowell  I'm just perfect, you know.Lesley Logan  I'm just perfect in all, in every way. Um, no. So um, so why I liked Pilates after I weight train is because it actually did the stretching for me, obviously, their strength components and Pilates a strength based workout. But it was really nice. And it really like to me prepped me for the next time I weighed trained in my, in my opinion, the the problem with doing plies, after you weight train is one you have to have the time and the accessibility and b) there's no breaks in Pilates like there are breaks and weight training. So for the person who does it before they weight train, the reason why that's an awesome option is because it warms you up for weight training, it gets all your bodies connected, it allows you to be moving from your center right away from your first rep. And you get breaks in your weight training. So if you're like, oh my God, that was a lot that was like, you know, every other set, like I just walk around and chat with people for a couple minutes and then go at it again. Like it's, it's, it's weird for me to do that. But you can so, is one better. I've never done a scientific test on this. I haven't seen anything from the Huberman podcast just gonna say he does a lot of deep scientific research. So I really just think what do you have accessibility too? And is it is either practice having a negative effect based on the order that you're doing it. If it is then switch the order or switch the day.Brad Crowell  Yeah, I think I mean, you know, like, the idea is, with Pilates, you're going to be moving, moving consistently, over 10 15 minutes, right. You're going to get the blood flowing through your body, and that is going to benefit you when you are weight training. (Lesley: Yeah.) So I love the idea of doing it before, because it gets the blood flowing. Doing it after Pilates, also, not only does it help you strengthen, but it also helps you stretch. So you could use it as a cooldown (Lesley: Yeah.) in addition. So (Lesley: Yeah.) actually, you could do it both.Lesley Logan  Yeah. (Brad: Yeah.) Yeah, that's what I so I just think like, it really has to depend on you and also your body and and then ladies, just gonna like remind you of Jenn, Jenn Pike's podcast, podcast episode and also Dr. Bender's first podcast episode. Based on our hormones, our workout schedule has to change a bit. So you're, you may have times of the week where you can do it today like I could where I could do weight training and Pilates. And then there's days where it's like, Are you kidding yourself? You should just be doing Pilates. And if you are ...Brad Crowell  Yeah or just do some jumping jacks. (Lesley: Yeah.) Good to go.Lesley Logan  Yeah. And if you are pre menopausal, that is going to be a whole different ball of wax that you get to experience on your own. Yes, love. I heard your request. I'm working on a menopausal guest. So stay tuned. But in addi... any, the too long didn't read is, do it makes you feel good. That's always gonna be better.Brad Crowell  All right. Okay. Now let's talk about Lindsay Moore.Lesley Logan  Aren't you so excited to talk about her.Brad Crowell  I am. She's amazing.Lesley Logan  We love her.Brad Crowell  Yeah, obviously. She was, actually she was the first teammate, (Lesley: We've ever hired.) that we've ever hired.Lesley Logan  Yeah. And if you didn't listen to her episode, then you don't know how much we loved her. You don't how we met and that's a reason why you should listen to it first. But anyways, Brad's gonna tell you about her.Brad Crowell  Yeah, she's just lovely. But on a mission to empower people towards getting the best health care they possibly can. Lindsay is a doula, a patient advocacy consultant, a coach and a speaker. She works with individuals, families and provides and provides, (Lesley: providers) oh, I read that wrong. She works with individuals, families and providers to foster great communication to transition well, through the different stages in life.Lesley Logan  Yeah. Which, I just want to like point out, we probably have it in our notes. But if you can notice, like she says providers versus doctors, and that we talked about that in the podcast and why like that's a really ...Brad Crowell  Yeah and we're not necessarily patients. We are clients.Lesley Logan  Yeah, I love being a client because that means I can take my business to other places.Brad Crowell  That's true. And also changes the way you think about it. SoLesley Logan  Yeah. Well, why don't I jump it. (Brad: Yeah.) So um, I love that she, we brought up this topic that she said, which is like, why don't we speak up for ourselves with medical professionals. So her points on this were that because they were this white coat and because they have his medical degree. And because we're all raised like if you're not a doctor, like you're not you don't know everything and we implicitly trust them. And ...Brad Crowell  And well, it's actually like a phrase. It's called white-coat silence.Lesley Logan  Yeah, white-coat silence.Brad Crowell  White-coat silence.Lesley Logan  Yeah, so it just means that we implicitly trust doctors that they said so and this there's this power dynamic that they know more than me (Brad: Right.) about health. And it's like, yes, they did go to school more than you did about the body. But you also know your body.Brad Crowell  Yeah, you know your body.Lesley Logan  Yeah. And then also, what other things that come into place just people pleasing in general, raise your hand unless you're driving.Brad Crowell  Well, hold on, let's talk about that I, you know, your body, I think that's good. That's, that's helpful. You don't necessarily know the science and the medicine, the medical behind your body. But when the idea here is, you know, your body. So if they're saying, well, then, you know, if they're making assumptions, for example of like, you know, this, that this and you'll be feeling this, that and the other and you're like, "Am I feeling this that and the other?" You can literally say, "I don't feel this that the other." So (Lesley: Yeah.) because you know, your body, right? (Lesley: Yeah.) So obviously, they know that the science behind it, but you can feel it.Lesley Logan  I had a doctor like remember when I was when my stomach issues. And we had talked to the guy that I ended up working with, and he had said, you know, I want you to get, I want you to make sure you don't have any parasites. Because if it's parasitic, like, it doesn't matter what I do, we have to get rid of that anyways. (Brad: Right.) So I went to the doctor, with my insurance. And you know, we we in LA, we actually had great access to great medical care, we lived in UCLA Medical District, so we had awesome access. And the doctor looked at me, like I was a crazy person. And I was like, trying to tell him how I knew I felt and he was like, you know, all your blood, your blood results look good. Everything's in range. And I was like, "I don't feel good." And so I would like, I would like us just explore, like, like, look another time at this. And it wasn't until I said, "You know, I've lost 25 pounds in the last two years with the stomach stuff." And that, that got them. So fight for it like, (Brad: Yeah.) give them more things that that will advocate and explain why you don't feel right, even though everything might say you should be.Brad Crowell  Yeah, I think I think that's really helpful. You know, because as you get frustrated, maybe you're actually revealing more information, like in your case, right there. You know, my, my mom had, I grew up with this idea that the doctor knows, but the doctor isn't necessarily right all the time. And I only knew this because my mom had her finger crushed in a garage door, like, flattened. And she was like, young, she was like in our early teens. She she went in and this doctor came in. And I don't even know what the full story was. But he said something. And my mom as a teenager was like, "What? That doesn't seem right." And I was young. And I was thinking like, "How did you have the wherewithal?" They'll be like, "No." And she told him, "You can't touch me. Leave me alone. You need to send somebody else in here." And she like, shut this guy down. And I don't think he needs to do. And she was just like, uh-uh I don't know what whatever it was that he said. She said, "Uh-uh. I don't agree with this." And that was the first time that I ever thought like, like, like, "Wow, I didn't, I didn't even realize you could do that. I thought the doctor just knew everything." SoLesley Logan  No, you can you can, I mean, you can, you know, this next part, which I want to get into really quick before you go into your stuff, is the people pleasing part because it had been so easy for her. Depending on how she was even raised to just go, okay, he knows, you know, but people pleasing is like, so what the preventive that is like, if you don't come in prepared with questions to ask to that, then it's gonna be really easy for you to like, talk to the doctor. And then because you don't want to be a bother, a pest, like a net, like an annoying and annoying client. You might just like agree with what the doctor says and ...Brad Crowell  Yeah and sure. I mean, you can, I mean, I think that most people will think while the doctors gotta be super busy. I don't want to bother them.Lesley Logan  Do you remember the Seinfeld episode where Elaine was like the writing? What do you writing into my note? What do you writing into my chart? And like she became like really obsessed with it. And they're like she was like trying to steal her chart. And they're like writing like, I don't even know I don't remember if they're actually writing anything about her. But I think like we we have this fear that they're gonna write something about us like, like, we were like an annoying patient and like don't like I worked at a doctor's office everyone and just so you know, never once ever in any of the charts I ever had to work in. Did anyone write, this person calls too much, don't answer that. Like ... now if you it has happened to you, fuck that doctor move on, but like and report them but but that's not what people are writing. They're often just really busy and signs because I asked her and I said what are some signs and symptoms that you're people pleasing because I think some people don't even realize that they're a people pleaser. And so she said because it also can be like very, you know, specific and she this is very much like are you driving home? Wish you'd had asked a question that you didn't. And I remember we talked about this earlier with the recent visit with the doctor I'll never go back to and I really was trying to very hard not to leave without having asked a question. And all I remember thinking is in the cars like all the things I wish I just said to her, like you're not listening to me, which would be the opposite would be a little agonistic. But like, still, please go into your offices, of your providers with questions you want answered, so that you don't have to remember in the moment, and if you are a recovering people pleaser, you can just like focus on your list. (Brad: Yep.) What did you love that she said?Brad Crowell  Well, first, I just wanted to say if you're hearing a bunch of crunching in the background, you're not crazy. Our dog has found a bone and he's just out of my reach.Lesley Logan  Y'all. He hid that in the bed. I swear. We had no toys in this room.Brad Crowell  No. He went outside. And he barked. And I open the door. And he came running back in with the toy. (Lesley: Yeah.) He went on to the backyard to get this bone. Yeah.Lesley Logan  Yeah. Yeah. This is, this is August, and he has a toy box. And he's always looking for a specific toy. It's not just any toy. There are specific toys. He wants a specific time. SoBrad Crowell  It's true. It is, it is amazing.Lesley Logan  That was your intermission.Brad Crowell  It was. Yes. Another thing that I'm laughing about. I just looked up on YouTube, Elaine and the Seinfeld thing? (Lesley: Yeah.) So we're gonna include a clip on YouTube videos. So you can enjoy that. So if you need a laugh right now, (Lesley: Oh, my God ...) feel free to check the show notes. ... So yeah, people pleasing. You know, it's, it's tough. It's definitely I think one one thing that would be helpful with with that is to write your questions down before you go in. Because, you know, it's really easy to freeze in the moment. I've done it, you know, like, "Oh, do you have any questions for me? Oh, no, I don't know. I don't remember. I don't even remember anything." Like, Lesley was like, "Hey, we need to take the dog to the vet, because he's got this bump." And I call the vet. And they're like, "Hey, what's wrong with them?" I'm like, "I can't remember. But I know I'm supposed to call you." So write your questions down. It'll help you in the moment. One thing that I loved, that Lindsay said, was, she talked about red flags, right, with health care providers, and you just kind of hinted at it when you were referencing your experience. And you can go back and listen to the actual interview to to hear the full extent of, you know, the frustration you had, but if you feel like the doctor is talking over you, or they're not listening to you, or you're saying something, and they keep changing the subject or they brush it aside, that's a that's a major red flag, right? If you leave the office with anxiety, that is a red flag. Okay. And, you know, I thought it was really interesting, because I think that ...Lesley Logan  Oh, I left that office visit full of anxiety. Like I have just like, I was like ... (Brad: Not just anxiety, but anger.) Anger and I was like, even, like, sad about it, because I just wanted to have a fucking doctor here.Brad Crowell  Yeah, yeah. Here here meaning in Vegas. (Lesley: Yeah.) Totally. Yeah. And I think I think thatLesley Logan  I need to go back to my California doctor. And like, literally go, I need a blood panel. (Brad: Right.) What can you do? (Brad: Yeah.) That is allowed in the world that I live in a different state than you and she's like, "Here's what we can do. And I'll do that for you." I was like, "Let's just do that. Because that makes that answers my questions that I had."Brad Crowell  Yeah. And it's frustrating, you know, but but I, I think that the other thing is, so first off, these things that we've been talking about are about, like, after the fact, after you've already met this doctor, right? And so that's important to know you can reevaluate just because you booked with a doctor and they gave you like a set of things to do doesn't mean you actually have to go like do them especially if you don't agree with that person. Right? Or they make you feel weird or you're stressed after you leave. You can absolutely find a different provider. And you can, you could say to them this I want to another provider maybe you don't like jade their opinion right away but at the end of the conversation after they've made their assessment you can say, this is what the other doctor said. But ...Lesley Logan  ... get second opinions and different prices on curtains and (Brad: Yeah.) blinds and carpet and handyman ...Brad Crowell  construction like building a patio. I mean painters.Lesley Logan  How many people that we have come to the house about the air conditioner, six?Brad Crowell  No. Three different companies. (Lesley: Three different companies.) Yeah. (Lesley: So you can shop ...) I had two electricians come by. Two electricians. (Lesley: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.) Because they because they were like, "Hey, we'll come to an evaluation. We want to see it." I was like, "Great." So I just started have an electricians stop by. (Lesley: Yeah.) Yeah.Lesley Logan  So you know, treat treat your body like you treat your house.Brad Crowell  Yeah. Or your car. But, or don't maybe because if you don't take care of your car, then don't do it like that. But here are some things you can look for in a health care provider before you meet them. So there are now like dating profiles, right. SoLesley Logan  Oh, my God. ... ad we just saw the other night. ... you like maybe it was just me. I think I was binging on my own show. Anyways, there are ads, and it is like swiping like a tinder thing. (Brad: Oh, that's hilarious.) Oh, she's available tomorrow. Brad Crowell  ... I was there for that one. (Lesley: I was like ...) Booked and actually, I think that we were just gonna mention your dad, your dad's experience with ZocDoc.Lesley Logan  Yeah, that was actually the ad we saw. And my dad 70, y'all. And he is like, oh, yeah, just he's on ZocDoc. He loves his eye doctor. He's mentioned to me 70's here we can tell. But he has mentioned seven times how much he loves her.Brad Crowell  Yeah. And then and then the other one is, when you do meet them? Again, this is kind of this is now you've met them? So, do you feel like you have, do you feel like you were able to build a relationship with the doctor? You know, did they treat you like, gotta check my my watch? Because I got to the patient in four minutes, three minutes, you know, were they, you know, like, were they basically buried in their notes the whole time? Or they actually engaging with you?Lesley Logan  You know, I kind of bring (Brad: You know) up like, because we I talked about this in the episode that I keep bringing in medical people because it really your health can actually be the biggest obstacle to you being it till you see it. If your hormones are off, your mental health is off, your body's off. But if you're like, "I don't know, guys, I this is fine." I just want to say this goes to your vets too. Like maybe you're like, "I love all my doctors." (Brad: Totally does.) We were trying to find a vet here. And we've shopped several times, we've done several things. And with Bayon, he has an interesting issue and the doctors here were unwilling (Brad: Yeah.) to figure out how to perform surgery on him. Because we said the last time he had surgery, he had a seizure. And our vet that he had was with was able to immediately stop the anesthesia. He stopped seizing and she just quickly did the removals while he was still like lightly sedated. But we ...Brad Crowell  ... prickly surgery. He's okay.Lesley Logan  He's fine. So but we had to do another surgery on him. And while the vets here are fine, and they're absolutely properly trained, whenever we mentioned this allergy or this this event, they literally shut down, can't do anything.Brad Crowell  Yeah, they just go, "Yeah, we were probably not the provider to help you with that." And it's like, "What? Okay. It's crazy."Lesley Logan  So this goes to like, it's like, learning how to advocate for yourself. Maybe if it's easier for learning while advocating for your pet, or your house or your car. Try that. But but but you there's just different signs and things that you can look out for. And our vet in California, which yes we drove four an hour's take him to the vet. Six actually because I had traffic. But she did research to make sure she can perform a surgery without him having this thing and like, there, Brad Crowell  There are people out there who can at the end of the night for before the vets before the surgery started. We were just there last week. So before the surgery started, she came out into the lobby, she met with us and she said, Hey, I was thinking about this last night. And I was like, What? You you spent the time to think about tomorrow's surgery before you came in and did I mean, you know, she's probably done this stuff 1000 times, you know, but she specifically read our dog's chart and remembered all the things and then thought about it again. And when she said that to me, I was like, you're amazing. Lesley Logan  And when she has her own building, we will give her a shout out she can't la people cannot take any more patients right now. So we will give you all of her information when she's rebuilding, and we will happily send all the dogs to her because she's amazing. Brad Crowell  Yeah. Well, anyway, so So we're talking about when you're meeting your provider? Do you feel like they treated you like a human? Did they take the time to get to know you? And then finally, when you leave the office? What were you confident in the next steps? Was it clear? Was it easy to understand? Right, these are things to look for in a health care provider. So first is check out their dating profile second is there you know, when you meet them, do you feel like they got to know you and and third? You know, did you leave the office understanding the straightforward next steps. So yeah. Alright, so finally, let's talk about those be it action items, what bold, executable intrinsic or targeted action items. Can we take away from your convo with Lindsay Moore? Well, so specifically, when it comes to being your own healthcare advocate, she said, You really need to adopt a client mindset, right? So not a patient mindset, but a client mindset. So you are the client. They are providing a service to you, and how can you collaborate with them to have the best possible experience? So I thought that was just so interesting, because we were talking about it already with all the other providers you would ever bring into your home. But let's just talk about an exterminator. Right? If an exterminator has come into your property and you've dogs in the backyard, clearly you're going to they're going to say hey, would you be so Okay as to take the dogs in the house and lock the door. Yeah, of course, no problem, I'm going to collaborate with my exterminator so that he can do the job or she can do the job properly. Like when we and that just seems normal, that doesn't even, there's nothing weird about that, that's an obvious thing to do. But somehow that gets lost when we are talking with a doctor, you know, in the same way, you are in a position, you are a client, you have 100%, you have options to go to another provider. Right? And you they need to you you can collaborate with them about your health. So I thought it was really interesting to adopt a client mindset. Lesley Logan  Yeah. And like, if you're like, I don't know about that, you know, like, maybe Brad's example is like I live in apartment, I don't know, think about the places you do shop and the ones you don't, and why you don't shop at those places. Because you have specific reasons, a specific reason that you don't eat at a certain place. That's been a client that's been a customer, it's been a consumer. So take that as like your roadmap. Brad Crowell  Yep, totally. What about you? Lesley Logan  Okay, so here are the list of questions you need to write down. And if you're driving, then you need to, you know, become amazing at memorizing Here we go. One of the best ways you can advocate yourself is to listen to the postgame. This is when you're driving home in your car. How are you feeling? Do you feel anxious? Do you feel angry? Do ask? Did you ask all the questions? So like even do you feel things in your body? Like do you feel better walking out than you? Did? Like walked in? Do you feel the same? I feel the same I'm gonna go that's positive. But if you feel worse, that's and it wasn't like Bad News Bears in there you probably. But with diagnosis, like there are something to like pay attention to. And and then to that, she said, ask yourself, What's going on your body? What needs to change moving forward? Are you comfortable seeing that doctor? Again? This is a big question. Are you comfortable seeing that doctor again? You don't have to have a reason. So this episode hasn't come out yet. But I want you and Dr. Bender, second episode on our show comes out. I want you to be really careful when you think about trying to reason with things. She has a whole segment on humans, we want to have a reason why something feels a certain way, which actually just causes more stress. So if you if I asked you, if anyone asked you are you comfortable seeing that person again? And you don't have an immediate? Yeah. And there's like a hesitancy in there. Then something in your subconscious is wondering what like wondering something and it is worth evaluating. And it might not even be the doctor. It could be the assistance. It could be the assistance that they have. It could be the front desk person it could be like column. So that's just to me like after. To me, that final question is one of the most important that you could ask yourself. And I really hope that this whole entire episode has you thinking about your health in a different way thinking about your providers that are on your team. This is your team, you guys, do you see like people who are out there like, what what you were like would aspire to these actors do not they want to be an actor, but like these people who are celebrities of some kind, when you see them and you see the life that they're living, they have a team, right? You have a team, maybe you don't have like executive assistant, maybe you don't have you know, a an accountant or, or like a social media person, but your doctors are on your team, your dogs that are on your team, your vets are on your team, if your team is not allowing you to show up and be the best version of yourself and be it till you see it, then you think of like a football team. If your quarterback is slacking, you're not gonna win this game. The other team has to suck worse than your quarterback for you to win. So, so it's so so important that you evaluate who's on your team, and make sure that they're all part of what your goals are. And for that, anything to add, Brad? Brad Crowell  No, I mean, you know, the I think that the biggest thing I just keep thinking about your recent visit. The drive home was when you were very frustrated. And that was an that was very easy. Like, Okay, moving on, you know, and for me, it's funny because we were supposed to see the same doctor, and she had some, you know, patient prior to us that like took way more time than she expected. And so we ended up seeing her partner, and it was you did you ended up seeing her partner. It was a guy and he was super cool, super chill. I was like wow, this guy's really, like I felt I left feeling like, we're on the right path. And then you ended up seeing her and you were like, I can't go back to see this personLesley Logan  And just for... just for because I don't want to hear it. I literally went seeking a woman. So it's not me not not liking a woman over a man, I specifically want a female doctor, I'm still going to look for one. Brad Crowell  I don't think anyone was assuming that's fine to clarify that. Lesley Logan  I just want to make sure because, you know, I just like I really am looking for that. And I'm going to keep looking. But in the meantime, I advocate for myself with my old provider, I'm getting, I'm getting the needs that I need it done. So I can move forward. But, you know, I just I really do hope that these experts in all these areas are helping you see that, like, it's not just about having goals and a vision board, y'all. Like your body is the thing that goes with you everywhere. Hope you're well I guess he's, what do you call this stuff? Virtual reality. (Brad: VR, okay, it's what the kids are doing.) What the kids are doing no but adults are doing it too. So that is the only time you're living in reality that is not with your body, but I really do. I'm like resistant to change on that. But I just really want you to think of your health as part of being it till you see it. And until next time, haha just kidding. I'm Lesley Logan. And I'm Brad Crowell. Thank you so much for joining us today. How are you going to use these tips in your life? Grindhouse on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grindhouse  According to historian David Church, this theater type was named after the "grind policy", a film-programming strategy dating back to the early 1920s which continuously showed films at cut-rate ticket prices that typically rose over the course of each day. Grindhouse on Wiktionary: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grindhouse  Perhaps from the grinding or cranking motion employed by early projectionists. Perhaps from bump and grind (dubious). Since the 2016 election that gave Donald Trump a platform, not to mention the presidency, the word has been everywhere. But what does it mean? Where does gaslight come from? We hear a lot about ghosting. You know, it's when someone ends a relationship suddenly without warning and just disappears, with no contact. Nothing. But what about gaslighting. According to Wiktionary, "The verb sense derives from the 1938 stage play called Gas Light, in which a husband attempts to convince his wife and others that she is insane by manipulating small elements of their environment." Recently, I watched the original movie from 1940, which was based on the stage play of the same name by Patrick Hamilton. The film, besides being super dramatic in the way movies were back then – you know, close ups of crazy eyes, that sort of thing, it was actually fascinating to see where the term that we use so freely today, actually came from. Transcript:Don't get me wrong. I love it! Don't get me wrong. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to get you or anything. In this episode, you will get familiar with the expression "don't get me wrong". And as usual here on the Vocab Man you'll listen to several examples of the expression that we are going to cover so that you can memorize it in a very easy way. 0:32 Example 1 Surely recycling can fix the plastic problem. Don't get me wrong. Recycling is vital for dealing with waste. I'm not saying you should just start checking everything in the bin for landfill, but unfortunately our recycling systems just can't cope with the amount of plastic we currently produce.Plastics can only be recycled a certain number of times, so we can't keep recycling the same thing forever and making new recycled goods out of the plastic we recycle also uses up a lot of energy and resources. Doesn't plastic packaging, prevent food waste. This might seem like a question with a simple answer, but the links between food waste and plastic packaging are complex.Don't forget to follow and to read the transcript. Of course.Don't get me wrong. It's a very practical and useful expression. I think it's only used in speech. So you probably won't find it in written form and you might use it to avoid a misunderstanding. What I want to say is. Maybe you believe that the things you are going to say is a bit delicate or could be easily misunderstood by someone else.So then you just begin with "don't get me wrong"But it also works the other way around because according to the Wiktionary "don't get me wrong" is used to clarify that something previously said did not have a meaning that could be misinterpreted.2:09 example 2Now don't get me wrong. I do think it's important to know what's going on in the world, but I just don't think following the day to day developments of the news cycle is the way to do that.So instead, I'm going to get one newspaper delivered to my house every week. And that is how I am going to stay informed. 2:29 Outro with Daniel GoodsonDon't get me wrong. What the man said just before. I mean, he made a good point, right? But on the other hand, one cool idea is to keep informed on a daily basis, maybe on the internet, but in English or in your target language, then it's a win-win situation. You keep informed. And at the same time you will learn a new language.Thank you for listening. Daniel Goodsonwww.myfluentpodcast.com

Wiktionary.org defines microfiction as “Fiction that has a significantly shorter than average length.” Synonyms include drabble, flash fiction, flashfic, short-short story, sudden fiction and even twitterature.By its definition, brevity is the key to good microfiction. There is no time for plot and character development; every word must count. The writer plunges the reader into the story and wrenches them back out, leaving it to the reader’s imagination to reflect upon what they have read, what lead to the situation, and how it might resolve itself.Microfiction will not be to every reader’s taste. Some may consider it a modern malaise, where our pace of life has become too fast to enjoy a leisurely read. Or Twitteresque, where US Presidential pronouncements are reduced to 280-character tweets. And yet, microfiction is not as recent a form as some might imagine. Ernest Hemingway is said to have written a famous piece in response to a challenge to write a six-word novel: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”I wrote these three microfiction pieces at different times in my life. There Is No Need Wake Up was written for a local radio competition in 2000. The brief was to include the tag line, “There is no need to wake up”. As luck would have it, I have occasionally dreamed my footy team has won games that, in reality, they lost. And I Didn't Even Get Convicted was also written for a local radio competition in 2014. The story had to be 200 words or less and to end with the line, “And I didn’t even get convicted”. I received a nice thank you for my entry. But I didn’t even get selected as a winner. The final short piece, We Need To Talk, was written for a competition run by Meanjin Quarterly to celebrate the introduction of 280-character Twitter in 2017. The rules were simple: tweet a 280-character story and include the hashtag #meanjin280. I didn't win the competition. But I repurposed the piece for another microfiction competition run by the Australian Writers' Centre in 2019, as We Need to Talk in 29 Words. And this was published on their blog.I hope you enjoyed this dabble with microfiction. Sexual Wholeness for a Culture That Splits Bodies from Souls

Christ City Church, Washington DC

Our bodies matter, and what we do with them matters. Pastor Justin Fung preaches on sex and sexuality in our fifth week of The Deeply Formed Life series. [1 Corinthians 6:13-20] Update — an apology from Pastor Justin: On Sunday, in talking about the theme of sexual wholeness, I shared some of my own history, including how I became addicted to pornography. In the course of telling the story of how I was first exposed to porn, I recounted when I had first been exposed to pictures of naked women — when some friends bought pornographic material from a store (at the time, porn was not as easily accessible online as it is now) — and described it as “a dirty magazine.” Later in the week, I received feedback from a couple folks that that phrase elicited feelings of confusion — and even hurt — about what I was saying: what was ‘dirty' about the magazine? Was it the sight of women's bodies? Was it the sight of naked women's bodies? That feedback caused me to stop and think, because “dirty magazine” is, I think, a pretty stock phrase for most men I know to refer to pornographic hardcopy material. And I certainly hadn't meant it to imply that women or women's bodies were unclean. In fact, I hadn't even given a second thought to that phrase. Which is the point. One of the practices we named to help us seek wholeness was to identify sexually de-forming messages and narratives. That includes unpacking the baggage we have picked up and the language we have learned, which may be as familiar to us as the air we breathe. But that doesn't make it right or good. Wiktionary tells me “dirty magazine” came to refer to material considered “morally unclean,” but I wonder if instead it might describe the act of the consumer, to paraphrase German theologian Martin Buber, treating another person as an “It” rather than a “Thou,” an object rather than a person. Nevertheless, I should have been more thoughtful and less casual in my use of a slang phrase so I apologize for that. Thanks to those who gently and lovingly provided that feedback.

Mathias: [2:54] Genau. Comments? 888-563-3228 Question of the Month As I record this it is April 1. The first quarter of 2018 is over. What had you planned on doing in that first quarter that didn't, and what are you going to do differently to make it happen in this quarter. You can leave your answer using the options on the contact page I need your answer by April 26th. Defining Ego: The Good Side of Ego The Freudian definition of “ego” is simply, according to Wiktionary, “the most central part of the mind, which mediates with one’s surroundings.” So many people think that if you have an Ego, you're a narcissist. If you have an ego than you are conceited. You think you are better than others.  Ego literally means a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-worth. Doing anything new, like starting a podcast, or going against the norm, is directly proportional to how confident you are of yourselves and your abilities. As long as you are in control of your ego, it will work for you. But as soon as your ego starts controlling you, it will hurt you. When ego controls you, it can make the truth look false and the false look true. How To Identify Negative Sides of Your Ego When you are overwhelmed by your ego, you will say words you will regret, take actions you will repent later on, and hurt the people you love most. Your inflated ego can also make people lose trust and respect for you There is a quote by Deepak Chopra to sum it up – “If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It’s very important to be aware of them every time they come up.” If you find yourself defending yourself, this may be due to a couple of reasons. You may actually be right (and you're trying to educate someone about your point of view) or your wrong and you are defending yourself as you are afraid of the ramifications if it is found out you are wrong. There is the old saying, you can be right or you can be married. I found this to be true. My ex-wife (note the ex) here are and I would battle for days because one wouldn't drop it, and the other wouldn't admit when they were wrong. The opposite of defensiveness is openness, and that means being open to new ideas. When you're not willing to even ponder another point of view, you may want to check yourself. If you do a solo show, you may want to take all of the adulations but that's just not true. Case in point, I record, edit, and post this show. I am the producer, host, editor, web designer, graphic designer. I do this show by myself. That appears true (it is), but I get feedback in the form of emails, speakpipe messages, Facebook likes, etc that help me steer this podcast in a direction that allows it to connect DEEPER with the people who find it. Thanks to my audience who when they hear someone talking podcasting say, "You need to listen to the School of Podcasting, " or "You need to join the School of Podcasting." I would be a fool to say the success of this show is 100% because of me. What Can Happen When You Put Your Ego Aside This episode was inspired by my going to a Michael Schenker concert. Who is Michael Shenker? Well, unless you are a guitar player of 30 you've probably never heard the name. To give you something to frame this in you probably have heard of Metallica (one of the most popular Heavy Metal bands of all time) their guitar player went 100% "Fanboy" upon meeting him and pulled strings (no pun intended) to play with him (see video).   Michael is touring under the name Michael Schenker Fest. Why? Because he is touring with four different singers. To all of you nonmusicians, there is a disease in music called LSD. It stands for Lead Singers Disease. As I look back at my 30 years of playing in (I started when I was 15) I can say the best singers also has the largest egos. Not sure if those are connected, but that's what I saw. The singers are Gary Barden (age 62), Graham Bonnet (age 70) Robin MCauley (age 65) Doogie White (age 50). Michael himself is 63 years old (so maybe some wisdom has come with the age).  Gary Barden was on the first three Michael Schenker albums and as you age (if you haven't taken care of yourself the best you can) you just can't reach some of those high notes. On one song (Attack of the Max Axe Man for those of you keep track at home) I didn't think Gary sounded great when he was young, and now has no hope of hitting these notes. I about fell over as they did this song as Robin came out to sing the high parts as Gary sang a lower harmony. When you can't get Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar in the same room, this is like seeing a unicorn on stage. Later all four singers would assume different roles as they all ended up singing backup singer to each other. I'm not sure how I can express how rare this is. It would be like Donald Trump giving Hilary Clinton a compliment.  So by leaving their egos at the door, I got to see a one of a kind show. It was amazing (seeing Graham Bonnet at age 70 gives me hope in my 50's). They didn't let their egos get the best of them, and in return are probably making more money than they would if they stayed separate. In an even more mind-boggling twist, they even recorded some songs together on his latest record. This is like seeing a mermaid ride a unicorn into the land of Oz.  The Dick, the Doll, and the Dork In morning radio, there's a philosophy called the Dick, the Doll in the Dork. It's a three-person morning show and everybody has their role. So the Dork is typically the main leader of the show. The dork is the affable one who is a little bit quirky and he's the guy everybody loves and he's the AW shucks guy. And then there's the Dick, he's just the jackass who says stuff he shouldn't be saying. He rubs people a little bit the wrong way. You want to like him, but he's just a little irritating. And the Dork usually says, "oh, don't say that," and kind of puts him in his place. Those two roles kind of bounce off each other. They're the opposites. And then the doll, she's usually the brains of the organization. The Doll is the smart one that comes in and kind of puts everybody in their place. And she's the voice of reason. So everybody kind of has their lane. So if we're talking about, oh, we got this letter today from a listener named Kim. And she found another woman's number into her man's cell phone and she wants to know what she should do about it. And the dick is going to go, "What's the big deal? You know, it's just another chick." The Dorks is going to go, "No, you know what you need to hold on a second. You don't know what it's all about." He's going to be kind of in the middle. The doll is going to say, "Kick that guy to the curb. There's plenty more fish out there, right?"  So that sort of triangle and everybody has their role. You have to know your role and you have to stay in your role because that's what people expect of you. If they change their roles it messes with their chemistry. If the Dork starts saying everything the Dick does, well then we have one too many people sharing that opinion and someone is not needed.  Doogie White Won't Stay In His Lane This was evident in my concert. When Doogie White came out to sing he was annoying. The event is called MICHAEL SHENKER FEST, and it's MICHAEL'S picture on the backdrop. Yes everytime Michel went to play a guitar solo Doogie decided it was time for him to get the audience to clap along, or try to get them to sing "HEY, HEY, HEY" together. Meanwhile, ALL EYES are on Michael, and his vocals were walking over the guitar solo that everyone came to hear. Doogie kept getting out of his lane and messing up the chemistry and the experience. Back in August, I had the chance of talking to Dimitar Dimitrov, EU Policy Director at Wikimedia. On their website, Wikimedia is described as a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world. By now, it is one of the top 10 websites traffic-wise globally and it is arguably the biggest community-driven project online. It all started with the amazing Wikipedia, but as knowledge kept getting compiled, their projects also kept on multiplying. Today, the Wikimedia Foundation hosts a dozen projects with the joint goal of sharing knowledge – Wiktionary, Wikimedia Commons and their latest baby Wikidata are just a few of them. Being a content superpower is not easy, though. Surely a hot topic at the minute, the upcoming EU copyright reform is something under their radar but this legislation is far from being the only thing with a deep impact on Wikimedia’s work. The topic of discussion on Monday, May 8th, is Nicky's continued discussion of You Reap What You Sow. According to Wiktionary, "To reap what one sows", is an idiomatic expression (using, containing, or denoting expressions that are natural to a native speaker) that means "to receive as a reward or harvest in the same measure as one's exertions, in a good or a bad sense". Following Biblical principles isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but it is the best and wisest way to live. Learn how to live out the Word of God and be doers of the Word, not just hearers. When you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. This phrase falls in line with a multitude of sayings people have created to portray a great salesperson. I understand this is considered a form of flattery and is meant to say that a person has mastered the art of persuasion, but have you ever considered that this may be a negative statement about a salesperson? Wiktionary describes “Sell ice to Eskimos” as (idiomatic), To persuade people to go against their best interests or to accept something unnecessary or preposterous. Example: “He's such a smooth talker, he could sell ice to Eskimos.” If you have super powers of persuasion and can take someone's money leaving them with buyer's remorse, is this a win-win? What are your chances of a continued relationship with this customer? A relationship sales process executed correctly can uncover wants and needs that the prospect did not know they had. This process includes building trust and rapport, listening intently and asking good questions. Selling should be a virtue and this comes with a proper motive. Ask yourself if your product or service is providing value for your customer. If you see your customer in a restaurant this weekend will you run the other way or will you greet them with a smile knowing you did the best you could to serve them well? I hope the latter. One more thing, let's stop picking on the Eskimos. Have a great week! Pierce
